Thanks for letting us be a part of your season!

WHATCOM — As the autumn air of fall sports gets pierced by stadium lights illuminating cleat-torn grass and cool temperatures push some inside gymnasiums, the weather isn’t the only change this season. A new year of fall sports brings fresh coaching faces.
With volunteers by their sides, the new slate of coaches aims to win, of course, but also help teach student-athletes life lessons that extend beyond the lingering autumn air. Let’s meet the fresh faces:
Lynden Christian
Jerimy Saldivar fills the girls soccer head coaching spot this year following Brent DeRuyter’s resignation after over 20 years leading the Lyncs.
“It just felt right all around and how it worked out,” Saldivar said about taking the position. “There’s a tiny bit of pressure — because anything you do there’s going to be a comparison — but I feel that I have a little bit of an advantage being familiar with a lot of the families and girls through North County Alliance.”
Saldivar is a local soccer legend already after having co-founded travel soccer club North County Alliance FC in 2015. Since then, his club has grown to 24 teams and an additional nearly 1,000 young athletes playing in the
club’s Rebel Rec recreational program.
“My main goal — why I did Alliance and why I’m doing this — is to keep building soccer in Lynden,” Saldivar said.
“I hope that we can continue to build on that foundation from [DeRuyter].”
After growing up in Mount Vernon and graduating from Seattle University, Saldivar followed a job to Lynden. His four kids all played soccer for Lynden High School, so Saldivar knows this community’s commitment to excellence as an athlete and coach.
“People take pride in where they are, and that all comes from setting a standard of excellence,” Saldivar said. “You have to set a standard of expectation when you’re playing sports and those two feed into each other.”
This season’s Lynden Christian roster features talented players Saldivar has
coached during the club seasons. Hunting the first girls soccer state championship in school history is important to Saldivar, but it’s not the only goal for his team.
“Going to state doesn’t mean that we’re focused on winning,” Saldivar said. “But if you get to state, it’s a pretty good reflection of how hard you’ve worked and the level of excellence that you’ve set. If you’ve done all those other things, the winning will take care of itself.”
One of Saldivar’s goals when he took over was to make girls soccer fun and competitive. Saldivar began this season with a unique glow-in-the-dark midnight practice. He’s also began awarding players with an offensive and defensive MVP “link” chain after games, like the home run trident the Seattle Mariners use.
Even with 10 years of club
This year, Eli Varner, above, takes over as Lynden High School’s new cross country coach. On opposite page, Jerimy Saldivar fills the girls soccer head coaching spot this year following Brent DeRuyter’s resignation after over 20 years leading the Lyncs. (Zen Hill/ Lynden Tribune)
coaching experience, Saldivar is still learning how to best coach at the high school level.
“We get five days a week to talk through things, to talk through tactics,” Saldivar said. “We work and prepare our team to get better through the season, instead of peaking early and then being worn out when it matters.”
This year, Eli Varner takes over as Lynden High School’s new cross country coach. Varner spent the last eight years assisting Layne Hutchins.
“I want to push our athletes to run more and run harder than they think they can,” Varner said. “I want to see the kids surpass their goals and surpass the limits that they set for themselves.”
Varner is a 2013 Lynden alum. After his prep career, Varner ran for Whitworth University for two seasons.
Team success is important to Varner (the Lions have never won a state cross country title), but winning isn’t his only goal.
“With cross country being such an individual sport, setting goals is really important early on in the season,” Varner said. “Success for us looks like building culture and doing the best that we can.”
Varner looks to lead Lynden into a new era as the head coach. One of his earliest changes was to relocate Lynden’s home meet to Berthusen Park, where the team will also practice once a week.
“One of the best parts about cross country is to run in cool
places,” Varner said. “You can make the workouts pretty fun by going to some cool places.”
The fall is the main event for cross country, but Varner organized an off-season training program alongside assistant coach Jamie Williams to get his team in better shape come race season.
“I think we’re going to see a lot of benefits from that,” Varner said. “This year our senior class has really stepped up … I’m excited to see what they’ll do this year.”
Lars Olson is Nooksack Valley’s new cross country head coach.
Olson takes over from Adrian Cedillo, who was the Pioneers head coach for the past two seasons.
Olson is an ecology and forensics teacher at Nooksack Valley High School. He attended the University of Washington and Western Washington University.
The Golden Eagles enter fall sports season with Brian Lynch taking over as the new Ferndale boys tennis head coach.
“The cool thing about tennis is that it’s a lifelong sport. It doesn’t have to be a sport you only play in high school,” Lynch
said. “The number one goal is for them to have fun.”
Lynch was a member of Ferndale’s first tennis team in spring 1994. He knows what it takes to be a Golden Eagle.
“Ferndale sports have a history of excellence and great competitors, and that’s something I’m trying to rebuild with the tennis team,” Lynch said.
After growing in up in Ferndale, Lynch graduated from Western Washington University in 2001, but he didn’t play much tennis after high school. His daughter Aubrey, who plays on Ferndale’s girls tennis team, has been the major
motivation for Lynch’s return to tennis.
Ferndale’s former girls tennis coach Mark Griep recruited Lynch to come coach during a summer lesson Aubrey was at and Lynch reentered the Ferndale tennis scene. Lynch has assisted the girls varsity team for the last two years.
“We’re working on understanding the strategy of the game and trying to build good fundamentals in order to execute a strategy,” Lynch said. “We need to have the mentality that we need to look like a team.”

North Whatcom County football is well underway and familiar names lead the way again.
Last year, 2A Lynden and 1A Lynden Christian and Nooksack Valley reached the state quarterfinals.
For at least Lynden and Lynden Christian, the quarterfinals represent a way marker on a path toward bigger dreams in 2025.
For Lynden, defense may provide the difference. “I would say, right now, defense is the strength of our team,” said Blake VanDalen, head coach. “Every coach would tell you that’s kind of what you want. You want to
have a strong offensive line and a really solid defense.”
The Lions have already started the season on solid footing in both those categories. It helps when seven starters return for the defense along with a host of players who were in the rotation. “Last year, our entire defense felt like it was brand new,” VanDalen said. “We kind of picked up where we left off [this year] and we had a lot of our postseason checks already in.”
While the Lynden offense looks different with junior quarterbacks Lukas Lalji and Gordy Bedlington leading the way for the first time, VanDalen said summer scrimmages against top-
flight programs Bellevue, Lakes and Tumwater helped forge a new identity. “You learn a lot about yourself in a very competitive atmosphere,” he said. Offensive returners include receivers Dani Bowler and Sam Arango and linemen Zach Dykstra, Logan Ostry and Carter Vrieling, along with running back and linebacker Malachi Koenen.
For Lynden Christian, quarterback Eli Maberry is ready for his second year leading the Lyncs. And he has plenty of returning help.
“Our staff and our young men want to grow every week,” said Greg Terpstra, head coach. “A lot of guys who saw action last season
realize they’re veterans, but also realize they have a long way to go and a long way to grow.”
The offense looks to utilize its speed and skill, and the team will rely on captains Luke VanRooyen, Boyce Robertson and Maberry to join with juniors Chris Kooiman, Kayden Veldman and Wyatt Kamphouse.
I want them to completely embrace the concept of sacrifice,” Terpstra said. “If the young men of LC can all play a selfless brand of football, coupled with a staff who is also willing to be servant-leaders, we will be more successful than any hardware can provide.”
