Founded in 1891, Rugby Golf Club is one of the oldest courses in the Midlands and sits on the Warwickshire, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire borders, just 5 minutes from the M6, Junction 1.
The Course is unique. It is compact, with challenging target areas and comprises seven par 3s, eight par 4s and three par 5s (from the back tees).
It is a test for golfers of all abilities and was designed by James Braid, master golfer and course designer, incorporating his classic combination of risk and reward.

Rugby Golf Club was founded in 1891. Mr Morris Davies and Mr Sedgewick were responsible for forming the club and it is to these men that many generations of Rugby golfers owe a debt of gratitude.
Before 1935, the golf course was split. The six holes on the land on the North side of Clifton Road (only very recently converted to housing) were abandoned and incorporated on land that was leased from Rugby Town Council, together with land adjoining the main portion of the course owned by Mr. Lee. This made the course far more compact. The new lease negotiated with the Council then put the club on a more permanent basis.
In 1941 three of the 18 holes were requisitioned for agricultural purposes to help meet the war effort. Towards the end of 1947, with no hope of regaining these three holes on the East side of the canal, it was decided to construct a course with 18 holes on the remaining land. Accordingly, James Braid, the well known golf professional and course designer, was invited to help the club. He visited in 1949 and a comprehensive scheme of improvements was agreed.

The reconstructed course was officially opened on the 14 May 1949 with an exhibition match. The course has seen many changes over the years and is thought by many professionals and amateurs alike that although not long, 5614 yards, par 68, its many natural features make it a thinking golfer’s course. One of its features is the now redundant railway viaduct built circa 1885. It is a friendly club and together with its splendid layout makes it well worth a visit.

A pleasant start to your round with an early test, clearing the hedge. Big hitters may attempt the green, but a well positioned 3 wood leaves a short pitch into a green that is below you. Pro tip: Avoid right off the tee as you may be blocked out by trees and the shot back risks bunkers on either side of the green.
Hole 2:
The shortest par 3 here at Rugby Golf Club has an elevated green position with a two tier green. It is by no means a straight forward par 3. Pro tip: Try not to be short! Apart from the awkward slope and blind shot, the two small pot bunkers await a mis-hit.
A short but demanding par 4 dogleg left. The elevated tee position helps you to visualise the shape of the hole where the slope will draw your shot left, leaving you with a pitch into the green. It’s not the green you can see from the tee, that’s the 14th ! Pro tip: Avoid the left side again, as the trees will block out your second shot into the green. In the summer the ball bounces left very easily from the middle of the fairway.
The first of 3 par fives here at Rugby Golf Club a reasonably long and straight hole which for many will take at least three shots to reach the green. Pro tip: You should try to leave yourself a pitch from the right side to allow an easier approach into the green. It is better to plan an uphill putt on the green and not one from above the hole.

The prevailing winds can made this a good length par 3 early into your round. The green has a narrow entrance and is guarded by three bunkers. Pro tip: Avoid left off the tee. The ditch is out of bounds. Try to carry your iron shot all the way on to the green.
The narrow exit from the yellow and white tees can be intimidating. Once through, there is an undulating fairway, with a long narrow green nestling into the slope. Pro tip: Despite the difficult first shot from the yellow and white tees, this par 5 presents an early birdie opportunity from all tees. It requires a solid tee shot up the left side and the green can be reached in two. Luck of the draw with your sloping lie though! For those aiming to reach the green in two or to pitch a more comfortable 3r onto the green, a line just inside the bunker on the left is often sensible.
One of Rugby Golf Club’s smaller greens, the relatively small target is well guarded and again nestles into the slope. Pro tip: You need to be accurate, but avoid missing left as the slope can kick the ball a long way down away from the green. Try to carry the green but beware its protective bunkers
Hole 8:
A tight hole with the railway perimeter fence a constant threat. A longer tee shot requires a tricky pitch from a sloping lie to an elevated green. Pro tip: A good mid iron lays you up onto the flat allowing a straight forward pitch onto the green..

The original James Braid hole, one of the hardest par 3s in the country from the white and yellow’ tees, but the easiest hole on the course from the red, in theory. Pro tip: A very challenging drive from white and yellow tees. At times it makes sense from these tees to play the hole as a Par 4 and leave a straightforward pitch, by laying up to the centre of the fairway away from trouble right and left. Similarly, from the red tee the middle of the fairway is the aim and there is a good birdie chance.
Another elevated tee shot that requires a mid iron to set you up for a second shot to a sloping green. Pro tip: Left is out of bounds and it’s easy to get behind the tree on the right, so another guided tee shot is required. Try to leave yourself a putt up to the flag rather than down. If you aren’t a long hitter, consider laying up to leave a relatively easy pitch. The brook is at its widest on this hole.
Hole 11:
A mid length par 3 with a very narrow green protected by a green side bunker and a new ditch awaiting shorter hitters. Pro tip: An accurate tee shot is needed again to a small green.
Hole 12:
A good par three to finish a run of tough holes. The brook which dissects the hole can often catch a mishit tee shot.Pro tip: Avoid missing this green long and to the right as you will be left with an almost impossible chip to get the ball close on a heavily contoured green. If you are not a long hitter consider laying up and leaving yourself a fairly straight forward pitch.

Hole 13:
A dog leg left with another difficult fairway to play from. The green is surrounded by a raised bank with a very narrow entrance. If you stray on to the 14th you are out of bounds. Pro tip: The important tee shot must be out towards the right. The second shot difficulty varies on your lie but a high approach will land softly on the green within the surround.
Hole 14:
A straight forward par 3 as you see it.
A small cluster of trees guards the right side with a feature pond on the left. A ditch runs across the centre of the fairway with water problems to the left ( a pond) and to the right ( the brook). Pro tip: Attempt to fly the ball all the way into this green, as again the opening is a narrow one.
Hole 15:
A great par 5 which crosses the river twice. The brook separating 15th from 4th is out of bounds all the way on the left of the 15th.
A very tempting second shot awaits a longer hitter, if you hit a good tee shot. The brook runs just in front of the green. Pro tip: Longer hitters, you could go for the green in two and have a putt for an eagle! It’s a great decision hole late in the round. It is important to position yourself with a favoured pitch for your 3rd or 4th shot over the second brook if you haven’t taken it on with your 2nd.

Hole 16:
A tricky par 4 to start the home stretch, tight tee shot with strategic bunkers into a relatively receptive sloped green. Pro tip: This hole is deceptive. A well hit- drive can easily find strategic fairway bunkers. Also a sloping fairway can induce errant shots to the left where a copse of trees awaits. Avoid right off the tee, where the canal awaits the slice and try to leave a favoured iron into the green. Be careful not to overshoot as the slope will run away from you for your next shot.
Hole 17:
Long straight par 4 lined with poplars down the left side. Long narrow green protected by bunkers on the left side. Pro tip: Tee shot here is all important to allow a mid-iron into the green. Beware the bush in front but avoid going too far right as you can be blocked out by the trees and a long hitter can all too easily find the canal with a pushed or sliced drive.
Hole 18:
Very tough finishing hole which firstly requires a good carry off the tee to a dog leg right or a well judged lay up. A long blind second shot uphill to a narrow green guarded by two bunkers at the front.
The hole is named ‘Wrecker’. Pro tip: This hole should be treated with respect or it will live up to its name. It is for most best played like a par 5! The second and third shot, if you are still on the uphill fairway, is completely blind. A 4 feels like a birdie on this hole. Avoid straying right to the trees or left on to the 1st and if protecting a good score or a winning position in a match, consider laying up off the tee. A mis-hit shot often finds the brook.
