With 260 days of sunshine a year, your summer vacation can now be your whenever vacation. Because, while much of Colorado freezes, the Royal Gorge Region continues to bask in sunshine and mild temperatures, earning Cañon City the nickname of “The Climate Capital of Colorado.”
With October to June swinging from sweater to short-sleeve weather, the region is a true year-round destination, where every season is “on season” for something you’ll love to see, do, explore, and experience.
The Royal Gorge Region is known as Colorado's Climate Capital, partly because it lies in a "banana belt"—a microclimate that enjoys milder weather, especially in winter, compared to the surrounding area.
Banana belts like this form on the leeward side of mountain ranges. As air rises over a mountain, it cools and releases moisture on the windward side. When it descends on the leeward side, it compresses and warms, creating drier, warmer conditions in the region's rain shadow.
This means that while much of Colorado experiences harsh winter temperatures, the Royal Gorge Region often stays significantly warmer, providing ideal conditions for outdoor activities like mountain biking, hiking, and rock climbing.
“Cañon City is a fantastic place to live, offering endless outdoor recreation and a mild climate. Even in winter, I enjoyed plenty of warm, sunny days!”
