This is us: Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township A growing, financially secure school district located in the northeast corner of Marion County, Lawrence Township (LT) serves over 16,000 students from pre-kindergarten through high school with a staff of 2,500 professionals, all of whom are invested in each student’s success. Through innovation and dedication, LT educates all students through graduation by offering rich programming for all ability levels and aspirations.

Our Journey to Excellence begins with building excellence in everything we do.

We are on a quest to strengthen the solid foundation of our schools.

The Blue Ribbon Facilities Plan is an example of how we are building excellence.

This investment of over $127 million dollars in our school facilities demonstrates our commitment to enhance the educational environment for all students and faculty members.

In addition, our goal to educate all students continues to be our cornerstone of excellence. The increased graduation rate of 92% is the highest in the history of Lawrence Township. We will continue to prepare young adults to be the next leaders.

The increased focus on academic rigor has created an environment where anything is possible for student success. Classroom teachers are well prepared to teach all students. Recognized throughout the state with awards and honors, we have superior professional development and training for our teachers which translates into innovation and dedication in our classrooms.

As a result of district-wide strategies, our corporation is focused on continuous improvement in all areas of our schools. This five-year plan is our sole focus and commitment to improving our students’ learning experiences. The theme “This is us” is very fitting for a school corporation that is on a mission to educate all students through graduation with innovation and dedication.

“ Opportunities began in elementary school at Crestview where I was a member of the production team for the student-led morning announcements. At Fall Creek Valley, I discovered my passion for engineering through the Project Lead the Way program. At Lawrence North, I continued this passion through electives at the McKenzie Center for Innovation and Technology. With the advanced equipment and great teachers, I learned about machines, problem solving, team work, manufacturing, and so much more. I have been able to get a head start on learning about the field through professional internships. Being a part of this township has given me a valuable education and experiences beyond the classroom that have taught me so much.”

Especially important to me has been Computer Technology. It has allowed me to find a passion for computers that will shape my college education and career, allowing me to become CompTIA certified now which led to an entry level job in the technology field as a high school student. This is an advantage unique to our township, as the broad offering really lets students specialize in a program to determine whether it will be a future fit for their career.

LTinvestments LT Schools prepare students for future opportunities that have yet to be defined.

This requires planning and investments in student-centric, innovative programs, welcoming state of the art facilities, and the supporting infrastructure that serves 16,000 students and 2,500 employees. It also requires investments in training and professional development for LT employees to ensure excellence in class instruction, student experiences, and business operations. Future success depends on current vision.

Planning for the future Every LT student deserves a vibrant, safe environment that is conducive to learning and experiencing. Moreover, growth requires capacity planning.

In the third year of the multi-year, Blue Ribbon Facilities Plan, which addresses interior and exterior renovations and expansions in every school building, the $127M capital campaign will be accomplished without a local tax referendum. Projects completed and/or in process since 2015 include:

■ M R. JEFF MANN FROM BELZER MIDDLE SCHOOL WAS NAMED THE FIRST CHAMPION OF MSD OF LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP’S EXCELLENCE DESIGN CHALLENGE, RECEIVING A $20,000 CASH PRIZE. The Excellence Design Challenge is an annual program designed to foster and reward teacher creativity and innovation, sponsored by the Lawrence Township School Foundation.

Mr. Mann’s project, ROADS Scholar, will be implemented during the 2017-2018 school year.

■ L AWRENCE NORTH MATH TEACHER, BECKY HUFTY, AND LAWRENCE CENTRAL LANGUAGE ARTS TEACHER, LINUS PECK, WERE NAMED FINALISTS FOR OUTSTANDING TEACHING IN AP CALCULUS AND AP LANGUAGE ARTS, RESPECTIVELY. They were also

recognized for their impact on an increasing number of students enrolling in AP courses in the AP-TIP Program sponsored by Notre Dame.

■ T HE MSD OF LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP WAS AGAIN NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED BY THE NAMM FOUNDATION AS A BEST COMMUNITY FOR MUSIC EDUCATION. ■ T HE MSD OF LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP WAS AWARDED A $50,000 ELI LILLY ENDOWMENT PLANNING GRANT. This will support strategic planning initiatives within student supports and services.

LTpartnerships Cooperation, collaboration, and communication are essential to excellence.

Forging partnerships within the community expands the depth and breadth of services and opportunities for LT students, families, and staff. Partnering with business, civic, educational, and philanthropic organizations fulfills a variety of needs, thus, enhancing the overall student experience.

Partners provide assistance, guidance, and hands-on experiences to complement student circumstances and to supplement classroom instruction.

My desire to raise my family here stems from my experience as a student.

1. T O INCREASE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT, AS MEASURED BY END OF COURSE ASSESSMENTS (ECA) AND ISTEP SCORES: With emphasis on rigor and effective curriculum delivery, the goal is to improve student achievement on all performance measures.

2. T O INCREASE THE OVERALL GRADUATION RATE AND INCREASE THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS GRADUATING WITH AN HONORS DIPLOMA: For the 2016-2017 school year, the graduation rate was 92%. With the end goal being a 95% graduation rate*, in the last three years, the graduation rate has increased by 5 percentage points due to graduation progress monitoring, student accountability meetings, and credit recovery programs.

3. TO EMPOWER EMPLOYEES TO POSITIVELY IMPACT STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT: LT is focused on investing in

employee-centric programs such as professional development and leadership opportunities to complement the competitive salary and benefits package. In 2016, LT Schools had a 90% employee retention rate compared to the industry average of 84% (Learning Policy Institute, 2016).

4. T O MAINTAIN A STRONG FISCAL OUTLOOK: With trending growth projected, anticipating needs and allocating

resources to serve LT students is a priority. Due to the timing of the State of Indiana funding receipts, the Board goal is to maintain a $10M cash reserve at the end of the fiscal year to offset the fluctuations in the cash balance in the general fund. LT also maintains a $4.5M Rainy Day Fund. Financially, the school district is solidly positioned for growth and investment in students, employees, facilities, and infrastructure.

5. TO INCREASE AWARENESS AND BUILD COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS BY SHOWCASING THE DISTRICT’S

2014-15 school year, over 1300 new students have chosen LT Schools, making it one of the fastest growing districts in Indiana. In order to connect with families, employees, and the greater community, the multifaceted approach to share Lawrence Township information includes print, verbal, digital, and social media communication as well as community forums and events.

6. TO CONTINUE TO IMPLEMENT A DISTRICT-WIDE STRATEGIC PLAN: LT embarked upon a strategic planning process in 2015 in anticipation of future growth and needs through the year 2020. In the third year of implementation, the 5 year commitment is to advance every academic and operational area within Lawrence Township Schools.
