Sunrise on a new season Texas rifle opens with a bang By Nate Skinner
For Lone Star Outdoor News The Texas general season for white-tailed deer opened November 1, and hunters were greeted with what many would describe as ideal conditions. Temperatures were fairly cool across the state on opening morning, the result of a cold front passing through. Reports indicated steady movement from young bucks and does. However, some hunters were lucky enough to score a shot opportunity at a mature buck, while others enjoyed the cooler weather and their time in the outdoors. Matthew Ebrom hunted opening morning on a family property in Wilson County where he said the deer movement was pretty good. “The weather was nice and cool, and there were quite a few bucks and does moving around the feeder I was overlooking at sunrise,” Ebrom said. “The younger bucks still seemed to be hanging out together, while the more mature bucks were off by themselves doing their own thing.” Ebrom said he did not see any bucks pushing does around, but he heard some reports from buddies in other portions of Wilson County that young bucks were starting to chase does. On the second day of the season, Ebrom sat for an evening hunt on a property he leases in Atascosa County, where he saw a good number of does and young bucks. The mature bucks were not coming to corn. Katie Montalvo harvested a mature 10-point buck on her husband’s family’s property in Medina County, called the Zuercher Ranch, on open-

Serious momentum Bull reds and slots aggressive as tides drop By Nate Skinner
For Lone Star Outdoor News Redfish action along the coast has gained some serious momentum since the arrival of the first fall cold fronts. Water levels have finally dropped, and the fish aren’t nearly as scattered as they had been with the above-average tides. Bull reds are consistently being caught along stretches of the surf, in channels and passes, and along the jetties. Slot reds and some oversized redfish are cruising the flats, marshes, and back lakes, as well. Anglers fishing shallow have had good success sight casting to redfish with soft plastics, and natural baits have been bringing plenty of fish to hand, as well. A cool opening morning greeted hunters in Texas, with some lucky enough to lift a trophy as the sun rose on another season. Photo by David J. Sams, Lone Star Outdoor News.

public hunt draw – those who drew will still get to hunt despite the current government shutdown. “The hunters who were drawn were notified and those hunts are still happening,” said TPWD’s Public Hunting Coordinator Kelly Edmiston. “(Those properties) do keep a number of furloughed employees. It might be a skeleton crew. The visitor center might not be open and the check-in or orientation might be virtual, but there will be someone there.”
