A welcome from our Head of the Infant and Junior School At the Infant and Junior School, we believe in a childhood that prepares them to thrive - not just for the next stage of education, but for life. Welcome to our Infant and Junior School LVS Ascot’s Infant and Junior School shares the same beautiful campus as our Senior School and Sixth Form, while enjoying its own secure and welcoming area of the grounds. We believe childhood should be a time to explore, discover, build friendships and develop a love of learning. The Infant and Junior School Diploma The Infant and Junior School Diploma is our framework for recognising and celebrating the learning, experiences and personal development that take place both inside and beyond the classroom. Children build a portfolio of evidence that shows how they are becoming independent, thoughtful and responsible learners, applying their knowledge and skills to real-life experiences and taking increasing ownership of their learning. Reception Starting school for the first time hails a significant milestone for any family. It seems that as soon as they turn four, children start to talk about going to ‘big school’ and what they will do when they get there. Our main aim in the Reception Class is to ensure your child has a happy and enjoyable start to their school life. Reception Curriculum

There is a fully qualified teacher and full-time teaching assistant in the Reception Class. They will seek to engage and support you and / or carers in guiding your child’s development at home. If appropriate, they will also help your family engage with more specialist support.
Our staff are experienced, well qualified and understand the importance of a child centred approach to learning. Our engaging and stimulating cross curricula environment ensures all children can thrive. We put the children’s interests at the heart of our planning; Encouraging independence and risk taking. We encourage our children to be active learners, to take risks and develop critical thinking. We place a strong emphasis on literacy, through our Sounds-Write phonics programme and Talk4Writing to The Drawing Club.
At the IJS, our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum follows the statutory national framework, giving children a joyful, secure and ambitious start to school life. Years 1 & 2 As children move from the Early Years into Key Stage 1, we aim to build upon the skills learned in Reception and we encourage them to strive consistently, to achieve beyond their own expectations in academic, sporting and co-curricular activities. The majority of the foundation subjects are taught through our themed learning approach to the curriculum. Years 3 & 4 Years 3 & 4 is when we work with pupils to build on previously learned skills, creating opportunities for the children to become increasingly independent and confident learners. Our children benefit from Spanish taught by a primary qualified language teacher and PE taught by subject specialists. This is an enquiry-based method of learning and ensures that all the subjects link together to allow for contextual learning to take place. Children are increasingly encouraged to take greater responsibility for their own possessions as they progress through Key Stage 2, both within the classroom and also by ensuring that they have the correct kit for their PE lessons.
Across our Infant & Junior School, children take part in a number of off-site trips and each year a range of visitors come to share their knowledge. The children enjoy being out on a school trip and use these experiences to develop and extend their understanding in future lessons. LVS Ascot Infant & Junior School
Pupils in Year 5 and 6 also undertake independent learning projects known in school as TED projects. This stands for Think, Explore, Discover and teaches the children time and project management skills as well as public speaking and presenting skills. As our Year 5 children transition into Year 6, they can take on positions of responsibility in the Infant & Junior School such as Head of School or Head of House. As they mature and grow in confidence, they are encouraged to take greater responsibility for themselves, their learning and personal organisation. Throughout Year 6, our staff support and prepare them for the move into Senior School. Helping to ensure they feel confident, prepared and excited about the next stage of their LVS Ascot journey. Learning Environment Years 5 and 6 are able to make full use of the superb, specialist subject facilities in the Senior School including the eSports Lab, theatre and music department, swimming pool, Astro and the LRC, in addition to the Infant & Junior School vegetable and environmental gardens, which facilitate hands-on learning in Science and other curriculum areas. Our Upper Key Stage 2 children take part in a number of off-site trips each year, this culminates in week long residential trips to reinforce the Round Square IDEALS and Discoveries in the summer term. They also take part in charity fundraising activities and sponsored events.
Boarding LVS Ascot boasts four fabulous modern and comfortable boarding houses, each named after a royal palace: Kew, Blenheim, Hampton and Osborne, and celebrates our close links with our royal patronage that we have been afforded for over 200 years. Hampton (boys) and Osborne (girls) are home to students from the ages of 9 to 16 (Years 5 to 11). Both houses have a Housemaster / Mistress, a Senior House Assistant and a Graduate Boarding Assistant. Non-resident tutors are also attached to each house, providing a home-from-home in bright and airy living accommodation, each with its unique characteristics that the students help to develop in their house. The benefits of boarding are unbounding, not least for academic achievement. Boarding students have academic staff available to them in the evenings during prep sessions / homework, and there is a plethora of cocurricular activities in the evenings and at the weekends. Having the run of the school after hours gives students the chance to exploit our facilities, as well as saving on time travelling to and from school.
Being located close to London, Windsor and Reading, our weekend activities embrace English culture, as well as the not so cultural activities of shopping trips, theme parks and other days out and events. For international students, our location is only 20 minutes from Heathrow airport.

Arriving at School There is a stop and drop station just inside the school gates near the Infant and Junior School. This is staffed every morning by two members of the Infant and Junior School team. We encourage all Reception to Year 4 parents to use this zone to drop off between 8.20 and 8.40am. There are a number of buses which serve the school and are exclusively for the use of LVS Ascot students. For more information, please contact the Infant and Junior School Reception. If your child has any medical / orthodontic or other appointments which necessitate time off school, please use the parent portal to make a leave request or email the class teacher and Infant and Junior School Reception. This does not require prior authorisation from the Headteacher. Wraparound Care Our Reception class finish their school day at 3:30pm, whilst Years 1-6 finish at 4pm. All Infant & Junior School pupils can stay with us until 5.30pm free of charge.

Alternatively, pupils can stay with us until 6:15pm and they will be taken to have supper with our boarding community in the dining hall. This will incur a small fee. In Extended Day Infant and Junior children get the opportunity to play in a less formal environment, but they are still fully supervised. They also have the chance to complete any homework they may have. Security The front door of the Infant and Junior School building operates on a buzzer entry system. If you arrive after the start of the day, please access the building via the main school door and report directly to the Receptionist, who will sign your child in on the register. If your child is to be collected by another family member or friend, then school must be informed either in a note or via email juniorreception@lvs.ascot.sch.uk After 5:30pm, parents and students must not re-enter the school building through any entrance unless accompanied by a member of staff. Reception is open until 5.30pm.
Medical Matters When your child joins the school, you will be asked to confirm, in writing, any food allergies, dietary requirements and medical conditions your child may have. It is most important that the staff caring for your child are fully aware of any problems so they can deal with incidents in the best possible way. Please take all medications directly to the Nurses in the Health and Wellbeing Centre. Please ensure that you update your contact details with the school if any changes occur. This can be done through the Parent Portal. It is essential that we are able to contact you quickly in the event of illness during the school day. All boarding students come under the National Health Scheme and the School Doctor visits weekly. Food and Drink All students are given a healthy, well-balanced school lunch. The choice of food is superb and we are able to cater for all dietary requirements. Children who are staying for an after-school club may bring in an additional healthy snack to eat at 4pm. These must be completely nut-free, simple and quick to eat. All children must bring in a clearlylabelled water bottle for use during the day. School Equipment To ensure your child gets the very best from their time in school, please send them in with the equipment listed below. Children in Years 3-6 • Pencil case containing: - HB pencils - A rigid, clear 30cm ruler - Set of coloured pencils - Set of coloured felt tips (in a separate pencil case)
All children in Year 3 upwards will need a their own device and headphones in a named bag. We ask that the children charge them each evening. All students will require an LVS branded School bag, these vary depending on the age of the child. Please ensure that everything is labelled clearly with their name. Possessions The following items are not allowed in school: • Toys • Trading cards • Mobile telephones (in Years 5 and 6 ONLY. These must
be put into a Yondr pouch, purchased from school and handed into reception until they can be unlocked at the end of the day) • Chewing gum • Radios, ipods etc • Money • Sweets • Smart watches • Wearable technology includes SMART glasses. • Jewellery* * Please note that students should not wear earrings of any description during the normal school day. Watches may be worn, but should be clearly marked with the initials of their owner. Jewellery worn for religious observance reasons is permitted.
Absence from School or Specific Cultural Reasons If your child is absent for whatever reason, please submit a leave request through the Parent Portal (under the My Children tab) including a short explanation of the situation for each day that they are absent. That notification is automatically sent to our administration team and your child’s class teacher.

General Information School Uniform Your child is now part of our community and we want him/her to take pride in their appearance. Please adhere to the uniform policy at all times. A full list of uniform requirements for each year group (plus an online ordering facility) is available on the school uniform provider website: www.schoolblazer.com As we all know, school uniform does have a habit of getting lost! Please help us to reunite uniform with its rightful owner by clearly labelling all your child’s belongings. If hair is longer than collar length it should be tied back (black or navy blue hair bands/scrunchies only). Round Square We are a Round Square school. Pastoral Care All staff at LVS Ascot are concerned with the emotional, personal and social development of your child as well as their educational progress. We address this in a variety of ways: • Regular ‘reflection times’ when we listen to each other’s

World Class School Sport We are an extremely inclusive school, and we like to see as many pupils as possible taking part in practices and fixtures. We also have partnerships with Southampton FC and Reading FC that deliver a first class football programme.
Performing Arts Alongside our permanent Performing Arts staff, we offer specialist one-to-one tuition with experienced teachers, including preparation for LAMDA and graded music examinations. Students can take part in a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities, including Dance, Drama, Music and Musical Theatre clubs, as well as our programme of school productions and performances. Bus Routes LVS Ascot have appointed Vectare, a specialist school transport management company, to manage the school bus services. Vectare are responsible for over 2.5 million independent school journeys a year. Vectare will manage all aspects of the school’s service, and any enquiries can be directed to their team via the ‘Contact Us’ form on the booking website.
