Explore KCK’s vibrant cultures on the KCK Legacy Trail.

Latino Journey

The self-guided KCK Legacy Trail features multiple journeys honoring KCK's diverse history and cultures including Latino, Eastern European, Black, Indigenous Peoples, and Modern Immigrant. Through your journey, you'll discover the people, stories and legacies of Kansas City, Kansas.

Explore the culture and heritage of one of KCK’s largest and most vibrant communities told through art, passionate leaders, faith and triumph after tragedy.

Marialexa Sanoja

Sharing the railroad history in Kansas City, Kansas, is very important. The railroad played a significant role in shaping the city’s development and identity. Acknowledging this history helps preserve the cultural heritage of the area. Highlighting the contributions of the Hispanic community emphasizes inclusivity and recognizes the diverse groups that have shaped Kansas City’s history. This fosters a sense of belonging and pride among community members.

Eastern European Journey

Centered in the Strawberry Hill neighborhood, this Journey tells a tale of hard work, family, churches and long-standing traditions still alive and well today.

Alina Dokshakova

In immigration, it is very important not to stop feeling a connection with the homeland. Each of us has a so-called cultural code - these are unique cultural features inherited from our ancestors. These features are manifested in our religious, political, social, taste preferences ... Therefore, it is great if in a new place you have the opportunity to try dishes of your national cuisine, for example, Croatian sausages from Krizman’s Sausage. This is a family production that passes on a unique recipe from generation to generation. In Ukraine, where I come from, there is also a long history of producing meat products with an authentic recipe.

Black Journey

Perseverance and hope are woven throughout this Journey, which includes some of KCK’s most historically significant sites, like Quindaro, once a free point of entry on The Underground Railroad.

Krystal McFeders

The Quindaro Ruins Overlook is a place of reflection for me. As a young girl growing up in Wyandotte County, I often heard many stories about the significance of the Quindaro Townsite. The ruins stand as a symbol of hope, representing the perseverance of those who fought for their freedom and dignity in the face of unimaginable challenges. The townsite was once a crucial stop on the Underground Railroad, providing a refuge for those escaping slavery. The overlook serves as a reminder of our painful history and highlights the resilient spirit and collaboration of the people who made it a place of greatness and community. The Quindaro Ruins and the Overlook are gems that deserve our respect, our remembrance, and our ongoing commitment to ensure that the stories and legacy are never lost!

Modern Immigrant Journey

An inspiring testimony to the modern-day diversity of our city, where more than 65 languages are spoken among people who have come to call KCK home in the last 50 years.

Imani Lemon

Traversing KCK, you’ll feel rocky, hilly terrain, beneath your feet, just like the early immigrants, who paved the way before us. The trail winds through scenic views, each stop telling a story of individuals who faced steep obstacles yet remained optimistic about the promise of Midwestern life! Walking this trail is an invitation to feel the welcoming and determined spirit of Kansas, in every step!

Indigenous Peoples Journey

Hear the stories of KCK’s Indigenous tribes, from the Hopewell, the area’s earliest inhabitants, to the Delaware and Wyandot, who after being uprooted from their native lands played a pivotal role in founding our city.

Chief Judith Manthe of the Wyandot Nation of Kansas

The story of the Conley sisters is a story that needs to be told!! Lyda Conley, the first indigenous women to earn a law degree and the first to go all the way to the Supreme Court in Washington DC to fight to protect the Wyandot National Cemetery (originally The Huron Cemetery). The three sisters - Lyda, Ida, and Helena moved into a 6’ x 8’ hut and lived there day and night for two solid years to protect the graves of their families and ancestors. Through hardship of cold and heat and threat of removal – Even being arrested and put in jail – these Wyandot Women Warriors succeeded in getting attention from the East Coast to the West Coast and holding off all who tried to destroy this Sacred Site.

Kansas City, Kansas (KCK) is a diverse city shaped by its rich history, vibrant immigrant communities and deep cultural roots. As a major hub for industry, transportation and trade, KCK has long attracted people from all walks of life seeking opportunity and a better future. The city is home to a significant Latino population, strong African American heritage, Indigenous population, and growing Asian and Eastern European

communities each contributing to its dynamic cultural landscape. Historic neighborhoods like Armourdale, Strawberry Hill and the Northeast reflect the city’s immigrant past, while modern developments continue to bring new cultures and influences. This blend of traditions, languages, and backgrounds makes KCK a place where diversity is not just present but celebrated, creating a strong sense of unity among its residents.

Pamela Rowe, co-owner and winemaker of Rowe Ridge Vineyard & Winery, began her journey in 2015 alongside her husband, Marc, by planting their first grapevines. The couple “retired” 15 years ago to focus on their vineyard and winery. At the time, western Wyandotte County was largely rural, and they never anticipated the rapid growth and development that would transform the area over the past 25 years.

What is unique about West KCK?

West KCK uniquely blends rural, residential, and retail spaces within minutes of each other. Its transformation from farmland to thriving neighborhoods is fueled by easy highway access. Rowe Ridge Vineyard & Winery embraces its agricultural roots while being just minutes from Legends shopping and horse farms, making it a true “hidden gem.”

KCK as a whole is a city of contrasts—historic traditions in the east and rapid growth in the west. The American Royal’s move westward adds to the city’s evolving landscape. While immigrant communities have changed, KCK remains welcoming and diverse. Visitors and locals alike are often surprised by the city’s rich food scene, entertainment, and hidden treasures, making it a destination full of discovery.

South

As a Kansas City native, Richard Clifton now spends most of his time in Rosedale as a co-owner of Three Bees Pottery & Coffee. They purchased the business to preserve its unique charm and continue sharing Talavera pottery, Mexican coffee culture and authentic tamales with KCK. Their goal is to be a go-to spot for regional tamales, and nothing is more rewarding than when a customer says they taste just like home!

Why do you think South KCK is unique?

South KCK is a close-knit community with a big city feel, offering a rich blend of culture and diverse cuisine. With so many incredible spots to explore, even picking a favorite tortilla place is a challenge. KCK is defined by its people—their strong sense of community, dedication to local businesses and commitment to preserving traditions. It’s a city where one-ofa-kind experiences thrive, and where the past and future come together to create something truly special.

This diverse area, home to the neighborhoods of Turner, Rosedale, Argentine, and Armourdale, played a key role in shaping one of Kansas City’s first Hispanic communities.

HIDDEN GEMS

Indulge in an oversized tenderloin sandwich at Christy’s Tasty Queen, a beloved drivein diner that has been serving up nostalgic flavors for over 40 years.
