THE LUTHER DIFFERENCE

START HERE.

GO ANYWHERE.

Luther graduates are more than prepared for university. They’re a different kind of graduate from other high schools: compassionate, creative, critical thinkers!

2

By choosing Luther College High School, you aren’t just choosing a school that will challenge your student in the classroom — you’re choosing a school that helps your student become a compassionate, creative, and critical thinker who is ready to make transformative change in the world!

We pursue academic excellence in a small, close-knit community that cares for its students. It’s a place where they can receive a well-rounded liberal arts education that challenges them to achieve what they might not have thought possible.

VISION Luther College makes transformative change for a more grace-filled, just, and joyful world.

MISSION Luther College prepares students to be compassionate, creative, and critical thinkers through academic excellence and a community of care that is rooted in our call to love and serve our neighbours.

KHUSHI GOYAL IB DIPLOMA GRADUATE LUTHER COLLEGE CLASS OF 2022 “I chose Luther College High School because I wanted to be surrounded by like-minded peers. Students at Luther use their talents to discover their full potential. They don’t do this because they feel they have to, or because they should; they do this because they have an intrinsic motivation to explore and serve the world.” Khushi is pursuing a Bachelor of Science and Masters in Management Dual Degree at the University of British Columbia. Her major concentrations are neuroscience and public health. Khushi received the Hugh M. Brock National Entrance Scholarship, a Presidential Scholarship worth $40,000. “This scholarship was a huge driver for me. It gave me the confidence to dream bigger. My last year was spent surrounded by exceptionally talented UBC students, which raised my bar and inspired me to surpass it. I hope to make the most of this opportunity by diving into the world of social activism, scientific research and student leadership.” 3

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is internationally recognized as one of the highest standards in postsecondary preparatory education. Grade 11 and 12 Luther students have the option to enroll in the full IB Diploma Programme or take individual IB courses of their choice. The IB Diploma Programme is an academically rigorous, enriched program that covers and extends beyond Saskatchewan curricula in depth and breadth.

Luther students who take six IB courses (one from each subject group) and complete the core components of the program (Creativity, Activity, Service, Theory of Knowledge, and the Extended Essay) graduate with the IB Diploma in addition to the Saskatchewan secondary diploma. All major Canadian universities recognize IB students with advanced standing, transfer credits, and/or other privileges. Courses recognized and minimum grades vary among universities. www.ibo.org

EAL

ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE Luther College offers an English as an Additional Language (EAL) program to equip students with the essential English language skills for academic success at Luther and in university and post-secondary studies! Using both one-on-one instruction and classroom teaching, we ensure individual needs are being assessed and supported in a positive and caring learning environment. Benchmarked by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the EAL program moves students through three stages of learning: EAL Intermediate, EAL Advanced, and EAL Higher Level. Students in our program are encouraged to join afterschool clubs, sports teams, and arts (drama, musical theatre, and choir). It is through these experiences that EAL students gain more motivation to practice and use their newly acquired language skills.

6

JENNY BAEK EAL GRADUATE LUTHER COLLEGE CLASS OF 2019 Originally from South Korea, Jenny moved to Canada in 2013. She enrolled at Luther in the EAL program and went on to achieve university credit in her mainstream English literature classes, including IB level courses. After Luther College, she moved to Edmonton to study chemistry at the University of Alberta. “The one-on-one teaching style of the EAL Higher Level program helped me develop confidence in both speaking and writing in English. If I had difficulty in writing assignments or had an in-class presentation coming up, I would go over them with (EAL teacher) Madame Schroeder ahead of time. I liked how personalized the program was! Luther College High School is a great place not only for academic learning but also for making valuable friendships and connections. I felt like Luther was more than just a school for me; it was a community. There are various opportunities such as L.I.T. and the All-College banquet for students to participate and contribute to fostering a welcoming environment for all. But it is also important to know that it’s all about putting yourself out there and participating in these different activities. It may feel awkward at first to be outside your comfort zone, but these are the moments that will help you grow as an individual.”

STUDENT LIVING

WIDE OPEN

SPACES.

Our historic campus goes back to 1926 when the City of Regina as we know it today was still in its infancy. Located at 1500 Royal Street, our campus is located near the historic Government House and the RCMP Depot Training Academy.

Our boarding program helps students become mature, responsible, and independent young adults. Our dorm students live on our campus with all the safety and comforts of home. With access to an on-site school nurse and activities just for the dorm students, students are cared for both in the classroom and outside of it. A weekly and daily routine, personal support, and friendships are all included!

While dorm students have lots of activities just for them, they also fully participate in life at Luther with the day students, whether that is playing on the basketball team, or being the number one fan in the stands!

AHRA CHO DORM GRADUATE | LUTHER COLLEGE CLASS OF 2023 Ahra moved to Luther College from Korea and is now pursuing Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. “Our family friends living in the Regina area spoke very highly of Luther College High School, and my family wanted the safety and support of a boarding program. I also was interested in Luther’s International Baccalaureate (IB) program because of my strong interest in math and visual art. I enjoyed the strong dorm community at Luther. We were all in the same position being far away from our homes and our families, but we all supported each other. This brought us closer together and

provided a deep sense of connection. As dorm students, we had all of our meals together and did activities together. There were lots of weekend activities in the dorm and even a fun mini dorm student Olympics. I also loved going on the ski trip to Banff, Alberta and the canoe trip in northern Saskatchewan. This made us like family. Starting school in a new country was scary and daunting at first. Contrary to my worries, I am now overflowing with unforgettable memories and precious people around me. I sincerely hope that future international students and dormitory students like me can find happiness here as I did.” 9

INCLUSIVITY

WE ARE ALL

WELCOME HERE.

Students do not have to be Christian to attend Luther College.

10

There is an adage that says, “We become what we surround ourselves with”. Our diverse student body is part of what makes Luther College High School so unique, and it’s one of our greatest strengths. International students make up around 15% of our population, and even more of our students are born in countries other than Canada, and now make Regina their home. To celebrate this diversity, one of our newest traditions is Multicultural Night, an evening planned by our student body to share music, food, and traditions from around the world. It’s just one of the ways our students learn about each other’s beliefs and values.

The other significant learning opportunity for our students each day is in chapel, a vital part of the Christian background of Luther College. Chapel features a variety of speakers from a multi-faith perspective so that students can reflect, broaden their understandings, be spiritually challenged or uplifted, and be entertained. Chapel gives us the opportunity to actively listen to both religious and nonreligious viewpoints that we may or may not agree with, to grow spiritually, to think critically about what we believe and don’t believe, and to consider why we hold the views we do.

THAT CARES. Equally as important to our mission of academic excellence is our community of care.

RACHEL VANDERHOOFT STUDENT ATHLETE | LUTHER COLLEGE CLASS OF 2021 Rachel is a Regina Cougar women’s basketball player and Bachelor of Arts student. She intends to pursue a career in athletic therapy. “I played volleyball and basketball as a Luther Lion. I especially appreciated the relationships with my teammates and the leadership from my coaches. Coaches were very easy to talk to and gave me good advice, support, and encouragement. It was amazing to play in and experience helping with both the L.I.T. and L.I.V.T. tournaments. The teachers at Luther were very approachable and supportive. I greatly appreciated that they offered additional study help and tutorials, and were always willing to answer questions.

Alumni Andrew and Rachel Vanderhooft 14

My experience as a student at Luther helped me with time management skills, study habits, and establishing a good routine which has served me well in university. The writing skills I developed at Luther helped me learn to write quality essays so I was especially prepared for university-level writing.”
