Examining the Investment Giant’s Dominance in the Market
By Anisha
Black rock manages 10trillion dollars worth of assets, an amount that surpasses the GDP of most nations. From Wall Street to Main Street, from renewable energy projects to tech startups, BlackRock is everywhere. With a portfolio so vast, it holds the power to sway markets, dictate corporate strategies, and even influence the very policies that govern nations. But how does one company, operating quietly behind the scenes, manage to control so much of the world’s wealth? The answer lies in BlackRock’s strategic mastery of capital, data, and political connections, positioning itself as not just a player in the financial world, but a hidden force steering the course of modern civilization.
Created in 1988, BlackRock gained its current power in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. With the fall of Lehman Brothers, Wall Street was in the throes of free-fall: no one knew what thousands of their financial portfolios contained, what was hidden behind the derivatives, what was toxic and what was not, what was dangerous and what wasn’t. BlackRock quickly understood how it could leverage the situation to their benefit
Since its creation, the firm developed Aladdin, a risk management tool capable of analyzing investment risks, tracking transactions, and providing vital information to investors. This cutting-edge software can analyze trillions of data points, assess risks, and predict market behavior with remarkable accuracy. Taking advantage of the 2008 financial crisis, BlackRock made Aladdin available to investors and financial regulators tasked with cleaning up the crisis. With Aladdin’s dominance, BlackRock didn’t just manage money—it began creating the rules of the game.
How Does BlackRock Shape the World?
BlackRock’s reach is staggering. It owns significant shares in nearly every major public company across various sectors—from tech giants to energy behemoths and airlines. Its investments often cut across competing firms, creating what some economists call “horizontal power.” This diversified ownership structure enables BlackRock to influence market dynamics, pricing strategies, and even corporate governance.
A 2016 study by economists José Azar and Martin Schmalz exposed the potential consequences of such common ownership. They discovered that companies in which BlackRock and its rivals, Vanguard and State Street, held significant stakes tended to compete less aggressively, often leading to higher prices for consumers. Critics argue that this undermines market competition and creates a quasi-monopoly over the global economy.
Beyond the corporate world, BlackRock’s influence extends to governments as well. For example during the 2008 crisis, the U.S. government entrusted the firm with managing toxic assets and assessing the health of failing banks like Citigroup and AIG. Across Europe, BlackRock has been deeply involved in shaping pension reforms, particularly in France and Germany, where it has pushed for privatized retirement savings plans. In the eyes of some this acts as a conflict of interest, with BlackRock standing to profit from the very policies it advocates. In 2020, The Federal Reserve, in an unprecedented move, entrusted BlackRock with the management of corporate bond purchases, bailing
out corporations drowning in debt during the COVID-19 pandemic. This move raised many eyebrows, as the corporations benefiting from BlackRock’s assistance were often the very ones in which the firm held significant stake in.
The Power of Connections
BlackRock’s ability to blur the lines between private capital and public policy has been viewed with concern. In Europe, for instance, the firm has collaborated with regulators to design new savings products, such as the Pan-European Personal Pension. Such collaborations grant BlackRock undue influence over policies that shape the financial futures of millions creating a whirlpool.
In Ukraine, BlackRock has taken on a prominent role in rebuilding the war-torn nation’s economy, partnering with President Zelensky to manage investments for reconstruction. While this partnership is heralded as a lifeline for Ukraine, it also reinforces the perception of BlackRock as a shadowy power broker operating at the intersection of capital and geopolitics.
The firm’s ability to negotiate favorable terms has given it a unique position of power. As BlackRock continues to leverage its extensive network of political and financial connections, its role in global geopolitics is becoming increasingly complex. The company’s intertwined relationship with governments, regulators, and international organizations raises important questions about the balance of power between the public and private sectors and whether such relationships benefit or exploit the public good. A Benevolent Giant or a Global Manipulator?
BlackRock’s CEO, Larry Fink, has framed the firm as a force for good, urging companies to focus on long-term sustainability and social
responsibility. In his annual letters to CEOs, Fink often emphasizes the importance of tackling climate change, fostering diversity, and prioritizing stakeholder interests over short-term profits.
Their lofty ideals mask the company’s self-interest some argue. BlackRock has been accused of greenwashing—promoting sustainability while continuing to invest heavily in fossil fuels. Its investments in competing companies and its ties to regulators have also sparked allegations of monopolistic practices and conflicts of interest.
Larry Fink, the man who transformed BlackRock into a financial juggernaut, is a force to be reckoned with. Whether he is a benevolent or malevolent figure in the world of finance is a matter of perspective. As BlackRock continues to shape the world economy from the shadows, its true impact on the global stage remains a complex and enigmatic puzzle. In the ever-evolving landscape of finance, the role of BlackRock, and the power wielded by Larry Fink, is a story that continues to unfold. The world watches with bated breath as this silent powerhouse continues to shape the economic destiny of nations.
Is blacrocks power a concern?
Is BlackRock merely a passive investor, as it claims, or is it actively shaping the world to suit its interests? The firm’s defenders argue that its vast portfolio reflects the choices of individual investors and pension funds, not a centralized agenda But their ability to sway markets, influence policies, and control the flow of global capital acts as evidence of something far more strategic.
As Bitcoin continues to dominate financial headlines, the question remains: is it truly a good investment, or just a volatile experiment in digital currency?
By Anastasija
Since its creation in 2009, when its price was just $0.0009, Bitcoin has experienced dramatic fluctuations. On November 21st, 2021, its value surged to an all-time high of $98,000, driven by events like the US election of Donald Trump. Its rise in popularity has prompted many professionals and investors to weigh though their opinions remain sharply divided. Some see Bitcoin as the investment of the future, while others, like Warren Buffett, dismiss it as a worthless gamble. In this article, we’ll explore both sides of the debate: what Bitcoin is, why it has gained popularity and value over the years, and whether it’s worth considering as an investment.
What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency that uses blockchain technology to enable secure and transparent transactions. A blockchain is essentially a decentralised system of ledgers, or financial records, distributed across a network of computers. This ensures that all transactions are visible to users, and
once a transaction is made, it cannot be altered or deleted. Advanced cryptographic techniques are employed to secure these transactions, ensuring that only authorised parties can access or modify the data.
Value and Volatility
Unlike traditional currencies, cryptocurrencies do not rely on a central authority, which means there is no central bank backing their value. Without any intrinsic value, Bitcoin derives its worth from other factors. The most important of these is its limited supply—there will only ever be 21 million Bitcoins, which makes it inherently scarce. Demand for Bitcoin has surged as more people adopt it for transactions, investment, and speculation, driving up its price.
However, Bitcoin’s lack of regulation and high volatility mean its price can fluctuate wildly, often due to speculation. Rapid price increases are typically driven by FOMO (fear of missing out), while panic selling during downturns only deepens the losses. News plays a significant role in Bitcoin‘s value, with government endorsements or policy shifts having a major impact. Trump announced many pro-crypto policy shifts and promised to make the US ‘the world’s crypto capital’. As a result, he replaced the SEC Chair Gary Gensler, who was skeptical about crypto and included a large number of pro-crypto lawmakers in Congress, among other things.
Due to Trump‘s victory,on November 21st, Bitcoin was nearing $100,000, with some experts predicting it could soon hit that milestone, while others warn it could lose all of its value in a flash.
Bitcoin‘s pseudonymous nature has made it a preferred tool for illegal transactions. While all transactions are recorded on a public ledger, the identities of users remain hidden behind cryptographic addresses. This anonymity has led to its use on the dark web for illegal activities such as drug sales, money laundering, and the trafficking of counterfeit goods. Services like mixers and tumblers obscure the origin of funds, making it difficult for law enforcement to trace illegal transactions. This has raised concerns about Bitcoin being used for tax evasion, financial crimes, and other illicit activities.
Should You Invest in Bitcoin?
Bitcoin offers scarcity with its fixed supply of 21 million coins, which gives it the potential for long-term appreciation as demand continues to grow. As more institutions and
individuals begin to trust Bitcoin, it is increasingly viewed as a store of value or a hedge against inflation, often being compared to „digital gold“, which redefines its initial purpose of simply being a speculative asset.
Companies may adopt Bitcoin for various reasons, such as diversifying their portfolios and protecting against the risks of traditional fiat currencies, especially in times of economic uncertainty. For instance, Tesla‘s decision to invest in and accept payments in Bitcoin reflects their belief in it as a legitimate financial asset, instead of a ‘speculative tool’.PayPal and Square are integrating Bitcoin into their payment systems, enabling customers to buy, sell, and use it for transactions.
The Bitcoin Lightning Network is a second-layer protocol built on top of the Bitcoin blockchain that allows for faster, cheaper, and more scalable transactions, increasing its popularity and accessibility. It works by creating off-chain payment channels between users, enabling them to conduct transactions instantly without waiting for the Bitcoin blockchain to confirm each one of them, and these are later collected and settled on the main blockchain.
For people in countries with unstable currencies, Bitcoin offers a decentralised, borderless asset that isn’t subject to government control, providing financial freedom in uncertain economic climates. As it isn‘t regulated by any government, it serves as protection against the domestic currency‘s inflation and devaluation. For example, in Venezuela many lost their belief in the bolívar, which keeps on losing value due to extreme hyperinflation, and in Argentina too, although hyperinflation is not as severe as in Venezuela, making it appealing to people to turn to other currencies which provide more stability and security, such as the US dollar or Bitcoin.
Criticism: Warren Buffett’s View Warren Buffett, one of the most respected investors of all time, has been a vocal critic of Bitcoin. ‘Now if you told me you own all of the Bitcoin in the world and you offered it to me for $25, I wouldn‘t take it because what would I do with it? I‘d have to sell it back to you one way or another’, he famously claimed. He dismisses it as a speculative asset with no inherent value, arguing that it lacks the tangible backing that makes traditional investments attractive. Assets that have practical, ongoing utility—such as farmland, which creates food and generates income, or apartments, on which rent is paid—are, according to him, considered valuable investments.
For Buffett, Bitcoin represents a “bubble,” where asset values rise far above their intrinsic worth due to speculation, hype, or overconfidence among investors. These prices aren’t backed by real value, such as earnings or utility, but solely by demand. This leads to a self-reinforcing cycle where more people buy, hoping to profit from further price increases, as others do the same. Such markets often collapse when price increases become unsustainable, and people begin to sell, causing values to plummet. This may be triggered by negative news, regulations, or overleveraging, with herd behavior worsening the crash. A notable example of a financial bubble is the Dot-Com bubble of the late 1990s, where technology stock prices soared unsustainably, driven by speculation about the internet’s potential. Many companies with little or no profits were valued at billions of dollars, but in 2000, the bubble burst, and numerous stocks collapsed in value.
Bitcoin’s volatility is one of the key concerns for critics. The price can fluctuate by thousands of dollars in a single day, making it a highly speculative asset. Moreover, the lack of regulation and the potential for future government crackdowns create additional uncertainty, and some countries have already imposed restrictions or bans on Bitcoin. Additionally, Bitcoin’s association with criminal activity and its environmental impact, due to energy-intensive mining processes, raise further red flags for many investors and regulators alike.
The Bottom Line
Bitcoin represents a unique and revolutionary asset class with incredible potential—but not without its risks. Its decentralised nature, limited supply, and growing institutional adoption suggest it could play a significant role in the future of finance. However, its volatility, regulatory uncertainty, and environmental concerns make it a highly speculative investment that requires careful consideration.
Whether Bitcoin is a worthwhile investment depends largely on your risk tolerance and financial goals. For those who are willing to navigate the wild fluctuations of this emerging market, Bitcoin could offer substantial rewards. However, as with any investment, it’s crucial to do thorough research, diversify your portfolio, and only invest what you’re prepared to lose. The debate over Bitcoin’s long-term value is ongoing, but it remains a compelling and controversial player in the evolving landscape of global finance. How sustainable is Bitcoin’s speculative increase in price, and how far has it gone from its intrinsic value – time will tell.

The Neuroscience of decision-making
By Amina
Introduction: The Neuroscience of DecisionMaking
From choosing what to wear in the morning to life-defining choices, our days are filled with countless decisions our brains must make. So, have you ever wondered how the complex process that occurs in your brain works? This article focuses on the science of decision-making and various factors that influence it. To understand that we also need to go a bit deeper and look at the mechanical impacts and functions of our brain.
The Brain’s Role in Decision-Making Let’s begin with the most complex part: the function of our brain. The primary region involved in decision-making is the prefrontal cortex, located at the front of the brain. It’s responsible for solving problems, planning, and making decisions by allowing us to think critically, evaluate different possibilities, and weigh the pros and cons of our choices. In addition, the prefrontal cortex can also take information from our long-term memory into account and is connected to our limbic system. The limbic system is where our emotions and motives originate from, and it analyses them to send signals to the prefrontal lobe.
Another crucial factor in decision-making is neurotransmitters—molecules that transmit impulses between neurons. They each have specific roles. For example, when you get a pleasant result or positive feedback, dopamine (reward and pleasure-linked neurotransmitters) is produced. Serotonin, on the other hand, is connected to our mood and social behaviour, so it plays a role in social decision-making.
We can’t always make optimal decisions based on the factors above, because our
environment and personal biases also have an influence on us. Environmental elements would include peer pressure: the presence of others, especially those we seek validation from, can strongly influence how we make choices. We often make decisions based on how we want to be perceived by others or what we believe will enhance our image. Another crucial factor is time restriction. When we’re faced with limited time, we often rely on heuristics—mental shortcuts that allow us to make quick judgments. While these shortcuts can be useful in some situations, they can also lead to poor decisions if we don’t have enough time to fully consider all the options.
Finally, personal biases can affect our decision-making. We seek confirmation on our already existing, but unsure opinions, while dismissing information that contradicts them. Additionally, when we base a choice too strongly on the first piece of information, we call it anchoring bias.
When talking about psychological variables, emotions play a key role. For instance, when one is scared or nervous, we tend to make cautious decisions, putting safety above taking risks. However, when we are feeling upbeat and enthusiastic, we tend to take our chances and risk it. Motivations also drive our choices. The desire for admiration or the need to avoid negative consequences can motivate us to make decisions that avoid potential mistakes or failures. Lastly, personality traits influence how we approach decisions. People with a higher level of openness tend to explore new opportunities, while people with a higher level of conscientiousness have higher priorities in responsibility and dependability.
Improving Decision-Making
To positively improve the way we make decisions, we should think about all the options we have and try to view outcomes for each of them. Then you can select the one that suits you best. Another crucial step is getting feedback from other people to get a fresh point of view and to take enough time during the decision process.
Conclusion
In conclusion, our decisions are influenced by three main factors: the brain, environmental and personal influences, and the decision-making process itself. Understanding how these elements shape our choices can give you deeper insight into your own decision-making habits. With this knowledge, you can make better choices the next time you face a difficult decision.
Let’s look back at the styles that ruled 2024: from the roaring comeback of leopard print to suede boots, this year’s trends made a bold statement in 2024
By Madel
Red, the new black?
This year red has proven once again to be the “it” colour. From cherry to wine, red is a shade that has demonstrated remarkable versatility and, like black, can be paired with neutral shades or used to add a pop of collar to a basic black outfit and give it personality. Valentino‘s striking monochromatic looks and Versace’s use of red, serving as a bold contrast against a more subdued palette have shown just how diverse this vibrant colour can be. Accessories have also embraced the trend, with red handbags, shoes and jewellery becoming must-have pieces.
If red is truly the new black, it’s because it offers all the versatility with an added spark of energy and individuality.
All about height let’s talk boots Boots have always been a statement piece in everyone’s closet, but this year they’ve taken on even more significance. They weren’t just about utility, they were about making a statement, whether it’s a cowboy boot or a suede boot they certainly made an impact.
Knee-high boots were particularly worn this year because of their versatility. We’ve seen them everywhere, either paired with an oversized sweater or in a more formal context paired with a sleek dress. Designers such as Chanel and Gucci brought the classic knee-high boots back to the forefront with bold new designs.
Alongside knee-high boots, biker boots have made a fierce comeback in 2024, proving that they’re not just for bikers! With their chunky soles and metal buckles they have a strong personality that’s hard to ignore. Miu Miu brought back the biker boot in 2022, and over the past two years, it has firmly established its place in the fashion world. They’ve been styled in unexpected ways, from a floral maxi dress to oversized blazers and leather pants for an urban aesthetic.
this year straight from the 2000s. The iconic pattern is reclaiming its throne appearing on everything, from bags to shoes, even on nails! Designer brands and fast fashion alike have embraced this trend, offering a wide range of pieces appealing to everyone and experimenting with different shades of the pattern. It’s no surprise that fewer people can resist to the allure of this print.
What makes it so appealing is its double-sided personality. It can serve as a playful detail in a casual outfit as well as add a subtle touch of colour to a simple elegant outfit.
The rise of long coats in men’s fashion Long coats aren’t just about fighting the cold; they’re also about making a statement. As we move through the winter season of 2024, they’ve become an essential component of man’s fashion, proving themselves as adaptable and dynamic. This year, designers have reintroduced the classic long coat with a fresh twist, blending the classic silhouettes with modern fabrics and innovative designs. Men have opted for a longer length, not just for warmth, seamlessly pairing them with everything, from casual streetwear to formal outfits. A well-chosen long coat elevates any outfit, adding an air of sophistication.

“Grandpa core”
In 2024, grandpa core has claimed the spotlight as one of the most unexpected yet endearing fashion trend. This nostalgic style embraces vintage staples such as knight cardigan, plaid blazers and corduroy trousers. Brands blended the retro charm with modern tailoring and high-quality fabrics to make it more appealing to the younger generation. Sweater vests, often paired with high-wasted curdoy trousers, prioritised comfort without compromising style. Accessories also played a vital role in this trend completing the whole aesthetic with knitted scarves, oversized glasses and patterned socks. Grandpa core has proven that sometimes looking forward can also mean looking back.
Fashion revival: was 2024 the new 2014? Looking back, 2024 was a year where fashion revisited 2014’s style, embracing the aesthetic of the Tumblr era. We saw the revival of fashion staples like Uggs and yoga pants, alongside vintage-inspired denim and chunky accessories that had dominated the early 2010s. This resurgence was heavily influenced by platforms like TikTok, which played a crucial role in bringing back these looks and making the ìm trendy. However, it wasn’t a direct repetition of 2014. Designers like Isabel Marant and Bottega Veneta elevated these nostalgic elements, emphasising sustainable fabrics and modern silhouettes. Marant embraced the boho-chic elements of 2014 with more refined silhouettes and Bottega incorporated minimalist designs with chunky accessories.
To sum up, 2024 has been a year of blending nostalgia with innovation. From the comeback of leopard print and chunky boots to the boho-chic aesthetic, this year’s fashion proved that old trends can always be reimagined with a modern twist, remaining relevant and fresh.
Big Techs are driving a nuclear revival to power their AI ambitions
Tech Giants Like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI Drive Resurgence in Nuclear Power to Meet Growing Energy Demands for AI and Cloud Computing
By Chengyu
Nuclear energy, after years of setbacks, appears to be experiencing a resurgence in the United States, and big tech companies are a driving force behind this trend. As Tech giants like OpenAI, Microsoft and Google are having an intense competition in taking the leadership in the AI revolution, their data centres are consuming more energy than ever.
Tremendous Energy Demand behind AI Tech companies are facing the pressure to find energy sources to power up their data centre used for modern Cloud-Computing and AI model training. Many developers rely on rented servers equipped with advanced graphics processing units from major cloud providers like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. These „hyperscalers“ offer an alternative to the prohibitively expensive cost of owning such infrastructure outright. The growing interest in generative AI tools, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has fuelled rapid expansion for these tech giants. However, this surge in demand has also resulted in a significant, often overlooked consequence: a sharp rise in energy consumption needed to support these innovations. A study published last year by researchers at the University of California, Riverside, sheds light on the hidden environmental cost of AI technology. The report revealed that ChatGPT, a popular generative AI tool, consumes approximately 500 millilitres of water for every 10 to 50 prompts it processes, depending on the time and location of deployment and there are more than 200 million people who are using ChatGPT
Revolutionising Web Searches: ChatGPT Combines Conversational AI with Real-Time Information Retrieval
By Chengyu
ChatGPT just got a major upgrade! Say goodbye to toggling between tabs—now you can get instant, up-to-date answers on sports scores, breaking news, stock updates, and more, all in one place. With lightning-fast web searches and relevant links, it’s like having the power of a search engine wrapped in a natural language interface. Stay informed,
every week, according to OpenAI in August. In the past two months, three major tech companies have signed agreements to expand nuclear energy generation. Among them, Microsoft made headlines with a 20-year deal with Constellation Energy to restart a reactor at Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island, the site of the United States’ most serious nuclear meltdown in 1979. The reactor’s reopening is slated for 2028, marking a significant step in the push for alternative energy sources.
The use of nuclear power is still controversial in environmental visions due to the catastrophic incidents that happened in history. Many climate activists strongly oppose these energy sources, pointing to their significant environmental and safety risks and arguing that they fail to qualify as a truly renewable form of power. Meanwhile, the proponents of nuclear energy, on the other hand, state that it offers a nearly carbon-free form of electricity and is more reliable than renewable sources like solar and wind. “If it is built and securitised in the right way, I do think nuclear
stay ahead, and save time—welcome to the smarter way to search!
A smarter way to search
Traditional search tools like Google and Bing often make it difficult to find useful information amid an overwhelming amount of content. Users frequently encounter „content farms,“ which are websites filled with keywords designed to attract search engine traffic but provide little valuable information. Now, empowered byChatGPT Search, you can ask questions in a natural tone, just like talking to a friend, and ChatGPT will search for you on the web and organise them into paragraphs. OpenAI also cooperates with specific data providers like such as Wolfram Alpha for computational and mathematical queries, and other specialised partners to ensure accurate, high-quality, and domain-specific information is available when needed.
Direct access to the source
ChatGPT can now give reference to sources, like online newspapers and blogs, giving you the chance to learn more about a specific topic.
is the future,” said Rosanne Kincaid-Smith, chief operating officer of Northern Data Group, a global data centre provider. She also added that “People fear nuclear power because of the disasters we’ve had in the past. But what’s coming, I just don’t see traditional grids being the sustainable power that’s on going in the development of AI.” Her comments highlight the potential role of nuclear energy in meeting the growing energy demands of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence.
In conclusion, the revival of nuclear energy driven by the massive energy demand of training AI models and cloud computing, highlights both the opportunities and challenges of balancing technological and environmental sustainability. Although nuclear energy provides a stable and efficient way to generate energy and help with the innovation of AI technology, it is still controversial for the historical disasters and the security risks. As Big Techs like OpenAI, Google and Microsoft are embracing the benefits brought by nuclear energy, a well-organised plan, sophisticated safety strategies and public awareness is vital for the resurgence of nuclear energy.

dings, accepting them without judgment. In today‘s high pressure academic atmosphere, students are stressed from all sides this includes academic demands, social commitments and career preparation. Therefore Mindfulness is an effective way to manage stress, increase focus, and improve mental well being and overall health. This is why these practices should be incorporated in students everyday life.
Setting intentions every morning
A morning ritual based on mindfulness sets a positive start to your day. Instead of rushing through breakfast or scrolling through social media, students could spend a minute setting a daily goal. This can be as simple as saying, „Today, I will try to remain calm even when under pressure,“ or „I will focus to do my best on my studies without overwhelming my self.“
A moment to set intentions can help provide mental clarity and allows students to tackle their day with a productive, focused mindset. Overall, this exercise encourages a positive attitude and brings students closer to improve their mental health.
Deep breathing helps to calm the mind
Stress frequently accumulates in the human body this can also appear as physical symptoms such as a fast heartbeat or shallow breathing. Mindful breathing exercises can help with these symptoms by calming the nervous system and lowering anxiety. For example the 4-7-8 method is a common breathing technique in which trainees inhale for four seconds, hold their breath for seven seconds, and then exhale gently for eight. This strategy can be used at any time, but is particularly effective before high pressure situations such as exams or presentations. Mindful breathing allows you to calm down, refocus and make deliberate decisions, which can benefit your academic and personal live.
Take Mindful Breaks throughout your day
Incorporating short „mindful moments“ into your day can help prevent stress from building up. Even if these moments only last a few seconds, it’s still enough time to stop, breathe and check in with oneself. Students can ask themselves questions like „How am I feeling?“ or „Am I tense or relaxed?“ Noticing these indications of stress allows one to address them before they get any worse. Regular check ins can also act as a reminder to stretch, stay hydrated, or go for a walk outside. By making taking breaks a habit, students are more likely to tackle activities with a fresh perspective rather than allowing stress to build.
Building Strong Connections Through Mindful Listening
Mindful listening necessitates paying full attention to the person speaking to you without anticipating a response or checking your phone. This can significantly improve relationships and may also help reduce stress. When children listen carefully, they become more empathic and engaged with others, which promotes trust and emotional support. Relationships with friends, family, and teachers may be-sources of support by listening thoughtfully these bonds strengthen. Taking time to completely engage with someone else‘s words can also help provide a pleasant break from ones-stress, restoring perspective and tranquilly.
Riding the Waves of Guilt and Redemption: How BoJack Horseman
By Irena
Reflects Our Cultural Hang-Ups Bojack Horseman“ is an American adult animated comedy-drama television series produced by Raphael Bob-Waksberg, which premiered on Netflix on August 2. This show tells the story of Bojack Horseman, who was a former 90s actor on the famous show „Horsing Around“ as well as follows the lives and issues of his friend; some of whom are anthropomorphic animals like him and some of whom are human. Bojack Horseman, the protagonist, goes through the misfortunes of life and the bad choices made in response to them.
In Bojack Horseman, sin represents self-destructive choices, moral failings and emotional damage caused by BoJack and other charac-
Embrace tackling one thing at a time above multitasking
In an efficiency driven society, many students juggle multiple activities at once, which can lead to exhaustion. According to research, multitasking highness stress levels and can even diminish ones productivity. Practice tackling one thing at the time and focussing singularly on that in-order to reduce stress and enhance your work quality. The so called “Pomodoro Technique” is a popular strategy designed to help acieving this goal, in which students try to work on a single task for 25 minutes and then take a five minute break. This strategy prevents mental exhaustion, maintains energy and emphasises a sense of accomplishment, ultimately reducing emotions to overload.
Journaling to Manage Ones Emotions and Track Progress at the same time
Writing in a journal is a thoughtful technique that allows one to express and process their feelings. Setting aside time each day to write down thoughts, can help students identify what is creating their stress, by doing so also being able to tackle uncomfortable feelings. Many individuals also find it beneficial to keep a thankfulness diary, in which one writes down three things they are grateful for every day. This practice switches your attention from stress to positive feelings and memories, which can help improve ones general mood and reduces anxiety.
ters as they flow through fame, addiction and personal issues.
The show has a significant cultural impact due to the fact that it manages to resonate to contemporary issues such as mental health, addiction, relationship and other darker sides of culture.
The Anatomy of Sin in Bojack Horseman
Each character in the show represents one of the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth.
1. Bojack Horseman - Greed
Bojack Horseman is an anthropomorphic horse as well as the main character of this television series. He is a washed-up 90s sitcom star battling with both alcohol and drug addiction, depression and insecurities.
He could easily be seen as greed due to his unstoppable pursuit for fame, validation and personal satisfaction in every situation. His greed isn‘t centred around wealth, instead, it is much more focused on the constant desire for attention. Attention, love and pleasure is what manages to fill the dark void inside of Bojack Horseman.
2. Diane Nguyen - Envy
Diane‘s journey is shaped by her constant feelings of inadequacy and comparing herself to other people. She feels jealous of those who already have everything figured out in life and who demonstrate a feeling of fulfilment and success that she herself finds difficult to attain.
Journaling also serves as a record of progress, allowing students to reflect on problems they‘ve overcome and track personal growth over time.
Finally, relax and reflect Mindfulness isn‘t just for getting through the day, it‘s also an effective strategy for relaxing at night. Setting aside a few minutes before going to bed to reflect on ones day allows-students to find closure and reduce their stress levels. This exercise could include mentally assessing one’s triumphs-throughout the day, making note of challenges and considering how to improve for tomorrow. There are different relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or brief meditation, both of these can help enhance sleep quality, which is a necessity for stress management. A good night‘s sleep allows students to recharge in-order to wake up refreshed and prepared to face the day‘s challenges.
To conclude my point, mindfulness is a practical and effective way for students to manage stress, build focus and emphasise mental resilience. These skills are essential not only for academic success but can help develop one into becoming a future leader. By integrating simple practices like mindful breathing, journaling, and intention setting into daily routines, students can better handle life’s challenges with patience, empathy, and clarity. Mindfulness equips students with the mental tools needed to remain calm under pressure, make thoughtful decisions and lead with purpose skills that will serve them well in any field they want to pursue.
As our school motto says, “Mens sana in corpore sano a healthy mind in a healthy body”, cultivates and states that practicing mindfulness can contribute to balance oneself and emotions. By caring for both mind and body, students can create a foundation of strength, resilience, and well being that will support them now and in their future adventures.
In her personal life, she struggles with feelings of being overshadowed or not making enough impact on other people.
3. Princess Carolyn - Pride
Her pride is evident in her strong commitment to her career and her relentless need to prove as well as demonstrated herself as the best in her field. She in some way equates her personal worth with success in her career
However, her pride becomes a double-edged sword; while it helps to drive her ambition and resilience it also isolates her and makes it difficult for her prioritiser her own happiness in life.
4. Todd Chavez - Sloth
Todd is creative and full of energy but his lack of focus and avoiding obligation are significant signs of sloth. In order to avoid dealing with the more serious aspects of adulthood, he frequently engages in ridiculous behaviour as he flows through life.
5. Mr. Peanutbutter - Lust
Through this character‘s ubiquitous seeking of shallow relationships and the temporary high that sex provides without any further introspection, everything Mr Peanutbutter represents is lust personified. His succession of marriages and heavy-duty hopping of partners only points out his proclivity for leaping after the thrill of new love, as opposed to forming genuine connections of the heart. This just shows a certain emotional immaturity on his part, that he thinks that infatuation and lust equate with real commitment. Charming, pleasant enough but otherwise he‘d be a lovely guy that we need to avoid at all costs and who is hiding a too simple avoidance of real reflection behind his friendly mask so in essence he is also the temptation of childish pleasure over transcendence.
6. Sarah Lynn - Gluttony
Her gluttony is her last attempt to fill her emptiness and get rid of the pain she feels within herself. Unfortunately, she did not have a „regular childhood“ due to the fact that she was a child star, which later in the future made her turn to drugs, sex and excess for comfort. Her whole entire life turned into a warning about the negative effect of unrestricted and gluttonous indulgence. Even though Sarah Lynn has achieved the height of her fame, she still feels empty and unfulfilled.
7. Hollyhock - Wrath
She is fuelled by her quest for identity and the betrayal she experiences, particularly from Bojack, Hollyhock‘s angeles is subtle yet powerful.
Initially, Hollyhosh is an energetic and curious teenagers looking for her biological mother. However, her rage begins to increase as she finds out increasingly about Bojack‘s troubled past and the harm he has done to himself as well as others.
Cultural Reflection & Resonance
The contemporary relevance of BoJack Horseman, with its allegory on guilt and atonement and the societal impact of fame, strikes to the heart as it navigates the world events around bad behaviour, broken families, and self indulgence. At a moment when every transgression lives forever on social media, and when the so-called cancel culture frequently does more harm than good, BoJack getting lost in an endless string of regrets is hauntingly timely. This infatuation with and aversion to the past is indicative of a greater fear: being haunted by sins. The show gently probes themes of responsibility and self-abandon, all too familiar to those audiences who fear that if they fall short in some way —as individuals and as members of society- they will be obliterated by merciless judgement. And it raises the pressing question of whether true forgiveness is possible in a culture that forgets nothing.

increasing every year. Moreover, the percentage of students reporting feelings of overwhelming stress is even higher, with academic pressure being the leading cause of this numbing level of stress. Social dynamics further complicate these challenges, but strong familial bonds significantly enhance a young person’s ability to cope effectively. Combating these issues requires promoting open dialogue about mental health, much like initiatives such as Robbie Williams’ exhibit Pride and Self-Prejudice at the Moco Museum in Amsterdam aim to destigmatize emotional struggles. Schools and society as a whole share the responsibility for supporting young people by integrating mindfulness practices into education and providing accessible, comprehensive coaching and counselling services, just like we provide medical first aid and care.
2. How can students balance their academic and personal lives?
Students can achieve balance by setting small, daily realistic goals, creating a structured schedule each week that includes downtime, and prioritising self-care. Learning to say no to excessive commitments and practicing not time management but use of time is crucial.
3. What warning signs should teachers and peers look for to identify someone struggling with mental health issues?
Warning signs include changes in behaviour, withdrawal from activities they used to like and enjoy doing in school or outside of school. Withdrawal from social interactions, declining academic performance, frequent mood swings, excessive fatigue, or expressions of hopelessness. Addressing concerns with empathy, asking the student „hey, I‘ve observed that you are less cheerful and engaged lately. Is everything ok?“ is essential
4. What stigma still exists around mental health, and how can students help break it?
Stigmas often involve perceptions of weakness or fear of judgment. Staff, parents, students, and society can help break stigma by openly discussing mental health, supporting peers without judgment, and advocating for normalising therapy and self-help. I mean, no one would call it a weakness, if someone gets help with a broken leg.
5. How can parents best support their children‘s mental health at home?
Parents can provide a safe, non-judgmental space for open communication, actively listen to their children’s concerns, set realistic expectations, and model healthy coping mechanisms. This could be, seeing a counsellor if stress at work gets too much, or getting help to deal with the death of a loved one.
6. How do you suggest students approach seeking help if they are struggling?
Students should start by talking to a friend who might know more and then finding a trusted adult, such as a parent, teacher, or counsellor. Drafting an email or giving a trusted person a written note can be a first step to get help and find out more about mental health resources.
7. How can students cultivate a positive mindset amid challenges?
David Goggins talks about this great strategy of having a cookie jar. You just need an empty glass of jam with a lid and paper. Write every achievement on a little piece of paper and put it into the jar. Things like „I‘ve managed to do that difficult presentation in 4th grade“ or it could be „I‘ve managed to pass my drivers licence“, or ride a bike, say sorry to my best friend, cook for dad on his birthday, write a book, run 5k or win a music competition... anything, that felt too difficult at some point and then you did it anyway.
8. What impact does peer pressure have on mental health, and how can students handle it?
Peer pressure can lead to anxiety, low self-esteem, and poor decision-making. The best way to handle it is to understand that hurt people hurt people. And something really important is to understand, that you are allowed to seek out people who are supportive and confident.
9. Do you think mental health education should be a part of the curriculum? Why or why not?
Yes, mental health education is crucial to equip students with tools to recognise and manage their emotions and seek help when needed. In Europe, around 60% of people report experiencing excessive stress, and each year, millions of adults become unable to work due to stress and burnout. Therefore, learning early on in life how to breakout of the stress cycle, is really important.
10. What are some small but impactful daily habits that can improve mental health?
The first thing I do in the morning is going outside for a run. Engaging in physical activity has a great and reliable effect on energy and stress levels, mood and physical health. Other strategies are maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, staying hydrated, Vitamin D, Omega-3, Magnesium and a diet rich in leafy greens is great for and healthy gut and short chain fatty acid production. Finally spending time with supportive people can also be immensely powerful for mental well-being.
