Principal’s Message We are on the way with 679 students enrolled! This is our highest student enrollment in our school’s history. Welcome to our newest staff member, Mrs. Kristin Lipiz. Mrs. Lipiz is our three days per week Speech and Language Specialist. Kristin is coming to us after years at Woodcrest Elementary School. We have such a fabulous working, dedicated group of staff members. I can already see that we have committed parents who strongly support their children’s many endeavors. Special thanks to our new PTA President, Mrs. Helen Kharrat and the PTA Hospitality Committee for providing a “Welcome Back Breakfast” for the staff. We are definitely destined for greatness this year and the years ahead! On Friday, August 24th, we held our first Staff Development meeting of the year, we met as a staff to discuss our Benchmarks and CST test scores. This is good news for all of us! We looked at our scores in depth at each grade level, grades K-6 to determine where we are doing well and where we need to focus our efforts. I look forward to working with you this year, as we strive to offer a strong educational program with high standards for student behavior, as well as academic achievement. Working together, we will achieve our goals and hopefully surpass them. Sincerely, Harold Sullivan Principal

Why Parents Matter Getting Involved in school can help your child get a better education. Supporting your child’s learning

Every Reader is a Star!

doesn’t just feel nice, it also makes a significant difference in a child’s performance.

1.

What it is: Parent involvement can include things as different as quizzing your child on spelling words,

volunteering in a classroom, or taking tickets at the school carnival. As long as your actions show that you value education, your child is likely to respond.

2.

Why it matters: Decades of research shows that when parents get involved in their children’s education, kids do better in and out of school. Parent involvement is tied to higher test scores, social skills and improved behavior.

PTA President’s Message Hello Roadrunners! My name is Helen Kharrat, and I have the honor of serving as your new PTA president.

On behalf of the PTA, I’d like to

welcome you to the 2012-2013 school year! We have exciting events planned for your children this year: two (2) Book fairs, Reflections Arts Program, International Walk to School Day, our Turkey Trot Jog-a-thon, Father & Daughter dance, Mother & Son event, two roller skating parties and an International Folkloric Assembly just to name a few. The PTA has a new theme this year which is “We’re Dis5nguished Here!” As you probably know, this past spring, our school was recognized as a California Dis5nguished school for the fiFh 5me, an honor bestowed on very few schools in Southern California. Collabora5ve efforts between our Principal, teachers, staff, parent-‐volunteers and of course, our hard working students, made this happen. You will see our theme woven throughout our spirit wear, flyers, and various school ac5vi5es. We want our students to know how precious and dis5nguished they are to us! Our MoPo in PTA is “Working Together To Serve Our Children”. We do this through volunteering in the classroom & on

campus and through running special programs geared to enrich our children’s educational experience. So far this year, we’ve been hard at work getting the students’ “Tuesday Folders” ready before school started, providing the students with agenda books, welcoming back our beloved teachers/staff with a breakfast, and organizing the volunteer sign-ups for classrooms and various PTA committees. We have started selling spirit wear, where we’ve added exciting new colors. Be sure to check those out! A BIG thank you to all the volunteers that have helped make all of this happen! PTA meetings are held the Second Tuesday of each month at 8:45 a.m.in the school library. We also offer a “Korean Outreach Group” which conducts the PTA meetings in Korean. Those meetings are held on Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. in the Pit. We are a fun, friendly group here at PTA and we would love for you to join us. We could use any amount of help from 1 hour to 100 hours. We can accommodate different schedules, and we welcome your little ones. There are even ways for you to help out from the comfort of your home. Please consider coming to one of our meetings where you will feel fully informed about what is going on at our school and at the district level. PTA is a great arena for any suggestions, inquiries or a way for you to voice your concerns. We invite you to be part of your children’s world at school. Join their activities & events and support their teachers & staff who will be responsible for educating them in the coming years. Your children will love to see you on campus or involved in the classroom. I know for a fact, my three children do! Lastly, I have just a few reminders about upcoming events. Our “Reflections” Program launches September 17th, and all entries are due to the office no later than October 18th. Theme this year is “The Magic Of The Moment”. Last year our school had the highest entries submitted to the district, and six of our students won at district level. Let’s do even better this year! Please encourage your children to participate. Our first Roller Skating Party is Friday, October 5th. Kids loved having their teachers skate with them last year! Also, let’s not forget about our Big PTA fundraiser: the Turkey Trot Jog-a-thon drive starting October 9th. Not only does this event promote physical education and healthy living, but it also helps support all the programs we have planned for our children. Thank you for being part of our Laguna Road family. Please know that your opinion matters to us at PTA, and we would love to get your input. Let us all work together to serve our children! Helen Kharrat, Your PTA President ha.kharrat@hotmail.com 4

October is Walk to School Month, a time period for students, parents, families, & school staff to walk to school. Laguna Road School is participating with a

Walk to School Day celebration on Wednesday, October 3, 2012.

Why Walk to School? • To teach safe walking skills to our children. • To reduce traffic congestion and air pollution near our school. • To promote regular physical activity for our children. • To enjoy being out and about in our community. • Let’s work together to make our community a safe and friendly place to walk.

“Here Comes the Sun.” A new mural & garden outside Room 12 have been dedicated to Ms. Lawson and Ms. Platon in honor of Laguna Road School’s 50th Anniversary by members of the Kindergarten Class of 2010-2011. Our gratitude to the following students and their families who made the amazing mural and garden area possible:

Access. Ideas. Answers. A public library is the most enduring of memorials, the trustiest monument for the presentation of an event or a name or an affection; for it, and it only, is respected by wars and revolutions, and survives them". ~Mark Twain in "Letter to the Millicent Library"’

I like school because its fun. I play with my friends at recess. In class I like to read. When it’s lunch I sit with my friends. I hear birds chirp on trees. I learn math at school.

Our annual Fall capital campaign drive is here. From Monday, October 1st Friday, October 5th, the Laguna Road Support Our School Foundation will be collecting donations from Laguna Road families, staff, and friends. Our annual capital campaign is a major contributor to the foundation’s budget. We use the monies to provide our students with a physical education (P.E.) assistant, a technology lab staff person, to supplement office personnel hours, and provide ongoing supplies to the P.E. and technology programs at our school.

Be Inspired. You Can Make a Difference. Birthday parties and gifts are exciting events for children. Shrey S m i t G a n d h i ( Ro o m 11 / M r s . Nicholes) decided to celebrate his 7th birthday differently this year. Instead of receiving birthday gifts for himself, Shrey asked his family and friends for donations to raise money to give back to his homeland of India. Shrey chose to donate to an organization called Sewa Rural, a non-profit organization that is involved in health and development in poor, rural areas of India. Donations to Sewa Rural are used to help cover medical costs such as: 1) helping a woman to have a safe delivery, 2) giving sight to a person via a cataract operation, and 3) permanently sponsoring a bed in hospital which would cover cost of all patients who get admitted to this bed. Shrey has already collected $1000.00 dollars, and he is donating the money in person when he travels back to India in November. His goal is to collect a total of $5000.00. Just like Shrey, any one of us can make a difference by showing others it is better to give then to receive. Remember, you can achieve anything you set out to do.

Calling All Shoppers! Join PTA supporters on Saturday, October 27th, for a Shopping Extravaganza at the Cabazon Outlets. For each ticket sold at $20.00, a donation of $15.00 will be made back to our PTA. For more information contact PTA President, Helen Kharrat, at ha.kharrat@hotmail.com.
