OFFICIAL BROCHURE 2025 - 2026
Whether a current or prospective member, a visitor or organising a golf or social group, the Board of Directors and staff of Shooters Hill Golf Club offer you a very warm welcome.
Shooters Hill Golf Club is situated in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and a short distance from Blackheath, Canary Wharf and the O2 Arena.
Whether you are playing the course or relaxing on the terrace there are
breathtaking views across the North Kent countryside.
The course is not the longest but offers a challenging test of parkland golf requiring accurate shots from tee to green in order to score well.
The clubhouse offers a relaxing environment for refreshment before or after your round and the club lounge can be hired for family occasions.
The club welcomes applications to join the club either for golf or social membership and if you are visiting the area, there are opportunities for visitors to play the course and societies are welcome.
The club are signatories to the R&A Women in Golf Charter and are Safe Golf Accredited.
We very much look forward to welcoming you to Shooters Hill.
Golf was first played in Shooters Hill in 1903 when a nine-hole course was opened. In 1907 a full 18-hole course was laid out by Willie Park Jr. and the freehold of the land was purchased several years later, with the mansion of Lowood and some 25 additional acres being purchased in 1924.
The course was then completely remodelled in the 1930s by the world renowned course designer Harry Shapland Colt, who was responsible for some of England’s most widely respected courses, including Sunningdale (New Course), Rye and the East and West Courses at Wentworth. Colt’s work was undertaken with Frank Harris Bros, a Guildford-based company who worked with him on many of his projects.
Their work has stood the test of time and to this day presents a first class test of golfing ability.
War brought upheaval to Shooters Hill, as at many other courses. In 1939, the southernmost nine holes of the course were requisitioned for the establishment of an anti-aircraft battery and part of the Clubhouse became the headquarters of the Home Guard.
Pictured above, 10th hole then and now.
In the latter years part of the course also became a Prisoner of War camp for some 1,000 German and Italian prisoners. The camp was surrounded by a 7ft high wire fence, and the cookhouse situated by the 17th green. The remaining nine holes continued to be played even though the course sustained considerable damage from bombing. Little gets in the way of a good round of golf at Shooters Hill, just ask the members today!
After the war years the course and Clubhouse facilities were improved, thanks largely to the supreme efforts of the then Secretary Mr. A G Walls, and the whole course re-opened for play in 1951. The big match of that year was an exhibition played by Bobby Locke and Alf Padgham. Locke was at the peak of his powers at that time, having won the second of his four Open Championships the year before and was to add his third the following year.
Padgham had been selected for the Ryder Cup team three times in the 1930s and won the Open Championship in 1936. He was no match for Locke that day (shooting a 74), but few would have been, the victor setting a course record of 65.
The Club has been blessed with some excellent Club Professionals over the years, the most noteworthy of whom is arguably Ernest Vaux. A Yorkshireman who migrated to the south in the 1920s, he joined Shooters Hill in 1926, remaining at the Club serving its members for 38 years.
In 1966, two years after his retirement, the Club held a Professional Golf Tournament in aid of Ernest’s Testimonial Fund, an indication of the high esteem in which he was held.
Among the famous players to take part were Harry Weetman, Christie O’Connor, Roger Fidler, Tommy Horton and Neil Coles. The tournament was a great success and the winner’s purse was a “stunning” £125!

Golf was first played here in 1903 when a nine-hole course was opened. In 1907 a full 18-hole course was laid out by Willie Park Jr. and completely remodelled in the 1930s by Messrs Harris and Colt.
It is testimony to their work that even with the advances in golf club technology little has altered in the layout to this day yet it still presents a first-class test of golfing ability to the high and low handicapper alike.
The course is laid out close to the top of Shooters Hill having some commanding views over the surrounding areas.
Each hole is interesting and challenging in its own right, with no two holes the same. It is certainly one of the best conditioned courses in the area thanks to the efforts of our Course Manager and the greens staff.
The course has a number of challenging holes. Our signature hole is the picturesque tenth which is included in our own “Amen Corner” consisting of three par
3s, each different to the others and each very demanding. Completing these in par is essential to scoring a good round.
At 5,749 yards from the white tees, it is not long by today’s standards, but don’t drop your guard. It is quite tight in places, so accuracy off the tee is important, and you will find you could use every club in your bag.
It’s a thinking golfer’s course, you certainly can’t beat it to death. It is tree-lined, so even if you are not having to chip out sideways after a wayward drive an errant tee shot will leave you out of position.
Good shot selection and the correct choice of club is critical for a good score. This is not as easy as it sounds, as there are changes in elevation with your approaches to many of the greens.
The putting surfaces themselves offer some tricky borrows thanks to their subtle slopes, but they run true and reward the well-struck shot.
We hope you enjoy your time with us at Shooters Hill Golf Club. Here are a few handy tips and course notes which should help you make the most of your round if you have never visited us before.
All tees are rated for play for male and female play.
White - Par 69
[M] CR 69.2 SR 122
[F] CR 75.1 SR 128
Yellow - Par 69
[M] CR 67.9 SR 118
[F] CR 73.4 SR 125
Red - Par 69
[M] CR 64.9 SR 114
[F] CR 69.7 SR 116
Hole 1, 492 | 485 | 457 yards, par 5
Favouring the left side of the fairway longer hitters will be able to reach this par 5 in two but danger lurks behind the green if too long.
Hole 2, 383 | 354 | 276 yards, par 4
A tee shot left of centre is best where the bounce will inevitably shoot right. Do not be long with your approach or you will need to re-load!
Hole 3, 394 | 348 | 331 yards, par 4
With out of bounds down the whole of the left side this par requires a good tee shot to the right side of the fairway. A long second is usually required to the green with any errant shot falling away if missed to the left.
Hole 4, 145 |131 | 120 yards, par 3
An innocuous-looking par 3 where club selection is vital. Bunkers protect the green on both sides, so hit the middle of the green, make your par and walk off happy!
Hole 5, 490 | 474 | 391 yards, par 5
A tee shot of around 180-200 yards towards the conifers leaves a similar shot just short of the bunkers followed by a short iron to the right side of the green.
Hole 6, 343 | 328 | 324 yards, par 4
Favour the left side of the fairway where the second shot has to be perfect as trouble awaits anything left, right, short or long (!), followed by one of the trickiest fastest greens on the course.
Hole 7, 345 | 338 | 303 yards, par 4
Aim for the centre of this cambered fairway where a bad bounce awaits anything left or right! The middle of the green is the sensible option for your second shot.
Hole 8, 258 | 254 | 223 yards, par 4
An easy-looking par four where the big hitters can go for the green but beware the ditch that runs across the fairway. Once on the green be ready for a pacy putt where the line is also paramount.
Hole 9, 252 | 249 | 196 yards, par 3
You will probably need the biggest club in your bag to reach this long par three, aim to the right where a favourable bounce might leave you on the green. If short, play a low running chip to a sloping green.
Hole 10, 165 | 156 | 115 yards, par 3
Our signature hole where a wide but narrow green awaits, aim for the centre of the green every time!
Hole 11, 159 | 150 | 144 yards, par 3
A difficult uphill par three where club selection is again vital. Bunkers await anything short so take an extra club as there is a bank at the back of the green to assist anything long.
Hole 12, 374 | 365 | 303 yards, par 4
A good straight tee shot is required here with a ditch to the right and trees left. A bunker front right will catch those who under hit to the green.
Hole 13, 356 | 321 | 316 yards, par 4
A straight tee shot required, preferably left of centre from another elevated tee. A steep uphill second requires more than the yardage suggests and steep slopes all round the green mean that you are better off long than short.
Hole 14, 363 | 348 | 307 yards, par 4
Everything falls to the right from the tee so favour the left to avoid trouble. Bunkers front left and right are the only obstacles to entry on to this two-tier green.
Hole 15, 381 | 371 | 296 yards, par 4
A long sweeping dog-leg requires two long hits to reach a very difficult undulating green. Favour the right side of the green with your approach.
Hole 16, 368 | 353 | 321 yards, par 4
Aim towards the big oak tree on the righthand side of the fairway but don’t be too long as a ditch awaits either side of this fairway. Your second shot will kick left as it reaches the green.
Hole 17, 135 | 127 | 113 yards, par 3
Bunkers short, left and right await the errant shots on this par 3 but it is a big
green and kindly bounces on to the putting surface can usually be found if coming in from the left.
Hole 18, 346 | 326 | 317 yards, par 4
Aim to the left side of the fairway as most shots bounce to the right. For your second shot aim at the Copper Beech but don’t be long as out of bounds is just through the green.
