HISTORY

TidworthGarrison Golf Club is a private members club, owing its foundation to the military garrison; ties with which are now mainly historical.

In 1895 the War Department purchased large tracts of land all around Salisbury Plain including Tedworth House. 2,500 acres of the Estate was developed to form a major military training area with the adjoining garrisons of Warminster, Larkhill, Bulford and Tidworth.

The construction of Tidworth Garrison, with its eight separate barracks set in a crescent shape between the village and the Plain, took place between 1900 and 1910. As barracks were occupied the requirement for sporting facilities became apparent. Among the facilities requested, was a golf course for the use of officers.

The intention to build a golf course was lodged with the R&A in 1904 and the Golf Club was founded in 1908, when a 9 hole Course was built on training land on the western edge of Tidworth.

A wooden barrack hut was installed as a Clubhouse and remained in use until 1960 when the existing Clubhouse was constructed. The Clubhouse was slightly extended in the early eighties but substantial improvements were made in time for the club’s Centenary in 2008.

Detailed knowledge of the history of the early years of the Club is limited as the post of Honorary Secretary was held by a series of transient officers until 31 December 1964 when the first paid Secretary was appointed.

HISTORY

The course was extended to 18 holes between 1919-1921. It remained open for play during World War II despite there being a vast influx of British, Empire and US troops in Tidworth. The Ladies Section, originally known as a Ladies Club, was formed in 1926.

What has developed is a lovely, tree lined, downland course, providing a good test of golfing skill. The course has springy turf on a chalk base, which drains so well that it rarely (if ever) closes - even in deep winter. Renowned course designers J. Hamilton Stutt and Donald Steel have both commented that the original designers used the topography of the terrain very well. The legendary AD (Bobby) Locke, who played an exhibition match in 1955, was equally complimentary.

For the first 50 years the membership of the Club was around 300, almost exclusively military officers and their families. Progressively, all ranks and an increasing number of civilian members joined what had become a private members club, raising the total membership to the present level of over 650. The Club became a Limited Company in 1999, but continues to lease the land from the MOD.

FLORA & FAUNA

Besidessome rare and beautiful wild flowers we have roe deer and muntjak, buzzards and owls, stoats and foxes – just to mention a few of the birds and animals that can be seen around the course. Yet few people are aware that Tidworth Garrison Golf Club may be amongst the most important of the 600 or so areas of chalk grassland monitored by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust Sites Project, and that it is probably in the top five most bio-diverse courses in the county.

This is because it was constructed in 1908 before the advent of chemical fertilisers, herbicides and heavy ploughing machinery. As a result, it retains large areas of high quality Lowland Calcareous Grassland. It has been estimated that in excess of 90% of this type of habitat has been lost in the UK since 1945 and that Wiltshire

retains perhaps half of all that is left and more significantly, maybe more than a third of the surviving resource worldwide.

Amongst these the International Union for the Conservation of Nature regards White Helleborine (Cephalanthera damasonium) as vulnerable to extinction! The White Helleborine, a beautiful orchid, has been found thriving in the shade of the beech trees, as well as in open areas of our rough. Purple Milk-Vetch and Field Fleawort are regarded as endangered and the Fleawort, as well as the Bastard Toadflax, are considered scarce in the UK. In addition, many types of butterflies, most species of which are in decline as a result of habitat loss, have been observed feeding on the grasslands around the course.

FLORA & FAUNA

The county has a special responsibility towards the preservation of such sites and this habitat is listed as a priority in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and protected under an EU Habitats Directive because it is inherently very bio-diverse, having arisen through a long tradition of low-intensity management and once lost cannot be easily recreated.

Tidworth Garrison golf course is important because it pre-dates the modern intensification of agriculture and most of the land has been neither ploughed nor intensively fertilised. This makes it special and worthy of protection and celebration. As a club we recognise we have a responsibility to protect this special place.

This can be achieved by controlling the encroaching scrub and young trees, especially Pines, Sycamore, Hawthorn and Blackthorn, which, over time, create deep shade and suppress plant diversity. Along with occasional management of the rough areas this will ensure a continued supply of nectar, pollen and sap for the many butterflies, bees, grasshoppers, flies and beetles, which in turn feed the bats and birds which live around the course. We feel it is vitally important to continue protecting what we are fortunate to have for future generations to enjoy.

ABOUT THE COURSE

Donald Steel M.A, Golf Course Architect writes: Gene Littler, a celebrated US Open champion, whose beautiful method made the game look wonderfully simple, defined golf in terms of the swing as “a game of constant adjustment”. The same is undoubtedly true of our course which, for 100 years, has had to adjust to the changes brought about by improving equipment technology.

We are inclined to believe that this is a relatively modern fashion. Certainly the last ten or fifteen years have brought about more dramatic change than over any comparable period in the game’s history. However, in relation to Tidworth, they are not as relevant as elsewhere. Tidworth’s natural defences – the wind and the slope of the land – have not altered a scrap in a hundred years.

This explains why there are so few fairway bunkers – the slope dictates much of the strategy and positional play.

Bunkers are the one artificially introduced element on any golf course and, in an area of outstanding beauty such as Tidworth, the original golf course architect (H.S. Colt) felt they should be underplayed rather than overplayed.

“A natural back-up to Tidworth’s defences is the growth of rough and I feel Tidworth are sensibly aiming at a balance whereby there is a punishment for missing a fairway, but not to the extent that a player cannot find or play his or her ball”.

COURSE TOUR

Hole 1

Par 4, 324 yards

Remaining true to one of Harry Colt’s fundamentals, the first is a gentle opening hole, easing you into your round. A par 4 of 324 yards; the hole gently increases in elevation, whilst the green is heavily guarded with two bunkers running the full length of the green.

Hole 2

Par 3, 162 yards

The second hole is a thoroughly good short hole, playing slightly uphill, thus obscuring the bottom of the flag and making club selection tricky.

Hole 3

Par 4, 394 yards

A medium-length par 4, the tee shot is not the easiest. However the green is a large target and the bunkers are not too penal. Club selection for the approach shot is crucial; the raised front will reject anything that is not well struck.

Hole descriptions kindly provided by Donald Steel M.A, Golf Course Architect and Writer.
(HOLE BY HOLE)

COURSE TOUR

Hole 4

Par 4, 451 yards

One of Tidworth’s best; a long par four where the second shot is a demanding one. Even after the putting surface has been found, a par is no certainty; the green has many borrows, some subtle, others less so.

Hole 5

Par 3, 160 yards

Tidworth is fortunate in the variety of directions in which its par 3’s point and the 5th is a lovely example of a medium-length short hole. The green falls away on the front and left side, with a grass, coffin-shaped bunker to the right, trees to the left and scrub long. Makes for a tricky up-and-down.

Hole 6

Par 5, 516 yards

The long tee is framed nicely by trees running down each side. From the back, the tee shot can therefore feel a little intimidating. There is a fairway bunker approximately 250 yards from the back tee. The mounds to the left of the green certainly limit the entrance to the green, thus placing real emphasis on the approach shot. As you progress towards the top of the fairway you are greeted by the infinity green and panoramic views over the Salisbury Plain.

(HOLE BY HOLE)

COURSE TOUR

Hole 7

Par 4, 337 yards

Good, short par 4’s are an essential part of good courses and Tidworth’s 7th is a fine example of one. It may be in range for the longer hitters, but I am always in favour of dangling the carrot and snaring players if they don’t hit the shot to match.

Hole 8

Par 4, 428 yards

A wayward shot left brings the bushes into play. The 8th green slopes subtly from front to back, consequently the approach shot must be well struck to avoid running towards the back.

Hole 9

Par 4, 390 yards

The hole plays as an attractive dogleg with out of bounds all the way to the left and a copse of trees to the right. The approach shot is to a raised green, over a single bunker. Club selection is crucial as I built a large tier in the middle of the green that runs most of the width. This makes a twoputt tricky if you are any distance from the pin.

(HOLE BY HOLE)

COURSE TOUR (HOLE

Hole 10

Par 4, 333 yards

The tree on the left performs the role of a bunker because its influence is more comprehensive; while the bunker on the right is successful at catching the stray drive. Conclusion - must hit the fairway.

Hole 11

Par 3, 188 yards

A downhill par 3 with a large green that slopes heavily from front to back two bunkers that run along the left of the green.

Hole 12

Par 4, 420 yards

A handsome hole and classic Colta hole that sits beautifully with its natural surroundings. The 12th is a long par 4 that is another of Tidworth’s best. The hole plays as a dogleg with a heavily guarded, raised green. To get the best from your tee shot, the line has to be perfect, ideally with a draw: however the right-hand side of the fairway gives the best view of the green, playing a little shorter also.

BY HOLE)

COURSE TOUR

Hole 13

Par 3, 174 yards

The type of short hole where you find the green or take the consequences. The tee shot is enticing, if demanding: it pays to be up. The green is a fair target but its built-up nature means you miss it to the left at your peril.

Hole 14

Par 5, 565 yards

An unmistakable feeling on the tee of “over the hill and far away”. The hole is long enough for errors to be self-induced; errors that come out of a clear, blue sky. Aid is provided by being largely downhill and the setting is stunning, but judgment is the key. Yardage charts are not always an ally.

Hole 15

Par 4, 383 yards

Tidworth’s 15th, 16th and 17th holes are comparatively short par 4’s by today’s standards, but their quality is undiminished. The tee shot on 15 is uphill, whilst the bunker on the right (close to the edge of the green) looks threatening, thus making the approach shot a little daunting. The green appears simple enough, however subtle, can confound even the best putters.

(HOLE BY HOLE)

COURSE TOUR

Hole 16

Par 4, 361 yards

In spite of having no fairway bunkers, the 16th provides one of the hardest drives and is a fine looking hole. The strategy to the hole is actually provided by some handsome trees and the course boundary running the length of the hole. A false front and one bunker left side.

Hole 17

Par 4, 357 yards

The 17th has been opened up in more recent years, good players can be more aggressive from the tee as there is a future in being bold. This attractive hole, with its magnificent trees has been opened up without being spoiled.

Hole 18

Par 4, 421

I am in favour of the contouring of the 18th green which has served Tidworth well for a great many years. It does demand a little ingenuity and improvisation in the shot making. That is its strength. Depending on the pin (and your approach shot!) a very difficult two-putt.
