SPORTS

Athletics have long been a part of Luther College High School’s tradition. Luther’s athletic teams and individual athletes, called Luther Lions, demonstrate passion and determination, helping to build Lion pride. Student involvement in athletics promotes not only physical health and team spirit, but also cooperation, communication, sportsmanship and time management.

Game schedules for most of Luther’s athletics teams can be found on the school event calendar or on the Regina High School Athletics Association’s (RHSAA) website.

1

BADMINTON

Tryouts begin in late February with approximately 20 - 25 students of both genders comprising the official squad. Open gym time is offered at least once a week to any badminton players, whether they are on the team or not. Several minimeets occur each week, giving players a chance to compete in a tournament format against two or three schools before the city championship which usually occurs on the last Saturday in April. Players who win gold or silver at cities advance to regionals and even to provincials.

CURLING

The overall philosophy is to have fun, but at the same time we encourage skills and strategy development. We also work on the development of interpersonal skills such as working together cooperatively and following through on commitment. As a result, all students are expected to attend all practices and games. The curling season runs from mid-November to the beginning of February.

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING

BASKETBALL

The basketball teams are comprised of senior and junior girls and senior and junior boys teams. The roster is usually comprised of 12 to 15 players. They play two to three times per week and practice on non-game days during the week. Teams will participate in conference play against other large schools as determined by the RHSAA. The basketball start date is often the middle of November, with the season ending in the middle of March. The schedule is complimented by tournaments, both in town and out of town, dependent on the team.

Calling all runners! The cross country season kicks off on the first day of school each year. It is important that all interested students see the coaches as soon as possible in order to register as members of the Luther College cross country team. We need a minimum of four boys and four girls from each grade to fill our roster. We run non-competitively several times a week; with the goal of strengthening bodies and minds with aerobic, power and endurance training. We represent Luther competitively each week at Douglas Park. Our season goes from the first day of school in the fall until the middle of October. Previous training is an asset but not necessary. All interested students are encouraged to participate.

LUTHER CO-CURRICULAR 2

FOOTBALL

The Lions compete in the Regina Intercollegiate 12-player football league as a part of the Stewart (5A) Conference. For almost a century, the Lions have been playing this wonderful sport. Practices begin the last week in August and continue every school day. The regular season goes until late October. City and provincial playoffs continue until early November. We also have a spring camp with five practices in May and June. We have a no-cut policy and all students are eligible to play provided they meet SHSAA guidelines and have the permission of a parent or guardian.

GOLF

Every year, Luther College High School fields a competitive golf team to participate in a series of tournaments. LCHS also offers a developmental program for students who wish to learn the game. Competitive golfers play in four tournaments during May and in the city championship in early June. To play competitive high school golf, players should have experience on a championship-length golf course. Developing golfers meet weekly in May to learn golf skills, rules, and course etiquette. Luther golf is co-ed and open to all grades.

POM TEAM

The POM team is a blend of gymnastics, dance and traditional cheerleading. The team performs and competes at various events and competitions. The season begins with tryouts in September. Practices begin in late October and continue until mid to late March, with competitions and performances many weekends in February and March.

SOCCER

Approximately 40 Luther College High School students from grades 9 to 12 participate in the soccer program each year. Many dorm students participate in our soccer program. Our goals are to become a strong team and have fun by playing with energy and grit, improve our skills, build strong team spirit and develop new friendships.

3

TRACK & FIELD

Track & Field is a co-ed team sport of individual athletes. It is a beautiful sport of personal bests where the true spirit is captured by improving previous performance(s). In the high school athletic scene it makes this sport unique. You are expected to show desire, commitment and effort. In exchange, we expect you to have high expectations of your coaches. It is our job to develop the programming and teach you the skills necessary to get the most out of this short season. It is our job to help you through workouts and competitions. Spread the word, a track team grows strong one athlete at a time.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE

Ultimate Frisbee is a highly energetic, spirited and co-ed competitive sport. Pre-season tryouts and practices take place indoors immediately following basketball season in April/May. The six week season occurs from May to June and finishes prior to final exams. Teams will be formed between the experienced and non-experienced players dependent on age and skill level. League games are scheduled once per week, and additional practices may be held at the coaches’ discretion. In addition to regular play, there are two in-town one day tournaments

Ultimate Frisbee is not an RHSAA sanctioned sport, however, it is run in collaboration with RUFDC (Regina Ultimate Flying Disc Club). Come on out, have fun, and bring your friends!

VOLLEYBALL

The volleyball teams enjoy a busy and exciting season Tryouts begin the first day of school and run for three days We usually carry 12 to 15 players on the team who play one or two games per week and practice on most non-game days. The volleyball season consists of regular season and playoff games. Teams participate in a few tournaments, which usually include one out-of-town tournament, and our senior girls also host our very own Luther Invitational Volleyball Tournament (LIVT) in September.

HOCKEY

The Luther Lions hockey program offers students an excellent opportunity to participate in a fun, yet competitive, co-curricular program sanctioned by the RHSAA. Both female and male students are on the roster. In past years, the hockey team has traveled to places such as North Dakota, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg to play exhibition games and to attend professional hockey games. All games are from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. throughout the season.

How did Luther’s sports and academics prepare you for university and a career? Being involved in sports introduced me to a lot of people who would become lifelong friends. Being on the same team connects you to other people through so many unique and challenging ways. It really allows for bonds to be created with people who you might have never otherwise met. Sports at Luther really taught me about community, respect, and being a good teammate.

No one was bigger than the team, and we were successful in my senior year at Luther because everyone understood and respected each other’s roles. I could rely on my friends in tough times on the field and off the field which really gave us a close-knit sense of community and respect. These have carried on throughout my college and professional career.

Luther College has a long and proud tradition of athletics and I still carry with me. I am forever grateful for the teachers and volunteers who spent so much time with me and my friends on our teams during my high school years. The Luther experience was the foundation of who I am today as a professional athlete. From the tough football practices on the grass field across from the school (and the countless laps around the blocks!) to the old Luther gym and the history that building holds, I wouldn’t change my Luther College High School experience for anything.

Melanie and Molly Thomas

Molly Melanie

• Class of 2005

• Education: Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, Luther College at the University of Regina, Masters of Global Affairs, University of Toronto

• Career: Award winning news correspondent, anchor and producer

• Personal Life: Loves chicken wings - any day, any time!

• Class of 2007

• Education: Juris Doctor, Osgoode Hall Law School; Honours of Business Administration, Ivey Business School at Western University

• Career: Private Practice, Banking, Philanthropy

• Personal Life: I love adventure - my greatest stories come from saying yes to an unexpected invitation to visit a new place or meet a new person

used to get butterflies in my stomach during warm up. I still get that feeling when I play pick up.

Molly: I work as an Investigative Correspondent for CTV’s W5. I also backfill as a national TV anchor for several shows. In my spare time, I emcee a variety of charity events, teach Zumba, love to dance salsa and bachata, and am always down for a competitive game of basketball or volleyball.

Melanie: I am currently Vice President for Community Foundations of Canada, a pan-Canadian network of philanthropic foundations. With my job, I travel to Canada’s largest cities and smallest towns. I also try and combine my work travels with my downtime, which helps because my Luther classmates are all over Canada! When I’m home, I prioritize spending time with my inner circle, eating incredible food and dancing hip hop and salsa.

What sports did you participate in at Luther College?

Molly: Basketball, volleyball, track and field, cheerleading, badminton.

Melanie: Basketball, volleyball, track and field.

How did Luther’s sports and academics prepare you for university and a career?

Molly: Luther taught me how to manage an extremely demanding schedule between school, sports, music, and friendships. Not much has changed in 17 years; I have a hectic travel schedule, jet setting to different cities and countries for my job, but I also prioritize time for fun activities and friendships. Even at this age, I

crave a healthy and fit lifestyle and that started with routines around team sports.

Melanie: Playing sports taught me how to train. Training is hard, it burns, it’s exhausting and it takes a while before you notice improvement. The mental fortitude that I learned from playing sports in high school has stuck with me. Getting through business and law school, at times, felt like a marathon and I relied on the notion of ‘training’ to get me through. With my background in team sports, I never wanted to do it alone. I regularly booked the group study rooms. In my current job, when I face challenges, I tell myself this is ‘training for the next thing’ and it allows me to push through.

What was the best part of participating in sports at Luther and why?

Molly & Melanie: Luther sports taught us how valuable teamwork is in every arena of life. You also learn how to win and lose gracefully and pick yourself up after a hard loss. In our opinion, grit, and the ability to bounce back from failure or a loss is one of the greatest skills you can learn at a young age.

What is your favourite Luther sport memory?

Molly: I used to love the lead up to a high school basketball game. The sound of the crowd filling up the bleachers, the laughs in the locker room while you lace up your sneakers, your favourite tunes blasting in the gym as you walk towards the court. I

Melanie: The ecstatic feeling of the whole school behind you and working as a unit with your teammates on each set - absolutely incredible!

Do you have a message to share about your extracurricular involvement at Luther College?

Molly: Being involved in sports and extracurricular projects prepares you to learn from all kinds of people while making lifelong memories. While I love my work, it’s not my whole life. What makes it full is the people and experiences you are open to along the journey.

Melanie: Savour the moments to be part of a team. High school is also a wonderful place to get involved, push and allow yourself to be bad at something and in the process, you

might find something that you love. Take time to make deep, genuine friendships. They truly can last a lifetime.
