Lisa Evans had this house in her head for 10 years before she saw it through to reality in Whatcom

SUMAS — Nearly every light in Lisa Evans’ new home is on a dimmer. Whether that’s

in the main living areas, the lighting embedded in the outside walkways or even hallways, she has her dimmer option at the ready.

Light is a powerful design element, one used by Evans to create different settings in the evening and to welcome the natural light during the day. Evans knew what she wanted when it came to anything related to light, dimmers and all. And she knew what she wanted in a lot of areas of her home when it came time for architect Mark Bratt of Lynden to design the house she “had in her head for 10 years.”

Evans was born in Whatcom County, but moved away when she was quite young,

spending her life in East Texas. But she came back to the local area in 2010 and moved into a subdivision in Nooksack. She loved the people in her neighborhood, but hated the traffic and the tightness of it all — in Texas terms, of course. So she started looking for property, eventually finding a piece of land in the foothills near Sumas.

And she already had the house in her mind. Next it was up to Bratt and contractor Chuck Handy to turn the vision into

her reality.

That reality ended with a 4,020-squarefoot home that she moved into in 2014, one modeled to the ideas she’d been shaping for a decade. “Maybe I’ll go bankrupt doing this,” she said about her thoughts during the process, “but I’m going to do it.” And she did. “I’m proud of my house. It was a labor of love.”

Evans: Years of planning paid off in exacting details Continued from C5 Evans, who always wears a pair of overalls and said she looks like the “hired help,” had exacting specifications for everyone who worked on the project. She knew that she was demanding in her precision, but she also had nothing but praise in the end for Bratt, Handy and the entire team that worked to give her the home she had always wanted.

“I wanted a southern flair,” she said.

“Mark got it. He nailed it.”

Her Southern-style plantation home features wood, glass and stone as lead materials. Beyond those loves, Evans had specificity in design to help fill in all the other details along the way.

The home Stepping toward the front of the home, the Southern flair hits you from the start with a Juliette balcony hovering over the front drive. A drilled-rock fountain near the front entry punctuates the neatly manicured landscape and the entire path is lit, showing off Evans’ love of light from the outset.

Inside, the home opens up with large windows in the great room arched for a Southern touch and views of the landscape beyond. Wood floors with subfloor

heating — a luxury Evans didn’t know she’d love as much as she does — connect rooms, leading off the entry to one side, past a small powder room, to the master suite through oversized doors — “I wanted big, tall doors.”

The master suite has it all, from a doorway leading to the outdoor patio and the hot tub there to the oversized walkin closet and a full-feature bathroom drenched in natural light.

The home includes three propanefueled fireplaces, one in the master bedroom, another in the great room and the third upstairs in the bonus room. Evans opted for non-wood-burning to keep the mess to a minimum, but she did go for a wood-burning fireplace on the back patio.

The great room opens to the dining area, kitchen and the back patio with oversized ceilings and plenty of beams. “I wanted big windows and a big ceiling,” Evans said. “The curve of the window is big.

It is the heart of the beast.”

Bleeding together the great room with the dining area and kitchen was a natural way to tie together entertaining space, as having guests is a favorite activity for the kitchen-loving Evans.

SPRING HOME & GARDEN key component of the home. Dan Matheis of Riverside Cabinet Company helped with that. “I would build him a shrine if I could,” Evans said of Matheis's work. The custom work in the kitchen included an “appliance garage” that holds and hides her large blender, able to pop up for use when called upon.

Evans had plenty of little things she wanted in the kitchen, from the quartz counter she said never needs to be resealed and can handle a 500-degree pan no problem, to the soft-close drawers she’d never before had. Two ovens for convenient entertaining, a pot-filling spout above the stovetop and a spice rack embedded in the cabinet all add little touches. Since Evans entertains so much, she worked with Matheis for special serving platter racks inside the cabinets. “They are as handy as a pocket on a shirt,” Evans said.

While the lighting matters everywhere — “it sets the mood” — the ability to shape the ambience in the main living areas gives Evans the ability to entertain in a way she wants.

A hallway extends beyond the main living space, complete with a pantry that has shelves measured out to exact specifications. Some shelving is just high enough to stack two cans on top of each other and other portions have ample space for larger items that Evans knows she always wants on hand.

Two guest rooms and a guest bathroom don’t fall far from the main living space. On one side of the hall, a main

To create more interest in the hallway, Handy devised a built-in space for a prized piece of bronze art, “Girl with Tambourine,” that includes a special pedestal and lighting. Evans said the art has been with her for years, both in Nooksack and in Texas, but it never had a proper place.

At the end of the hall is a mud/laundry room that connects to the garage. In the room Evans wanted enough space for storage and the work that needs to be done there. She even has a spot tucked behind a closet for a cat’s litter box so it was well out of sight.

The end of the hall also has stairs leading to the partial second floor, created as a suite in and of itself. A guest room there — with views of mountains — has a nice guest bathroom, a linen closet and a bonus room with a kitchenette. Evans said she added extra insulation to the area so the unit has a feeling of self-containment.

Evans uses the bonus room as an oversized office, having filled the room with keepsakes from her dad’s days as a pharmacist and her own many careers, from medical to finance to law (not even counting a fire department stint). It is off this bonus room where we find not one, but two Juliette balconies, one facing the front of the house and the other the back.

Outside, the back patio is partially covered and features a beer fridge, outdoor fireplace and a table named Walter. The table was a gift from neighbors after a tree — the tree was named Walter, so the table

is named Walter — was removed from their property and the wood was used to make both the table and the mantel.

The wrap Evans knows that “this is a lot of house for one person” and she built it not only to satisfy her vision of a home, but also as an investment.

She one day hopes to build nearly the same home, but slightly smaller

and without an upstairs.

For now, though, this home, this “labor of love,” came out to her liking. “Chuck was so patient with me and all my specifications,” she said. “I give him full marks.” In fact, she was so happy with how well everything turned out that she hosted a contractor appreciation dinner at her home, able to fully use the kitchen and entertainment space. And, of course, the lighting.

A place to grow Ferndale Community Garden provides spaces for locals to grow produce this summer

FERNDALE — The Ferndale Friendship Community Garden had its first growing season in 2008, but garden coordinator Gloria Perez still talks to people who don’t even know it exists.

“They say, ‘What community garden?’” Perez said.

The Ferndale Friendship Community Garden is located on Ferndale Road behind Pioneer Park.

While its presence may not be wellknown around town, it is certainly felt in a number of places, including the Ferndale Boys & Girls Club, the Ferndale Food Bank

and in the homes of the people who use the garden season after season.

Perez said the community garden is a perfect way for people without the space to keep their own garden to grow food in a suitable, welcoming environment.

Obtaining a plot begins with contacting Perez at 223-3836 or at rainglo@comcast.net. Spaces can be rented on a sliding pay scale from $10 to $20 plus a refundable $10 cleaning fee and 15 hours of volunteer work required.

Community gardeners grow everything from thyme to garlic to marionberries. In recent years, those gardeners have included youngsters.

Nicole Murray, program director at the Boys & Girls Club of Ferndale, said the Boys & Girls Club has been bringing kids to the community garden for the past three or four years.

ums,” Murray said. “It could be as simple as talking about different flowers, or we’ve had people bring in live bees to talk about how bees pollinate flowers and make honey. We talk about soil composition and decomposition, and composting. We’ve planted starts at the garden in the past.

We talk about harvesting weeds and why we don’t want them in our garden, and we talk about animals in the garden. It’s good discussion.”

The Boys & Girls Club also hosts a cooking club in which kids can cook the vegetables grown at the community garden. The club has its own raised beds onsite as well.

Murray said the Boys & Girls Club’s involvement in the garden has helped facilitate learning in many different areas.

“Gloria has been a great resource,” Murray said.

The Ferndale Food Bank has also been using the community garden as a resource. A five-bed Giving Garden grows food exclusively for the Ferndale Food Bank.

There’s a currently unused space connected to the community garden that the food bank will use for an expanded presence. Eagle Scout candidate Nathan Pringle will construct a new hoop house (a greenhouse held up by metal hoops), donated by Cargill, to make the food bank’s growing ability a little more versatile.

“Ryan England and the S.H.I.F.T. organization are also going to help in that expanded space,” Nevan said. “They’ll be planting very deliberate produce that will really be meal-making kinds of produce.

Plus, he’s going to use the hoop house to grow starts and that kind of stuff. We’re going to experiment with growing stuff like tomatoes and lettuce and spinach in the hoop house during the off-season.”

Perez took over operation of the community garden from founder Andrea Tranor, who moved out of state in 2010.

She’s now ready to hand over the day-today operation of the community garden to someone new.

“I have done it since the summer of 2010,” Perez said. “I love the garden and I’ll still be here. I’ll still help as an advisor, but it needs freshness, a fresh person.”

There are also two lead volunteer positions open, and eight beds remain up for rental.

Perez said the satisfaction of growing one’s own food is her favorite part of using the community garden.

“There are so many people,” she said. “It’s this diverse group, and somehow they manage to find this one thing in common. They all want to grow some kind of vegetables. Some are doing it for their families, others are single, some are doing to because it’s the most delicious way to enjoy vegetables.”

Walls & Windows doubling showroom space in next two months Expanding Hannegan Road business is also adding three to staff

BELLINGHAM — Walls & Windows, owned by Mike and Karen Valich, is in expansion mode.

In 2015, sales surpassed the $1 million mark. Within the next two months the business at 4131 Hannegan Rd. will add three new full-time employees and will double its size to 3,000 square feet for retail, shipping and production.

Known for custom-made window shadings by HunterDouglas and window awnings for home and business, Walls & Windows was founded in 1982. Initially located on State Street and then Iowa Street, it moved to Hannegan near Bakerview four years ago.

Now it is taking over the adjacent space vacated by Walker’s Healthy Pet, which relocated to Mount Vernon. The existing space will be maintained as retail, with room in the back for repairs.

Freight and a new custom on-site drapery construction area will occupy next door.

Walls & Windows’ new full range of products will include draperies, sheer window coverings, slip covers, decorative pillows and bolsters, and seat cushions.

Beth Baker, who has been commercially sewing for over 30 years, will oversee the in-house custom work. While new to Walls & Windows, Baker has operated her own custom business, Sew Like the Wind, on Orcas Island, office manager Rebecca Cormier said. Yikes, organizing your garage Approach it with a good attitude Definition of a garage: That catch-all section of our homes that never seems to get as much TLC as it deserves.

It’s where the overflow of holiday decorations, outgrown clothes and sports equipment converge, usually in disarray.

Let’s agree it’s time to take back control of this versatile space in your home. The garage has much to offer if you’re willing to regularly maintain it. This may mean hanging new shelving for extra storage space or repainting the floor for a protective, great-looking shine.

Here are three bits of advice as you approach this postponed task: 1. Give yourself enough time.

Many homeowners think they can power through a garage reorganization in a matter of a couple of hours.

Sure, if your garage is already in relatively good shape, that may be possible. But for those of us looking to complete an organizational overhaul, it is best to devote the bulk of a weekend, or more, to the chore.

Not doing so can leave you feeling frustrated by a job half done. Give yourself enough time to not only assess your current garage storage situation, but then also to put together a plan that highlights what goes where and how much you’re willing to spend on new storage materials.

2. Be ready to donate Overflow can be a real problem in the garage. Fish-

ing poles, soccer balls and kids’ bikes may as well call the garage their own. Without ample space for these materials, the garage’s walls may feel like they are caving in on you.

The solution: Give things away.

Plenty of organizations offer some sort of item drop-off. Start a donate pile outside of your garage to collect all the extra items for which you have no use. Take your extra toys and baseball gloves to a deserving charity, but only if you’re sure you won’t need them again down the road.

3. Never organize alone.

One of the best tips for organizing your garage is to invite friends and family members over to help. A major garage overhaul can be time-consuming, requiring numerous hands on deck if you’re hoping to finish anytime

soon.

And it keeps your spirits up for the job.

Call over some friends and family members. Have a list of specific responsibilities for volunteers to maximize their time when they are helping you. And remember to always treat your helpers to hot coffee or lunch, a gesture that will let them know they are appreciated.
