The recreational red snapper season opened June 1 in federal waters, and for the first time in many years, it occurred during a weather window that produced calm seas

and light winds. Hoards of anglers ran offshore to catch their two fish each in everything from flats boats to large, sportfishing yachts. More consistent limits of larger snapper were caught by those running offshore out of the Coastal Bend, while up-

per coast anglers were plagued by numbers of undersized fish. Trey Thumann and Josh Wrenn ran offshore about 15 miles in an easterly direction out of Packery Channel in Thumann’s bay boat, and caught quick limits of red

snapper in the 10-15-pound range on Spanish sardines on opening day. “It’s not often that the opening day of the recreational red snapper season in federal waters occurs during calm conditions, and we weren’t going to pass up the Please turn to page 19

Lone Star Outdoor News On Aug. 27, 2004, Lone Star Outdoor News published its first issue with a goal of producing the best source for actual news about the outdoors in the state. The current issue, more than 20 years later, is its 500th. The last 20 years has seen big changes in the outdoor and media industries. Outdoor columns and writers in newspapers across the state faded away, and several publications went the digital route or closed. “We always felt good content would prevail,” LSON’s founder David J. Sams said. “We never thought print was dead like so many people claimed.” Coverage over the years provided readers with up-to-date information on fishing and hunting across the state, along with industry and fair and balanced coverage of legislative and regulatory issues. The years included several news highlights, like a world-record bass caught in Japan; speckled Please turn to page 6

Public riverbed summer buck By Nate Skinner

Streams and riverbeds across the Lone Star State with an average width of 30 feet or more from their mouth up, are considered navigable, and can therefore be hunted as public land. It is only legal to hunt these waterways with a shotgun loaded with shotshells — shotgun slugs are not allowed. Miguel Morales was well aware of

these regulations, and knew of a riverbed in the Texas Hill Country that met the requirements and had frequent traffic from axis herds. He had been wanting to try his hand at pursuing axis in the waterway with a shotgun. On a whim, Morales gave his idea a shot with a buddy, and he ended up harvesting a mature axis buck at 23 yards with 12 gauge #00 buckshot. “I was hunting with my buddy, Bryson Catlett, and we actually called
