It’s a great day to be a Leopard! I am writing this message from the UIL 5A State Track and Field Meet in Austin. The morning got off to an exciting start with Lovejoy HS runners earning second, third, and fourth place in the girls 3200. We are Lovejoy Proud of Amy Morefield (2), Sara Morefield (3), and Camryn Benson (4) for this significant accomplishment. It was a special moment to see Amy and Sara on the podium together Dr Zambiasi, Coach Ross, Kate Morefield (Amy and Sara’s mom), and I captured the picture below while we were having a good laugh about Kate’s lucky hat
and coat. Her hat and coat stood out a little more today than in the early spring when there were cooler temperatures. We have more Leopards racing tonight and I am excited to cheer them on at Mike Myers Stadium.
When you enter Mike Myers Stadium at the University of Texas, there is an incredible view of our state capital building. This seems fitting given that the legislative session is heavy on my mind today. There are bills being heard on Monday and Tuesday by our legislators that, if passed, would impact Lovejoy ISD. On Monday, SB 8 which includes vouchers will be heard in the House Public Education Committee The committee is only allowing invited testimony. If citizens would like to voice their opinion on SB 8, they can submit a public comment to become part of the public record on the bill. Additionally, calls can be made to the House Public Education Committee members as well as our House Representative, Candy Noble.
On Tuesday, SB 418 (Angela Paxton) is set for a hearing in the House Public Education Committee. SB 418 eliminates the ability of publicschool districts to charge tuition to out of district student transfers. This would result in an approximately -$1 million impact to Lovejoy ISD’s annual budget. The bill also mandates student transfers from other districts up to capacity and acceptance by lottery with priority categories. Lovejoy ISD is able to charge tuition under current state statute that states a district may charge a tuition fee to the extent that the district's actual expenditure per student in average daily attendance, as determined by its board of trustees, exceeds the sum the district benefits from state aid sources For the 2023-2024 school year,
Lovejoy ISD anticipates an expenditure of $11,861 per student to educate each resident student in average daily attendance (excludes Lovejoy Scholars).
The anticipated resident students in average daily attendance will generate $11,129 in revenue of which 91.5% is generated by Lovejoy ISD taxpayers and $846 is directly from state aid.

Lovejoy High School's National Honor Society completed their Group Service project this past week. Partnering with Children's Health, each of its almost 600 members made blankets or busy books for kids who are battling an illness. Over 600 items were collected to give to these worthy children. NHS members also completed their Individual Service Project and cumulatively served over 9000 hours to their community. The 2023-2024 NHS officers are holding examples of the blankets that were made this year. The trash bags in the back are all filled with blankets demonstrating the hard work from all the NHS members. From left to right are Mia Reaugh - Historian, Campbell Lester - Secretary, James Brunson - President. Not pictured is Emma Nelson - Vice President. Congratulations to all our NHS members and thank you for helping your community.
The algebra team at Willow Springs developed an introductory lesson to rocketry by allowing teams of students to engage in the engineering design process through the construction and launch of lightweight rockets. Students applied the principles of vertical motion to conduct an experiment to collect data. This allowed them to calculate their rocket's initial velocity and maximum height. Students were also exposed to introductory concepts they will explore in greater detail in Calculus and Physics. Teams learned about how skewed data results and environmental conditions can directly impact the outcomes achieved in the engineering design process. Rather than giving students scenarios and asking them to state an inference or use deductive reasoning on a hypothetical situation, we chose to grant them access to an engaging experiment with multiple variables and outcomes, analyze the conclusions they reached and create a multi-media presentation detailing, explaining and justifying the results of their rocket launch.
At the conclusion of the experiment, teams of students engaged in communicating mathematical ideas, reasoning, and their implications to develop presentations explaining the outcomes they achieved and what their data showed. Our students are poised to be the next generation that drives innovation and become pioneers in the next phase of space exploration.

Students participated in a Wild Walk lead by a zoo staff member where students learned about about animals of the savanna and the adaptations they have that help them meet their basic needs. The visit was a wonderful way to experience 2nd grade learning standards in a real world setting!
