Declamation: A Celebration of Learning Through Public Speaking
Every year, the culmination of our Kindergarten through 7th grade academic journey is marked by the Lake Tahoe School signature event called Declamation. This unique performance allows our students to showcase their knowledge, creativity and public speaking skills in a truly engaging way.
Lower School Declamation showcased the incredible talents and creativity of our youngest students. From kindergarteners exploring local wildlife to fifth graders delving into historical figures, our students captivated audiences with their presentations, poetry recitations, and musical performances. The Middle School Declamation featured captivating performances from our sixth and seventh graders. Sixth graders showcased their individuality through personalized poetry selections, while seventh graders entertained the audience with their comedic skits.
In addition to their on-stage performances, students showcased their incredible art and science projects in the exhibition hall outside of the gym. Never have the walls seemed so alive with the vibrancy and amazing creativity of our students!
Declamation is more than just a performance; it’s a celebration of our students’ learning throughout their LTS career. It’s a platform for our students to showcase their confidence, public speaking skills, and the knowledge they’ve gained throughout the year. We’re incredibly proud of each and every one of our performers!
Education. School.
8th Grade Senior Exhibition Projects
One of the highlights and signature experiences at Lake Tahoe School is 8th Grade Exhibition. Exhibition is a project-based learning activity in which 8th grade students research any topic they are passionate about and create a project, research paper, and presentation to share with the class, the school, the community....the world! Exhibition encourages creativity in and out of the classroom and promotes inquiry, perseverance, problem solving, and innovation, among other lifelong skills.
This past year's Exhibition featured a diverse range of topics, from homelessness and website creation to hockey and fly fishing. Students demonstrated their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit through projects like building an electric guitar, making their own hockey stick, and designing unique products. Several students took their projects even further and hoped to turn theirs into potential businesses. Whether we learned about fly fishing, autoimmune diseases, the physics of golf, gymnastics, glassblowing, volleyball coaching, or martial arts, it was impossible not to be impressed.
The Exhibition not only showcased students' academic knowledge but also highlighted their personal strengths and interests. It serves as a capstone to their educational journey at Lake Tahoe School, connecting their early learning experiences to their final project. The dedication and hard work of our students were evident in the quality of their presentations. Their passion and enthusiasm for their topics were inspiring, and their ability to communicate complex ideas effectively was impressive. We are incredibly proud of our 8th graders and their accomplishments.
Education. Small School. Big
Celebrating Literacy at the Bobcat Treehouse
The inaugural year of the Bobcat Treehouse Library Media Center was a major success for students and faculty alike. We had over 4,000 library book checkouts over the year from both students and faculty, students became acquainted with our genre-organized library using genre passports, we started our Inclined 2 Read community book club that many of our families participated in, and we hosted our first Family Literacy Night in the Lower School! We brought back our visiting author/illustrator program and hosted Jarrett Lerner in the fall, who gave remarkable presentations for grades K-8. His books continue to hold spots in our Bobcat Treehouse Top 10 (this is like the Billboard Hot 100 but for books in the library). In the spring, we hosted local author, Joanna Howes who shared her book, Wild Sierra Nevada with PreK, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade. Overall, the Bobcat Treehouse has proven to be a major asset for LTS students and families.
We look forward to hosting more authors and illustrators, and continuing the Inclined 2 Read book club with our fall pick, The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. We will also continue to host meetings and speakers, and utilze the Bobcat Treehouse as a space for learning and gathering.
MEET OUR LIBRARIAN
MS. ALY NUGENT
Visiting Illustrator/ Author Visits
In the fall, award-winning illustrator and author Jarrett Lerner shared his creativity, his experiences, and his heart with our students in a series of presentations throughout the school day, and gave a free community presentation in the evening on how graphic novels contribute to literacy. In the spring, local author Joanna Howes and illustrator Alex Bailey shared their book "Wild Sierra Nevada: A Family Nature Guide" with our youngest Bobcats.
Literacy Night Open House Community Partnerships
Lower School hosted a Family Literacy Night. Designed as an Open House format, families were encouraged to visit the Lower School classrooms as well as the Bobcat Treehouse. Families engaged in literacy activities and examine literacy-based projects such as biography and book projects designed by the students. In the Bobcat Treehouse, Ms. Aly hosted a "Book Tasting" where families read, discussed, and checked out books of interest together.
In addition to our internal literacy efforts, Ms. Aly has taken her love of reading community-wide with the Inclined 2 Read Community Book Club for Families, in partnership with librarians from the Incline Village Library, Incline Elementary School, Incline Middle School, and Incline Education Fund. She has also represented Lake Tahoe School at the Incline Village Block Party.
Guiding us through this learning journey is our librarian, Aly Nugent, who has dedicated herself to our students by helping create a fun and functional learning space. Ms. Aly has put together an amazing library curriculum for our students, which includes working with our teachers, bringing in authors, and collaborating with our community's librarians. Her efforts are aimed at inspiring a love of literacy and nurturing a thriving campus community.
Ms. Aly grew up in Incline Village and is a true Tahoe local. She loves spending summers on the lake paddleboarding and wake surfing, in addition to hiking the mountains and skiing in the winter with her family. Ms. Aly graduated from Sierra Nevada University with a Bachelor’s degree in English and a Master’s degree in Elementary Education. She has 10 years of teaching experience and began her teaching career at a Title 1 school in Reno before moving to Incline Elementary School where she was a 4th and 5th grade teacher, and English Language Development co-teacher.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics
STEM education at Lake Tahoe School provides a strong foundation for our young learners. By introducing these subjects early on, we cultivate curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. STEM activities foster creativity, collaboration, and a growth mindset.
We foster STEM-based learning with three science labs, advanced math classes in Middle School, a dedicated Makerspace classroom and teacher, Middle School advisory STEM challenges, and several other initiatives throughout the year. Our commitment to STEM education ensures that our graduates are well-prepared to pursue future academic and career endeavors.
The Stock Market Games
Pi Day Celebration
On March 14th, our lower school students marked Pi Day with a remarkable achievement: memorizing and reciting a combined 1,000 digits of pi. This impressive feat showcased the students' dedication and intellectual curiosity.
Mrs. Mancuso played a key role in organizing the event. She created engaging activities, designed custom shirts for our winning pi recitals, and baked delicious pies to celebrate.
The ability to memorize and recite large numbers of pi demonstrates exceptional cognitive abilities and a strong work ethic. Pi Day at Lake Tahoe School highlighted the importance of celebrating academic achievements and creating a positive learning environment.
Lake Tahoe School Middle School students once again showcased their investing prowess by placing four teams in the top 20 of the middle school division in the Nevada Stock Market Game (SMG), led by Middle School math teacher Patrick Fleming. During the algebra and geometry units, students learned the basics of stock market investing by electronically trading $100,000 in virtual money on the SMG platform.
The team of Lachlan, Oliver, Grayson, and Enzo finished in an impressive 4th place out of over 100 Middle School teams. Their strategic trades, including investments in Nvidia (NVDA) and a short position in MicroCloud Hologram (HOLO), outperformed the S&P 500 by a significant 15%. Other top-performing teams included the "NY Stock Exchangers" and the "Stockers."
The Stock Market Game is a valuable learning experience for our middle school students, providing them with a hands-on opportunity to apply their knowledge of economics and finance. We are proud of our students' accomplishments and their continued success in this prestigious competition year after year.
6th & 7th Grade
Science Expo
The Lake Tahoe School Middle School Science Expo was a resounding success, showcasing the incredible talent and dedication of our young scientists. Despite a recent storm, the event attracted a large crowd of visitors eager to explore the fascinating projects our students had created.
A panel of five community judges, including Lake Tahoe School alumni, substitute teachers, and representatives from the UC Tahoe Environmental Research Center, volunteered their time to evaluate the projects. Their expertise and support were invaluable in recognizing the outstanding work of our students.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our Middle School Science teachers, Mr. Prentice and Ms. Elle, for their guidance and mentorship throughout the Science Expo process. Their passion for science and dedication to their students were evident in the quality of the projects presented.
The Science Expo award winners demonstrated exceptional scientific thought, creativity, and research skills. Their projects covered a wide range of topics, from water filtration systems to the impact of negativity in the news. Congratulations to all our award-winning students and to all participants for their hard work and dedication.
The Science Expo is an important initiative in Middle School as it provides students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge, develop critical thinking skills, and explore their interests in a hands-on way. It also fosters a sense of curiosity and a love of learning. We are proud of our students' accomplishments and look forward to future Science Expos.

MakerSpace Class Demonstrates Technology and Engineering Skills at Diamond Peak Dummy Downhill
This spring's Dummy Downhill at Diamond Peak Ski Resort saw some epic launches and crashes from our Lake Tahoe School Dummies! Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade sketched, planned, and built one dummy for each grade in MakerSpace class over the course of several months.
Heading up this project were Mr. Pandola, our Technology Director, and Mr. Jude, our MakerSpace and Technology teacher. These fearless leaders guided our lower school students in constructing six of the most creative dummies yet!
New Program: Chess Club & Chess Team
Our inaugural Chess Team, comprised of dedicated students from grades K-5, clinched the 2024 NV State Champions title in the K-5 Reserve Division at the Las Vegas tournament in March. Despite facing stiff competition from larger teams, our Bobcats proved their mettle, with every player winning at least one game. Eric emerged as the undisputed State Champion, while Alora, Abby, Max, and Jameson also secured impressive finishes. In the K-12 Reserve division, Acadia and Kora placed in the top five.
The success of our chess team is a result of the efforts of Coach Eric, Mr. Jude, and Coach Anastasia. Their guidance and support have been instrumental in developing the skills and confidence of our young players.
This victory is a testament to the strength and depth of our chess program, which offers after-school chess club for students in grades K-5. We are excited to see what the future holds for our talented young chess players as they continue to compete and grow.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
Speaker Series on Youth Mental Wellness
This past year, we started back up on our Speaker Series, where we host various speakers throughout the year for school visits designed to benefit students and faculty during the school day, with an added community presentation for the larger Tahoe Basin community. This year, we began the program with three speakers focusing on student mental health.
Phyllis L. Fagell School Counselor, Author, and Journalist
Lake Tahoe School was thrilled to once again welcome Phyllis L. Fagell, a renowned author and expert on youth mental health. Ms. Fagell had visited us previously to share key skills from her book, Middle School Matters , and we welcomed her back to share skills to thrive in Middle School and beyond from her new book, Middle School Superpowers . She shared her insights and advice with students and parents, offering practical tips for navigating the challenges of middle school. Her engaging presentation sparked thoughtful discussions and provided valuable tools for fostering resilience and well-being in young people.
Michael Thompson, Ph.D School Counselor, Author, and Journalist
Dr. Thompson returned to Lake Tahoe School for a presentation on friendship development, popularity, and social cruelty in childhood. In his community presentation, he discussed how social relationships in school impact happiness in adult life, why cliques form and the differences between female and male friendships, and how parents and administrators can protect children against bullying. He engaged students in an open conversation about friendship, and left both students and parents with this nugget of knowledge: "Always seek positive reactions from your children/friends. Talk to them frequently.
Lisa L. Lewis, MS School Counselor, Author, and Journalist
Lake Tahoe School hosted a captivating presentation by renowned author and sleep expert Lisa L. Lewis in the spring. Geared towards our middle schoolers, the session wasn't a snoozefest! Pulling from her book The Sleep-Deprived Teen , Ms. Lewis used a combination of science and interactive activities to highlight the importance of sleep for growing minds. Students actively participated, asking questions and learning how healthy sleep habits can boost their well-being and academic performance. Ms. Lewis also provided valuable resources to parents in order to continue the conversation about sleep at home.
ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS
The Lake Tahoe School athletic program had a fantastic year, with our student-athletes shining bright in various sports. From cross country championships to basketball victories and track and field triumphs, our teams consistently exceeded expectations.
Beyond the wins, we focused on developing our athletes as individuals. Inspiring talks from former Olympian Kerri Walsh Jennings and educational sessions on athletic safety helped our students grow both on and off the field. Our partnership with Diamond Peak Ski Resort also provided exciting opportunities for our winter sports enthusiasts, and a few of our lower school students joined Incline Elementary for the Girls on the Run program.
The school year concluded in the glorious chaos that was the traditional last day of school Field Day. From Kindergarten to eighth grade, Bobcat Families fiercely (but fairly!) competed in a series of games for the coveted Field Day trophy, with the Navy Blue Bobcats coming out on top!
It was a year to remember for Lake Tahoe School athletics, and we can't wait to see what the future holds. And remember...
if you had fun,
you won!
Jon Cooper Athletic Director
Kerri Walsh Jennings shares her Olympic gold insight with students about overcoming hardships and achieving your dreams
Four-time Olympic medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings delivered a powerful message to Middle Schoolers at a special assembly. During the event, Student Council members conducted an interview with Kerri, asking questions about the importance of daily effort, finding one's purpose, and overcoming self-doubt.
Kerri's message resonated with raw vulnerability and practical wisdom. Debunking the myth of overnight success, she emphasized the crucial role of consistent effort and a positive attitude. "The greats make people uncomfortable because they show up every single day," Kerri declared, urging students to embrace dedication and consistency.
But showing up isn't enough. Finding a personal "why" became the anchor of Kerri's message. She shared a powerful self-reflective video, reminding students that without purpose, goals crumble under pressure. "Goals without purpose are like a house of cards," Kerri warned, emphasizing the transformative power of a dream that fuels perseverance through setbacks.
Kerri also tackled the common middle school struggles with self-doubt and social comparison. Her solution? "Don't compare yourself to others; be inspired by them." Mistakes and challenges are not failures, but stepping stones on the path to growth. Channeling Dr. Jordan Peterson's wisdom, Kerri shared, "It's not about becoming fearless, it's about becoming braver."
Beyond the gold, Kerri celebrated the joy of the process and the importance of a strong support system. Every day is a chance to improve, even amidst the tedious fundamentals. Lean on a network of loved ones, and as Kerri exclaimed, "Don't forget that you're human and don't forget to have fun!" This wasn't just a talk from an Olympian; it was a roadmap for success. Kerri's message aimed to equip young minds with the tools to navigate their own journeys, showing them that excellence isn't built overnight, but with heart, purpose, and the unwavering belief that each new day brings an opportunity to grow.
Cross Country
The Lake Tahoe School Bobcats had an exceptional Cross Country season, culminating in a stunning performance at the championships. The team secured four championship titles, including both boys and girls teams in the 7th and 8th grades. Shelby Erikson, a standout athlete, claimed the Tah-Neva championship in the 8th grade girls division. An impressive seven LTS students finished in the top ten at the championships, showcasing the team's overall strength and dedication.
Girls
Basketball
The 2023-24 Girls Basketball season was fantastic! The 8th grade team finished the season ranked 2nd in their division, which advanced them to the D1 Small School Tournament in Virginia City. The 7th grade team finished the season ranked 2nd in the division as well! They also competed in the D1 Small School Tournament and won, advancing to the championships at Eagle Valley Middle School. This was our season goal and both teams worked incredibly hard. We are proud of their hard work and accomplishments!
Boys Basketball
The Lake Tahoe School Boys Basketball team concluded their season with an 11-0 record in the regular season. They won the small school tournament, earning a place in the Tah-Neva Boys Basketball Championship tournament. Although they didn't win the Tah-Neva Championships, their competitive spirit and hard work throughout the season were commendable. The team, coaches, parents, and fans all played a vital role in their success.
Students vs. Faculty Games
Our 8th grade boys basketball team, girls basketball team, and girls volleyball team each participated in the annual students vs. faculty games this past winter. Each year, after the end of the athletic season, students gather in Duffield Hall to cheer on our teachers, coaches, athletes, and even alumni as they compete for the top spot. In January, the teachers brought home the trophy after defeating both boys and girls basketball teams. In March, the teachers won again against girls volleyball. All student athletes played their hearts out, even against the "stacked" teams. Way to go, Bobcats!
Girls Volleyball
Despite not qualifying for the Small School tournament this year, the Lake Tahoe School girls volleyball teams had a season marked by significant growth and development. Over the brief but intense season, both teams showcased improvement in their skills and teamwork. The dedication and hard work put in by the players were evident in their performances throughout the season. While the outcome may not have been as desired, the positive strides made by the teams lay a strong foundation for future success.
Nordic
Ski
The Lake Tahoe School Nordic ski team had a remarkable season, marked by significant growth and development. The athletes' skate skiing form improved dramatically, leading to impressive results at races throughout the season. The team's dedication and perseverance were evident in their performance at the championships, where they achieved outstanding results. The coaches and parents are incredibly proud of the team's accomplishments and look forward to their continued success in the future.
Track & Field
The Lake Tahoe School Track andField team dominated the Tah-Neva Championships this past season, claiming three team championships in the 7th and 8th grade divisions. The team's success was attributed to outstanding individual performances and the exceptional leadership of the 8th grade class. Several athletes achieved personal bests and set new school and Tah-Neva records.
Girls on the Run
Lake Tahoe School’s Girls on the Run team concluded their season with a triumphant run on a warm Saturday in June. Dressed in vibrant pink shirts and capes, our young athletes proudly represented the school and had a fantastic time. Girls on the Run empowers girls to recognize their inner strength, increase their physical activity, and confidently stand up for themselves and others. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to coaches Aly Nugent, Michelle Vaughan, and Cynthia Keeler for their dedication and guidance. A special thanks to Jeanee Gonet for joining us as a celebrity guest runner!
Middle School Drama Class Presents: Finding Nemo Jr.
A vibrant underwater world came to life on the Doyle Family Stage last November as Lake Tahoe School’s Middle School drama class performed Finding Nemo Jr ., a musical adaptation of the beloved Pixar movie Finding Nemo . Starring Kylie as Marlin, Annabelle as Nemo, and Stellan as Dory, the entire cast brought energy, enthusiasm, and a touch of magic to the stage.
From the bustling Great Barrier Reef to the intimidating depths of the East Australian Current, the students transported the audience on an unforgettable underwater adventure. Thanks to the help of our parent volunteers, the colorful costumes, creative set design, and expressive performances brought the beloved characters to life. Under the leadership of Mrs. Amory, the students honed their acting, singing, and dancing skills, creating a truly memorable performance.
By participating in such productions, students develop essential life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and self-confidence. They learn to overcome challenges, work collaboratively, and perform under pressure. The experience of being part of a theatrical production fosters a sense of community and a lifelong appreciation for the arts. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the entire cast and crew of Finding Nemo Jr. for an outstanding show.
Dí a de los Muertos
Celebration
Lake Tahoe School’s annual celebration of Día de los Muertos is more than just a cultural observance; it’s a poignant reminder of the importance of honoring and remembering loved ones. Rather than focusing on mourning, this special day is dedicated to celebrating the lives of those who have passed. Students learn about the cultural significance of the holiday and are encouraged to create personal ofrendas, or altars, to honor their own loved ones.
A central element of the celebration is the community ofrenda, a beautifully adorned altar displayed in the school’s main lobby. Filled with photographs, personal items, and heartfelt messages, the ofrenda serves as a powerful symbol of remembrance. Students and staff alike spend time reflecting on the lives of those who have passed, fostering a deeper understanding of the cycle of life and death.
In addition to the annual performances by our third- through eighth-grade students, which includes art displays, singing, and dancing, last year’s Día de los Muertos assembly featured a now poignant student-created slideshow, where seventh-grade students shared personal stories about their loved ones. From Holocaust survivors to beloved family members, these heartfelt tributes touched the hearts of the audience and highlighted the enduring impact of these individuals. By celebrating Día de los Muertos, Lake Tahoe School instills in its students a sense of gratitude, empathy, and a deep appreciation for the precious gift of life.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION & SERVICE LEARNING
Strong independent schools such as Lake Tahoe School integrate a balanced approach on behalf of their students. This "triangle" includes Academics, Arts, and Athletics - three true strengths of our school. This past year, we were able to put a larger focus on our Outdoor Education program. To that effect, we were able to allocate over $260,000 towards field trips and outdoor education in the 2023-2024 school year.
Living as we do in the Lake Tahoe region and realizing that the key skills of cooperation, self-sufficiency, and greater understanding of the environment are critical factors for all of us, we are striving to strengthen and weave its many common aspects into our overall school programs. From everyday field trips to overnighters, advisory groups to international travel, and Winterim to Adventure Week, we want our students to be able to learn and better understand themselves and the world around them.
Our younger students are able to experience science, history, nature, and community service outside of the classroom with numerous field trips throughout the year. Through a comprehensive curriculum, older students learn outdoor skills such as map reading, compass navigation, wilderness first aid, and Leave No Trace principles. By participating in these immersive experiences, students develop leadership abilities, teamwork skills, and a strong sense of environmental stewardship.

Winterim OUTDOOR EDUCATION & SERVICE LEARNING
Winterim is a cornerstone of Lake Tahoe School’s Middle School curriculum, offering students a unique opportunity to explore their passions and expand their horizons. During this immersive program, students embark on a variety of experiences, from local adventures to international travel, fostering personal growth, cultural awareness, and a lifelong love of learning.
This past year, our Middle School students ventured to diverse destinations, each offering unique opportunities for exploration and growth. Sixth graders headed to Grizzly Creek Ranch, a stunning outdoor retreat where they engaged in team-building activities, learned about environmental conservation, and forged lasting friendships. Seventh graders embarked on a journey to Washington D.C., delving into American history and government. They explored iconic landmarks, participated in a mock Congress, and gained a deeper understanding of the nation's political process. Half our eighth graders headed to the sun-soaked beaches of Santa Barbara, California, where they enjoyed surfing, hiking, and exploring the local culture. For a more adventurous experience, a group of eighth graders traveled to Costa Rica, where they volunteered on an organic coffee farm, learned about sustainable agriculture, and experienced the beauty of the rainforest.
Through these immersive experiences, our students develop essential life skills, such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and adaptability. They also gain a deeper appreciation for different cultures and perspectives, fostering empathy and global citizenship. Winterim is a testament to Lake Tahoe School’s commitment to providing students with a well-rounded education that extends beyond the classroom.
Middle School Advisory
In this program, each student is assigned to an advisory team that is made up of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. This advisory team meets regularly throughout the school year and provides students and families with a support system to oversee each student's academic performance and participation in Middle School. In addition to the regularly scheduled advisory meetings, a number of experiential workshops are scheduled throughout the year to provide hands-on learning opportunities!
This past year, advisory groups embarked on a variety of exciting adventures, including hiking through the Mount Rose meadows, experiencing the thrill of underwater hockey, and practicing yoga on the beach. Other experiences included engaging in cooking competitions, exploring new flavors, and learning valuable teamwork skills. These shared experiences not only strengthened bonds between advisors and students across different grades, but also promoted teamwork, problem-solving, and a love for learning.
Beyond the fun and exciting activities, the Advisory Program provided essential academic and social support. Advisors worked closely with students to set goals, monitor progress, and address any challenges. By creating a safe and supportive environment, the program empowered students to thrive academically and socially.

The students have embraced opportunities to participate in drama productions, outdoor education outings, Declamation, and a variety of enrichment classes.
The ceremony was made even more special by the moving speech from one of our school's founders, Dave Duffield. Dave and his wife Cheryl, whose daughter Mackenzie was among this year's graduates, have been generous supporters of Lake Tahoe School for many years. Their contributions have helped transform the school from a basement facility to a thriving campus with a gym and performing arts center. The Duffields' dedication to education and community has been instrumental in the school’s growth and success. His speech can be found below.
Thanks Bob. And thanks for inviting me to speak today. If I had known I’d be following Mr. Casey, I would’ve brought my guitar. (I played guitar in a rock band in college.)
Bob has restricted me to 5 minutes. In this time, I’m going to recall some memories about LTS, a few memories of my own middle school years, try to weave in a little humor, and close with a personal story.
Incline Village is a very special place for our family – primarily because of Lake Tahoe School and the terrific teachers and staff, spirited kids, and caring parents. But I’d like to single out Bob Graves. He has a tough job and doesn’t get many public kudos.
I’ve had the personal pleasure of working with several of the LTS headmasters in the early days. All were terrific, but none as terrific as Bob. He’s shown tremendous aptitude in leading teachers and staff. He’s an outstanding communicator. He keeps our kids in
line and motivated. And he skillfully handles the most difficult job of managing us, the parents. He’s constantly thinking of new ideas to improve or expand our kids’ educational experience. And, along with Kris and Cynthia, he’s outside almost every morning, greeting parents and kids, good weather or bad. Bob, I’m thrilled for everyone that you’ve committed to 4 more years as our school’s leader.
My middle school years in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, were some of the best of my life. (By the way, I thought you’d be interested in knowing, Ho-Ho-Kus is the only double-hyphenated town name in the country.) I loved hanging out with my friends -- a number of whom I'm still in touch with. We rode bikes, played street games, played pool and ping-pong, caused a little trouble...
Like Ms. Amory, my mom was a fourth-grade teacher, so education was important in my family. Middle school was where I became interested in competitive sports, with baseball being my sport of choice.
Math was my favorite subject. It still is today. My Middle School math teacher was Ms. Marseille. Really pretty. She’d sit on my desk and we’d talk about Linear Equations, Quadratic Expressions, and Polynomials. I had a big crush on her. You know, very similar to Mr. Fleming’s effect on our 8th grade girls. Go FlemDog!
And now for the hopeful “humor” part…
When I was working in the Bay Area, we had all-company meetings, and I’d end each meeting with a Top 10 list similar to comedian David Letterman’s. Some of my one-liners got big laughs, and some of them tanked. I thought about doing a Top 10 today – maybe the “Top 10 Greatest Tricks 8th Graders Have Pulled Off”, but I figured most of the students (and maybe even some adults) have never seen a Letterman Top 10...
CELEBRATING OVER 250GRADUATES
*continued on next page*
Instead, I’ve reflected on some Then and Now scenarios… “Then” being when our sons and daughters were in PreK; and “Now” being today, as teenagers. Let’s see how this goes…
Then: When they were young, they needed help tying their shoes. Now: They help us with our cell phones.
Back Then: They shared crayons. Now: They share drama.
Then: They sang their ABC’s. Now: They sing "Espresso."
Then: When a girl had a crush on a boy, and the boy annoyed her, the girl would kick him in the shins. Now: She’d kick him in….a more sensitive spot.
Then: They danced to Kidz Bop. Now: They dance to Ice Spice. Ouch! Bring back Kidz Bop.
Then: They greeted each other with hugs and squeals. Now: They greet each other with a fist bump.
Then: Boys carried around fidget spinners. Now: They fidget with the front of their hair all day long.
Then: Girls wore Princess T’s and tutus. Now: Black Lulu leggings and Converse -- Much cooler.
Then: Lucky Charms and Cheerios for breakfast. Now: Lucky Charms and Cheerios for breakfast.
Then: We dropped them off at "Happyland" and they clung to our legs. Now: We drop them off at the Reno airport to go to Santa Barbara and Costa Rica and they ask for spending cash.
Then: Elsa was the girls’ favorite singer. Now: We're all Swifties.
And now for my closing story. (And a true one at that. And very personal.)
On January 19, 2010, our daughter Mackenzie was born. I was the CEO of Workday in Pleasanton, CA. Before the Rock Star commercials. And before moving into the Fortune 500 last week. Workday had around 400 employees at the time and was growing fast.
Personally, Cheryl and I were in the middle of building a new home on a 22-acre parcel in Alamo, CA. It took seven years to design and build. We planned on spending many years there.
Mackenzie was a delightful baby. And continued to be a delight at age 1, age 2, age 3. Cheryl and I looked at each other: We have a pretty special kid here. Our older kids will be finished with high school in June, 2015…
It was obvious: Come 2015, I should retire from Workday, and we should sell our Alamo estate that we had lived in for only three years. Uproot ourselves once again and move back to Incline Village.
Why? For the sole purpose of Mackenzie attending LTS.
I gave up my career at a highly successful company. And we chose to leave one of the nicest homes in the Bay Area so that our daughter could have the finest educational and friendship experiences on earth. God gave us a wonderful little girl, and we decided to change our lives to optimize hers. It remains the biggest and best decision Cheryl and I have ever made. And we’d do it all over again — simply because of Lake Tahoe School.
To Mackenzie’s classmates, Bob, the teachers, staff, Board, friends, and families: Thank you for validating this decision every day. Please join me in a huge congratulations to our awesome graduates – you are the best! Stay adventurous, curious, thoughtful, keep your sense of humor, and don’t dance to too much Ice Spice.
CONGRATULATIONS, CLASS OF 2024!
The Spirit of Community
By supporting Lake Tahoe School, our community ensures that the gift of a transformative education will continue to be shared for generations to come. Every gift, big or small, makes a direct impact in the daily lives of our students and teachers.
Giving Tuesday Winter Market
Last holiday season, Lake Tahoe School hosted its first Giving Tuesday Winter Market, a community event to kick off the Holiday Season with a focus on giving back to the local community.
As guests entered Duffield Hall, they were instantly enveloped in the warm embrace of community spirit. Local small businesses showcased their unique creations, from cozy winter apparel and scented candles to skis and delightful gifts. Shoppers could pick up colorful handmade ornaments, crafted by students in the Lake Tahoe School MakerSpace class, as well as postcards featuring the beauty of Lake Tahoe in photographs taken by middle school photography students.
Gift baskets, brimming with goodies generously donated for the raffle by Lake Tahoe School parents for each class, added an element of excitement and anticipation. Not only were attendees eagerly waiting to see if they were a lucky winner, but the basket that attracted the most raffle tickets would win a prize for the associated class.
The true spirit of the evening shone through in the unwavering generosity of Lake Tahoe School’s community. Guests embraced the opportunity to give back, making contributions to the Sierra Community House food drive and selecting an ornament from the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Sierra giving tree that provided the opportunity to fulfill a child’s Christmas wish.
The Winter Market served as a powerful reminder of what the holiday season is all about: coming together with family and friends, as well as the transformative power of generosity.

Lake Tahoe School's Disco Gala
Disco Fever hit Lake Tahoe School last spring in a big way. To say that the Hyatt’s Lakeside ballroom was aglow and near-blinding at times would be an understatement. The fun and frivolity of the evening were kicked off with a choreographed dance by our teachers to "Night Fever." Even now, I can still hear the endless falsetto tones of the Bee Gees in my ears... Glitter and sequins aside, Lake Tahoe School’s 2024 Groovy Celebration Gala was an outstanding success – and a whole lot of fun!
Most importantly, the Paddle Raise portion of the evening was an even bigger succes, raising funds to support our faculty and the design and remodeling of their classrooms. With this initial total matched dollar for dollar through the generosity of Dave and Cheryl Duffield, our goal to spend these monies creating an even better teaching and learning environment for our children proved to be an inspiring project. When all is said and done, the evening’s success only enhanced our efforts at keeping our students at the center of all that we do best.
With the generous and ongoing support of innumerable families in our school community - whether by volunteering in the classroom or Café Days, attending numerous events throughout the year, or certainly donating monies at special activities and events such as our Annual Fund or Gala, we appreciate all that you do for Lake Tahoe School. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we are grateful each day that you entrust us with your children as we embark together on the learning experience that is life at Lake Tahoe School. Thank you!

Letters to our Teachers
Lake Tahoe School has always been more than just an institution; it's a community. And at the heart of this community are our dedicated teachers. This year, we embarked on a heartwarming project to highlight the profound impact our educators have on our students' lives.
For our annual Gala fund-a-need, we invited students to interview their teachers about their classroom needs. But we added a special twist: we secretly asked the students to write a letter to their teachers expressing their gratitude and sharing personal anecdotes about how their educators have shaped them.
As we listened to the interviews, it became abundantly clear that our teachers are more than just instructors; they are mentors, role models, and friends. They go above and beyond to ensure that our students' academic, athletic, artistic, social, and emotional needs are met.
The letters from the students were filled with heartfelt stories of inspiration, encouragement, and support. They spoke of teachers who believed in them when they doubted themselves, who pushed them to reach their full potential, and who made learning a joyful experience.
It's our teachers who create a nurturing environment where students feel safe, valued, and empowered. They are the heart and soul of our school, and their dedication to our students is truly remarkable.
THIS YEAR'S GALA RAISED OVER $250,000 FOR OUR CLASSROOM REDESIGN PROJECT.
One of the most important things about a good school is creating an optimal learning environment where students can thrive. The library is the perfect example of a space that has been carefully designed to promote literacy and learning. Our teachers do a fantastic job, and we want to give them and our students everything they need for the best learning experience possible.
Thanks to the generousity from our community, and a generous match donation from Dave and Cheryl Duffield, we were able to raise funds to impact the way we teach our students in the classroom.
This year's fund-a-need is a testament to the incredible work our teachers do. By supporting our school, our generous donors invest in the future of our community and helping to ensure that our students continue to receive the highest quality education.
The Power of Your Donations at Work
Thanks to your Annual Fund donations, Lake Tahoe School students get to enjoy...
An upgraded safe space for our students to visit the School Counselor

...and much more that makes
A new lounge in the Middle School locker area
A new PreK playground

Lake Tahoe School a special place to be!
A student-centered learning environment takes an abundance of resources. It takes individual attention from teachers, dedicated support from parents and family at home and opportunities that are as wellrounded and diverse as our students. From the bottom of our hearts... Thank you!

Community Partnerships
Supporting nonprofit and local organizations is essential to building a strong and vibrant community. These organizations provide vital services to our neighbors, friends, and family, and they rely on our support to thrive.
This is why Lake Tahoe School is committed to supporting nonprofit and local organizations in a number of ways. We donate money to organizations that are working to address important issues in our community, such as homelessness, poverty, and hunger. We also support fundraising events hosted by these organizations, and we facilitate community service days for our students to get involved.
We are proud of our commitment to supporting nonprofit and local organizations in our community.
Middle school students sort food at FISH in Carson City to help those in need.
Staff and Faculty support local nonprofits by sponsoring fundraising events.
Our middle school students partner with the Tahoe Fund for regularly scheduled East Shore Trail cleanups.
Lake Tahoe School hosted a giving tree for Big Brothers Big Sisters, as well as a food drive for Sierra Community House, at last year's Giving Tuesday Winter Market.
