PTA President’s Message Hello Roadrunners! I am Nivie Jhawar and I have the honor of serving as your PTA President. On behalf of the PTA, I’d like to welcome you to the 20102011 school year! “Get in Gear” is our theme this year and you will see it woven throughout our spirit wear, flyers, activities and classrooms. We want to promote a healthy lifestyle that includes fitness, healthy eating and a solid educational experience for all Laguna Roadrunners!

PTA Reflections October Book Fair Turkey Trot Fundraiser begins

I hope it has been a smooth transition for you and your kids so far! The kids are having a great time exploring their new classes and settling in to their classroom routines. The PTA has been hard at work “Getting in Gear,” for the upcoming year by getting the students’ “Tuesday folders” ready before school started, welcoming back our beloved teachers/staff with a delicious luncheon, organizing the volunteer sign-ups for all classrooms and various other PTA committees and selling Spirit wear and Spirit bands. In addition, PTA had quite a turnout at its first meeting of the year. Lots of new parents attended and the meeting proved quite successful! What a great start to a wonderful year at Laguna Road School! A reminder to all of you…..PTA meetings are held the second Tuesday’s of each month, at 8:45am in the School Library. Come to a meeting! I showed up to my first meeting when my son was in kindergarten…and I figured, I would just go and see what PTA “was all about.” Little did I know the awesome experience that was awaiting me. I left that first meeting feeling fully informed about what was going on at our school both on campus and at the district level. And ultimately, I felt good that I was able to volunteer my time and support the school, teachers and staff who were going to be responsible for educating my 3 children in the coming years. This is why I joined PTA! I just want to encourage you….if you even have the tiniest inkling to check out a PTA meeting….please come! We are a very friendly bunch and we have a lot of fun! It’s the best way to keep tabs on what is going on with your child’s education….and it’s a great way to meet some wonderful people! Our next meeting is on Tuesday, October 12 at 8:45 am in the School Library. Please come and bring a friend! We also welcome your young kids, so don’t let that be a reason to keep you away! We do offer a “Korean Outreach Group” who conducts the PTA business in Korean! Those meetings are held on Wednesdays at 11am, in the Pit. We’d love to see you at one of these PTA meetings – so please join us! If you are interested in helping out with PTA or a PTA committee….please let me know! We could use ANY amount of help that you are willing to offer…from 1 hour to 100 hours….we have something for everyone! PTA still needs a 2 Vice President – Ways & Means and possibly a Math Olympiad Chairperson…. so please contact me if you are interested! continued on page 3 th

Go Roadrunners! Beep Beep!

Hello and welcome all of our new and returning families to Laguna Road School for the 2010-11 school year, and to the first issue of our on-line PTA newsette. We hope all of you had an enjoyable and restful summer vacation. The school year began with the count of students at 623. We look forward to an exciting successful school year. There have been a few staff changes since last year. We are pleased to welcome and introduce these new staff members: ! Ms. Penny Endicott, 1st grade teacher ! Mrs. Jennifer Kim-Lee, K&1 grade teacher We are also fortunate to have six associate teachers from California State University, Fullerton with us the first semester. ! Ms. Amanda Albright with Mrs. Green, Kindergarten ! Mr. James Hoa with Mrs. Lawson, Grade 2 ! Ms. Jessica Williams with Mrs. Jurgensen/Mrs. Nguyen, Grade 1 ! Ms. April Young with Mrs. Ann Nicholes, Grade 2 ! Ms. Kim Klippel with Mrs. Wilson, Grade 5 ! Ms. Liz Holcomb with Mrs. Winthrop, Grade 3 Also, we have a student teacher from BIOLA University, LaMirada, with us the first semester. ! Ms. Kamden Guy with Mrs. Frutchey, Grade 3 A special thanks to Mrs. Nivie Jhawar, our fabulous PTA President, the PTA Executive Board, and the Hospitality Committee for the marvelous "Welcome Back Staff Luncheon." The luncheon was terrific and a great way to start the year. Reminder - This year our sixth grade students will need to raise $407 per student to attend the Outdoor Science School (OSS) and end of the year activities. They need ALL our support for their fundraisers. Individual sixth grade students can be designated to receive monies earned from the fundraisers for OSS. A welcome back to school message would not be complete without a reminder to motorists of the adjustments we must all make. Those school crosswalks and white loading and unloading zones will be filled with cars and kids. Our crossing guards and traffic guards should be given a bit more courtesy. Please follow all the curb markings and the directions of our staff crossing guards. This year the white zones will be extended all the way to the MPR. The safety of our students is a TOP priority. SUGGESTIONS: • The worst traffic comes in 10 minutes before the bell rings. Get to school 15 minutes early. • Follow signs that say no stopping or no parking. • Make sure you can see students in crosswalks. • Don’t use cell phones when driving. REMINDER: Per Information for Parents 2010-11 school year handbook. Regarding Site Supervision. Supervision of students on school property is available 15 minute before the school day officially begins and 15 minutes after the school day officially ends. Please do not send, drop off or have your child present at the school site prior to or after the stated school hours, as the Fullerton School District cannot assume any liability for the students' safety.

PTA Presidents Message continued from page 1 And don’t forget to SIGN-UP for PTA membership! Only $7 per member! This money is vital as it allows PTA to further support various school and classroom activities. Applications have been sent home in your Tuesday folders, but are still available in the school office! For those of you who have already been generously volunteering your time either on campus, in the classroom, or in your home (i.e. cutting/pasting various class projects), a great big THANK YOU is in order! Keep up the great work! Just remember to sign in when you arrive on campus AND log in your hours in the office volunteer notebook. We do count the hours up and turn them in to the District PTA. Can you believe that last year our school alone had around 32,000 volunteer hours?!?!? That is phenomenal! What a wonderful way to support our teachers and in turn, enrich our children’s educational experience here at Laguna Road!!! Lastly, I have just a few reminders about upcoming events. We will be hosting our School’s “Fall Book Fair” during the week of October 4 . Look for more information in your child’s Tuesday Folder! This is a perfect way to stock up on those books for your child’s “Reading Logs.” And don’t forget to check with your teacher to see if there are any books that you can buy and donate for your child’s classroom! Also, the Reflections Contest is starting up. The theme this year is “Together we Can.” Please encourage your child to participate! It is such a neat program for kids to express themselves artistically! We will also be holding a week-long “dining out fundraiser” at Ruby’s Diner. The week-long program will allow your family more flexibility when choosing your night to “dine out.” More details to come….And of course….can’t forget about our BIG PTA fundraiser – the Turkey Trot – coming up in November! Last year we raised a tremendous amount ($20,000!!) for our kids and our school. Let’s see if we can top it this year! Remember….this is the PTA’s only “BIG FUNDRAISER” this year….. Show your School Spirit! Every Wednesday at Laguna Road is Spirit Day, and new this year are Spirit bands. They are rubber bracelets in the Blue & Gold school colors for only $1.00. Show your spirit & wear your Laguna Road tee shirt or sweatshirt and spirit band. If you do not own a tee shirt or sweatshirt you can wear the school colors of blue and yellow & still show your school spirit. Classrooms with 100% participation receive school spirit recognition each Wednesday. Spirit bands are available for purchase in the office. There are 2 sizes available a 7 inch band great for grades K-4th & a 8 inch band that is great for 4th – graders - Adult. GO ROADRUNNERS!!

However in college I majored in history and minored in political science.! I like to drink water, Diet Coke, Fresca, and coffee with half and half. Roadrunners: Get Ready to Strut your stuff! 2nd Annual Laguna Road PTA TURKEY TROT Gobble, Gobble…it is that time of year when PTA holds its’ annual Turkey Trot. PTA continues to encourage our students to exercise and be healthy while raising money all at the same time! How it works: Students will receive sponsor forms in their Tuesday Folders on October 5th . Their job is to go out and ask family and friends to make a donation to Laguna Road PTA for running on November 3rd (Kindergarten) and 4th (1st through 6th -grades). The kids run as many laps as they can during their PE time. We have a special contest for the teachers who have a chance to earn an extra prize for class spirit. We are asking that each student fundraise to “marathon” level! That means raising $26.20 per student. If we have all of our students raise the marathon-level amount, that means we will raise about $15,500. That would cover most of our expenses for the school year. If you raise the “Ultra-Trotter” level ($100), those students will be invited to a special post-race party where all students raising over $100 will be entered into a drawing for top prizes. We can always use volunteers the day of the event to help us cut up fruit and stock up on water. Please email nbenda@roadrunner.com to do so. This is PTA’s big fundraiser of the year, so we hope you will join us in making this a HUGE success.

This is a reminder to ALWAYS use the designated crosswalks when crossing the street and give Brian Burke a smile as you cross safely to school. Please follow all the curb markings and the directions of the staff crossing guards. The white zones are for Drop Off & Pick Up ONLY. You are NOT allowed to leave your vehicle parked in the white zone out of courtesy to others and for the safety or our students. Be a role model for your children.

Get In Gear and Join Laguna Road PTA Today! Thank you to everyone who has signed up, but we still need more members! We need about 100 more members to reach our goal for this year! Please consider joining today and help support your child's classroom. Remember, your membership is giving the students an opportunity to participate in a variety of programs and activities. So, don't delay and fill out the form with your $7 and help support Laguna Road PTA today! Laguna Road PTA membership fees help provide additional programs and equipment that the students and teachers need throughout the school year. Our PTA money helps support the following: 6th grade play, All the Arts, Blue and Gold Day, Day of the Reader, FirstAid Kits, School-wide Emergency Preparedness Supplies, Honorary Services Awards, Laguna Roadrunner Awards, Media Center, Nutritional Snacks during Testing Month, PE Equipment, Student Programs and Assemblies, Reflections, Resource Center, Speech Center, Tech Lab, Tuesday Folders and Library Books. As a PTA member you also receive exclusive savings and offers from a variety of companies which include: Barnes and Noble, Southwest Airlines, T-Mobile, Legoland and Jamba Juice. The PTA is an important part of Laguna Road as it joins parents, teachers and the community together to promote the welfare of children at school.
