Greetings!

Recently, while visiting with a small business owner, I watched her waiting on customers in between a delightful conversation we were having. As I observed her, I was overcome with a wave of warmth and gratitude for the beautiful city of Dover that I call home. It’s not just the picturesque streets or the historic charm that makes this place special; it’s the heartbeat of the small business community that pulses through its very essence.

From the moment I moved to Dover, I felt a sense of belonging unlike anywhere else. It wasn’t just about the physical space, but also the soulful connections that I forged with the local businesses that breathe life into our streets. Each shop, each restaurant, each service business tells a story – a story of passion, perseverance, and unwavering commitment.

In the embrace of Dover’s small business community, I found my sense of purpose. It’s the warm smile from the owner of the coffee shop that makes my morning sweeter. It’s the conversations shared with the retail owner who knows my story and my family, and I know theirs. It’s the joy of watching the local artist pour her heart onto the canvas.

Being a part of Dover’s small business community is not just about transactions; it’s about connections. It’s about knowing that my purchases support real people with dreams, struggles, and triumphs. It’s about walking into a store and feeling like I’m visiting a friend’s cozy living room (while swinging in their nest chair). It’s about celebrating successes, offering a helping hand during tough times, and sharing the joy of milestones achieved.

But it’s not just about what I receive from this community; it’s about what I give back. It’s the feeling of fulfillment when I choose to shop locally, knowing that my contribution is directly fueling the dreams of those who pour their hearts into their businesses. It’s the sense of pride in being a part of a vibrant ecosystem that doesn’t just sustain itself but thrives because of the collective efforts of its members.

Dover has taught me that being a part of something bigger than myself is a privilege and a responsibility. It’s about celebrating individuality while weaving a tapestry of togetherness. It’s about fostering relationships that transcend transactional boundaries and touch the very core of our humanity.

So, here’s to Dover — a city that isn’t just bricks and mortar, but a canvas painted with dreams and aspirations. Here’s to the small business community that radiates warmth, resilience, and an unwavering spirit. Here’s to the connections we forge, the stories we share, and the legacy we create together.

What do New Hampshire settlements, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and American family farming all have in common?

They all began right here, in Dover!

First settled in 1623, Dover recently celebrated the quadricentennial –our 400th anniversary – in 2023! During the festive lead-up to this momentous occasion, we had numerous events and festivities to celebrate this historic milestone for our city.

Our ongoing focus will be on the cultures that have helped shape our community: From the Native Americans who preceded us, to the French and Irish who toiled in the mills, and to our newest arrivals from Central America and Indonesia – we continue to honor our now shared heritage.

Over the last 400+ years, Dover has accomplished a lot! Here, in Garrison City, New Hampshire was born. It all started in 1623, when New Hampshire’s oldest continuous settlement (and the seventh oldest in the United States) first appeared in what is now the Dover Neck area: Known then as the independent colony of Northam, it would later become part of the New Hampshire province in 1679 and would serve as the state capital in 1792. In 1855, Dover officially became a city.

For four centuries, Dover has flourished through hard work, community, and the blessings of great geography: Connected to the

Atlantic Ocean via the Piscataqua River to its east and the Cochecho and Bellamy Rivers through its center, Dover’s enviable location contributed to the early shipbuilding and farming industries while powering Dover’s sawmills, cotton factories, brick industry, and shoe manufacturing.

In 1632, John Tuttle settled on Dover Point Road and founded Tuttle’s Farm, America’s oldest family farm – 11 generations in the making, now the Strafford Rivers Conservancy and Tendercrop Farm – which sells fresh produce, meat and poultry, baked goods, and gifts on the site of the original Tuttle Farm.

Continue the thread of history in neighboring Rollinsford, at the Colonel Paul Wentworth House, one of the oldest surviving dwellings constructed in New Hampshire. Built in 1701, during the brief interval between the two bloodiest wars fought on New Hampshire soil, the house serves as testament to the resolve of early area pioneers Paul and Abra Wentworth.

For a one-stop-history-shop, downtown Dover’s eclectic Woodman Museum is a place for discovery, wonder, and the study of our common history. Home to a singular collection of artifacts and curiosities, the museum’s relics include a 1771 tax bill to the citizens of Dover from King George; one of Napoleon’s cannons; and a saddle used by Abraham Lincoln to review troops shortly before his assassination.

Also located on the Woodman Museum campus, the Damm Garrison House is one of the few remaining garrisons in the U.S. Originally located in the Back River district of Dover, the Damm

Garrison was later moved to its present site at the museum, where it greets visitors just as it did over 300 years ago.

The Dover Public Library is a natural stop on your historical journey, both for its wealth of research tools and its own historical significance: Pre-dating the United States of America, Dover’s first library became one of the country’s first public libraries (1884), after New Hampshire was the first state to enact legislation to establish public libraries. The current structure opened on Locust Street on July 19, 1905. In 2025, our historic public library will be relocated to the McConnell Center while it undergoes maintenance to preserve its historic architecture and ensure it meets modern needs.

For more history on our New Hampshire Seacoast city, take a guided historic walking tour and learn about the rise and fall of the textile industry, notable visitors and residents of Dover past and present, and the three waterways that gave Dover its economic edge. For information on these tours, Dover’s Heritage Trails, and self-guided walking tours, call (603) 742-2218 or grab a map and guidebook at the Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center.

Cowabunga, Dover!

Before they were heroes in a half-shell battling crime in New York City, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were born right here – in Dover, New Hampshire. In 1983, local artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird oozed the turtles into creation in a modest two-story house on Union Street, where the duo, inspired by a mix of Bruce Lee and a bodacious sense of humor, sketched the now-iconic characters as a joke to make each other laugh.

The first issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles debuted in 1984 at a Portsmouth comic convention… and the rest, as they say, is history! From comics to cartoons, movies, merchandise, and music, the turtles became global icons, captivating fans of all ages.

The Birthplace of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Today, Dover proudly honors its connection to Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo. In 2023, the city unveiled two commemorative markers to celebrate the turtles’ origins. A stylized manhole cover marks the site of the former Mirage Studios at 28 Union Street, while a historical marker stands at the street's entrance on NH Route 108. The Woodman Museum also unveiled its new Birthplace of the Ninja Turtles Gallery.

Explore these landmarks and relive the creation of a franchise that defined a generation. Don't forget to bring a pizza slice for the journey and give it your best, “cowabunga!”

TThe world seems a little more colorful and a touch more melodious in Greater Dover, where the gentle thrum of our vibrant arts, entertainment, and cultural offerings resonates throughout public spaces to spark our collective creativity, fill our social calendars, and write a little background music to everyday life.

Visual Arts and Galleries

Community art comes alive in Greater Dover, thanks to initiatives like the Dover Arts Commission’s Art Beat Program, which connects visual artists with public spaces, encourages public art displays, and creates opportunities for residents to experience and appreciate local talent.

The Art Center is a cornerstone of the community, featuring 6,000 square feet of workshops, artist studios, exhibition spaces, and performance stages. Check their events calendar for exhibits and performances, or join a residency program to immerse yourself in the arts.

Dover also celebrates its growing gallery scene. Downtown’s SEH Studios Art Gallery offers iconic Dover and Seacoast sights in its exhibits, as well as a range of classes for artists of all skill levels. Nearby, the Aplomb Gallery highlights contemporary arts, while its Aplomb Project honors the resilience of survivors of sexual trauma with its powerful portrait series, aiming to inspire advocacy and healing.

Theater and Performing Arts

Theater enthusiasts will find plenty to love. Garrison Players in Rollinsford offers family-friendly productions and youth education programs, while the Rochester Opera House delights audiences with its historic venue and diverse programming for all ages, including a theatre camp and art gallery.

Across the border in Ogunquit, Maine, the Ogunquit Playhouse offers world-class regional theater and inclusive arts education. With a season running from May to October, it features Broadwaycaliber productions starring familiar faces and has premiered new works

like The Da Vinci Code and Mystic Pizza.

For a world-class experience closer to home, visit the Portsmouth Music Hall. This nonprofit performing arts center includes an 895-seat Victorian theater and a 116-seat nightclub-style, converted storefront venue in the heart of downtown Portsmouth. Its yearround lineup draws big-name acts, and its holiday collaboration with the Ogunquit Playhouse brings productions (like 2025’s White Christmas) to the stage.

Music, Festivals, and Events

Looking to add a little variety your cultural pursuits? The Strand, a historic community venue, offers an eclectic mix of performances, from swing bands to comedy shows. Around the city, you’ll find live jazz, karaoke, and regional bands adding their melodies to the mix.

And, as art can be spontaneous and creative joy cannot be contained, peel your eyes and perk up your ears: Arts, culture, and entertainment flourish in every nook and occupy any cranny. Live music – jazz and Irish jams, regional bands and karaoke – play at a variety of venues throughout the city. The annual events calendar (see page 32) is dappled with art festivals and cultural events, cherished parades and holiday celebrations – including the Dover Chamber’s Cochecho Arts Festival (a summerlong arts festival at Henry Law Park).

With all the traditions, entertainment, and odes to the arts that weave the many-faceted fabric of our diverse and historic community.

Come – experience, enjoy, and drink it all in.

The Dover arts await.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Get Comfortable. Stay Awhile!

There’s the beaten path and then, there’s the path just adjacent – that ideal (but not oft found) balance of close to everything, yet just far enough away from it all. Because “all” often equates to crowds and traffic and sky-rocketing prices.

Those who know Dover, know it as that adjacent path and the perfect base for exploring the Seacoast region: Convenient to the Naval Shipyard, the next town over from the University of New Hampshire, quieter (and more affordable) than Portsmouth, and convenient to the Spaulding Turnpike. In other words, it’s exactly where you want to be.

So, welcome to your home-away-from-home – to a blend of friendly faces and easy convenience, with just enough old-world charm, modern elegance, and striking architecture in our hotels, boutique inns, and campgrounds to fuel your inner history buff and please the bargain-lover in you.

Whether you’re making a weekend of it or are here for a longer-haul corporate stay, visiting UNH or in town for a hockey tourney, Dover’s just the kind of place to make you say, “Can we stay a little longer?”

Please see page 60 for a full listing of Dover Accommodations.

The New Hampshire Seacoast is unique in its proximity to both ocean and mountains. Dover, a Seacoast town, is surrounded by beautiful countryside, while still a short drive to Boston or Portland. More than an optimal place to live, this is a beautiful place to call home.

Dover is also at the forefront of addressing the workforce housing crisis. As a forward-thinking city, Dover has changed zoning laws to promote smart growth and ensure the development of housing that meets the needs of its diverse community.

In response, Dover’s diverse housing options reflect our community’s wide architectural influence. Walk along the streets that surround the downtown area, and you’ll take a tour through New Hampshire architecture since the 1700s: Georgian, Colonial, and Victorian homes still stand and historic mills have been transformed into apartments, offering modern living with picturesque views of rivers, waterfalls, and historic bridgework.

The old guard does not stand alone. Historic architecture blends its style with more modern apartments and condominiums throughout our residential areas, especially in coveted downtown locations where Henry Law Park acts as your extended backyard, with easy access to the city’s many cafes, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

New developments like the Cottages at Back River Road bring affordable housing to the forefront. Opened in 2023, this community features 44 cottage-style homes designed to provide attainable options for local renters. The Cottages showcase a modern approach to affordable living while maintaining the charm of the surrounding area, further enhancing Dover’s reputation as a progressive and inclusive city.

Dover also hosts innovative reuse projects, such as The Courthouse, a Chinburg Properties redevelopment. This historic building has been reimagined as a unique residential property offering modern apartment living with a nod to Dover’s architectural heritage. In addition, the mixeduse community of Pointe Place offers residents a blend of upscale apartments, dining, shopping, and services, all in one thoughtfully designed neighborhood. Pointe Place highlights the city’s emphasis on creating vibrant spaces where residents can live, work, and play.

Newer luxury apartment homes feature upscale amenities, such as a fitness center, dog washing station, and rooftop terrace. As greater Dover grows, more new neighborhoods are planned with careful consideration given to preserving the natural environment while still allowing for quality homes.

As of 2024, there are 14,606 households in Dover, which extends to 51.9% owneroccupied housing. The median cost of a single-family home is $430,000.

EDUCATION EDUCATION

AEnrichment, Education & Erudition, Ahead of the Curve

As New Englander John Dewey once said, “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”

Greater Dover is a city dedicated to education and life itself. The Dover School District welcomes children to three excellent elementary schools and a state-of-the-art middle school. The district’s new, cutting-edge high school expands over 310,000 square feet, featuring a stand-alone STEM building, an 850-seat theatre, a library with floor-to-ceiling windows, and a recently expanded technology and regional career center. Extracurriculars shine at the high school’s two gyms, basketball courts, batting cages, sports fields,

culinary kitchen, photography studio, and more. There’s also a solar power array so efficient that it produces surplus electricity.

We are also home to a public charter high school Seacoast Charter , a publicly funded elementary and middle school focused on experiencing education through the arts.

Dover’s private schools include New Hampshire’s #1 private K-12 Portsmouth Christian Academy at Dover. Joining it are several other excellent options, Saint Mary Academy (PreKSeacoast Charter School St. Thomas Aquinas High School Little Tree Education (Montessori preschool). Additional schools nearby include Somersworth’s private Tri-City Christian Academy (PreK-12th Grade) and the public Oyster River High School in Durham.

Quality education, childcare, and support services are something we value highly in Dover. Monarch School of New England serves children 5-21 with significant physical, medical, developmental, behavioral, and emotional disabilities.

Of course, a life of learning is also a life of lifelong learning. Our erudite population is represented by 94% high school graduates, of whom 47% have a higher degree. Dover is just six miles from the University of New Hampshire’s main campus in neighboring Durham, ranked high as one of the safest college towns in the U.S. in 2017 by safewise.com. We’re on the UNH Wildcat Transit route, making for

a convenient commute for both students and university employees. UNH also offers a wider variety of professional development for people in all fields looking to enhance their skillsets.

Our knowledge-hungry population also heads to Great Bay Community College (campus in Portsmouth) for programs in everything from Accounting and Biotechnology to Massage Therapy and Sales & Digital Marketing – a literal A to Z (almost) of higher education and enrichment for Dover residents.

Dover Adult Learning Center of Strafford County is a cornerstone of lifelong learning in our community. This vital resource empowers adults to enhance their skills and improve their lives through a wide range of programs and services. From basic education and high school completion to job training and college preparation, Dover Adult Learning is committed to supporting individuals at every stage of their personal and professional development. The center offers classes in ESL, GED preparation, workforce readiness, and life skills, alongside enrichment courses in subjects like computers, health and wellness, and music. For over 50 years, Dover Adult Learning has been transforming lives, fostering community connections, and helping residents reach their full potential.

LANDSCAPE

FA Diverse Economic Landscape. A Welcoming Place to Work.

From a vibrant and bustling downtown to large corporate campuses, Dover offers many options for companies choosing to put down roots in the area.

This once-mill town today hosts a vibrant and bustling city center populated with small businesses, shops, restaurants, and residential units housed in converted mills, historic buildings, and modern mixed-use facilities. Outside downtown, industrial parks are home to manufacturing and service companies of all types.

The largest city in the Seacoast region and the sixth-largest city in New Hampshire, Dover’s business-friendly community is attractive to businesses of all sizes. Dover is part of one of the most desirable regions in New England and our stable economy makes Dover a popular choice for doing business.

The region continues to attract a younger and highly trained labor force, the talent behind both the small and larger organizations that call Dover home, including WentworthDouglass Hospital. Continued economic stability and workforce growth has also made Dover one of the most desirable regions in New England, fueling both our revitalization efforts and the new Cochecho Waterfront District (see page 52).

Whether you are starting, relocating, or expanding a business, you’ll find an ideal combination of a positive economic climate and outstanding quality of life here in Dover. dover. nh.gov/business-in-dover

NH’s Fastest-Growing City! Dover is the largest city in the Seacoast Region and the sixth-largest city in New Hampshire. And, with a solid growth rate over the last decade, we’re also one of the fastest-growing city in the state! (Source: NHES)

FACTS AT A GLANCE

Average Student to Teacher Ratio by School

SCHOOLS

Workforce

Dover’s workforce is highly educated, skilled, and committed. As of January 2024, Dover’s total labor force is 18,301. Approximately 50% of Dover residents over age 25 are college graduates. As of 2024, 21.8% of Dover residents worked for Dover employers, while more than 14,000 workers come to Dover from surrounding communities.

Additional Facts

Dover unfolds over 28.87 square miles of land and 50 miles of river frontage, at an average elevation of 80 feet above sea level. There are 6 wards and the average number of residents per ward is 5,457. There are over 1,250 fire hydrants and 135.3 miles of public streets. Dover also enjoys 72 diverse recreation sites across the city, totaling around 1,480 acres.

We have full emergency services (police, fire and ambulance); city water and sewer; public and private solid waste disposal (including recycling and commercial compost); and electricity and natural gas through utilities. The City established the Dover Community Power program in 2023 to leverage combined purchasing power to create energy savings for both residents and businesses.

COCHECHO WATERFRONT DISTRICT

Dover has heavily invested in its recreational offerings – some of the best in the state! Its current project: The Cochecho Waterfront District, one of the most ambitious and exciting projects the city has ever dreamed up.

The Waterfront District will feature a thoughtfully designed mix of residential, commercial, and public spaces. Plans include over 35,000 square feet of retail and office space, nearly 300 residential units ranging from townhouses to apartments, and a vibrant public park that integrates seamlessly with the waterfront. Anchored by a stunning waterfront pavilion, the park will offer open spaces for events, concerts, and gatherings, complemented by riverwalk pathways for strolling and enjoying the views.

This district is more than a development – it’s a community-oriented vision for Dover’s future. With sustainability at its core, the project prioritizes environmental stewardship, from flood-resilient designs to riverbank preservation. As Dover’s most ambitious redevelopment to date, the Waterfront District represents the city’s commitment to blending urban vibrancy with natural beauty. Stay tuned!

GETTING HERE AND AROUND

AApproximately an hour south to Boston and an hour north to Portland – and a mere 15 minutes to Portsmouth and the University of New Hampshire – Dover’s location in the region contributes to its status as the fastestgrowing city in New Hampshire.

While Dover may not be the largest city in the state, it is the New Hampshire city with the most public transportation options. Amtrak Downeaster passenger rail service (amtrakdowneaster.com) connects Brunswick, Maine, to Boston with a convenient stop at Dover’s downtown Transportation Center. Three bus companies – COAST Bus (coastbus.org), Wildcat Transit, and C&J Bus Lines (ridecj.com/dover-nh) – also serve the area, offering routes throughout the city, to nearby towns, and to major destinations like Logan Airport and New York City.

Adding to its accessibility, Dover has invested heavily in the Rotary Trailhead at the Dover Transportation Center, making its attractions and amenities more accessible to the public. The Dover Community Trail, with several access points including the Rotary Trailhead, provides a safe, scenic route for walking and biking around the city. The trail connects neighborhoods to downtown, schools, and parks, and showcases Dover’s commitment to enhancing its incredible walkability.

For drivers, downtown Dover is extremely convenient. Ample parking is available on the street, in public garages (such as the Orchard Street parking garage), and in city-owned parking lots. EV charging stations are located downtown, in public garages, and at locations like Silver Square, just off Route 16/Spaulding Turnpike.

Dover’s proximity to several airports – including ManchesterBoston Regional Airport, Pease International Airport, the Portland International Jetport, and Boston’s Logan International Airport – makes it an ideal hub for business or leisure travel. It is also within easy reach of the Pease International Trade Zone and the Port of Portsmouth, providing additional opportunities for travel and commerce.

Connected to Almost Everywhere NH

Dover’s connected location makes it an ideal jumping-off point for New Hampshire’s recreational treasures. Within a short drive or ride, you can:

• Explore the NH Lakes District, perfect for boating, fishing, and waterfront relaxation.

• Hit the Slopes at nearby ski resorts during winter months.

• Take in Fall Foliage on scenic drives and hiking trails during autumn.

• Visit Beaches, including the Seacoast’s sandy shores, for a sunny summer escape.

With Dover’s exceptional transportation network and prime location, these attractions – and so much more –are all within reach.
