Over-view of the Site and surrounding pictures

This is an overview of what is around the site plan in Salford quays. It is an insight to show what the area looks like and if the atmosphere look safe to stay at.

Types of site analysis Formal site analysis

In formal analysis of the site, we will include the followings: • The physical elements of the site • The use of the site • What impact the environment has on the site • History of the site

Emotional site analysis

In emotional analysis of the site, we will include the followings: • The feeling of the area • Quality of the area • How we see the site through different materials and how it expresses its own emotions

Formal site analysis- site and annotated map This is a zoomed out map of the majority of Salford quays and what is close around our site. There is quite a lot of space and room to fit a building with the site. It will separate the building from others and it will look unique and outstanding.

N

This is my site plan. It is located in 93, The quays, Salford, M50 3TT. This is where I will be planning to design and build the property within 140m2 in this site plan.

The site that I will be using has an area of 484.1m2. When I went in person, it looked like a rectangular fixed box, however google maps shows an irregular space of a trapezium. I initially measured the width to be 18m and the length 23m.

N

N

This map represents that flow and area where pedestrians are walking/running. The pedestrians was mostly near the site, as this is where the open sea and pathway for pedestrians to be walking. Moreover, the purple colour represents the noise around the site. Majority of the noise was near the sea and where pedestrians walk. The noise was from the birds and seagulls near the sea and pedestrians talking to each other. Also, the noise near the top where cars are flowing on roads. However, it was more quite then thought, but this could be due to being in lockdown, hence there are less people around the site.

The map represents the direction the sun flows also the flow of the wind. In this scenario, the sun rises from the east. At 2pm the sun has moved and was shining from the south-east, which was hitting directly at the site. The wind was travelling at a speed of 13kmph, flowing towards the east.

Pedestrian and noises Sun flow The blue lines on the road path represents the flow of vehicles on the road. The main vehicles on the roads was the cars, buses and motorbikes. However, it was not busy during the time I went to visit,. This could be because of lockdown as everyone is inside, also it was a weekday, so it wasn’t busy during 2pm in the afternoon.

N

Flow of vehicles Noise flow Wind flow Flow of direction

The green lines on the map represents the pathway for bicycles. There were quite a few people on bikes doing exercise and enjoying the view.

Tram stations and map

This represents the map and flow of trams at Salford Quays. It shows where the nearest tram stop is, also where the trams goes and stops around Salford and Manchester.

Bus stops

This is a map that represents the locations of bus stops. There are two close bus stops near the site, so travelling will not be an issue, also the buses goes around the whole of Salford and it also takes you to the central of Manchester and Arndale.

Human and cultural

Majority of the ethnic group that lives around Salford Quays is mainly white with a number of 98. That is more then half the ethnicity that lives around Salford Quays. However, Salford Quays is also a diverse city, however it takes up of ¼.

Looking at this table, it shows that there is a higher chance of being employed at Salford then being unemployed. So it is quite reliable and jobs are more stable around Salford.

History of the site This map represents Salford Quays in 1970’s. In 1970 it was known as ‘Manchester Docks’. This was when there were warehouses and sheds around the city of Quays. It was place for both coastal and ocean bound vessels carrying cargo and a limited amount of passengers from and to Canada. Moreover, it was a place of labour where people was working at 9 different docks. It has been over a decade, and Manchester Docks, known as The Salford Quays has significantly improved. The technology, the surrounding of nature, and the buildings has developed massively. We have better facility, and the area is more clean and less polluted compared to the 1970’s.

Formal analysis sketches

Emotional site analysis visuals and sounds

This is a picture showing a puddle under the tree. There where quite a few puddles around the site and that was because it was continuously raining through out the whole day and this made small puddles around some parts of the site. The floor was wet and slippery. However, the rain significantly helped to wash away the dirt and snow which made the ground clean and shiny.

When I went to the site, there were few people walking and talking around the site. Overall, it was a quiet peaceful atmosphere. This is a picture representing people together, sitting on the benches talking and some people walking and enjoying the view. Moreover, people were wearing puffy winter coats and this was because the temperature was freezing cold, and the atmosphere was wet and rainy. There was not many people around the site, but this could be the cause of lockdown and the pandemic, hence there are less people outside. However, when the pandemic is over, it is more likely to increase and more people will be outside, especially during the summer time and this will cause more noise around the site.

Near the site is a massive, beautiful lake. On the lake there are herds of birds and seagulls. Majority of the noises was coming from the seagulls. There were making loud ‘mew’ sounds, however it felt peaceful and it made the view a lot more interesting. Moreover, it was nice to appreciate the surrounding of nature near the site.

Sound of the site

The first sound were loud noises from the seagulls and the wind blowing making movement and sound from the water in the lake. Also there are people, quietly talking with others. It brings a peaceful atmosphere and you appreciate the sound of nature. Also, this was recorded during the evening times.

The second sound were mainly from the construction work and the wind howling vigorously. This was recorded during the day time, where there was loud construction going on, but it was quite far away from the site.

Sketches representing emotional analysis

The first one is a drawing of the site, however, the watercolours brings the quality and the feeling of the site. For example, the grey colour shows that it is windy and it brings a cold feeling and atmosphere.

This is a drawing of a bird standing on top of a wood in the middle of a lake. This drawing helps to understand the type of animals and noises you will be hearing most of the time.

This is a sketch of an ‘empty’ pathway near the lake. During the time I went to the site, it was quite peaceful, and not many people were there. It felt quite lonely, and open, however this was during lockdown. So it is more likely to get more noisy when lockdown is lifted.

This is not a drawing, however it is like a site combined analysis. I used all the elements of nature from the site. These elements gives you the sense of smell and taste of what the area is like. Majority of the view and site was wet moist grass, rocks and stones, damaged dead leaves, broken sticks, and water.

Site 1

• • • • • • • • • • • •

Site 1 is located in 93, The Quays, M50 3TT Site 1 is placed near a leisure centre with a car park, also there is a tall working building near it. Furthermore, opposite the site are some houses that people live in and they are reasonably quite There are two close bus stop near, also there is a tramline however it takes a good 5 minute walk from the site The measurement for site 1 is around 18m by 23m. The area is around 414m2. The sun rises from the east, and shines on the top part of the site. There is not many obstruction around the site, other than a few leafless tress and bushes around the site There is a car park near the site, but this is used for those going to the water pool leisure centre The temperature of this location was -1.3oc and the humidity was 67% Behind the site is a beautiful view of a big lake. Majority of the sound was coming from the seagulls, people, bikes and cars The site is pretty close to the street and roads

Site 2

• • • • • • • • • •

• •

Site 2 is located in 133, Merchant Quay, M50 3XG Site 2 sits right next to a large residential house which would cause some level of noise. There is a close tramline situated in Salford Quays which can be heard from the site. There are two office buildings which are both 3 storeys high which are located left of the site and behind where the car parks are located. The measurement of site 2 is around 10m by 25m. Which has a total area of 250m2. The sun rises from the east and shines directly at the front part of the site Majority of the sound comes from the seagull/birds and the gushing of the water The temperature was -1.3oc, and the humidity was 68%. The wind direction was travelling towards the east south direction and it was travelling at a speed of 9mph The location of the site was quite calm, but this could be due to a pandemic at the time, however after this lockdown and pandemic, the area is more likely to get louder, with more people outside. There is a lot more obstruction around the site; bushes, trees, shrubs are mainly the obstruction and covers a lot of the site. The site is situated near a big lake, and the view is amazing and peaceful.

Site 1 I chose site 1 at the end. The reason I chose site 1 was because the site has more space and there is less bushes, trees and shrubs around the site. This is useful as it will help me make my building and have various ideas and designs within the site. Moreover, in site 2 there were many business buildings around. Even though, there was not much noise coming from these building due to lockdown and the pandemic, it is more likely to get a lot louder after the lockdown compared to site 1. More people will be out and cars will be making a lot of noise, which will then disturb you. Also, site 1 has more neighbours around and more closer to you then site 2. It is quite important to have a few neighbours pretty close to you, as they can help you if anything went wrong or if you had an accident. Furthermore, than landscape in site 1 is more smooth and it does not change terrain as much as site 2. This is more useful, as it will be easier to walk and enjoy the area more then site 2. Lastly, both sites have public transports, however, site 1 has transports more closer to the site, and it is a lot more easier to get to then site 2.

Own House Design and model

Brief summary of my house Myself I am a university student currently studying architecture. Studying architecture has made me realise that having a great amount of space is vital, as there is tons of work and it consists of a lot of physical work. Moreover, having a good amount of space for my study is not the only case that I need it for; there are hobbies such as boxing, gym work outs, cooking, cars and mechanics and spending time with my family and friends is also important.

The house is made up of many materials, but the main material would be the smooth, pale stone bricks, the soundproof windows and the dark/light grey laminates in the interior of the house. The house has a total area of 140m squared, and the garden has a total area of 36m squared. Also, near the building, there is a car park with the water pool centre, also there is a small car park at the front of the building.

House The house is a private house that is being rented. It consists if four different floors; basement, first floor, second floor and, roof. It is a detached house which sits on top of the smooth concrete floor, and has a long 7m back garden. The house contains 4 identical rooms on the second floor, each with the same size and area, so everyone is equal. Moreover, each room is big enough to fit more then you need. Also, the second floor consists of one bathroom, with a toilet and sink. The first floor contains 5 rooms; Living room, kitchen with dining area and, a garage. The basement has 4 rooms as well; gym room, swimming pool, study/gaming room, and a bathroom. The basement also has ventilation in each room, to keep the air clean and give fresh oxygen. The most interesting with this house is the smooth, pale stone, bricks covered around the house, with solid, sound proof windows (Doubleglazed windows). Also, the smooth waterproof roof that keeps the building secured. The height of the house from the ground level is around 7metres tall, and with the underground basement it comes to a total of 11 meters high.
