If you are at all considering Luther College… DO IT! Luther has helped me in my academic and personal goals, and it has been an incredible experience. Class sizes were small enough that you really got to know the professors one-on-one and create great connections for the future. These professors were very knowledgeable, incredibly kind, and helpful, and it made that scary first year of university so much better. Luther advisors have helped me with class planning and ensuring that I graduate with all the courses I need on my schedule. Their support was excellent and invaluable. Lastly, the Luther scholarship program has been incredible and truly helped fund my university degree. Without Luther, I would not be the person I am today.”

“I enroled in the Forensic Psychology Certificate out of pure curiosity, but it quickly became one of the most enriching parts of my degree. It’s a great way for psychology majors to earn an additional credential while completing their program. It pushes you to apply concepts in unexpected ways, like understanding how one’s background and upbringing can help develop resources to reduce recidivism. It provides the opportunity to branch out and explore how psychology intersects with the criminal justice system, all under the guidance of passionate professors like Dr. Kaila Bruer.”

“I took STAT 200 with Dr. Agasthian in my second year of my program, and it quickly became one of my most enjoyable courses. Her way of teaching was so clear and thoughtful, and she always took the time to make sure her students felt supported. As a psychology student, I appreciated how she made a challenging subject feel approachable and how her mentorship inspired me to push beyond my limits and believe in my potential. The foundation I built in that class now plays a key role in the research and advocacy I am involved in today.”

Elder-in-Residence: Dr. Elder Lorna Standingready

Elder Lorna’s traditional Cree name, “Noo-Ta-Ka-A-Pay-Taht-Mee-Ooo-Mus-Ki-Ki,” means “old woman who brings good medicine” and indeed, she does. Elder Lorna is from Treaty 4 territory and is a 10-year Indian residential school survivor who has dedicated herself to serving her community. She recently received an Honourary Doctorate, in recognition of her lifetime commitment working towards reconciliation by walking together.

As Luther’s Elder-in-Residence, Elder Lorna provides wisdom, teachings, and guidance to students of all backgrounds. She assists in all programming to further decolonize all the University’s work and help with Luther’s commitment to reconciliation. Through a variety of Indigenous initiatives, she teaches us about: principles guiding human behaviour towards others; the residential school system and the people and families who were, and still are, affected by this system; missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people, raising awareness and telling the stories. Elder Lorna’s stories demonstrate the power of resilience, cultural pride, and the interconnectedness of all.

Elder Lorna is available on Tuesdays in LC 214, The Meeting Place.
