Roadrunner Awards International Day Laguna Road Talent Show Wonderland Gala Donors

Congratulations to our 2013 Roadrunner Award Recipients: Mrs. Lizette Kizziar Mrs. Phuong Meza Mrs. Sonal Thakker. The 2013 Roadrunner Awards ceremony was held on January 23, 2013, during our evening general PTA meeting and was well attended by Laguna Road School's award- winning choir, parents and teachers. The Laguna Road School PTA has a time-honored tradition of recognizing individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service to our school by bestowing on them our Roadrunner Award at a special evening PTA General Meeting held in January. The Laguna Road School Roadrunner Award honors individuals who have gone above and beyond for our students, teachers and the school as a whole. This year's award recipients exemplify the meaning of going above and beyond. Mrs. Lizette Kizziar, a very active PTA member who has served as Hospitality Chair and volunteered on too many committees to list. With her abundant energy and talent (an accomplished baker and creative genius!), she has been a key member of the Support Our School Foundation for two years and is responsible for bringing the annual GALA to this school. Dubbed the "GALA Queen" by our PTA President, Lizette has worked tirelessly to make the Gala a beautiful & successful fundraising event. Mrs. Phuong Meza has been Laguna Road School's personal shopper, designer and Spirit Wear Guru. She has been room mom for almost every one of the 7 years her children have been at this school. On a whim, she sewed all the Oompah Loompah costumes for last year's 6th grade play. Not to mention that our dear Phuong has been the Go-To Person whenever we need last minute help with guest services-related hospitality. (The spring rolls she BUYS are amazing!) Although this is only Sonal Thakker and her daughter, Ritisha's, 2nd year at Laguna Road, Mrs. Thakker has made an indelible mark as a consummate volunteer. She has jumped in with with both feet as co-room mom, event photographer, Sam's Club runner, Reflections Chairperson, Tuesday Bulletin co-manager & director, along with volunteering for almost every committee our PTA has to offer! These ladies are truly an indispensable members of our Laguna Road Volunteer Family. Thank you Lizette, Phuong, and Sonal for all that you do!

These are the different ways to say “Hello” in the 17 languages represented here at Laguna Road School. We are pretty International, wouldn’t you say? Laguna Road celebrated The Lunar New Year this year “International style” on February 6, 2013. Students, teachers, and parents proudly paraded in costumes from their heritages and celebrated diversity at our school. Lunar New Year is the most important festival of the Chinese Year. It has been celebrated in most of the Eastern Asian countries for over 3.000 years. There are public celebrations all over the world with Lion and Dragon dances and parades with traditional costumes. Presents of money are given at New Year in a red envelope with good luck characters on it. Red is a lucky color and will bring good luck to the person receiving it. Laguna Road students and staffed were treated to a dance performance by the Kwan Gyu Lim Dance Company and a musical performance with the Gu Zheng instrument by the artist, Bei Bei. Kwan Gyu Lim Dance Company Kwan Gyu Lim Dance Company is a non-profit company whose performers are strictly volunteers. Their organization’s artistic mission is to bring to their audience creative and contemporary performances that have their roots in the Korean traditional culture. Three dances were performed at the celebration: 1) Janggo Chum: As one of the most rhythmic dances in the world, this dance is one of the renowned works in Korean classic dance. Performers: Tiffani Jung, Young Sim Kim, Myoung Jin Kim; 2) Jindo Buk Chum: Jindo Drum Dance traditionally performed in rice farming villages in order to ensure and to celebrate good harvest. This dance is performed with drumsticks in hand and uses strong drum rhythm (Buk) freely. Performer: Christina Chun, and 3) Buchae Chum (Korean fan dance): The bright beautiful world created by Korean women is transformed into a flower. With fans and exquisite costumes, the Buchae Chum is considered not only the most beautiful traditional Korean dance but also one of the most magnificent dances in the world. Performers: Tiffani Jung, Young Sim Kim, Myoung Jin Kim, Hyesung Yoon, and Soo Young Shim Gu Zheng instrument Gu Zheng is a traditional Chinese string instrument with a wooden body and usually 21 strings on top of the sound board. The strings are set on top of a movable wooden bridge with ornate symbols engraved. Bei Bei the artist that played for us started to play the Gu Zheng when she was 7 years old. She practiced 2 hours a day during weekdays and 4 hours on the week-end. She started to get good at playing the Gu Zheng and showed great talent. She then decided to pursue a career in music. When she was 18, she went to college in Hong Kong. After graduation, she came to California in 2003. Since then, she has been performing, composing music and teaching the Gu Zheng. Music is what she loves and what she does for work and for fun.

Try Your Best. Be Active. Be A Good Friend. Jump Rope for Heart Day at Laguna Road School. The day was a success on many levels. Together, we raised $12,500 for the American Heart Association. The students really did a good job this year — not just begging their parents for donations but in participating themselves no matter the size of the donation. Our amazing Jump Rope Club, led by Mrs. Ochoa, kicked off the primary and upper grade Jump Rope times. Students also participated as a grade level in Healthy Heart Rotations. We had many experts in the field of fitness, medicine, and nutrition on campus that day sharing their health information with our students. One of the highlights this year was one of our speakers for 5th grade. The American Heart Association sent Mrs. Angela Eilers to speak to the students about her daughter's journey with heart surgery. Your Physical Education Team was very impressed and proud of the Laguna Road Students that day.
