Lyceum Balance

In the past months, the students were again offered a very varied and exciting “Lyceum Balance” programme for their Wednesday afternoon activities. These included many sporting courses such as volleyball, badminton, cricket, basketball, crossfit training – but also creative activities such as pottery, film acting, graphic design. There was also a choice of strategic or academic workshops (Chess, TwixT, Entrepreneurship). The children definitely had fun, as the following reports and photos prove.

HORSE RIDING

“What better, more peaceful, more relaxing way is there to see the beautiful Engadine valley, than on horseback? The calm but strong American quarter horses of the River Ranch in Madulain are the perfect breed for the rugged terrain of the Alps. A unique way to get outdoors and connect with nature!”

PASSION FOR POTTERY

Modelling clay, eating from handmade plates, links us to the earth and to our roots. Peaceful and comforting experiences. Very little has changed in the way people creates objects from clay, working the shapeless material into beautiful and durable objects.

leable material, kneading it for hours with rhythmic and repetitive movements, transmitting their strength and heat, until it reaches the ideal plasticity.

Feeling its texture, its firmness and its degree of humidity allows us to get to know the material.

Ceramics is the art of the earth, but also of fire: a prerequisite for making lasting objects. Long hours in the kiln transform the properties of the clay and give it its character, with often unpredictable results. An activity that enlightens our hearts, pacifies our minds and reflects our great creative potential.

ACROBATICS

This activity transforms the Sport halls into a skills park. It is an area for the free expression of any type of movement while using the available equipment. An AIRTRACK (inflatable mattress 2x10 m), which allows you to perform acrobatics even on a rather soft floor. Throughout the gym, we could find three SLACKLINES (lines pulled from one pole to another) of various heights to practice balance. A large TRAMPOLINE, built like a large arena with protective mats for safety measures. Finally, we have single-wheel bicycles, pedalòs, and minitramp available to create new movements and have fun.

DANCING

Our dancing group consists of eight girls, including our talented dance teacher Veronica and her also very talented assistant Nini. Every Wednesday we meet in the CU fitness room and practise

jazz dance. First we warm up, stretch and afterwards we work on a dance routine that Veronica has prepared for us. We all are trying our best and we’re having a lot of fun.

KYOKUSHIN KARATE

Over the course of these four Lyceum Balance Wednesdays, Mr. Maxwell has taught us the very basics of “Kyokushin” and selfdefence, including a few basic punches and kicks, and even the first of the kata required for the 10th kyu exam. We learned about the Japanese tradition of bowing before and after training, to show our respect to both our teacher but also our classmates. We have felt the power of discipline and became more dedicated to the way of our self-improvement. Karate is not a pure physical martial art, but as with most arts, there is a meditative and psychological side to it. It was a great course and I would definitely do it again if I had the chance.
