The Business of Running the LT Schools Corporation

Pillars of EXCELLENCE

“Our mission as a public school corporation is to cultivate excellence in every student, regardless of circumstances. We are dedicated to providing an outstanding education that not only leads to graduation but also inspires lifelong learning. Our commitment is to offer exceptional, innovative academic and extracurricular programs within dynamic learning environments. From pre-Kindergarten through high school, we strive for excellence and equitable student outcomes, empowering each individual to surpass expectations and confidently pursue their post-graduation aspirations.” Dr. Shawn A. Smith, Superintendent

Welcome to Lawrence Township Schools, the 5th largest public school district in Indiana. Over 16,000 students and their families are served by 2,500 employees who are committed to Excellence.

The mission focused requirement for Excellence is the basis of every recommendation and decision related to programs, policies, and procedures, as well as in communications, actions, and expectations for students and staff.

It is underscored in the Vision to be the District of Destination where Excellence empowers everyone to reach their full potential.

It is evident in the Mission through innovation and dedication, supporting all students on their educational pathways to graduation, college, and career.

It is reinforced in LT Schools Core Values of:

Achievement: We are committed to striving for excellence and maximizing performance and potential of each individual student in an environment where race/ethnicity, gender, and family income are not predictors of success.

Integrity: We embrace our differences, treating everyone with dignity, honesty, and fairness. We are entrusted to be inclusive and transparent.

Service: We are servant leaders, listening and responding to the needs of the school community; focusing on continuous improvement, measurable results, stakeholder voice, and stakeholder satisfaction; and contributing to making our community a place where people feel welcome and well-served regardless of race/ethnicity, gender, family income, religion, or sexual orientation/gender identity.

It is reiterated in the LT Schools Equity Statement. We believe that students of all races and ethnicities can meet or exceed State standards and Corporation graduation requirements when they are effectively taught and held to high expectations. The MSD of Lawrence Township defines educational equity as, “A state in which dimensions of privilege, skin color, and economic status are not predictive of, or correlated with, educational outcomes in any significant way, and where all learners are able to participate fully in quality learning experiences.” Dr. Vernita Mayfield, executive Summary, MSDLT Equity Audit.

Because of this integrated culture of Excellence and continuous improvement, enhanced core competencies have emerged. These pillars of expertise define the LT Schools advantage which translates into unparalleled opportunities for students.

On behalf of the MSD of Lawrence Township Board of Education, we thank you, our community, for the honor you bestow on the MSD of Lawrence Township to educate our children and give them the skills and experiences they need to succeed for the rest of their lives. Our 95% graduation rate is the result of our strong mission statement, board goals, strategic planning, and a commitment to equitable outcomes. We recognize our community who worked alongside us to create these important goals that continue to serve us well.

Our students’ success is the culmination of the combined efforts of every teacher, coach, counselor, bus driver, food service employee, maintenance team member, administrator, safety officer, and family member who devote their life’s work to our children. We thank you all.

And lest you think that our graduation rate is our only point of pride, open the pages of this booklet to celebrate our year as the District of Destination.

Yours in service,

Superintendent

College & Career Pathways

Long before the Indiana Department of Education implemented graduation pathways requirements, LT Schools recognized every student’s unique pathway, from start to finish, by providing options to coincide with each student’s interests and strengths, ensuring a comprehensive education by incorporating choice, digital tools, and innovative curriculum, in a progressive learning environment. Regardless of a student’s post-graduation plans, the LT Schools experience is a launching pad for a lifetime of opportunities and endless possibilities. In a learning community this vast, the definition of success and the pathway to achieve it are as diverse as our students.

The choices begin in Kindergarten at the NAEYC accredited Early Learning Centers (ELC). Each elementary school choice is themed to align with student passions at all ability levels, exposing them to concepts as an introduction to future possibilities. During middle school, students further explore options, including career awareness experiences, as they start to hone in on their potential pathway to graduation.

LT Schools developed the Next Level Programs of Study which walks high school students through four years of experiential learning in classrooms, labs, mentorships, internships, and certifications, regardless of whether a student is college or career bound, or entering the military. Through Next Level Programs of Study, some students will discover a passion and launching point for a life-long career by gaining valuable experience and applying new skills, while potentially earning both high school and college credits.

Members of the Class of 2024 enrolled in over fifty post-secondary programs, including public and private colleges & universities, HBCUs, Ivy League institutions, and federal service academies.

It is an honor to walk with students on their educational journey.

“From a young age, our daughter wanted to be a doctor She loved science and math, so we enrolled her in the LT STEM elementary school, and she continued that focus in middle school. In high school she took 4 years of Bio-Medical Sciences at MCIT and decided a career in medicine was not her future after all. We were so thankful she could figure that out before she went to college versus switching majors after an investment of time and money. ”—LT High School Parent

Bilingual Education DISTINCTION

What started in 1994 as a Spanish Immersion magnet program at a single elementary school has become a nationally recognized, progressive dual language curriculum offered at multiple schools at every grade level. This enriched model of instruction values not only the use of two or more languages, but also addresses socio-cultural competence. Taught by an international, bilingual, and diverse staff, students are immersed in an authentic and rigorous learning environment. All Lawrence Township Immersion schools are members of the International Spanish Academies(ISAs) which are educational centers known for their academic prestige.

Driven by the needs and desires of the LT community, the demand for this cohesive and integrated curricular focus has grown exponentially. The seamless transitions from kindergarten through graduation culminate with a Certificate of Multilingual Proficiency from the State of Indiana along with their Lawrence Township diploma. Students also receive a diploma from the International Spanish Academies. By embracing and incorporating the cultural, linguistic, and ethnic diversity of staff and students, these high-achieving bilingual and biliterate students have a multi-cultural understanding, appreciation for differences, and find strength in diversity, preparing them for our global society.

Number of students enrolled in Bilingual Education: 4,952

Number of schools with Bilingual Classes:

3 Early Learning Centers

7 Elementary schools

all 4 Secondary schools

“What I love about the dual language immersion program in Lawrence Township is how our students become bilingual and biliterate, receiving a very rigorous education from native Spanish-speaking teachers who come from different parts of the world. Therefore, students are not only learning a second language, they are learning cultures and traditions, and they are becoming global citizens little by little from kindergarten to senior year.

I really love being their teacher at the high school level because I look at them and think , now you are ready to conquer the world. Their lives, their relationships and connections, their experiences will be different thanks to Lawrence Township.” —LN Teacher

Winner of the Excellence in Student Pathways Award from the Indiana Department of Education, MCIT serves only LT students. With the motto of “Where Everything is Possible”, MCIT offers a variety of Career and Technical Education classes which satisfy graduation pathways requirements and allow students to earn dual credits as well as industry certifications.

Education goes beyond the walls of a classroom. Many of these elective programs of study span 4 years, and students gladly commit to a multi-year course of study in order to complete the program or certification. The engaging, state-of-the-art, technical learning labs and simulators, project and work-based learning, along with community partnerships and internships, advance LT Schools students beyond traditional academics.

For students who continue their education beyond high school, these programs offer a host of benefits including college credit, connections to meaningful employment opportunities, and transferable skills for any career. For students entering the workforce upon graduation, successful completion of one of these programs with authentic interactions and experiences prepares them to earn a livable wage in high demand fields, offering a chance to advance quickly.

Our student was recently accepted into Purdue University’s Veterinary Scholars program, which is incredibly competitive and highly selective. It guarantees her a spot in a future DVM class at Purdue.

Why does this matter? Because she was qualified for this honor thanks to her MCIT BioMed coursework and externship at a veterinary clinic. That is an amazing program and put her in direct contact with doctors and clinicians, who gave her a professional, authentic hands-on experience. She had long conversations with the doctors there, which really helped her flesh out her essays for the Vet Scholars application. I think McKenzie should definitely put this on its list of “Amazing MCIT Student Achievements.”

Jaylah Lampley (LC) was honored at the 2023-2024 Gatorade Indiana Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

LAWRENCE CENTRAL GIRLS BASKETBALL ARE THE STATE CHAMPIONS!

It was a dream turned reality for the Lawrence Central Girls Basketball team, who for the first time in school history, won the Class 4A State championship in February 2024. And Coach Jannon Lampley also made history across Indiana as the first Black female coach to lead her team to a state victory. Coach Lampley called the win the result of a season of discipline and laser focus.

Coach Lampley and her staff helped lead the team to a 30-1 record on the season. In addition to the State Championship title, they walked away with Conference, Marion County, Regional, and Semi-State Championship wins.

For Coach Lampley’s players, her inspiration goes well beyond the basketball court as she builds bonds with her players and teaches goal setting and having the courage to commit 100%. She works with her student-athletes to conduct themselves as champions both on and off of the court.

While Coach Lampley celebrates this State title, she’s looking forward to doing the same next season!

Coach Jannon Lampley (LC Basketball) is the first Black female head coach in Indiana to win a state title.
