Welcome Founded in 1910, West Hove Golf Club was originally situated off the Old Shoreham Road on the boundary between Hove and Portslade.

However, in 1991, the construction of the Brighton by-pass meant the Club had to relocate.

IIt can now be found off the A27 trunk road at the Hangleton Interchange. The new Clubhouse and golf course are situated in the midst of the South Downs, in an area of outstanding natural beauty, and from 2010 they have been included within the South Downs National Park.

The 18-hole golf course is laid out over rolling chalk downland and is a challenging par 70. Being in one of the warmest and driest parts of the country, coupled with the chalk terrain, the course is almost always playable.

The superb modern clubhouse caters for wedding receptions, private functions and business seminars. The first class restaurant and bar both have panoramic views over the course.

West Hove has its own very popular 18-bay driving range, the only one in Brighton & Hove, which is open to the public. Tuition from PGA-qualified staff is available for individuals or groups every day.

Golfers of all ages and abilities are most welcome at this friendly Club and the Management, Club Professional and Members all look forward to your visit.

In 2006 West Hove was proud to be the first Club in Sussex, and only the second in the country, to be awarded the prestigious GolfMark accreditation. This is a national scheme that identifies and recognises junior and beginner-friendly golf facilities.

The Course Right from the first tee, the course at West Hove will ask questions of your golfing skills and will challenge your determination to improve still further.

The 18-hole, par-70, course is set within the South Downs National Park, in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It has magnificent views of the Downs and English Channel and was the inspired design of Hawtree & Son, the renowned golf course architects.

It measures 6,253 yards from the white championship tees, 6,022 from the yellow visitors’ tees and 5,309 yards from the red ladies’ tees. The course also boasts the 617-yard par-5 18th hole which we claim to be the longest in Sussex, if not the country.

The Standard Scratch Score from both white tees and red tees is actually one higher than par, an indication of how good a test of golf West Hove provides even to the most accomplished player.

The course, constructed to USPGA standards, has chalk-based fairways and welldrained greens and is complemented by a computerised irrigation system which allows it to remain open throughout the year.

Tour the Course Make the most of your trip to West Hove by learning about some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow our course tour courtesy of Graeme Crompton, our PGA Head Professional.

Hole 1, 341 yards, par 4 A gentle opening hole. Avoiding the bunkers on either side of the fairway will set up a mid/short iron to the green. The second shot always plays longer than it looks so take more club than you think.

Hole 2, 393 yards, par 4 One of the toughest holes on the course. A long uphill par 4 with danger everywhere off the tee. Avoiding the gorse on the corner of the left to right dogleg you will set up for a long second to a small green guarded by two bunkers.

Hole 3, 193 yards, par 3 The first of the par 3s is guarded by bunkers on the left and right of the green. A lovely drop hole that can play anything from an 8 iron to a driver depending on the wind. Playing to the heart of the green is the best advice.

Hole 4, 298 yards, par 4 A driveable par 4 for the longer hitters, when conditions prevail. Otherwise, lay up of the deep pot bunkers in the fairway to leave a short iron to the green. Do not miss the green left, as saving par will be difficult from here.

Hole 5, 479 yards, par 5 A great looking hole from the tee. This long sweeping dogleg hole slowly rises to one of the highest points on the course. An accurate drive is required to avoid the trio of bunkers on the left and trees beyond. Only the longest off the tee will attempt to go for the green in two. Beware of any front, left, hole location on this deceptively fast green.

Hole 6, 484 yards, par 4 This long par 4 turns south and the general lie of the land is from left to right. There are magnificent views across Hove to the sea and the chimney of the power station acts as an excellent marker. A good drive will leave a long second shot to a large green with bunkers short and right to avoid. For those fortunate enough to reach in two, it leaves a hard two-putt for par.

Tour the Course (continued) Hole 7, 156 yards, par 3 This drop hole affords wonderful views over the byre to the clubhouse and the sea beyond. The shortest hole on the course but not necessarily the easiest. The prevailing wind against often demands a much longer iron than its distance implies.

Beware of the strategically placed bunkers!

Hole 8, 337 yards, par 4 A short but difficult right to left dogleg par 4. An iron off the tee sets up a short iron for birdie. The courageous will risk the trouble and the out of bounds on the left to go for the green when conditions allow.

Hole 9, 387 yards, par 4 This hole returns back to the clubhouse. Negotiate the two fairway bunkers to leave a mid to short iron into the green. The green is deceptively long so take care in choosing the right club or three putts are on the cards.

Hole 10, 313 yards, par 4 This right to left dogleg requires 2 accurate shots. Avoiding the cross bunkers sets up a fairly short approach but getting close to the flag is difficult as you cannot always see the bottom of the flag.

Hole 11, 318 yards, par 4 A short but hazardous hole. A blind tee shot to a sunken fairway. If all the bunkers are avoided then a short pitch to the green will give a birdie opportunity. The hole often entices the long hitters to go for it, but beware!

Hole 13, 191 yards, par 3 A tough par 3, where a long iron or fairway wood is required to reach a fairly small target. Beware of the hidden greenside potbunker on the right and out of bounds just over the green.

Hole 12, 454 yards, par 4 A long difficult hole with an undulating fairway, which will swing the ball towards a well placed bunker on the right side of the fairway. A slight dogleg left means hugging the left side to shorten the second shot. Keep your second shot down the left side for the best chance of reaching in two, otherwise the sloping land will gather the ball to the right. A large green, so a three-putt is always possible.

Hole 14, 310 yards, par 4 A good drive uphill from the tee avoiding the hazard in the fairway will set up your second to an elevated green. Ensure you are aware of the flag colour, as it will assist club selection.

Tour the Course (continued) Hole 15, 381 yards, par 4 A narrow fairway that’s hard to find. A drive long enough will give a clear view of the green otherwise you’re faced with a blind second shot. Two bunkers guard the green and beware the deep bunker on the right. A par is always a good score here!

Hole 16, 394 yards, par 4 A long narrow dogleg left with a camber on the fairway that slopes left to right. Be sure to stay on the landing area, sometimes with a long iron off the tee to leave a long iron into the green. Anything to the right down the length of this hole and you’re most likely to lose your ball. A hard green to find in two that will often leave a lengthy putt.

Hole 17, 207 yards, par 3 The last of the short holes but probably the toughest. A long iron or fairway wood aimed at the left side of the green is the best policy here. Any shot right will leave a tough up and down to save par. The green has many subtle slopes, so look carefully.

Hole 18, 617 yards, par 5 West Hove’s signature hole. Currently the longest hole in Sussex and a tough finish to the round. A drive avoiding the right-hand fairway bunker will leave another long second to lay up of the road. Even the biggest hitters rarely have a chance to get on in two. The third shot will be a mid/short iron into a green that has out of bounds all around. A par here is an excellent score.

Professional and the Pro Shop Graeme Crompton, our PGA Head Professional, joined the Club in March 2010. He has created a well-stocked shop and is able to get most of your requirements at competitive prices - so if you don’t see what you want, please ask.

The shop has a good range of golf clothing, golf clubs, golf bags, golf balls and other related items. Graeme and his staff are very keen to help you in your choice of purchase - give them the opportunity to match or even beat a price before buying elsewhere.

Graeme is also very enthusiastic about custom fitting, which is where rather than buy a set of clubs off the shelf, you are measured for a set specific to your physique and golf swing.

He says the only bad thing, though, is that you will no longer be able to blame your clubs once you’ve been custom-fitted!

West Hove offers custom fitting with Mizuno, Benross Golf and Titleist and fitting is free of charge so please book an appointment with Graeme in the Pro Shop.

And, of course, the Pro Shop is where members and visitors can book their tee times and where you can get your spikes replaced or your clubs re-gripped, hire a trolley or buggy and purchase tokens for our 18-bay driving range.

Beyond your expectations

Driving Range and Practice Facilities West Hove Golf Club has the only 18-bay driving range open to the public within the Brighton & Hove conurbation.

If you would like to hone your skills please come along any day between 8am and dusk and purchase a token for the ball dispenser. These are available from the Pro Shop and also from the Bar on summer evenings.

Other practice areas available for use by West Hove members only include chipping and pitching greens at the far end of the range with practice bunkers, perfect for working on those shot-saving up-anddowns from greenside bunkers.

There is a very good quality putting green close to the first tee and a practice net which is perfect for warming up before a round if you are running a little short of time.

The range is a particularly valuable asset to those who are learning the game and who cannot get to play on a golf course. And what’s more, you don’t have to collect your balls afterwards! There is also the option to hit off turf all year round, which is less forgiving than artificial surfaces and gives far more realistic feedback on how you are truly striking the ball.

Becoming a Member West Hove has plenty to offer the discerning golfer, with memberships available in several categories designed to suit all requirements. Now is a particularly good time to consider becoming a member as the joining fee has currently been temporarily waived.

We pride ourselves on having an active membership with a full schedule of competitions for men, ladies, seniors and juniors aimed at players of all standards.

There is also a busy and varied social calendar with events for all of the family and a special social membership available to those who just wish to enjoy use of our splendid clubhouse throughout the week.

Competitive golfers can achieve an official CONGU handicap recognised worldwide, and play in regular competitions both with their fellow members and against other clubs. Seven-day and fiveday membership options are available and we also offer Country and International Memberships.

Young adults benefit from preferential rates here at West Hove, while still enjoying all the benefits of full membership for just a fraction of the cost.

Intermediate memberships up to the age of 22 help the transition from child member to full membership and we offer attractive rates to those in full-time education. The rates are even more attractive to junior golfers.

For those considering taking up golf or have a flexible working pattern we offer an Academy Membership for new players with lessons available from our PGA Professional Staff.

This is a stepping-stone to full 5 or 7-day membership and allows full use of the clubhouse all week and use of the golf course after 3pm in summer and 1.30pm in winter. Academy Members can obtain an official Club Handicap and play in our midweek Open Medal and Stableford Competitions.

Members’ Golf Men’s Section This section is by far the largest within the Club with members’ handicaps varying from ‘plus two’ to 28.

The Match & Handicap Committee organise well over 100 competitions each year allowing members of all abilities to compete for prizes and to maintain an official handicap. These competitions take many forms including medal play, Stableford, bogey and both singles and doubles matchplay.

There are also many inter-club competitions, the most prestigious being the Sussex County Inter Club Scratch Matchplay Championship which determines the champion club in Sussex which we were very proud to have won in 2002. In addition there are many annual Society competitions such as those organised by the Brighton & District Golfing Society. Members of differing abilities are chosen to represent the Club and there is a lot of competition for places.

All of these events are very well supported but probably the best-loved events are All of these events are very well supported but probably the best-loved events are the Texas Scrambles usually in support of the Club Captain’s charities.

Ladies’ Section Lady members at West Hove have the same rights as the men. They are a very friendly, well organised section and have numerous competitions throughout the year to suit all playing abilities.

They have a reserved tee time every Tuesday for both competitive and friendly games. They can of course play on other days, but for those who cannot play in the Tuesday competitions there are special arrangements for them to partake in qualifying competitions on a Saturday. The Ladies Section has a number of keen bridge players and these sessions have become so popular that they have organised a second session each week. They are also responsible for organising a large number of social events each year.

Members’ Golf (continued) Seniors’ Section

Mixed Section

This section represents about eighty men aged 55 and over who pay a nominal annual subscription for the privilege. They too have a well organised set-up with reserved tee times every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning.

The increasing number of members who have introduced their partners to the Club has meant that this section is steadily growing. This is probably the least formal of the sections and includes a lot of ‘friendly’ golf. Mixed Golf has become very popular and well supported. There are, of course, those without partners or those who have non-playing partners. They are catered for by a booking system.

The section organises regular monthly medal and Stableford competitions but they are geared towards the warmer months. There are many other competitions including singles and pairs knock-out events but by far the most popular events are the regular annual friendly matches against other local Sussex clubs. As with the other sections within the Club they elect their own captain and other officials each year.

Many of the events are held over Bank Holiday weekends and are followed by an evening meal and prize presentation. Non-playing partners regularly turn up for these suppers as they are very sociable.

The most popular event has been the annual golf holiday to France or Turkey.

Juniors West Hove boasts a Junior Section that is said to be one of the best in the county.

Juniors may join and remain until they are 18, but there is often a waiting list because the section has become so popular and successful. Some of our juniors have significantly reduced their handicaps and have been chosen to receive county and national training. Others have been so good they have turned professional and one ex-junior is now attending a four-year golf scholarship at an American university.

The Junior Section has 12 monthly medal and Stableford competitions each year together with other competitions aimed primarily at the school holidays. In recent years the Club has won the prestigious Junior Brighton League on four occasions and introduced an exceedingly popular Junior Open.

West Hove take their responsibilities towards children very seriously hence the Club being the first in Sussex, and only the second in the country, to be awarded the prestigious GolfMark. This is a national scheme that identifies and recognises junior and beginner-friendly golf facilities.

Our Junior Handbook opens with the following mission statement:

“The aim of our Junior Section is to provide a fun and safe working environment for children 9 to 17 years of age, and to give them golfing skills that can be enjoyed for the rest of their lives.�

This is not just meaningless rhetoric, at West Hove we are true to our word.

Information for Visitors Visitors are warmly welcomed at the club throughout the year, at any time during the week subject to course availability and at weekends after midday. Tee times can be booked through the Pro Shop, or online via the link on our club website.

Special rates are available to holders of the Sussex Golf Union County Card, to guests of members and to juniors, as well as to those able to play later in the day when the course is at its quietest. Twilight rates are applicable after 3pm from April to October and after 1pm for the remainder of the year.

We have a dedicated visitors’ changing room with toilet and shower facilities. We are a fairly relaxed club, but we do ask visitors to respect our rules and standard golfing etiquette to ensure their visit runs as smoothly as possible. In common with other clubs we do request that visitors abide by our dress code both on the course and in the clubhouse, specific details of which can be found on our website, www.westhovegolfclub.co.uk Although handicap certificates are not mandatory, we do prefer golfers to be of a sufficient standard for them to be able to enjoy their round and for them not to inconvenience other players when out on the course.

Societies Golf societies are always assured of a warm welcome at West Hove Golf Club. We pride ourselves on the care and attention we give to ensure your day runs smoothly. Clubhouse “This is one of the most magnificent and up-to-date of its kind to be found anywhere, and is a delightful structure of wattle and daub, with brown outside beams giving an artistic effect… and no expense has been spared in providing every modern requirement and comfort for the golfer.”

Since 1991 there has been a continual programme of improvement to the clubhouse. This includes a total refurbishment of the ground floor changing rooms and on the first floor the development of the Wayfarers’ Terrace and the provision of our balcony restaurant which affords splendid panoramic views over the golf course.

These were the words used to describe our original clubhouse which opened in 1910.

The second floor now includes the General Manager’s office, the Match & Handicap office, our Committee Room and the Keith Haste Suite which may be hired for conferences and private meetings.

Some 81 years later, following the development of the A27 Brighton bypass over our old course, West Hove opened another ‘most magnificent and up-to-date’ clubhouse. This time it has been built of brick, with flint walls around the central atrium which has a rounded roof to reflect the rolling landscape of the South Downs.

A warm welcome always awaits in The Lounge Bar, where you can relax with a drink from our wide selection of wines, spirits and excellent range of draught and bottled beers. The Wayfarers’ Terrace overlooking the 18th green is an absolute must, especially on a sunny day.+

Restaurant and Catering The first class restaurant at West Hove Golf Club caters for all tastes and occasions, including business meetings, private parties and wedding receptions.

The restaurant itself is set in an imposing room and can accommodate up to 120 people. The balcony area affords wonderful uninterrupted views across the golf course. However, for those who require a smaller private room, for example a golf society, the Keith Haste Suite is particularly suitable.

Breakfasts may be consumed all morning, every day of the week, and snacks, sandwiches, baguettes and other light bites are also available. Lunches may be ordered from our menu, or you may wish to choose from our blackboard which lists “Delicious Daily Specials”. Opening hours vary depending on the time of year and are listed on our website.

The catering team have earned a reputation for their Sunday lunches – book in advance to avoid disappointment – and the quality of the cuisine served at special evening dinners. If you have any particular requirements please contact them as they are keen to make your visit special.

Conferences and Meetings West Hove Golf Club is the perfect setting for a business meeting, conference or seminar. We can cater for small or large groups in the Keith Haste Suite. Corporate Opportunities The Club is very pleased to provide a limited number of Corporate Golf Passes to small and medium-sized local businesses on a first come, first served basis.

These are perfect for team building purposes or for entertaining clients.

The main terms and conditions are as follows: • A vailable only to small or medium-sized businesses upon submission of the appropriate application form • Two ‘lead players’ must be nominated – and one must be present on every visit • A maximum of 8 rounds of golf each month for a 24-month term

• Tee bookings may only be made up to 5 days in advance - via the Pro Shop • Tee times restricted to after 10am on weekdays and after 1pm at weekends and Bank Holidays • Maximum of 4 players (i.e. 4 rounds) at any one time • Unused rounds in any month cannot be carried forward • Membership is not conferred – but Club Rules, etiquette and our Dress Code must be observed An application form can be downloaded from our website. How to Find Us From the North If travelling south on the A23, at the Mill Road roundabout on the Brighton outskirts, take the first exit onto the A27 and follow signposts to Worthing. Continue travelling westwards along the A27 for nearly 3 miles and bear left at the Hangleton Interchange exit which is signposted Shoreham/Portslade & Southwick. At the end of the slip road, turn right at the mini-roundabout, going beneath the A27 flyover, and the clubhouse entrance is straight ahead, off the second mini-roundabout.

From the East Make your way to the A27 and west of Brighton & Hove bear left at the Hangleton Interchange exit which is signposted Shoreham/Portslade & Southwick. At the end of the slip road, turn right at the mini-roundabout, going beneath the A27 flyover, and the clubhouse entrance is straight ahead, off the second mini-roundabout.

From the West Travelling eastwards along the A27 we are at the Hangleton Interchange exit which is the first exit after the Southwick Tunnel and signposted Shoreham Harbour.

WHGC is at the left exit at the mini-roundabout at the bottom of the slip road.

From the South Travelling along the A259 seafront road, turn into Boundary Road/ Station Road (B2194) which is at the western boundary of Hove and continue north. After the level crossing, turn left at the traffic lights, then immediately turn right at the next traffic lights on to the A293 link road and continue driving north over the miniroundabouts. The entrance to West Hove Golf Club is at the far end of the A293 link road at its junction with the A27 Shoreham/Brighton by-pass.

Public Transport The nearest railway station is at Hove, which is about two miles, or a ten-minute taxi ride away. Frequent services run east to Brighton and beyond, west to Worthing and Southampton and north to London.
