Coming home to comfort

The entire Weg family is enjoying the country home north of Lynden they moved into last April. (Tim Newcomb/Lynden Tribune)

Weg family puts modern touches on home built near farm roots north of Lynden By Tim Newcomb tim@lyndentribune.com

LYNDEN — Colby Weg had always thought about one day buying his grandfather’s house north of Lynden off Pangborn Road and giving it his own style. That

thought, though, took a shift when property adjacent to the home he grew up near became available.    Colby and his wife Terell jumped at the opportunity to purchase a one-acre parcel and combine it with a larger plot of land adjacent to their family. Doing that met zoning requirements needed to build their own home on the now 10.5-acre site.    It was laborious work going through a county lot-line adjustment, getting beyond wetland studies, running utilities to the site and clearing some trees out of the way for the home’s footprint. Finally, the young couple — they have two young boys

with a third on the way — could put a focus on building.    First, though, came embracing the scenic views. “We were able to get (the home) where we had good views of the mountains,” Colby said. “Any farther from the road gets too expensive on utilities.”    Wedged into trees and near a barn, the Wegs can look across a field at the back of their home to where Colby grew up and his grandpa and dad raise cows. Beyond that, though, are the majestic mountains that make Whatcom County so spectacular to live in.    Colby positioned the home to take

advantage of that scenery — a row of trees will soon block most of the barn view — with the living room, kitchen, back patio and master bedroom all facing toward the field and mountains.    More than simply positioning the home — having built their previous home within city limits — the Wegs had a solid idea of what they wanted out of their new 3,300 square feet of space.    It all started with the outside aesthetic. Terell opted for a steep pitch on the roof for a dramatic effect, a pitch that Colby said the truss company hadn’t seen before on a home like theirs.

More antique furnishing will fill in an artistically wallpapered wall in the master bedroom. (Tim Newcomb/Lynden Tribune)

FALL HOME & GARDEN    From there, the design of the home takes shape with the front door, a find from a salvage yard that the Wegs then completely restored and painted for personal touch. Builder Wes Wiersma framed around the find. That architectural flair and artistic touch helps set the tone overall, which Terell dubs as “cottage chic,” everything from arches to clean whites to white-planked ceilings.    From the outset, the Wegs identified things they wanted different from their previous home, such as adding in a formal dining area off the main entry and having a kitchen island large enough for sitting around. While some things changed, they also held on to aspects of the past they appreciated, such as having all four bedrooms on the main floor and tossing a bonus room upstairs as the only room atop the main floor.    “We were pretty focused and knew what we wanted,” Terell said. “We did a lot more white on purpose.”    The entry spills into the family room, which flows into the kitchen and the oversized island. An area rug in the living room defines that space while the white oak floor continues throughout a majority of the home, offering the Wegs a way to practically manage the bumps and spills supplied by a young family. (An area rug proves much more economical to replace than entire rooms of carpet, plus light wood hides scratches easier than dark wood.)    The exterior roof pitch plays sharply in the living room, accented by wood paneling painted white, a color scheme that mixes with a blue-green to provide the look for the home. Large eight-foot patio doors open to a covered back patio — the decision to cover, the Wegs said, proved vitally important during this past summer after moving in in April 2015 — in order to enjoy the outdoor space amid lots of sun. The patio has proven “so nice and peaceful.”    Farther outside, Colby said, he’s been able to spend time with the boys in the woods, finding horned owls and bald eagles.    Back inside, a small wet bar near both the kitchen and living room and adjacent to the patio doors provides an entertainment stopover. Using mirrors on built-in cabinets in the living room is a touch Terell

The kitchen carries the white color theme throughout, to white quartz counters, white cabinets and white backsplash. and pots and pans storage below. Along with the main sink in the island, the Wegs added yet another sink on the opposite side of the kitchen in their coffee mecca. The area tucks all their appliances away in a cabinet — with plug-ins — that fully opens for easy access next to a prep station (a key location for Terell’s heavy canning

efforts). The Wegs have dual dishwashers built into the island, one on either side of the sink, which Terell said is great both for a growing family and for hosting. An oversized refrigerator will help keep the family stocked as the boys grow. The entry to a walk-in pantry in the kitchen is an artistic glass door.

Arches connect the living room with the dining room at the front of the house, adjacent to a short hallway that leads to a bathroom and two bedrooms for the kids. A guest bedroom and in-room bath sit off the back of the living room, near the patio.    Off the entry, heading in the opposite direction of the living and dining rooms, a short hallways takes you past a small den, an antique armoire from Terell’s mom that provides a stopover before heading out to the garage, a laundry room larger than in their previous home, a small powder room for guests and extra space for storage, all tucked behind the kitchen.    Continuing around the kitchen leads you to the master bedroom.    Another antique furniture piece currently in the process of restoration will make an appearance against the artistic wallpapered wall in the master. Views there capture Mount Baker. And the master bathroom doesn’t disappoint with carrara marble throughout, a soaker tub and a glassed-in rain shower that will eventually also become a steam shower once the couple encloses it.    Throughout the creation of the home, Terell said she realized that finding different lighting options over time helped provide a powerful visual appeal and at the proper cost level. “It was exciting to find different pieces on budget,” she said. Whether a chandelier in the master or unique pieces for the living room, Terell kept it different and interesting with her lighting.    But it all comes together to provide a truly cottage chic creation, a modern take on Weg family history.

Attention to every detail Mary and Leroy King make their downtown Lynden home and garden eye-catching By Brooke Hanson intern@lyndentribune.com

LYNDEN — Iris flowers are planted in front of the home at 305 Sixth St., but the owners don’t know where they came from. One morning this June, Mary King looked out and saw something sitting on the bench in their yard. As she got closer, she saw it was irises with a note attached.    “These are back, purple and white — thought you’d like ‘em,” it read.    The yard nearby two churches is often admired by churchgoers and passersby, but no one has taken credit for the irises yet, Mary said. If the anonymous giver happens to walk by, he or she can see their gift among the many plants that make the King property into a striking garden.    Mary and Leroy King moved into their house in 2001 after 22 years of living in Langley, B.C., for Leroy’s work. Mary grew up in Lynden and wanted to return, she said. But growing up in the county, she never expected to live in a downtown area. That is, until they found this property.    The two-bedroom, one-bath fixerupper was just what the couple needed. After doing initial renovations they weren’t too excited about, like getting new siding and replacing the electrical system, the Kings started getting creative.    The yard was bare when the Mary

FALL HOME & GARDEN and Leroy moved in, and over the years they’ve made it their own. The couple spends five or more hours a week gardening, Leroy said. Summer plants are quickly fading, so they’re now getting replaced for fall.    “I try to have something in bloom all year long,” Mary said.    As fall approaches, the chrysanthemums are blooming. Mary hopes they will stay strong through the season until her winter viburnum starts to bloom.    Though the outside of the house takes more work to maintain, the inside has undergone renovations too. Mary and Leroy took out the linoleum and carpet, which revealed the original hardwood floors. The house was built in 1922, so the wood is a little soft, Mary said, but it was a wonderful surprise to find.    Leroy, who works for TrueValue Hardware, has a knack for creating something new out of old. He’s been woodworking as far back as he can remember. Behind the house, the added garage stands between two small sheds Leroy built — his and hers. The structures are decorative, but functional. Each has significance to its user.    Leroy’s shed, which the Kings call his “studio,” is made from doors that used to hang in the house. When Mary and Leroy moved in and started their renovations, they saved the old doors — and six years ago, they found this use for

Alas, Leroy didn’t like the idea of chickens. He built his studio instead, so Mary gets to decorate with them.    Since Leroy uses the garage and his studio, Mary figured it was time for her to have a place for her gardening tools, she said. Three years ago, Leroy built her shed out of cedar barn wood and added a window that used to be in the house.    This shed is more her style, Mary said. The wood is unfinished and rough.    “I don’t need all the sanding and paint,” Mary said. “I like to see it age.”    Leroy’s handiwork can also be seen in the birdhouses on the property. He dubbed the one in front of Mary’s shed “a bird hotel,” because it has two stories. It sits on the high stump of the locust tree it is made out of; the Kings cut down the top of the tree four years ago.    Mary keeps a scrapbook of the improvements they have make to the house and yard. When she flips through it, her attention to detail is apparent. The Kings have put 14 years of work in, and their dedication to every aspect of the property can be seen just by walking past.

Louis Auto & Residential Glass touts the options    WHATCOM — It might be surprising to the average homeowner to realize the science behind shower doors, claims Rick Adelstein, owner of Louis Auto and Residential Glass.    Start with coating treatments for easy cleaning or shower door glass with built-in protection against corrosion and discoloration.    Go on to the nifty hydro-slide systems of leading manufacturers, or the wave and opaque patterns that can be built into doors, and you’ve got more to choose from than you thought possible.

Louis works with three main manufacturers in shower products: CR Laurence, Agalite and Cardinal. “All three feature products in every taste and price range, so there’s no doubt we’ll have something for you. And our expert installers will make sure the finished product looks as good in your house as it does in the showroom,” the company says.    Looking for an enclosure to add that wow factor to your bathroom? Or how about something a little more traditional and budget-oriented? The variety goes from standard doors to steam rooms and custom designs, Adelstein says.    Call the residential department of Louis at 734-3840 to schedule a free consultation and estimate.

Sumas approves plan for 48-lot Hovel Estates    SUMAS — The Sumas City Council at its Aug. 24 meeting approved a preliminary plat for a Hovel Estates subdivision consisting of 48 lots.    The subdivision will be located on Hovel Road in the southeast corner of the city limits. The construction will be done in multiple phases, beginning with a first phase of 19 lots, according to Sumas Public Works Director Rod Fadden.    Part of the property was annexed into the city limits roughly seven years ago, at which point there was a preliminary plat for about 25 lots. But when the recession hit, the original plans stalled, until the property changed ownership, Fadden said.    “The new owners are focused on getting (it) going,” Fadden said. “Our inventory for lots for Sumas is down to like two or three, so we’re really excited about getting this plat approved and to start building.”

Refresh the garden shed

This fall, plan a makeover for looks, longer life of your yard shed

Has your backyard shed become an eyesore? Are rusty metal and rotting wood the first things you notice when you head in for the mower?    Then it’s time to spend some time rejuvenating it this fall. With less than $100 and a creative eye, you can overhaul your favorite outdoor space into one you can be proud of.    Sometimes an outdated shed that has seen better days simply needs paint. Special metal paints can even cover up rusty areas that immediately draw your attention. Choose the color you’d like your shed to be and head down to the local hardware store.    Opt for tough exterior paint that can stand up to the ele-

You can get as innovative as you choose in redoing your garden shed. (Courtesy photo) ments, and don’t forget a separate color for the trim work. Royal blue or dark gray is complemented wonderfully by pops of white door and window trim.   Consider matching your home’s colors, too. If you recently resided your home with a new color, it may be time to make your outdoor structures such as garden sheds and barns match.

Once the outside is swell, it’s time to make sure you actually want to go into the shed. Incorporate shelving and smaller storage units to allow for more space. Hang your weed trimmer from the studs of the wall and organize your gas, oil and weed killer containers to free up floor space.    While painting the inside of your shed probably doesn’t

make much sense, reinforcing it against the extreme hot and cold temperatures does. Add some standard insulation between the studs. Staple a plastic liner to the studs and enjoy a shed that’s cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter months.   Pre-fabricated sheds are more popular than ever. You can buy them with wraparound porches, large interior space and even lofts. With some insulation and a power source, they can even serve as guest houses.    You can make them look even better by adding landscaping around them to make them look like part of your yard. If your storage unit doesn’t come with a deck, build a 6-inch platform. Add mulched flower beds around the edges of the shed to serve as bright, beautiful borders.    The more you treat your shed like an extension of your home, the better it will look in your yard.

Plant now for beautiful garden in the spring Wait until the nighttime temp is from 40 to 50 degrees, however

Plant daffodils and other flowering bulbs now for their burst of color in the spring. (Courtesy photo)

Don’t pack away that shovel and trowel just yet. Fall is a great time to plant a few new things in the landscape. Here are just a few ideas for adding both immediate and long-term beauty to your garden.    Add cool-season annuals like pansies, snapdragons, ornamental kale and stocks to brighten the fall garden. Those in milder regions will enjoy them throughout the winter. Consider adding cold-hardy pansies. They provide color in the fall garden, survive most winters and are back blooming in the spring just as the snow melts.    Fall is also a good time to plant perennials, trees and shrubs. The soil is warm and the air cooler, so the plants are less stressed and establish more quickly. Select plants suited to the growing conditions and be sure to give them plenty of room to reach their mature size.    Plant trees so that the root flare, the place where the roots curve away from

the trunk, is even with the soil surface. Dig a hole the same depth as the rootball, and two to five times wider. Roughen the sides of the hole and backfill with the existing soil. Water thoroughly and spread a two- to three-inch layer of mulch over the soil surface, keeping the mulch away from the tree trunk.    Follow a similar planting procedure for shrubs. Plant these so that the crown, the place where the stems meet the roots, is even with the soil surface. And be sure to keep the mulch away from the stems.    Plant daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and other bulbs in fall for extra color next spring. Set the bulbs at a depth of two to three times their height. Then cover them with soil and sprinkle on a low-nitrogen

slow-release fertilizer like Milorganite (milorganite.com). This organic nitrogen fertilizer promotes rooting without stimulating fall growth subject to winter kill.    Start planting spring flowering bulbs after the nighttime temperatures hover between 40 and 50 degrees. Be patient — waiting until the soil cools reduces the risk of early sprouting that often occurs during a warm fall.    Those tired of battling the animals may want to plant resistant bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinths, Fritillaria, alliums, Camassia, glory-of-the snow, snow drops, squills and grape hyacinths. You may find it is easier to avoid the problem than battle the animals with repellents and scare tactics.

Much can be done for horticultural and visual enhancement even on a standard city lot. (Calvin Bratt/Lynden Tribune)

FALL HOME & GARDEN    Plant a few short-season vegetables in your garden for that fresh-from-thegarden flavor this fall. Simply count the days from planting to the average first fall frost to determine how many growing days are left in your area. Select vegetables that will mature and can be harvested in that amount of time. Leaf lettuce, spinach, mustard greens, radishes and carrots are fast-growing vegetables tolerant of cool weather that make great additions to the fall garden and your dinner plate.    Get these vegetables off to a good start with a side dressing of low-nitrogen fertilizer. Incorporate it into the soil prior to planting or sprinkle a narrow band along the row of plants. This organic nitrogen will provide needed nutrients without damaging the tender seedlings.    Extend the harvest season with the help of floating row covers. These fabrics allow air, light and water through while trapping the heat around the plants. No construction is needed; just loosely cover the plants with the fabric, secure the edges with pipes, boards or landscape staples and let the plants provide the support.    So be sure to get a jump on next spring’s garden season with a bit of fall planting now.    Melinda Myers is a gardening expert, author and columnist. It doesn’t take a brandnew house to create a brand-new home By Brent Lindquist news@ferndalerecord.com

My mom and dad, Randy and Vicki Lindquist, first purchased our home on

Hopewell Road outside Everson in 1993, with a remodel following in 2003.    I watched that remodel unfold as it happened, even helping put down some of the slate floors and stain the shakes, both of which were staples of the house after the project was finished. It wasn’t a before-and-after, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”-type reveal for me.    But I experienced such a reveal just a few short weeks ago. I knew my par-

ents were moving forward with an extensive remodel of the home in which I had spent most of my formative years, but, working in Ferndale rather than the east county now, I hadn’t stopped by to see any of the progress at any point.    It was the Saturday of that enormous windstorm that knocked the county effectively out of commission for a few days. The Ferndale Street Festival was canceled due to high winds, and an

attempt at walking around Berthusen Park was foiled by falling trees and increasingly dangerous and gusty wind.    My fiancé and I were already planning to stop by and see my folks, and we decided to keep that plan, even in the face of terrible weather.    I wasn’t really prepared for what I saw when I walked in.    It’s still the house I grew up in; there’s no doubt about that. But I guess

The new lighting is a distinct, unique feature. (Brent Lindquist/Ferndale Record) I didn’t really know the scope and scale of the remodel they were tackling. I figured the shower in the master bathroom would probably see completion, finally, and I knew there would be new wood floors, but the combination of it all was a shocker.    In short, the house is beautiful. Looking around, you can tell that my mom and dad are the ones who picked everything out. It’s their home, and still

my home just the same. And it’s perfect. I was very happy, walking around and taking it all in.    The first new feature I noticed was the floor. Much of the slate flooring installed in 2003 has been replaced with beautiful wood floors purchased from Ralph’s Floors in Lynden and installed by Craig Seutz of Whatcom Home Repair. I loved the slate, but there’s just something about wood floors that speaks to

FALL HOME & GARDEN me. And to my mom, who told me that the floors are her favorite addition to the house.   My personal favorite addition, however, is the dining room table. It’s a heavy-duty wood table with metal accents and some beautiful etching. It feels like something straight out of a Nordic lodge high in the Scandinavian mountains. A big stein of ale wouldn’t be out of place on this thing. Purchased from Wiser’s Furniture, it’s a piece of furniture I’d be excited to sit at each night for dinner.    The lighting is a very cool conversation piece, with some wonderful, big bar lights purchased from Leavenworth Boutiques brightening the kitchen bar. There’s a chandelier near the entryway purchased from Lowe’s, and a very cool, unique chandelier purchased via Houzz. com. Some of the bedroom lighting was also purchased via Houzz. My favorites of the bunch are the bar lights. The three bulbs are distinctly different in shape, but they all fall under the same styling. They complement each other perfectly, and the light they provide is warm and inviting. The bar also includes some snazzy painted stools from Pier One.    The countertops, purchased from and installed by Creative Stoneworks, are also new, giving the kitchen a great deal of character. The kitchen backsplash, purchased from Lowe’s and installed by Seutz, consists of stacked N

stone tile, and it also adds some more personality to the kitchen space.    The refrigerator, purchased from DeWaard & Bode, is another favorite of my mom. It’s counter-depth, and that makes a huge difference, she said, in opening up the space. The previous fridge jutted out a bit, making the space between the counter across from it and the fridge itself a bit smaller.    “The extra few inches we gained to the kitchen made a huge difference in opening things up,” my mom said.    The remodel includes a new kitchen sink from Creative Stoneworks and a new kitchen faucet from Lowe’s, with all the plumbing work done by Valley Plumbing & Electric. There’s also a corrugated metal ceiling in the laundry room, also installed by Seutz, and the living and dining rooms have been com-

pletely reconfigured. The family room is still laid out the same, but with new furniture from Macy’s.    In the end, I think the takeaway here is that a brand-new house isn’t necessary if you want a brand-new home. Remodels are a very viable way to take an existing space and make it into something completely new.    My parents’ house is a huge testament to that, and I seriously cannot wait to see what it’ll look like at Christmastime. If you know my mom, you understand why.    For my parents, the most difficult part was pulling up the slate, but the rest of the project went rather smoothly.    “A big thanks to Whatcom Home Repair,” my mom said. “It was no fun getting that slate out of the house and it was a good thing we had air conditioning

given the hot summer we had. We are enjoying the new reconfiguration and
