FALL HOME & GARDEN them. Inside the studio, a table is adorned with trinkets and ceramic chickens. These are in place of the live ones Mary wanted to keep in the back yard. Alas, Leroy didn’t like the idea of chickens. He built his studio instead, so Mary gets to decorate with them. Since Leroy uses the garage and his studio, Mary figured it was time for her to have a place for her gardening tools, she said. Three years ago, Leroy built her shed out of cedar barn wood and added a window that used to be in the house. This shed is more her style, Mary said. The wood is unfinished and rough. “I don’t need all the sanding and paint,” Mary said. “I like to see it age.” Leroy’s handiwork can also be seen in the birdhouses on the property. He dubbed the one in front of Mary’s shed “a bird hotel,” because it has two stories. It sits on the high stump of the locust tree it is made out of; the Kings cut down the top of the tree four years ago. Mary keeps a scrapbook of the improvements they have make to the house and yard. When she flips through it, her attention to detail is apparent. The Kings have put 14 years of work in, and their dedication to every aspect of the property can be seen just by walking past.
