Luther College makes transformative change for a more grace-filled, just, and joyful world.
Luther College prepares students to be compassionate, creative, and critical thinkers, through academic excellence and a community of care that is rooted in our call to love and serve our neighbours.
Rooted and Open
We are rooted in the Lutheran intellectual tradition and open to insights from other religious, spiritual, and secular traditions. In our Canadian context, we feel especially called to recognize and value Indigenous worldviews, knowledge, and perspectives.
Excellence – innovation, creativity, exploration, and critical thinking; the desire to do our best in everything that we do
Compassion, Care, and Stewardship – care for all entrusted to us — students, one another, our resources, and the world we live in
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion – safety, acceptance, respect for all while valuing differences in individuals and among people(s)
Integrity – honesty, transparency, and accountability

My presidency began in 2020 at the height of the pandemic. Fast forward two years and much work had been done on new Vision, Mission, Values statements as well as a strategic framework that eventually turned into the Vision 2025 Strategic Plan. Stakeholder engagement sessions and deep consultations resulted in our modernized Vision statement.
In 2023–24, significant change was managed in realigning the College Leadership Group in a manner that more efficiently
provides cost-effective corporate services of the institution.
Progress was also made on making our community more inclusive for LGBTQ2SIA+ communities at both campuses. Work also was completed in Indigenization efforts, including a committee now called mâmawi-itohtêwak, meaning “walking together.”
Our Elder-in-Residence, Elder Lorna Standingready, has been a marvelous addition and wisdom keeper for our community.
I value the connections made for Luther College with government, the church, and national bodies such as Universities Canada.
I am grateful for my time as President; I have learned a significant amount and have made many deep and positive relationships with good people who care about our students and community. I am proud of the great work at Luther College and for each person’s part in helping us fulfill our purpose as an academic institution.
I am pleased to provide this update on our 2023–24 year.
In accordance with good governance practice, a review of President Marc Jerry was conducted in year four of his five-year contract. Valuable input was provided by faculty, staff, and many other stakeholders including current/recent Board members, donors, government representatives, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada leaders, and professional colleagues. However, while this work was underway, President Jerry resigned from Luther College effective June 30, 2024.
Dr. Murray Knuttila was then selected as Interim President of Luther College for one year (July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025) following a search by the Board. Dr. Knuttila served on Luther’s Board of Regents from 2013 to 2020. He also served as the Vice-President and Provost of Brock University, and the Assistant Vice-President, Academic and Dean of Arts at the University of Regina. Dr. Knuttila is a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Regina (ELCIC).
The Board passed a resolution encouraging both campuses to publicly display support for the sexually and gender diverse community including prominently displaying the pride flag during Regina’s Pride week in June. This work aligns with the College’s values of inclusion, acceptance, and respect for all.
While the College is currently fiscally sound,
financial challenges remain following the COVID pandemic. A goal in each year’s budget is to place 2.5% of the estimated cost of Luther’s facilities in a capital replacement and operating reserve account. We have not been able to make this contribution for the High School in two of the last three years. The Board is confident and committed to keep both the University and High School campuses financially viable for future generations, especially with the High School campus marking 100 years of being located on Royal Street in 2026.
Luther College has deep academic roots within the Regina community thanks to our dedicated faculty and staff who provide the best
educational experience for our students, to our Board of Regents who dedicate their time to the policy and fiduciary oversight of the College, and to our alumni and donors who continue to support our mission.

Luther College has five strategic themes in our Vision 2025 Strategic Plan. These activities are a glimpse into some of the work in each of those areas.
Pursuing academic excellence through an enriching, innovative, and student-centered experience.
The IB Biology and IB Environmental Systems & Societies classes went to Vancouver Island to the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre. 22 students learned about marine macroinvertebrates by getting to touch and develop experiments with them. They also explored marine life in tidal pools at a local beach and learned about temperate rainforest species.
Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Nicole Hansmeier received $231,000 in funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada and through internal funds for the project “Towards a comprehensive and sustainable wastewater-based surveillance program in Saskatchewan.”
The Nonprofit & Voluntary Sector Studies Network at Luther College received multi-year funding from the BHER (Business for Higher Education Research) grant in partnership with the Government of Canada. This grant provided students with hands-on experience by working with community-based nonprofits focused on sustainability. The theme of the grant is net-zero, with a goal to prepare students to succeed in green careers.
Supporting the whole student to realize their purpose, passion, and potential in the world.
The St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog program brought a couple of furry friends to The Student Village residence at the University and to the High School during exams.
The University campus piloted a first-year mentoring program, matching new Luther students with faculty or staff to be their champion and mentor. Five faculty and seven staff volunteered for this program, pairing up with around 10 students each.
In June, there was a special flag-raising ceremony for Pride week. The students read an explanation of the progress flag and concluded with a prayer of support and blessing. It was a significant show of support for inclusivity, particularly for the LGBTQ2SIA+ community.
The dorm students from the High School, along with a few adult chaperones, took a road trip over the winter break and travelled to North Battleford, Edmonton, Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff, Calgary, and Drumheller!
Luther College’s Indigenization committee on the University campus was blessed with a new Cree name “mamawiitohtewak,” which means “walking together.” A special pipe naming ceremony and feast was presided over by Elder Lorna and pipe carrier Preston Littletent. The naming ceremony represents the desire to walk together in this generational journey of learning and reconciling.
Luther College High School hosted 11 German exchange students. The students stayed for six weeks, attending various classes, sometimes with their counterparts and often in other classes that were of particular interest. The German students also participated in the musical, soccer, yarn club, and chess club. They were very appreciative of the warm and cordial welcome they received from both Luther students and faculty as well.
Fostering a diverse, trustworthy, and respectful workplace with engaged faculty and staff.
The search for a new Dean was a critical part of the activities at the University campus, pending the end of Dr. Yvonne’s Petry term. Dr. Derrek Eberts was appointed the Dean effective July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2029, joining Luther from Brandon University.
We said farewell to our Interim Chaplain at the University and thanked Rev. Dr. Sarah Dymund for her compassion and support to all students and employees!
Employees from both campuses of Luther College attended the UR Inspiring Leadership Forum to hear 2024 Keynote Speakers Lisa Laflamme, Masih Alinejad, and Silvia Vasquez-Lavado. The forum is an opportunity for women to hear the inspirational stories of internationally renowned leaders and network with each other.
Stewarding our resources to create a sustainable future.
University students partnered with the City of Regina to expand their understanding of the City’s netzero framework. These students researched economic impacts of net-zero as part of their course work in PPE 400 – Philosophy, Politics and Economics, taught by Dr. Marc Jerry, Luther College President. The students worked on projects to tackle the City of Regina’s real-life challenges. The projects ranged from lowering vehicle emissions, improving public transit, and developing the green jobs workforce, and more.
Luther College received an award at the 16th Annual Education for Sustainable Development Recognition Awards. These awards recognize projects that educate, encourage, and engage others in sustainable development. The Nonprofit & Voluntary Sector Studies Network at Luther College was recognized for the Sustainable Development Goal Summit, which brought together leaders to collaborate on social issues such as poverty, climate change, and health.
Developing a lifelong connection with our communities.
Over 120 High School alumni came back for Homecoming in 2023. We had a reception at Mosaic Stadium, Saturday morning brunch and school tours, and a banquet and dance. The classes of ’83 and ’88 were particularly well represented.
The Nonprofit & Voluntary Sector Studies Network and the South Sask Community Foundation launched the Growing Nonprofit Series to enhance knowledge and capacity in the nonprofit sector. The program offered free learning opportunities, including virtual toolkit workshops, participation in Nonprofit Sector Leadership and Innovation certificate courses, and in-person events to anyone interested.
Luther College hosted a visit from the Executive Director of NECU – the Network of Evangelical Lutheran Colleges and Universities. As one of the 26 Lutheran schools in this group (and the only Canadian one!) we are a proud member of this network of Lutheran educational institutions across North America! NECU Executive Director Rev. Lamont Wells works to promote and celebrate our Lutheran distinctiveness as we educate and support students of all spectrums of diversity.
We are deeply thankful to every donor who supported Luther College this past year. Your generosity has significantly advanced our mission to create students who are compassionate, creative, and critical thinkers.

While academic excellence is our hallmark, so too are the many ways in which this community of care uplifts and enriches the lives of its students. It is important that all students who are eager to succeed, regardless of economic circumstance, can benefit from a Luther education. The Community Bursary was established in 2011 and provides financial support for students who would not otherwise have the chance to attend Luther College High School from Grade 9 through to Grade 12. This year we were able to support 10 students on the community bursary, four of which also received dorm funding in addition to tuition costs.
“Starting high school was a big jump in academic life and coming to this school helped me in ways that I was struggling in. Luther has taught me to be open and kind to the people around me as the community here is small but also large in friendship, acceptance, and diversity.”
Moo Shee , Community Bursary recipient

Luther College is able to operate both campuses through assistance from our generous donors. These donations allow the College to offer scholarships and bursaries to assist as many students as possible to receive a Luther educational experience. Luther College High School’s operations continued to be impacted by the effects of the pandemic, and the number of international students were well below the pre-pandemic enrolment. Tuition at the University recovered to prepandemic levels. Our donors have allowed Luther College to remain financially sustainable as we work to rebuild enrolments.
As of June 30, 2024
The Board of Regents comprises the following individuals who generously volunteer their time and expertise to the governance of Luther College, Regina. The Board works with the President of Luther College as stewards of the College’s financial resources and assets, ensuring the College remains faithful to the Vision, Mission, and Values, and develops the strategic plans for the advancement and long-term sustainability of the institution.
In addition to regular board meetings, there are five standing Board Committees that meet throughout the academic year: Audit, Executive, Finance, Human Resources, and Governance.

Luther College is situated on Treaty 4 lands. These are the territories of the nêhiyawak, Anihšināpēk, Dakota, Lakota, and Nakoda, and the homeland of the Métis/ Michif Nation. This is where we will strive to honour and transform our relationships with one another.
