Slaughter House Constructed:

Slaughter House in Zafarwal (NA-115) was the primary need in order to keep the city clean and to make it safe from offensive smell as butchers were slaughtering animals at their homes or on road sides. The CRG (Constituency Relationship Group) of NA-115 raised this issue before the community, and then submitted to the concerned officials of District Government. Multiple advocacy sessions were conducted by the CRG individually with Assistant Commissioner, District Officer Live Stock, TMO and DCO. As a result of advocacy, the DCO conducted a site visit and analyzed the feasibility. Later, the tender was awarded and Slaughter House was being constructed. CRG performed a leading role throughout of this achievement.

Sudhaar is preparing communities about emergency preparedness in high risk areas of DG Khan (South Punjab). The key places in order to carry out changes in perceptions and capacities are schools in rural areas of the district. Teachers, shop keepers, Imam Masjids, local influential, and children in schools are key stakeholders at village level. Whereas, officials from education department and district government are stakeholders at district level. At village level, 30 ADMCs (Adult Disaster Management Committees) and 30 CDMCs (Child Disaster Management Committees) have been formed in order to make a quick response in emergency and to transfer their knowledge to their concerned communities. They are of the view that they are well aware about how to make preparedness in case of flood or any other natural disaster. The implementing partner of this project is UNICEF.

1 % Property Tax Abolished:

‫دصیفرپارپیٹسکیٹمتخوہایگ‬1

For the last 10 years, the people in District Narowal have been paying 1% tax on every transfer of property and this tax amount goes into the account of Narowal Public School. People were confused about this form of tax due to suspected utilization of that amount. A number of steps were taken by the renowned personalities in Narowal but all in vain. The CRG (Constituency Relationship Group) of NA-117 raised this issue from Sudhaar’s platform and launched an RTI (Right To Information) to access 1% tax’s budget utilization as a result of which, the DCO took sever actions against the CRG. But CRG remained consistent to its commitment to resolve the issue. The struggles of CRG were successful when the DCO notified to withdraw this tax on 28 th February, 2013. Now, the CRG has launched another RTI for the audit of that amount collected during last decade. Page 4

‫‪Sustained CRGs:‬‬

‫‪Sustainability is one of the key components of every successful project and this also has remained main con‬‬‫‪cern of Sudhaar. The Sustainability of CRGs (Constituency Relationship Group) under STAEP (Supporting‬‬ ‫‪Transparency Accountability and Electoral Process) project was a core component of success. Mr. Rana Ak‬‬‫‪bar is one of the key activists of CRG NA-110 in Sialkot. He joined CRG before 3 years and proved himself as‬‬ ‫‪an active and social activist. He is not worried about STAEP’s closure of the project. He says that he has‬‬ ‫”‪learnt a lot about resolving his community issues actively. He has registered his CRG as “Khalq Foundation‬‬ ‫‪at district level in Sialkot. Being president of Khalq Foundation, he is committed to serve his community as a‬‬ ‫‪service for humanity. Sudhaar assured him all kind of technical support in coming years.‬‬

Monitoring of Schools Enhanced:

In Punjab, a school has three monitors, i.e. AEOs, MEAs, and DTEs, which are stakeholders in school monitoring and evaluation for enhancing school performance. MEAs and DTEs have their prescribed formats being used during their visits to schools, but AEOs have not such a format and they have to note their observations / recommendations manually. By realizing this fact, Sudhaar organized training of monitoring staff of education department in Narowal. In 2nd training which was refresher, all the participants gave their inputs upon the draft of M&E Performa for AEOs. Their inputs were acknowledged for drafting final shape of the Performa which was later approved by the EDO-Education. Later on, it was implemented at district level owning by the education department in Narowal. It was a notable achievement under Citizens’ Voice Project in Narowal.

Brick Kiln Workers’ Daily Wages Raised:‫ہٹھبمزدوروںیکروزاہن ُاجزتںیماِاضہف‬ Daily wages of brick kiln workers (Bhatta Mazdoor) is a burning issue over years. The CRG (Constituency Relationship Group) of NA-117 in Narowal raised this issue for necessary steps to be taken by the district government. A series of advocacy meetings held with the district government officials (i.e. DCO and District Officer Labor) and mobilization sessions with the owners of brick kiln industry (Bhatta). Efforts were made for their brainstorming about the implementation of Daily Wages Law at district level. An advocacy seminar was also organized at district level with the participation of local MPA and DO-Labor. After the interest shown by the DO -Labor, the issue was presented to the DCO for final actions which were being delayed. At last, the CRG took final step and wrote a letter to the Secretary Labor of Punjab about the issue which was responded as expected. The Secretary wrote to the Director General – Labor Welfare of Punjab for immediate actions in the best interest of brick kiln laborers. In this whole process of efforts, the prime interest and involvement was of Brick Kiln Laborers.

Fazlpura School Upgraded:

Government Primary School, Fazal Pura (Sialkot district) comprised 157 students and 05 teachers but deprived of boundary wall and furniture. In rainy days, the ground of school looked like a pond. Sudhaar team made a need analysis and drafted a School Development Plan in coordination with school staff with the involvement of school council. After mutual consultations and commitments, the total expenses required for boundary wall and furniture were divided into three parts and Sudhaar contributed one part of total expenses, i.e. 72,000 in two installments. This proved to be a catalyst for the motivation of local community and later, they shared their part actively which helped to construct the boundary wall and purchased the furniture for school. This initiative contributed greatly to the beautification of school and made the learning environment comfortable and pleasant.

GBV Survivors are Sensitized:

Sudhaar is building the capacity of women survivors from gender based violence (GBV) in Sargodha. Under this capacity building program, basic trainings about life skills, business and trade skills have been organized for GBV survivors. After training sessions, their remarks were; 

“I must not delay my work because it creates stress to me which is not good”, Zahida Parveen.

“I learnt that minimum age for marriage is 18 years and if parents don’t follow this, they are liable to punishment”, Shazia.

“I am happy, these trainings enhanced my confidence and now I will move towards a prosperous life with positive thinking and hardworking”, Nadia

Sudhaar Society

Qaiser Came Back to School: Qaiser was a step child drop-out from Bab-ul-Ilam High School in a village of Sialkot. He left school with a belief that he was useless as all his relatives and friends treated him discriminatory. He began to work with his father in a surgical workshop. Motivational meetings were organized with his parents in order to get back Qaiser into school. During these meetings, his parents discussed his behavioral issue, because of which Qaiser stopped his studies. Then, Qaiser was motivated continuously and was attracted to school to be educated. As a result of a series of follow-up motivational sessions, Qaiser is now a regular student of 5th class, although he is an average student. Nowadays his teachers are trying their level best to make him a bright student for bright future.
