On a year to year basis, mortgage applications remain much stronger than they were at the same time in 2019 with 15% more applications filed last week.

Rates at all-time low levels: The typical rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage fell to a new all-time low level last week. At 3.03 rates dipped another 4 basis points from the previous all-time low of 3.07%. Pending home sales mounted a record comeback in May, up 44.3%, seeing encouraging contract activity after two previous months of declines brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, according to the National Association of Realtors®. In San Diego, luxury homes sales over $5 million are up 18% from the same period last year, and sales over $10 million are up 125%.

A TIME TO LISTEN, LEARN AND GROW Hello again! For each issue, I rack my brain to determine what the best message would be relative to our world of real estate and our lives in general at the moment. This time it wasn’t hard- given the enormous events occurring today in the world and in the communities we serve. This coronavirus pandemic and the recent conversations surrounding race in this country are like nothing we’ve known recently. When we look to the past to learn from the hardships the world has experienced, we find that we, as Americans and as humans, have endured much . . . from the pandemic in 1918, WWI, the Great Depression, WWII and its devastating aftermath, Korea, Vietnam, and more. Willis Allen Real Estate has endured throughout much of this. Our roots date back to 1914. Our leaders, agents, and staff have represented this company proudly and successfully since the beginning as patriotic Americans determined to do what was and is best for all. You will see an American flag displayed in each of our six offices throughout San Diego County, and I proudly display one on my flagpole at my home. But that doesn’t mean I’m satisfied that America couldn’t grow and improve. Real Estate, and WARE especially, are about community. People, homes, schools, businesses, churches, parks and open spaces. The people of our company bear this in mind. You will see our agents and staff volunteering, serving those in need, purposefully working and supporting their communities in many, many ways. This pandemic has given us time to reflect; and the racial inequality demonstrations have forced us to strive to improve what has been pointed out as needing changes. It has been a deep concerning reality check for all of us. My Navy experiences, which I have written about before, taught me many great lessons. One of the best was the respect we all had for each other and the inclusivity. Black, Hispanic, Asian, and white- from southern states to Alaska – each with a vital job to do, depended on each other

with our lives. As my squadron’s personnel officer, I spent hours in emotional heart to heart consoling - learning to know them. I recall many of those young men (it was before the time of women on ships in the Navy) with great respect and fondness. I remember their names in full. Regretfully, I don’t see enough like it today. We seem to be unwilling to listen and learn from those we are different from and those with whom we disagree. We need open, respectful, progressive dialogue! And we need respect. That is what we believe at Willis Allen. Listen and learn. Be open to new ideas, don’t discount what others may think. We use this in our contract of sales negotiations and we would like to see it in all kinds of discussions all over the world. I’ll say it once again – at Willis Allen we do not wish to be the biggest but to continue to be the best advisor to our clients, to our agents, and to our communities. Our minds are open and we’re listening and learning all the time. We’ve been doing so with respect and integrity for 106 years!

the henry The neutral palette and broadly striped awnings that adorn the facade of The Henry, as it faces a still-busy Orange Ave in Coronado, almost perfectly reflects the classic American fare that can be found within. It manages to be casual while elegant in its ambiance, timeless while innovative in its menu, and filled with quality items while not breaking the bank in its prices. At the time of this writing, patio seating was available, and it proved to be a perfect spot to people-watch while enjoying lunch. We tried the grilled fish tacos, filled with firm and delectable chunks of Alaskan halibut. The accompanying cucumber slaw managed to carry a hint of spice while still remaining crisp and refreshing. A grilled lime sat quietly to the side of the plate, inviting us to squeeze it over the top of everything.
