Senior
LSC’s ministry to elders began in 1960 with the opening of its first senior care community in Hickory, North Carolina. Since then, LSC has expanded its offerings across North Carolina to embrace the entire continuum of care, including skilled nursing, rehabilitation, assisted living, and memory care; independent retirement living; and home care and adult day programs.
In 2024, this branch of LSC’s ministry served 3,487 seniors and had operating revenue of $176.9 million.
LSC’s in-home care program, Trinity at Home, celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2024. It recently expanded to serve New Hanover and Catawba Counties in addition to Rowan County, with 70-plus clients and growing. Trinity at Home leads the Rowan County Alzheimer’s Support Group, which meets monthly at LSC’s Trinity Oaks community.
LSC’s Trinity Living Center, based in Salisbury, serves up to 60 adults who need additional support during the day, including many participants with dementia.
LSC provides housing for lowincome seniors and adults with disabilities at the Dallas High School Apartments and at Lutherhaus, a partnership with Lutheran churches in Hickory. LSC is also a partner in several Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), which provide long-term services and support for seniors on Medicaid and Medicare.
LSC partners with Searstone, a nonprofit senior living community in Cary, to award a portion of its annual proceeds to programs serving low-income seniors in Wake County. Over $6.8 million in grants has been awarded since the partnership began in 2014.
Child & Family
In 2024, LSC opened its newest senior independent living community on the Trinity Village campus in Hickory.
LSC’s ministry to vulnerable children, families, and adults has roots in the Lutheran Orphanage of the South, founded in 1888. Today, in addition to foster care and adoption services, LSC provides adult mental health, recovery, and disability services; disaster response; and refugee resettlement programs.
In 2024, this branch of LSC’s ministry served nearly 5,000 individuals in North and South Carolina and had operating revenue of over $44.2 million.
Foster Care and Adoption — Last year, over 500 children in North and South Carolina had loving, temporary homes through LSC Foster Care. LSC recruits, trains, and supports families in several levels of foster care to meet the needs of a wide range of children, including those with significant behavioral or emotional challenges, medical conditions, and developmental disorders. LSC’s Foster to Adopt program celebrated 10 finalized adoptions in 2024.
Teammate
Disaster Response — LSC partners with the national organization Lutheran Disaster Response. LSC helps survivors return to safe, sanitary, secure housing after local emergency agencies respond. LSC provides case management, connects survivors to financial help, and coordinates construction and repair resources.
Recovery Programs — LSC helps ensure Upstate and Midlands South Carolinians have the support they need to heal from substance use disorder. LSC’s Trinity Recovery distributes harm reduction kits and offers peer support to high-need populations; it also provides recovery awareness training to local church congregations. LSC also operates WeCo Cottage, a West Columbia recovery residence for college and university students.
In partnership with the South Carolina Department of Social Services, LSC provides a growing array of services for high-risk youth who lack a foster placement. During the day, LSC provides nutritious meals, educational support, and social enrichment to Columbia area foster youth who cannot attend regular school for behavioral or other reasons. In 2024, LSC Day Services for Youth opened a second location in Clinton. LSC also offers an Emergency Overnight Bed program for foster youth in Columbia.
LSC actively pursues an organizational culture of excellence to improve the lives of everyone it touches. In 2021, LSC launched Teammate Services to build on the success of its core values and The LSC Way customer service program (see page 6).
Teammate Services combines leading-edge technology and human best practices to strengthen recruitment, satisfaction, retention, and advancement for LSC’s 2,600-plus teammates. In 2024, Teammate Services streamlined recruitment processes, introduced virtual orientation, and implemented a calendar of personal outreach to all new teammates. Engagement surveys now take place annually instead of every other year, and teammate satisfaction continues to grow.
Teammate Services also enhances the LSC client, resident, and family experience through operational efficiencies such as paperless admissions and automated work orders. The Trinity Support Team, a traveling team of nurses and other key front-line positions, has ensured optimal staffing across LSC’s service area since 2022.
Beyond the walls and campuses of LSC, Teammate Services ensures the organization’s mission, impact, and employment opportunities are widely known across the Carolinas. In 2024, Teammate Services attended job fairs in Asheville, Salisbury, and Albemarle and participated in NC HOSA (Health Occupations Student Association), an educational culture and career networking event attended by more than 3,000 North Carolina high school and college students.
