OUR PETS ARE FAMILY AND THIS FAMILY NEEDS OUR HELP! It was mid-January when I received the news that my dog Chloe had Lymphoma. I was devastated! Chris, my partner, said I took it harder than the diagnoses of my own cancer four years ago, and he was right! I understood what I was in for and I am a fighter, but with Chloe, she had no idea and I couldn’t tell her, that was the hardest part! At our very first meeting with her Oncologist, Dr. Brenda Phillips at Veterinary Specialty Hospital (VSH) in Sorrento Valley, we learned how they were going to conquer her cancer in the long six month chemo treatment plan for animals. I felt good about the plan, the doctor, and the fact that their biggest concern was keeping Chloe comfortable and playful throughout the whole process. Because really, dogs live simple lives and being able to play with her sisters and go for walks are what she looks forward to the most. When I came back to the hospital a few days later for her first treatment, I noticed a flyer on the bullet board by the coffee machine in the lobby for a Go Fund Me page for a dog named Kerry. Kerry is a four-year old Shetland Sheepdog. He earned his “Good Canine Citizen Award” prior to his diagnosis. Kerry was on track to be a Service and Therapy Dog able to visit local hospitals and senior living facilities and schools. His owner Ann, who is on a very tight income, was doing everything in her power to afford Kerry’s treatment, selling some of her personal items and visiting local recycling centers. Reading her flyer broke my heart, I felt so blessed to be able to afford Chloe’s treatment which runs around 9-15K for the whole 6 months, thank goodness you can pay as you go, so that makes it more manageable. But to think about how someone on a low fixed income was going to afford this was so saddening to me. I went on the site as soon as I got home and donated. But she needs so much more then I could afford, since I was already budgeting to pay for Chloe’s treatment. With that I decided I would try and help Ann to keep her beautiful dog Kerry alive and well, and that is why I am writing this to you, my readers and friends. I know times are tough right now with the COVID-19 Virus, but imagine trying to deal with this new situation, being sent home and not working, and on top of that worrying about a sick family member at the same time. So I ask you, please help Kerry and Ann and donate anything you can, any amount will help. Please help us to keep Kerry healthy and on track with her treatment and keep Ann sane. Don’t Neglect Your Home Security’s Health

Thousands of people are being asked to work and study from home during the current Coronavirus epidemic. Video conferences and virtual classrooms are sweeping through many large US cities. Internet enabled cameras in the home aren’t new, but with this spike in usage, let’s take the opportunity to focus on keeping your home and family safe from hackers. IoT – or “internet of things” devices make life easier by connecting our home functions to the internet so we can control them remotely. Obviously, this also creates a vulnerability. The online data provided by thermostat usage alone can implicate when someone is home or not. Add to that vulnerability the cameras featured on IoT devices such as security systems, SmartTVs, even our exercise equipment. If it has an app and connects to the internet, it can be hacked.

3 INDICATORS THAT HOUSING WILL WEATHER THIS STORM

I

In times of uncertainty, one of the best things we can do to ease our fears is to educate ourselves with research, facts, and data. Digging into past experiences by reviewing historical trends and understanding the peaks and valleys of what’s come before us is one of the many ways we can confidently evaluate any situation. With concerns of a global recession on everyone’s minds today, it’s important to take an objective look at what has transpired over the years and how the housing market has successfully weathered these storms.

2. A Recession Does Not Equal a Housing Crisis Next, take a look at the past five recessions in U.S. history. Home values actually appreciated in three of them. It is true that they sank by almost 20% during the last recession, but as we’ve identified above, 2008 presented different circumstances. In the four previous recessions, home values depreciated only once (by less than 2%). In the other three, residential real estate values increased by 3.5%, 6.1%, and 6.6% (see below):

1. The Market Today Is Vastly Different from 2008 We all remember 2008. This is not 2008. Today’s market conditions are far from the time when housing was a key factor that triggered a recession. From easy-to-access mortgages to skyrocketing home price appreciation, a surplus of inventory, excessive equity-tapping, and more – we’re not where we were 12 years ago. None of those factors are in play today. Rest assured, housing is not a catalyst that could spiral us back to that time or place.

3. We Can Be Confident About What We Know Concerns about the global impact COVID-19 will have on the economy are real. And they’re scary, as the health and wellness of our friends, families, and loved ones are high on everyone’s emotional radar. That said, we can be confident that, while we don’t know the exact impact the virus will have on the housing market, we do know that housing isn’t the driver. The reasons we move – marriage, children, job changes, retirement, etc. – are steadfast parts of life. As noted in a recent piece in the New York Times, “Everyone needs someplace to live.” That won’t change. Bottom Line …Concerns about a recession are real, but housing isn’t the driver. This is certainly turning into a year full of angst, uncertainty, global health issues, political explosions, and more. But there is an upside. Lower interest rates in the financial markets improves our ability to purchase real estate. We have a growing inventory of great properties - it is a great time to buy! I encourage you to continue to be positive. In five years we will each pat ourselves on the back because we made a wise purchase in 2020! We’ve weathered similar storms in the past, and over the years real estate has proven to be a good investment - not only financially, but also to afford owners the ability to enjoy an enviable San Diego lifestyle. Service to my country also taught me the importance of giving back to the world in which we live. For decades, I have personally helped in the fundraising efforts of our community hospital, Scripps Health. Additionally, as a company, Willis Allen Real Estate commits time, money and resources to local schools, youth sports, and more. As a founding member of La Jolla’s Community Foundation over 10 years ago, we have joined others to create a maintenance Assessment District (MAD) approved by the City of San Diego for La Jolla’s Village. This program, called Enhance La Jolla, has removed trash, power washed sidewalks and more. We now have funded an architectural group under the leadership of Mark Steele, to create a “Streetscape Plan” to beautify our Village to make us even prouder of the community in which we live. (And yes, additional donations will help make this a reality!) In short, community service is a hallmark of our company that dates back to our founding in 1914. In each of our offices, staff and agents embrace this commitment to community involvement. Since our arrival in Coronado, for example, we have consistently supported the Coronado Schools Foundation. One of our agents has chaired The Friends of Downtown in center city San Diego. As a company and with the help of our agents, we initiated and continue to underwrite the Point Loma Summer Concerts. Many more commitments are made by our staff - too numerous to list in this letter. These are examples of how our company values more than a sales transaction. agent spotlight get to know me After a 20-year career in the insurance industry, I took a hiatus to spend more time with our four children. My intent was to return to work but in a different career. Drawing on my business experience, I chose real estate and was licensed in 2008. As ‘empty nesters’ my husband and I moved Downtown and ultimately landed in Coronado. In my 36 years in San Diego I’ve had the unique opportunity to live in the suburbs, downtown and at the beach which provides me with valuable insight to share with my clients. cesarina Niccolò Angius grew up in the restaurant business. Three years ago, he moved from Rome to San Diego with his wife Cesarina (the restaurant’s namesake) and soon began selling homemade pasta at local farmer’s markets. With the help of some business partners, the duo turned their love for authentic, hand crafted, and timeless food into the restaurant that now sits on Voltaire Street between Point Loma and Ocean Beach. We tried the funghi with pappardelle and were immediately pleased. The cream based sauce carried flavors of fresh Cremini and Shiitake mushrooms; it was subtle yet refined, devoid of the overpowering dairy blast that you might find in the cream sauces at

some other establishments. The crumble of dried bread and herbs added pleasant texture to the dish, but the star of the show was the pasta. The pappardelle tasted like only simply made homemade pasta can: each bite has a chewy snap to it. It’s not quite al dente; pasta must be left to dry first if one seeks to hit that elusive mark, but its ability to absorb flavor- and its slight malleability- lifts itself up with the accompanying sauce to create a concert of texture and flavor. These two traits dance together as an indistinguishable pair while leaving your fork, beckoning you to go in for another bite.
