SC officially opened its newest independent living apartments at Trinity Village in Hickory, North Carolina, back in March. Move-ins are strong, so it appears we will fill up faster than we budgeted!
If you know someone who is seeking a reasonable rental apartment with access to the rest of the Trinity Village community, please send them our way.
the wave of Baby Boomers needs a good, safe place to live.
LSC is thinking ahead, which makes me think behind. With today’s expansions, we carry on a long tradition of planning for the future.
Trinity Village, Hickory was our very first senior community, and it is the second LSC senior care community where we have added independent living. We hope to do the same with most of our free-standing health care communities over the next few years as
When LSC’s first community, Trinity Village, was being planned in 1959, it was a team effort. The North Carolina Lutheran Church, led by three Hickory congregations (Holy Trinity Lutheran, St. Stephen’s Lutheran, and St. Andrew’s Lutheran, and many more) joined to build the state’s first Lutheran Home. Lutheran pastors Dr. A. W. Lippard and Dr. J. L. Norris, and many more, led the effort. The Neil Eckard family
gave the land. Lutherans and others raised much of the money for the $297,000 building! That would cost millions today! And the cost of care was $6.74 a day!
All the saints noted above, and many more, created LSC. Look at where we are today: eleven senior communities with fourteen different operations, senior services, and services for children and families ranging from foster care to refugee and immigrant services to disaster response. All in all, it’s a $250 million annual budget with over 2,400 teammates spread across both Carolinas!
Let us remember all the saints before us — and let us strive to add our own names to that roll, as we continue to serve where the need is greatest.
LSC’s Shepherd Society stands as a pillar of support and dedication within the organization, comprising a community of donors and volunteers whose unwavering commitment fuels the advancement of LSC’s vital services.
The Shepherd Society encompasses three categories:
• The Shepherd Giving Society honors donors whose financial contributions total $1,000 or more within a calendar year — as well as lifetime members, now known as Golden Staff members, whose cumulative giving reaches exceptional milestones, such as $50,000 for individuals and $100,000 for organizations. These donors not only sustain but amplify LSC’s ability to provide essential services.
• The Shepherd Legacy Society recognizes individuals who have generously included LSC in their estate planning, ensuring a lasting impact that extends far into the future.
• The Shepherd Volunteer Society is comprised of individuals who epitomize the spirit of service by contributing 100 hours or more per calendar year to LSC ministries. They directly enhance the organization’s
capacity to support and uplift neighbors in challenging circumstances.
Welcome to the following new Shepherd Society members who have joined LSC since January 2025:

LSC is thrilled to announce the expansion of its home care program, Trinity at Home, to New Hanover County. The program will be located on the campus of LSC’s Trinity Landing, a senior living community in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Trinity at Home provides personal care and support services designed to help older adults and others needing care comfortably in their homes. The program emphasizes a person-centered approach to care, creating plans tailored to meet each client’s specific needs.
Trinity at Home began 10 years ago in Rowan County on LSC’s Trinity Oaks campus in Salisbury. Over the past decade, it has successfully helped many individuals main-
tain their independence and quality of life.
“Trinity at Home’s invaluable service will be essential in supporting our independent living residents, allowing them to age gracefully and comfortably in their own homes,” Trinity Landing Executive Director Bonnie Skobel said.
Services offered to clients by Trinity at Home include caring companionship and conversation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, help with hobbies and other interests, preparation of healthy meals, laundry, and respite care.
Holly Daniel, director of resident Services at Trinity Landing, also directs the new Trinity at Home office.
“Trinity at Home in New Hanover Coun-
ty now has four fantastic team members, and we’re growing every day. Our services include everything from medication management and grooming assistance to transportation for appointments and even pet and house plant care while residents travel,” Daniel said. “We’re excited to see this service flourish and make a positive impact on our community. If you’re interested in joining our team or want more information, please reach out. Let’s make aging in place a joyful experience together.”

The Worker of Wonders (WOW) Award recognizes volunteers across LSC who demonstrate outstanding dedication and service to our ministry. The awards are presented annually in both North and South Carolina.
Two organizations received LSC’s South Carolina WOW Award for 2024: Second Saturday and Dupre Catering. Both were instrumental in refurbishing LSC’s New Americans Program Welcome House in Columbia, which has been serving as temporary housing for recently arrived refugee families.
Second Saturday is a service ministry offering home repairs for people in need. Last May, it mobilized over 60 volunteers from 20 local churches and nonprofits for a weekend workday at the Columbia Welcome House. Teams of volunteers worked side by side to paint, mulch, install new light fixtures and flooring, and more.
Meanwhile, Dupre Percival and the Dupre Catering team arrived with their smoker and whipped up an entire BBQ feast, including his famous “Bubba rice.”
Dupre Catering also provides hot meals five days a week to LSC’s Day Services for Youth Program (see page 6), and Dupre Percival has been known to participate in “table talks” at LSC’s Kinard Manor recovery program for women.
“Along with our involvement in Second Saturday, the daily meal service we provide to LSC’s foster youth is an important part of our company’s commitment to making our community better for those in need,” said Percival.
Second Saturday and Dupre Catering received their WOW Awards at LSC’s Shepherd Society luncheon in Columbia on November 4.

Michael and Sherrill Hollar received LSC’s North Carolina WOW Award for 2024. For 16 years, the couple devoted time to assisting residents at Trinity Village in Hickory, North Carolina, where Michael’s parents established the Bryce and Margie Hollar Scholarship Endowment Fund to support LSC teammates in their future endeavors.
“Our Vision at Lutheran Services Carolinas is to fulfill the proclamation of Christ in John 10:10, ‘I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.’ And our Mission is, ‘Empowered by Christ, we walk together with all we serve.’ Michael and Sherrill have walked the walk and talked the talk,” Trinity Village Life Enrichment Director Sharon Benfield said. “They have given of their time, talent, and treasures to help provide abundant life for teammates, neighbors, and family members.”
Every Sunday the Hollars helped prepare the chapel for service, transported residents to and from the chapel, and assisted in any way needed, from displaying the PowerPoint to getting a blanket for a cold resident. They also assisted with communion and special services.
The Hollars began volunteering at Trinity Village when Michael’s mother, Margie Hollar, suffered a stroke and a major heart attack and moved into the health and rehab part of the community.
“When Michael’s mom was here, we came every day to take her to physical therapy. We would also do things with other residents here because a lot of them had been from our church,” Sherrill Hollar said. “We were trying to go to first service at our church and then come here for service. Then we decided we were much more needed here. And I’ve been here ever since.”
“They live their life in service to others. Michael and Sherrill serve in any way they are able so that our residents may have life and have it abundantly,” Lisa Anderson said in the nomination form. “They serve as the hands and feet of Christ.”
Since the inception of the Bryce and Margie Hollar Scholarship Endowment Fund, over 30 LSC teammates have benefited from the support of the Hollar family. The fund’s primary purpose is to recognize and encourage LSC teammates who provide direct care or services and wish to further their education in a field that will advance their abilities to care for clients of LSC.
“It’s a funny story. My father-in-law (Bryce
Hollar) decided he was going to give everybody at Trinity Village a $100 bill. I said, ‘We aren’t doing that, let’s start a scholarship,’” Sherrill Hollar said. “And it’s just amazing, it really is.”
Michael Hollar passed away on October 16, 2024, at the age of 77, at Atrium Health-Wake Forest Baptist. Sherrill intends to honor Michael’s memory, continue the scholarship, and keep volunteering at Trinity Village for as long as she is able.
She reflects fondly on the time they spent at Trinity Village, getting to know the residents and continuing the legacy of servanthood. She’s happy it was something they could do together.
“I really don’t do things for awards. It makes me happy that we can share with the scholarship,” Sherrill said. “There are so many people here who do so many wonderful things, not just me. I will keep volunteering until I move in here (Trinity Village), and I will probably still be doing the same things after I get here.”
“There is no way to quantify the magnitude of the difference the Hollars have made at Trinity Village, but I can tell you, it’s priceless. Only heaven knows the number of lives touched because of their attitude of servanthood,” Benfield said. “There are no finer human beings than this couple and the love of Christ shines in them. So, on behalf of Trinity Village, thank you for the abundant life and beautiful legacy you have brought to the lives of those we serve.”
On a sunny Tuesday morning, Regional Director Chaz Harris ambles through the metal detector into LSC’s Columbia, South Carolina, Day Services for Youth program.
Walter James, a security guard, stands by the door. Sheena English, Harris’s “right-hand woman” onsite, processes a mountain of paperwork at a communal table. Other teammates bustle in the kitchen.
It’s early, and only two young men have arrived so far. They joke quietly as Harris enters the room. Youth in the Day Services program are never alone; at least one Direct Support Professional (DSP) accompanies up to three participants at a time.
The vibes are so good that it is hard to imagine a scuffle breaking out, but the cheerful surroundings belie the harsh truth.
“Our youth have been through some of the worst traumas you can imagine,” says Harris.
South Carolina’s Department of Social Services (SC DSS) approached LSC in 2023 to help meet the critical needs of foster youth in transition. The Columbia Day Services for Youth program, which opened in July 2023, was the partnership’s first fruit.
Typically, participants’ emotional and behavioral issues make regular classroom education a challenge, and they are often between foster family placements. Without LSC, many would spend their days and even their nights at the local DSS office.
LSC and SC DSS have since opened an Upstate Day Services location in Clinton and two Emergency Bed Programs: one in Columbia and one in Clinton. They are now planning an intake facility in downtown Columbia, which Harris will also oversee.
“When our youth arrive, they are so excited just to do their laundry and take a shower,” Harris notes. “Some haven’t had a chance for days.”
LSC’s Day Services for Youth program received the 2024 People’s Choice Awards Partner Award from the South Carolina Department of Social Services. Day Services for Youth Director Steven Jones (left) and Day Services for Youth Regional Director Chaz Harris (right) are pictured with the award.
In the mornings, participants alternate between an hour of group work, therapy, or schoolwork and an hour of recreation time. They receive three meals a day, including five hot meals provided by Dupre Catering of Columbia.
In the afternoons, Harris and his team provide typical teenage experiences, such as lunch out or a trip to the gaming arcade.
Good days are not accidents. Before participants arrive each morning, two case managers review each youth’s universal application (UA) – an electronic packet of clinical notes that ensures consistent care. Each case manager handles up to 12 young people.
Sarah Brown, the program’s clinical director, also consults the UAs when planning weekly group discussion topics.
“That way I know what the kids are struggling with and what is likely to resonate,” she says.
Activities and approaches are adjusted throughout the day to meet participants’ needs. Trauma-informed training is a must for teammates; some youth “take off” when stressed, while others may pick a fight. DSPs keep a vigilant but unobtrusive watch, offering a quiet word or a calm gesture to quell anxiety and de-escalate conflict.
Over time, whether a young person participates every day or just passes through, subtle changes emerge: longer eye contact, a firmer handshake, more relaxed conversation. One program can’t offset a lifetime of hardship, but it can help youth develop skills and self-esteem.
The entire team is committed to the youths’ success – a fact SC DSS recognized with its 2024 People’s Choice Partner of the Year Award.
“It’s demanding work, but we do it because we love it,” notes Harris.
The crowd fondly reflected on LSC’s rich history in Catawba County, North Carolina, as they celebrated the grand opening and dedication of its Trinity Village independent living apartments in March. This new addition to the Trinity Village campus represents a significant milestone in LSC’s ongoing mission to provide high-quality living options for seniors. These apartments will allow LSC to serve the entire continuum of care for seniors in the area.
For almost 65 years, Trinity Village has served seniors in Hickory, North Carolina, and the surrounding areas. LSC President and CEO Ted Goins began his career as a CNA at Trinity Village, which was then known as Lutheran Home Hickory, and eventually became the community’s administrator.
“This (Trinity Village) was the first ministry created by Lutheran Services of the Aging to serve seniors,” Goins said to attendees of the grand opening event. “Our dream is to always serve more people, and today that dream grows.”
The event began with an opening prayer from LSC Board of Trustees Chair Doug Nelson, who thanked everyone involved in the project for their vision, dedication, and hard work, which brought it to fruition.
“Bless this place, all who will call it home. May it be a sanctuary of peace, comfort, and community. Grant that those who live here will find companionship, support, and a sense of belonging,” Nelson prayed. “Guide us in our mission to serve and care for one another, reflecting Your love and grace in all that we do. May Your presence be felt in every corner of this community, and may Your blessings be upon us now and always.”
The Rev. CeCee Mills, assistant to the Bishop of the NC Synod ELCA, officially dedicated the apartments.
“Be with us now and bless us as we ded-
icate Trinity Village independent living apartments to your praise and your honor,” Mills prayed. “Place your special blessing on our residents, that they may know your love and kindness and that others may be inspired by their years of faithfulness and wisdom.”
Also in attendance at the event were Hickory Mayor Hank Guess, and the children of long-time Trinity Village Administrator Isaac Kuhn; Pastor Beth Kearney, Frank Kuhn, and Pastor Mary Canniff-Kuhn and their spouses.
After the speakers concluded, attendees were given the opportunity to tour the apartment complex which offers a vibrant and supportive environment for seniors, providing modern amenities and a range of services designed to enhance the quality of life for its residents.

LSA’s pre-Covid skilled nursing occupancy figures were consistently strong, measuring 92.9% for FYE 2018 and 93.2% for FYE 2019. Occupancy dipped during Covid; since then, the focus has been on rebuilding occupancy while Covid reimbursement rate add-ons have dried up. Overall nursing occupancy at the end of FYE 2024 approached pre-Covid levels, with September occupancy at 92.0% and a year-to-date (YTD) average of 91.1%.
Assisted living rebounded to 88.2% for FYE 2024, compared with a 79.8% low in FYE 2021. Although this sector is financially less impactful than skilled nursing, LSA will continue to pursue occupancy rates above 90%.
Independent living communities comprise a significant chunk of LSA’s operating margin. All had occupancy in the low to mid-ninetieth percentile. The largest, Trinity Landing in Wilmington, reached a 97.7% high.
On the expense side, LSA faces continued pressure on salaries, wages, and teammate benefits — with double-digit increases relative to last year. One strategic, budgeted increase was a bonus primarily focused on direct care workers with over 1 year of service. These distributions, totaling $1 million, were designed to reward good performance and boost retention, directly impacting the quality and cost of care.
LSA continues to watch for opportunities to diversify revenue sources by expanding resident and management services to similar organizations.
Child & Family Services — Lutheran Family Services in the Carolinas (LFS) had a favorable year financially, with an operating income of $244,668 in FYE 2024. This was below budgeted expectations but well above FYE 2023 operating income. The New Americans Program (NAP) added a Welcome House in Salisbury, North Carolina, and expanded programs in Clemson and Spartanburg, South Carolina — serving more clients across all sites.
Hurricane Helene underscored the importance of Disaster Case Management. In addition to repairing affected LSC facilities, LFS helped families rebuild and repair their homes and provided support in all recovery areas.
The success of the South Carolina Foster Care program led the state’s Department of Social Services to expand its partnership with LFS. The Day Services for Youth program grew significantly, leading to a new Emergency Overnight Bed program in the Midlands, which has since expanded to the Upstate region. The census for LFS’s Low Country Foster Care program also increased by 3% in 2024 compared with 2023.
LFS’s North Carolina Foster Care Program created a new recruitment team to address the growing need for foster families statewide.
The North Carolina Group Home program increased the number of client days served by approximately 8.4% (808 days) in 2024. Group homes remained at capacity.
Increasing expenses due to inflation and expected wage increases will continue to add downward pressure on LFS’s operating income in FY25. The Child and Family Team will continue to review and explore new program opportunities and monitor costs accordingly.

“Empowered by Christ, we walk together with all we serve.”
Miss Clonnie Eudy, a resident of LSC’s Trinity Place in Albemarle, North Carolina, had just one wish for her 99th birthday: She wanted to ride a motorcycle.
With help from teammates and neighbors, Trinity Place Life Enrichment Director Tracy Dean made it happen.
Local motorcyclist J. V. Curlee took Eudy for a spin around the grounds on his 1996 Gold Wing Motor Trike. Our birthday girl looked the part in a vintage motorcycle jacket, sourced by Trinity Place Social Worker Genny Jordan from the former Farrell’s Harley Davidson store in town.
After her exciting ride, the Lake Tillery Chapter of the Eagle Wings Motorcycle Club presented Eudy with a certificate and an official membership badge.
Wishing you a happy birthday and many more, Miss Clonnie!
