Sudhaar Society is a non-profit organization, registered under Societies Act 1860, serving at national level since 1994 in the multiple areas of development. Since its establishment, Sudhaar has worked with more than 1200 government schools, over 3500 teachers, and more than 141000 government school children. During this period, Sudhaar established more than 780 non-formal education and literacy centres enrolling over 23800 children, engaged in child labour, out of which 64% graduated and 38% mainstreamed to formal government and private schools. Besides in 2002, Sudhaar provided technical support to the Kasur District Government in developing the Kasur District Education Plan, the first of its kind in Pakistan. Since then, Sudhaar has developed 27 District Education Plans in the four provinces of Pakistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK).

Overall, Sudhaar has implemented 41 projects (33 completed & eight are current) in its life of 18 years with the total budget of PKR 738,008,670. The picture presented above is highlighting the sectors and numbers in which the projects have been implemented. Besides, its also highlighting that most of the projects were implemented in the sector of education, both formal and non-formal. To date, there are 15 sectors of development in which the Sudhaar remain engaged which is an indicator of diversified approach of contributing in societal development.
Projects / Years (1994—2013) In the journey of 18 years, Sudhaar implemented multiple projects with the expansion in areas of development. It took start from one project in 1995, but with the spirit of commitment and meeting its agenda of d evelopmen t, th e number of projects increased each year. Thus, during the last year, Sudhaar was implementing 12 projects at multiple localities of the country. And now in 2013 (to date), Sudhaar engaged in nine projects out of which one is closed on 15 March. So at this time, eight projects are functional under the umbrella of Sudhaar. The following picture is also highlighting the status of projects’ division as completed and current projects. The affective implementation strategy of Sudhaar contributes to convert the projects into long-term programs, e.g. Govt. School Program in Sialkot which was started in 1998 and still is continue with the age of almost 15 years. It was started with the financial assistance of FIFA-SICA / SC-UK, CIDA, and Adidas-Germany. Sudhaar has multiple examples of long-term projects as the above stated. Sudhaar believes in result-oriented programs, not projects, as social change is not a snap-shot activity, but a long process of changing behaviors of rigid and deprived communities.

Diverse Range of Beneficiaries Sudhaar has diverse range of beneficiaries showing its capacity of addressing multiple social issues at grass-root level. The figure below is highlighting that children, either engaged in labor or in schools, are the major group of beneficiaries and to date, there are 12 types of beneficiaries by Sudhaar.
Locations / Number of Projects Sudhaar started its working from Kasur by initiating the program of Non-Formal Education for the working children, with the financial support of Save the Children-Sweden/ILO/BMMS. But with every passing years and increasing number of projects, the geographical location of Sudhaar expanded and reached to 14 locations in Punjab as well as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK). Kasur (the laboratory of Sudhaar) is the district in which 20 projects have been implemented to date, then Sialkot, Narowal and so on. In the coming years, Sudhaar has the plan to move forward to expand its geographical context for broader range of beneficiaries in remote localities around the country.

On NGO-Donor Partnerships in Pakistan Donors now prefer projects, not programs. Sustainability/Exit strategies are simply crammed into one paragraph in a 30 page proposal and agreement. Donors are not serious about it. They DON’T want sustainability, they WANT dependency. If sustainability were encouraged, NGOs and communities would be emancipated in the long term and donors and INGOs (and World Bank, ADB, IMF on a much broader scale – thanks to Brettonwood and its aftermath) would be redundant by now. Sustainability could easily be achieved if 10% of the project funds are allocated to sustainability and spent based on practical strategies. Fawad Usman (Founder - Sudhaar Society)
