Welcome
Yelverton Golf Club is situated in one of the most scenic parts of Devon in the south west of England. It is surrounded by Dartmoor National Park with stunning views across the park and into Cornwall.
We are a well-supported club with a thriving and diverse membership, ranging from full playing member to social member and we are always ready to welcome visitors, guests and societies to enjoy both our course and clubhouse hospitality.
History
Yelverton Gold Club was formed in 1904 with a nine-hole course extending south-west from the present clubhouse. In 1910/11 a further nine holes were constructed to the west of Golf Links Road, on what became known as the Higher Down Course.
During World War One half of that course was returned to agricultural use in aid of the war effort and then, at the end of the war, an agreement was signed between the club, the commoners and the landowner (Sir Henry Lopes) for the ‘laying out and use for play of an 18-hole golf course’ on Roborough Down.
The land which the course roams was once owned by Sir Francis Drake and today is owned by the Lopes family as part of the Maristow Estate.
Herbert Fowler (who had already established a reputation with his designs of courses such as Walton Heath and Royal North Devon) was commissioned to design the layout and that gradually became the course that is in use now. The current clubhouse was opened in 1926.
Herbert Fowler’s design for the course was aided significantly by the existing presence on Roborough Down of some notable features, the Devonport Leat (built in 1792) that scythed its way through the terrain; and ancient hollows and mounds left over from open-cast mining in Elizabethan times.
Fowler was able to capitalise on those features by incorporating them into his design.
The Course
Yelverton is a delightful moorland course, designed in 1904 by Herbert Fowler and completed in 1923 when the 18-hole course was opened. Between 1934 and 1936 James Braid redesigned a few holes on the back nine, complementing Fowler’s initial design, and the course has matured and developed since then.
The course has outstanding views across Dartmoor and over Cornwall, and both Fowler and Braid incorporated some of the old mine workings as natural hazards to challenge golfers of all standards. The course has played host to many top-quality competitions, including the EGU Men’s Senior Amateur Championships in 2006.
• Hole 1 / par three •
Pro’s tip – A challenging opening hole! At the best part of 200 yards, the centre of the green is all you need.
• Hole 2 / par four •
Pro’s tip – A visually intimidating tee shot. A green which tilts right-to-left; favour the right side of the green on your approach and leave a back pin position well alone.
• Hole 3 / par four •
Pro’s tip – A great risk or reward hole. Try to drive the green and avoid the bunker, or lay-up. A two-tiered green which slopes leftto-right; leave your ball below the flag with an uphill putt.
• Hole 4 / par four •
Pro’s tip – A blind tee shot with a generous fairway but don’t let your guard down! Approach shot to a two-tiered green, with
the sensible play being the middle-of-thegreen but on the correct tier.
• Hole 5 / par five •
Pro’s tip – A great birdie opportunity. The hole presents itself as you see it. Semi-hidden bunkers either side of the green lends itself to an approach centre of the green.
• Hole 6 / par three •
Pro’s tip – A fantastic short par three! A
subtle bowl-shaped green receives the ball well. Very easy to get lured into a left pin position but all that is needed is a middle of the green shot.
• Hole 7 / par four •
Pro’s tip – One of our longer par fours with a well-placed bunker pushing you towards the gorse line. A green which slopes backto-front requires an approach to be short of the flag.
The Course
• Hole 8 / par five •
Pro’s tip – A well-positioned leat dictates either a lay-up or entices the longer hitters to take it on. Pay attention to the flag position as the green slopes away from you. Putting back up to the flag makes birdies more achievable.
• Hole 9 / par four •
Pro’s tip – Positional play is required to set up a full shot to the green. Hidden grass bunkers down the right side of the fairway will catch an errant tee shot, so favour the left side.
• Hole 10 / par four •
Pro’s tip – A challenging par four to start the back nine, and also the start of the ‘murder mile’! Drive to the left of the fairway. Subtle mounding in front of the green requires a higher flighted approach shot.
The undulating green demands a shot to its centre. Take par and run!
• Hole 11 / par five •
Pro’s tip – A well placed, blind leat can catch a miss-hit tee shot, especially from the white tees. The second shot requires you to thread your ball through the fairway bunkers. Hidden bunkers either side of the green await a slightly awry approach shot.
• Hole 12 / par three •
Pro’s tip – Our signature hole! A beautiful, challenging mid-range par three. A well bunkered green requires a nicely flighted iron shot to hold the green and avoid all the bunkers.
• Hole 13 / par four •
Pro’s tip – A beast of a par four and the end of the ‘murder mile’. To anyone playing this for the first time, take a look at the crater before the green as you pass it from the second tee. You might decide to lay up with your second shot.
• Hole 14 / par four •
Pro’s tip – A short dog leg left. A positional play towards the marker post is required; however, the green can be reached with a brave line over the left trees. Not a straightforward approach. You can run the ball in or carry the ball all the way.
• Hole 15 / par four •
Pro’s tip – A straightforward tee shot is shortly followed by a complex green! In the summer months you dare not
get above the flag as the green slopes generously back-to-front.
The safe play is to leave yourself short of the flag.
HOLE 11
The Course
• Hole 16 / par four •
Pro’s tip – A positional tee shot is required, slightly right of the market post. It is possible to run out of fairway into the gorse-filled hollows, so choose your club wisely! A second shot to a bowl-shaped green favouring the right half. All the trouble and hidden bunkers are at the front of the green.
• Hole 17 / par three •
Pro’s tip – A superb long par three. The leat which runs the length of the hole provides a lovely visual, but also challenging, feature. Not an easy up and down from either side of this green so a ball coming to rest just off the front of the green is the best possible miss.
• Hole 18 / par four •
Pro’s tip – A slightly cambered fairway left-to-right propels the ball towards a very well-positioned bunker. One of our famous craters is awaiting any miss-hit shots which fall short of the green. If you see a red flag position, treat it as a yellow.
