Lowther's Garden Activity Pack

Page 1

Welcome to the Lowther Pavilion Theatre & Gardens! This is a place where you can explore nature in the setting of our beautiful Edwardian garden. The garden has been around since the year 1872, when it was opened by a man named John Talbot Clifton. He wanted everyone to have a beautiful place to enjoy nature, so he gifted this garden to the people and visitors of Lytham!

We have some fun activities planned for you at the Lowther Pavilion Theatre & Gardens. Miss Foxy, our resident Fox, will guide you through math puzzles, a flower hunt, a treasure trail, a word search and a colouring in sheet that shows some of the beautiful plants and creatures you might see in the garden. Take the pack home with you to learn how to make beautiful art prints using the power of the sun and how to make a cosy home for any wandering hedgehogs in your own garden.

We want to make Lowther Pavilion Theatre & Gardens an even more amazing place to be, so that it can continue to be a creative hub in the north west. So not only will you be having fun and learning in the garden, but you'll also be helping us make it even better for future generations to enjoy.

By exploring the Lowther Pavilion Gardens, you'll get to use your senses and imagination to learn and discover new things. So get ready to have some fun, and let's go on a garden adventure together!

Decipher Miss Foxy’s favourite spot to play by finding the treasure trail signs in the garden! Each sign has the missing letters, but only one of these will be the ‘winning letter’. If you find the right letter and combine it with the others, you can reorder them to find her favourite spot in the garden!

The Shrimper that stands in the middle of the pond celebrates the history of the practice of catching shrimps around lancashire, especially lytham and morecambe bay.

The wicker basket on his back is for gathering the shrimp from his net (the basket is called ‘leop’ locally).

Being a Shrimper was a popular job in the 19th Century. By 1950 there were still 20 full time shrimpers who worked in Lytham.

Nowadays fishing by hand isn’t as common so there are not many shrimpers left doing the job.

Connect the dots on our very own shrimper!

WHAT YOU NEED:

A thick cardboard box, Scissors, Newspapers, Dry Grass or Straw, Twigs and Dry Leaves

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Turn the cardboard box upside down.

Cut two side air vents and a little entrance into the cardboard box.

Make sure the height is above 10cm, so the hedgehog can fit!

2. Put some torn newspaper inside the box mixed in with clean, dry grass or straw on top.

3. Tuck the box near a hedge, with the entrance facing south if possible.

4. Cover the top and sides of the box with twigs, dry leaves and grass. This will keep it hidden and nicely insulated.

17

WHAT YOU NEED:

Large leaves, scissors, split pins, sticks, a ruler and pencil, glue.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Find a leaf. Bigger leaves make bigger pinwheels.

2. Cut the leaves into squares with equal sides - use a template or a ruler to measure before you cut.

3. Cut diagonally towards the middle of the leaf from each of the four corners.

4. Fold the corners into the middle, starting with the top left. Use a split pin to secure them all in place.

5. Using a hot glue gun (ask an adult for help!) secure the back of the pinwheel to the stick.

All plants contain chlorophyll, a green looking pigment that they use to make sugar by trapping light from the sun and mixing water and carbon dioxide together. Plants use this sugar to grow. You can extract the chlorophyll from a plant part and create a beautiful image when you make a chlorophyll print.

WHAT YOU NEED:

Paper towels, a spoon, papers of a few different kinds, tape, green leaves, bowl for discarded leaves,

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Find a selection of green leaves. These can even be ones you might have in a salad, like basil and spinach!

2. Place a leaf, top side facing down, on one half of the paper surface and refold the fabric or paper back over the leaf. Tape the folded paper or fabric to the table to hold it in place.

3. Using the bottom of the spoon and pressing very firmly, rub the spoon across the fabric or paper. Hold the fabric or paper down firmly with your other hand. Be sure to rub the spoon over the entire leaf area so that all the leaf’s chlorophyll will be pressed onto the paper.

Did you know? Some plants print different kinds of greens and browns. Why dont you experiment with a few types of prints? Cut and stick them into the boxes on the following page to keep a track of which ones you’ve done!
