Homeward Designs starting discussions Lynden firm ready to talk residential home design

LYNDEN — Homeward Designs owners Monty Ecalbarger and Gerald Veltkamp want to start a discussion about home design with visitors to the BIAWC Home & Garden Show.

“A lot (of visitors) are not aware of design firms, so it is good to meet people and discuss projects,” Ecalbarger said about hosting a booth at the annual show for the third time in the last four years.

Ecalbarger originated Homeward Designs in 1986 when he was still an engineer at Intalco. In 2007 Veltkamp joined as a partner and the two are located in downtown Lynden at 204 Sixth St. They focus primarily on residential and multi-residential designs, whether new construction, developments, remodels or additions.

Ecalbarger said they now spend about 20 percent of their time dealing with land-use and regulatory issues, an area of design that used to be easier to navigate. “There is a minefield of regulations and we help people with that,” he said.

With Ecalbarger’s engineering background and Veltkamp’s history as a design and project manager for Dykstra Construction, the pair help clients with cost, design and product. “We want to help people become informed,” Ecalbarger said.

At the 2016 Home & Garden Show, Homeward Designs plans to have a booth with plenty of pictures detailing their work, a Power Point rotating through designs and flyers explaining the business. The pair also has stock plans they can sell or modify, often a great starting point for someone looking to build new.

“Most of all, we want to be able to chat with people,” Ecalbarger said. “We are a service, so we want to help people through the process.”

Good to Go Meat Pies finds local following Healthy meaty treat has a story behind it

WHATCOM — A few years ago, not many Whatcom County residents knew what a “pasty” was, but we are finding out now about these tasty old-style meat pies, thanks to Holly Bevan-Bumford.

Good to Go Meat Pies opened four years ago, in January 2012, at its first location in downtown Everson at 128 W. Main St., not far from City Hall.

It was while having a food booth at the Lynden Farmers Market that owner/

founder Holly decided to open a second permanent location just around the corner in Lynden at 305 Grover St., across from the library.

“Lynden has been very supportive and the residents are finding the concept of the business to help busy working families appealing,” Bevan-Bumford said. The pasties are fully cooked and are packaged to eat right away, or put into the fridge or freezer.

“We are very committed to supporting local farms as we source our ingredients. This has made participating in the Bellingham Farmers Market ideal for us,” she said. “Many of our farmers are at the market with us.

Holly, as a native of Michigan, knows all about how the pasty (pronounced PASS-tee) came to be. This handy meatand-vegetables meal was the perfect lunch made by families for the early Cornish copper miners in the UP (upper peninsula) of Michigan. Similarly, it now is a smart nutritious choice for today’s busy commuters on the run — and something far healthier and tastier than most fast food.

Bevan-Bumford helped a friend with a bakery that served pasties about 12 years ago in Nooksack, and she also had a food vending truck for 10 summers when her children were young baking wood-fired pizzas for local events. It all prepared her for Good to Go Meat Pies.

Seven different types of pasties are offered. Two new versions, lamb and curry chicken, were launched just a week ago.

“Our chicken pot pie pasty is probably our most popular, but I think that is because we all were raised on chicken pot pies and we gravitate to that one in particular,” Bevan-Bumford said. “Most folks work their way through our menu and find their favorites.”

Everything is made from scratch and fresh ingredients are sourced locally.

“Folks often comment on how you can taste the difference.

Our classic Cornish Pasty, that the business is based on, uses Meadow Fed Farms grassfed beef, Broadleaf Farm potato and onions, Terra Verde rutabagas, Hopewell Farm carrots in season and we use Fairhaven Flour Mill All Purpose Organic Flour in all of our pastry. In the summer months, that one pasty is about 95 percent locally sourced,” she said.

Curly's Carpet Repair a quality specialist He has earned testimonials in NW Washington, B.C.

WHATCOM ­— For his carpet repair business, Pablo “Curly” Schroeder lists his contact hours as 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. all weekdays and almost the same on Sundays.

He does work in both Whatcom and Skagit counties and widely across the Vancouver metro area. He can be reached at cell phone numbers in both the United States and Canada.

From that information on his website, you might expect Curly’s Carpet Repair to have a sizeable team scurrying around to cover all the bases.

Nope. It’s essentially Pablo himself working very hard and doing a good job — along with a few contractors he personally approves of.

Even the home page photo of three guys is a plug for Pablo and good times with his two brothers back in North Dakota where they grew up.

“I’m big in the sense that people are contacting me from all over the state and Canada,” he said by phone from Vancouver, B.C. Although he lives in British Columbia, Schroeder is frequently crossing the border — two jobs lined up together make it worth it — and he is adamant that whatever he earns from jobs in the U.S.

is spent back in the U.S., right down to groceries.

Pablo is also big into testimonials of satisfied customers as his calling card for more business.

He has accumulated dozens of such comments now, including many from Bellingham. This is one: “Pablo was very professional and knowledgeable about what needed to be done to fix our carpet wrinkles. He was able to complete the work the same day and the rooms look amazing — like new carpet!”

His services are: eliminating bubbles, ripples and stains; cleaning; restretching carpet; and fixing tears and blemishes.

“I show up on the job like I am supposed to, do good work, and people see that and say that,” he summarizes.

Pablo did carpet installing going back to college days in the 1970s. He got a master’s degree from Gonzaga University and also lived in Montana. After traveling the world for two years, he came to the Bellingham area and started this business full-time in 1992.

“Curly” is a nickname he has had in life, and so he uses it for the business.

Curly’s Carpet Repair has been at the home show before and will be at the 2016 one. It is good exposure of his speciality to the many home and building owners who attend, always worthwhile in leading to new business, he said.

Birch gets you ready for spring yard tasks Company also holds annual gift card drawing at show

Birch Equipment Rental & Sales will be back at the Home Show this year with a variety of Husqvarna equipment on display and available at the company’s location in Bellingham.

One special eye-catching item is the Husqvarna Swedish rider, a center-articulating mower that isn’t seen much.

There will also be a sale on gloves and glasses, along with one of Birch’s biggest annual draws at the show: the “Name the Equipment Game.”

“We’ll be asking people just to name the type of equipment, and if they get it right, they’ll get a little prize from us,” Birch assistant manager Don Holt said. “And I’m usually out there with my little megaphone, trying to get people to enter our drawing.”

One of Birch’s home show traditions is to give out a gift card at the end of the show via a drawing.

Birch’s Environmental Division, which specializes in environmental and spill cleanup, will also be represented.

Grandiflora a leader of interior decor trends Stopping by show booth earns a ‘surprise’ to be used at store in Lynden, now into its 16th year

LYNDEN — Happy 15th birthday to Grandiflora Home & Garden, located at 719 Grover St. in the former Masonic Hall with a Bill Swinburnson mural alongside. The business opened in November 2000.

“My dad’s mom was a lover of roses, so my grandpa Stremler became an amazing rose gardener,” co-owner Trisha Brink said. “He was famously known for spending hours in his rose garden on the corner of Stremler Drive and Front Street right across the street from the Fairway shopping center.”

This was combined with a love of Peegee hydrangeas that she, her late mother Jan Stremler and two sisters Carrie Visser and LaVon Vander Werff shared: “We married the two together with the term ‘Grandiflora,’ which loosely translated means ‘largely flowered,’” Brink said, explaining the store’s name.

As far as home trends go, it might be a bit of a surprising look for those who are truly “traditionalists.”

“We try to do a good job of mixing our local flavor into all that we do,” Brink said of Grandiflora. “The biggest look right now is a very industrial-inspired rustic yet modern style with natural woods: Think metallic such as copper and brass along with succulents and houseplants. That look has been gaining popularity for a few years now.”

The “hottest” new look on the market may be a stark white backdrop littered with black-and-gold geometrics and pale pastels such as blush and powder blue.

Grandiflora was selected as one of the few gift shops in the Whatcom County area to participate in a new venture called www.shoptiques.com. It’s a third-party seller that takes a small commission to sell items.

Garden Spot Nursery to bring carnivorous plants to local show Bellingham business is now 30 years old

BELLINGHAM — ­ Marcy Plattner and her staff have slowly grown the Garden Spot Nursery for the last 30 years. Before she got the land at the corner of Alabama and King streets, she tended to a portable nursery down the road. Each year, Plattner has expanded her selection and attracted more loyal customers.

This is the Garden Spot’s third year at the Home & Garden Show.

The business will be represented this time by Antoni Stevens, who has worked at the nursery for almost four years.

Stevens looks forward to the Lynden visit because it gives him an opportunity to show off rare plants.

This year, he will showcase carnivorous plants, some of which are endangered.

The Garden Spot Nursery has a unique selection of bug-eating plants, Stevens said.

“They are amazing,” he said.

“We are watching evolution before our eyes.”

Carnivorous plants are easy to maintain and beneficial for anyone who cooks, Stevens said. Those with gnats can put a small bug-eater

in the kitchen to eliminate the problem while supplying food for the plant.

Stevens sold every one of the carnivorous plants the Garden Spot Nursery stocked last year, and he plans on having another big year for the popular plants.

Another fun plant is a microgreen, Plattner said. These small greens can grow on a kitchen window sill and be used in salads. Putting something directly from the plant to the plate is a great

way to show kids where their food comes from, she said.

To Plattner, the Lynden Home & Garden Show is an opportunity to connect gardeners in the regional community.

“It’s like a three-day party,” she said.

Each year, the Garden Spot Nursery staff has brought something different to the event, Plattner said, and as always, they plan on making new friends while appreciating plants.
