2 LDA Journal • Summer 2022 Have you ever had your iden tity stolen? I have, and it’s not any fun. Now there are plenty of things about my identity I might like someone to take, like possibly my mort gage or the car insurance payments I make regularly for my two youngest sons. But nobody seems to want any of that, so I guess I’m stuck with them for now. Several years ago, someone did use my identity to open several credit card accounts in Texas. Over a two-day period, I suddenly had new accounts at Sam’s Club, Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s and a couple more. Apparently, “I” opened these accounts in store and then maxed out the cards buying TVs and any other electronic devices “I” could get my hands on. About 2 weeks later I started getting statements in the mail thanking me for opening an account and detailing all the purchases “I” had made. It was only then did I start to realize what had happened. I dutifully contacted the police and filled out reams of forms and spent hours on the phone canceling these accounts that I didn’t actually open. Perhaps the most disconcerting thing about the whole ordeal is the sense of being violated by some unknown person. Surveillance cameras at different stores had caught them on camera opening these accounts but that didn’t help. They had fake IDs with my information, includ ing my social security number, but their picture was on them. Unfortunately, as is the case with most instances of iden tity theft, the people were never caught. As it turned out, there were at least half a dozen dentists in the NWLDA that had the same experience as me. Several of them had 10-12 new accounts opened in their name and charges made of $40-50,000. Fortunately, none of us was held responsi ble for those charges. Which leads me to the recent cyber security event at the ADA. According to the ADA President Dr. Cesar Sabates, the ADA’s number-one priority has been investigating this incident and working around the clock to get our operations back up as quickly as possible after rigorous test ing and verification. Dr. Sabates goes on to say that safeguarding member informa tion and data is the ADA’s utmost priority, and he reiterated that at this point in the investigation, there is no evidence that data from our membership database has been accessed by unauthorized entities. At this point few details have been released but we know that the ADA’s phone and email systems were down. Fortunately, as LDA members, the information that is stored in the membership databases is contact infor mation, much of which is all public and easily accessible to anyone. If you have taken a C.E. course through the LDA and paid online with a credit card, that infor mation is used only that one time and is not stored in the system. So again, as LDA members, we should be adequately protected with this data breach. However, this does beg the ques tion, “Do you have protection from a data breach if your sensitive patient information is accessed by hackers through your own office?” Fortunately, it’s easy to find this coverage on both a personal and profes sional level. LDS endorsed companies like Brown & Brown Association Services Professionals (Stormy Blair, Stormy.Blair@ bbrown.com, (985) 674-3886) can help protect your practice with cyber liability insurance and iCoreExchange (iCore Connect.com/LDA or (888) 810-7706) is able to help protect your email and is also HIPAA-compliant.
In addition to the listed tips, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) provides a tool for small businesses that can create and save a custom cyber security plan for your company, choos ing from a menu of expert advice to address your specific business needs and concerns. It can be found at www.fcc.gov/ cyberplanner.Inacyber world, it seems inevitable that eventually we will all be subjected to theft of some of our personal information. I’m not sure if we can completely prevent it from happening but we can definitely try to minimize the damage by protecting ourselves beforehand.

On April 9, 2022, I began my presidency at the 141st House of Delegates. It felt amazing to have a sense of normal ity as we were able to gather in person at this year’s House of Delegates. I am looking forward to a great year on the LDA Board of Directors with my fellow colleagues as we work to better our profession and organized dentistry. On April 27, the LDA hosted a successful Dentists’ Day at the Legislature. There were amaz ing guest speakers, including Dr. Steve Nelson, Interim Chancellor of LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, who gave us an update on efforts toward the LSU School of Dentistry.TheLDA passed two bills this legislative session. SB 324 eliminates the requirement of human subjects for dental licensure exams and allows for a manikin exam. SB 349 provides clarity when filling a board position vacancy on the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry. Thank you to everyone who responded to the LDA’s callto-action alerts and sent requests to their legislators to support these bills. Read more about the LDA’s legislative successes on page 8. If you missed Dentists’ Day, I hope to see you next year. It is so import ant to connect with the legislators who help pass legislation in favor of dentistry. Until then, here is a recap of my address to those in attendance. On the morning of December 22, 1849, Fyodor Dostoevsky, author of the novel Crime & Punishment, stood in the snow, facing a firing squad, awaiting his death as a criminal of the state for voicing his opinion of political dissent. At the very last minute, there was a reprieve, and his death sentence was changed to four years of exile with hard labor in Siberia. Dostoevsky’s experiences as a condemned man changed his outlook on life. He began to live life with a different sense of purpose. He began to give back. Ladies and gentlemen, do not wait until you have the heart attack, that cancer scare, that automobile accident, or facing that firing squad to change your sense of purpose. Give back to those around you, as well as to serve our great profession of dentistry.Involvement by all of us in dentistry is critical. One woman or man alone cannot affect the positive change that is necessary. It would be difficult and very expensive for one or five or ten dentists to hire lobby ists and do what we do to affect that change. After all, there is not one of us who is more effective than all of Withus! that being said, congrat ulations to the LSUSD class of 2022! Lean on the LDA and your colleagues as you venture out into the world of dentistry. We are here for you. If you are unsure about your next step in dentistry, we have you covered. Check out the LDA’s classified ads and resume and job postings page on www.laden tal.org. Employment opportunities are submitted on a regular basis.

ne of the fundamental rights under the HIPAA Privacy Regulations (see 45 CFR 164.524) is the patient’s ability to view and copy their records (the corre sponding state law is discussed below). Since 2019, the Office of Civil Rights has promised to “vigor ously enforce” that right under the HIPAA Right of Access Initiative and has done so with numerous enforce ment actions and sanctions. The first dental practice subject to enforce ment was announced in December. Section 524 generally requires prompt access – inspect and obtain a copy - by the patient or the patient’s personal representative to the patient’s protected health informa tion. Only under specific, limited circumstances can the provider deny access. The provider must act on a request for access no later than 30 days after its receipt of the request and is limited to charging only a reasonable, cost-based fee for the copy of the PHI, which is probably less than allowed by state law. In March 2022, the OCR announced its first sanction of a dentist relating to this issue. Dr. Donald Brockley, D.D.M., a solo dental practitioner in Butler, Pennsylvania, failed to provide a patient with a copy of their medical record. After being issued a Notice of Proposed Determination, Dr. Donald Brockley, D.D.M requested a hear ing before an Administrative Law Judge. The litigation was resolved before the court made a determina tion by a settlement agreement in which Dr. Donald Brockley, D.D.M agreed to pay $30,000 and take corrective actions to comply with the HIPAA Privacy Rule’s right of access standard.Ofcourse, not all dentists are covered by the HIPAA privacy rules – only those that bill and collect electronically. If a dental practice is covered, it must have written poli cies and procedures, one of which addresses this issue. If HIPAA doesn’t apply to a dental practice (i.e., it doesn’t bill and collect electronically), it is still covered by R.S. 40:1165.1, which provides that “a patient or his legal representa tive … shall have a right to obtain a copy of the entirety of the records in the form in which they exist, except microfilm, upon furnishing a signed authorization.” This statute speci fies compliance timelines, copying charges in the absence of HIPAA, penalties, and more. While there’s no explicit requirement for a written policy, having one helps to ensure that the practice’s employees have clear guidelines that will typically prevent inadvertent violations.
Patient’s Right to Access Their Records

Both HIPAA and state law have many details and nuances, but a little proactive effort, combined with clar ification and advice when situations arise, should prevent most issues.

he 2022 regular session of the Louisiana Legislature adjourned sine die on Monday, June 6, approving a state operating budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 of over $40 billion. This session included an infusion of “billions” of federal dollars flow ing from The American Rescue Plan, federal infrastructure dollars, Covid-19 revenues, and excess funds recognized by the Revenue Estimating Committee for spend ing in the 2022-23 budget. The LDA closely monitored over 30 bills of interest to dentists and dentistry throughout session. Again, it is through the support of the LDA’s contact dentist network, along with the additional financial support from the ADA’s State Public Affairs grant, that the LDA was able to successfully support (or oppose as necessary) bills that would cause a great impact to the profession. Here are a few bills or funding requests of interest.
There’s good data that testing on a manikin has proven to produce accurate and fair results, and the rate of passage is nearly identical to testing on human subjects. Now that the emergency order is over, to continue testing on a manikin would require a legislative change.

LDA Bills: SB 324 Eliminating the Requirement of Human Subjects for Dental Licensure Exams, Allows for Manikin Exams by Senator Gary Carter - This bill would remove the requirement for the examination to include proce dures performed on human subjects. Since the pandemic, through an emergency order of the Governor’s office, the LA State Board of Dentistry (LSBD) has allowed test ing on a manikin vs. a human subject. However, it was only allow able because of COVID-19, and the emergency order has now expired.

Act. No. 312. Effective date, August 1, 2022. SB 349 to Provide Clarity When Filling a Vacancy on the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry by Senator Gary Carter - The Louisiana State Board of Dentistry (LSBD) board members can serve up to two, five-year terms. According to the Governor’s Office of Boards and Commissions, if an LSBD board member leaves their term mid-year, there is some confusion about the completion of the next person’s term. This bill is very simple and would allow the newly elected board member to finish that calendar year, then start their first five-year term if the previous LSBD board member chooses to leave midyear. This change would make the term limits more in uniformity with the Office of Boards and Commissions. If signed by the Governor, this bill would go into effect on August 1, 2022.
Other LDA Priorities: The LDA spearheaded efforts with the LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry for $520,000 to create an extension of the dental hygiene education program. In response to the short ages and need for access-to-care, LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry and LSU-Alexandria are planning an extension of the LSU program in dental hygiene at LSU-A. The program will be housed at LSU-Alexandria’s Allied Health Building in downtown and will be operated by LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry. With this program, LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry can educate an additional six hygien ists per year in the Central Louisiana location. LSU-Alexandria received a grant from a local health partner to prepare the facility to house the clinic (e.g. water access, compressed air, etc.). Startup equipment is needed, such as chairs, lights, sani tization equipment, and tools to complete the facility, as well as a faculty member to teach.

SB 112 by Sen. Robert Mills – Requires health insurers that utilize prior authorization to reduce burdensome delays in approving and in making payments for covered health care services. Every health insurance issuer authorized to do business in Louisiana shall imple ment and maintain a program that allows for the selective applica tion of reducing prior authorization requirements that are based on the stratification of health care provid ers’ performance and adherence to evidence-based medicine. The program shall promote quality, affordable health care, and reduce unnecessary administrative burdens for both the health insurance issuer and the health care provider. A health insurance issuer shall submit to the Louisiana Department of Insurance a filing by July 1, 2023.
Dr. Jeff Hooton, Dr. Bill Hadlock, Sen. R.L. “Bret” Allain II and Dr. Marty Garrett. Melinda Deslatte and Dr. Gizelle Richard. Dr. Kirk Soileau, Rep. Mike Huval and Dr. Lance Savoie during the visit of house and senate chambers.
Additionally, the LDA lobbying team, in conjunction with contact dentists, was successful in our request for $2 million for equipment replacement at LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry public clinics. Many of the dental chairs and associated features are inadequate for patient care as they are 20 years old and past their life expectancy. Unfortunately, our request of $90,000 for Donated Dental Services Program (Dental Lifeline Network) was not successful. Since the massive cuts to the state budget during the Jindal administration, many of the non-governmental organization (NGO) requests have not been success ful. It was at that time that DDS was cut from the LA Department of Health budget, and legislators are leery to add NGO requests back into the operat ing budget.
HB 55 by Rep. Rhonda Butler and Sen. Franklin Foil – Provides Medicaid coverage for dental care for certain adult residents of inter mediate care facilities. The LDA also worked to support funding for this bill, as well as to secure state general funds to imple ment Act 450 of the 2021 Regular Session, comprehensive dental care for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) through Louisiana’s Developmental Disabilities Waiver Programs.

HB 312 by Rep. Dustin Miller – The nurses association and their lobbying team filed this bill after a task force was developed as a result of a nurse that was injured and passed away working in a hospi tal environment. Even though the LDA understood the seriousness of the situation that caused the bill to be filed, the stipulations in the bill for ALL health care providers would have caused an extreme hardship to many small and rural dental prac tices. After many back and forth negotiations on this bill, all inter ested parties finally agreed that it would ONLY be applicable to any office of a health care provider at which five or more healthcare profes sionals (dentists) treat patients.

12 LDA Journal • Summer 2022 LDA While it is increasingly rare to find gold crowns in patients’ mouths, noble metal alloys such as platinum and palladium are often used in crowns and bridges. These white metals cannot be detected by the naked eye and are often the underlying metals associated with porcelain restorations. In addition to crowns and bridges, porcelain veneers may contain platinum foil, which is typi cally 99.9% platinum. Some dental restorations may be broadly classified as “white gold,” which often contains plati num. Alloys that contain both gold and platinum are the valuable types of “white gold” dental scrap, and depending on market conditions, those with gold and palladium will also bring high dollars when refined. Alloys of silver and platinum, or even silver and palladium, can also be used in dental restorations. In mid-May, palladium was worth $2,049 per Troy ounce, compared to gold at $1,869.90 and platinum at $948, based on the London precious metals market. Russia is the source of much of the world’s palladium. Russia’s war in Ukraine is impacting the palladium market, driving prices higher. It’s also worth noting that gold, silver and platinum jewelry can also be refined, as can sterling silver flat ware and serving pieces. All stones should be removed from the jewelry before submitting for refining. Silvercoated household products do not contain enough silver to make refin ing them practical. The Louisiana Dental Association endorses D-MMEX EasyRefine for precious metal refining. It pays LDA members 97% of the value of gold, 90% for platinum and silver and 80% for palladium. In addi tion, a 5% bonus is paid on the total value of the metal submission. Until July 31, EasyRefine will add another 2% bonus, for a total of 7%, on the dental scrap submitted for refining when accompanied by this coupon. To determine what the dental scrap is composed of, EasyRefine individually smelts each submission, liquifying the metals and burn ing off waste before pouring it into a bar mold. A core sample of the cooled bar is obtained and scientifi cally analyzed to determine the exact proportions of each metal in the bar. The scientific report is returned to the submitter, along with a check for the value of the submission. From the time the submission is sent to EasyRefine in a free, insured FedEx package to the issuance of payment is typically 10 business days.

Currently, the LDS endorsed 28 companies that benefit dentists’ offices and homes. If you do not shop with the LDS endorsed companies, you are prob ably overpaying for products and services you are required to buy as a dentist. For example, just by shopping with five of the companies that are essential to dentists, you can save more than $6,500 per year. These compa nies include Brown & Brown (insurance), ClaimX (electronic claims management), Office Depot (office supplies), Best Card (credit card processing) and Medical Waste Management (medi cal waste disposal services). However, the LDS endorses compa nies that can benefit not only your office, but also your home or personal life. A few more great companies include Lenovo (computers and technology), UPS (shipping), Compliancy Group (HIPAA-compliance management solu tion) and TDSC (dental supplies and small equipment). We even endorse Mercedes-Benz! Whatever you can think of for your office or home, the LDS may have it! If you are not already doing so, please consider signing up for one of the many high-quality endorsed products and services. Just take a second to see how much savings the LDS can provide. 14 LDA Journal • Summer 2022 After 31 years on the LDS Board of Directors, I am saying goodbye to my role as president of Louisiana Dental Services (LDS).
In 1990, Drs. Ross DeNicola, Rich Corely, and I attended an ADA presen tation on how to set up a for-profit organization. We were submerged with information on how a for-profit would provide a tremendous benefit to LDA member dentists. Without hesi tation, we immediately got to work and created the LDS. I became the vice president and then transitioned into the role as president in 2013. Since the start, the LDS has blossomed into the successful for-profit subsidiary of the LDA that it is today. Through LDS, the LDA endorses high-quality products and services that can be used for dentists’ offices and homes at special rates for LDA members only. A portion of the revenue is provided back to the LDA whenever a purchase is made. This is the primary reason why LDA members rarely experi ence an increase in annual dues, yet the quality of member services is continu ously being increased. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve in a leadership role within orga nized dentistry. I cannot wait to watch the LDS continue to grow as it endorses more companies to provide an even larger benefit to LDA members and the association itself. I am happy to announce that Dr. William Hadlock is eager to take over the duties and respon sibilities of LDS president.

• Create an online community • Communicate with patients more consistently • Build relationships with patients and potential patients How to Find Time We know that you are incredi bly busy. With so much already on your plate, it may be hard to imagine making time for social media.
Additional Tips and Tricks After all that, here are some tips and tricks to make social media management a little easier.
• Engage with followers: Take 5 minutes a day to reply to questions and like a few posts. This will show followers that you care and will help you keep patients!
Your practice needs social media for many reasons. People today expect your practice to have a profes sional online presence, and this includes social media channels. Social media can help with branding, customer service, identifying areas for improvement, and building good will. But most importantly, social media can help your practice:
The best way to find time for social media is to start small. For example, try taking a few quick photos during work to show what your day looks like. This can help you get started with social media without taking a lot of time from your day. As a best practice, we also recom mend posting 2-3 times a week. If you have time to post more, go for it! The more regularly you post, the more often you will be seen by patients. However, if you’re tight on time, post ing 2-3 times a week can be enough to keep patients engaged and to mini mize the load you take on.
Once you’ve selected your social platform, make sure that your brand is well represented on the page. Check that your profile includes accurate information, an updated logo, and high-quality photos of your staff and building. Then, ask your patients to follow and like your page. You can ask in person, over email, or even using a sign in your front office. After getting started, it is time to start thinking about a strategy.
To maximize the impact of your social media posting, you should have a social media strategy that aligns with your overall business goals. Start by determining your primary business goal, then think through how your posts can help you reach it. Next, you need to identify who your target audience is. It can be helpful to create personas for your audience to help you visualize them as you create content. Once you have addressed your goals and audience, you can start to create content.
The best place to start is by choosing the best platform for your practice. Generally, we recommend Facebook for most dental practices. In a single day, the average Facebook user visits the site eight times and spends 30 minutes on the platform.
How to Create Content
By Jayden Rae Bever Content Marketing Manager, ProSites Inc. (an LDA/LDS Endorsed Company)
Why You Need a Strategy
C ute animal videos certainly get a lot of attention on social media, but that is not all social media is good for. It can also be a powerful tool for your practice to communicate with patients outside of their scheduled appointments.Youmaynot have learned about social media in dental school, but because of the benefits it can have for your practice, it may be time you gave social media a try. Given that 78% of adults are active on social media platforms, this communica tion tool could be just what you need to take your practice to the next level. It can be challenging, but it is well worth the effort.

As we transition into the warm summer weather and the vacation season begins, the LSBD is continu ing to work between the valuable time off with family for the dental profession. During the LSBD May board meeting, the decision was made to not suspend the requirement for live C.E. hours for license renewal, as we have done due to COVID19 restrictions. Dentists renewing their license must complete 30 hours of clini cal C.E. prior to the next license renewal. Twenty of those hours must be personally attended. The remaining 10 hours may be online or personally attended. Hygienists must obtain 20 clini cal hours in their 2-year cycle, and 12 of those hours must be personally attended. Live, online C.E. hours will be considered as personally attended only if multi ple attendance checks are done, and a post-presentation test is completed. If you have any questions regarding C.E. require ments, contact the LSBD at (225) 219-7330. I would like to thank the LDA and their lobbyists for sponsoring two legislative bills related to the LSBD during the 2022 Legislative Session. SB 324 eliminates the requirement of human subjects for dental licensure exams and allows for a mani kin SBexam.349 provides clarity when filing a board position vacancy on the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry. LSBD board members can serve up to two, five-year terms. If an LSBD board member leaves their term mid-year, the newly elected board member can finish that calendar year, then start their first five-year term. The board has also approved a rule change to allow expanded hours of General Supervision for hygienists practicing in nursing homes. This addresses the needed access to care issue for nursing home resi dents in rural areas or those who have no transportation alternatives. As a side note to that, the dental school is currently doing a needs assessment to get credentialed to add six additional hygiene students as an extension of the LSUSD program. These students would be at LSUA in Alexandria. By Dr. Donald Bennett President, Louisiana State Board of Dentistry

The Story The DDS program helps people like Richard, 70, who lives in Shreveport and is a retired engineer. He enjoys reading and spending time with his grandchildren. Richard lives independently, and tries to get out, but has struggled to adjust since his wife passed away five years ago. Shortly after losing his wife, Richard was in a car accident which caused a C5-C7 spinal fracture, resulting in nerve damage and temporary paralysis. His movement has improved, but he is still quite limited in his right leg and hand. Richard’s dental health presented another challenge. Having not seen a dentist in 50 years, he had numerous cavities, and many of his teeth had fallen out. Richard now relies on Social Security and a small retirement benefit. He struggles to make ends meet, and it seemed that the dental treatment he needed was beyond his reach. Louisiana DDS 387 LA LA Thankfully, three generous Donated Dental Service (DDS) volunteers agreed to help. An oral surgeon extracted Richard’s remaining teeth, and a general dentist, with help from a volunteer lab, is in the process of donating full upper and lower dentures. Thanks to these volunteers’ generosity, Richard has received thousands of dollars in donated treatment that will restore his dental health. He shared his appreciation for this life-changing gift: “I just want to thank you for all the help you’ve given me. You have changed my life and I am so grateful for all you have done for me. I am 70 but you have helped me extend my life so much. Thank you so much. You have been a Godsend.”

24 LDA Journal • Summer 2022 LDHA Updates
Iam pleased to report that 2022 is off to a great start for the Louisiana Dental Hygienists’ Association (LDHA). The LDHA held its Annual Session in Baton Rouge on April 8 and the event was sold out! We hosted 250 hygienists under one roof. Thank you to the sponsors, guest speakers, LDHA members, and dental hygienists across the state for a successful event. Dr. Eddie Starr delivered a great refresher on medi cal emergencies. Emily Lehr, a local hygienist, provided updates on the new AAP guidelines. Dr. Jenny Herman elaborated on those guidelines and spoke on the different grafting techniques used by periodon tists. Lastly, our past president, Meghan Nettles, gave a riveting lecture on the importance of public health and the role hygienists can play outside of clinical hygiene. A huge thank you to Meghan, Donna Sarabia, Debbie Mitchell, and the Baton Rouge Dental Hygienist’s Association for making this event possible. With such a great spring turn out, the LDHA is happy to announce that its fall session will be held in Alexandria on October 28. We look forward to another great turnout for this upcoming CE event. During the Annual Session in April, we elected new officers. I am honored to have the oppor tunity to serve as the president for 2022-2023. Carmen Cross was elected vice president, Kelyn Griffin was elected president-elect, Tracy Jordan was elected secretary, and Cora Oufnac Lejeune was elected treasurer. Our committee for the state includes Meghan Nettles as the senior delegate, Joanna Peters as the junior delegate, and Gabrielle Broussard as the alternate delegate. The delegation committee will represent the LDHA at this year’s ADHA annual conference in Louisville, Kentucky, on June 24-26. With the help of our lobbyist Liz Mangham and the support of fellow hygienists, the LDHA is still working hard to expand the scope of practice for hygienists to include direct access. The Louisiana Oral Health Collation report card for 2021 (1) graded Louisiana as a D. This is unacceptable. As hygienists, we know by expanding the scope of practice –following 42 other states – we could do more screenings outside of the private practice setting. This would allow us to provide preventative care and help alleviate the barriers to that care in underserved areas of Louisiana. We know that working together with dentists is key to achieving the goal of a healthier, happier Louisiana. I look forward to serving as the LDHA president this year, and thank you all for your continued support.

28 LDA Journal • Summer 2022 Financial planning is not static. It is an evolving, multi-faceted process that includes making your financial goals and creating a vision of true wealth. That means defining what true wealth looks like for you, putting a plan in place to help you pursue your vision, then helping you maintain the true wealth you’ve achieved. The financial plan that is created is a living document that should be reevaluated peri odically. Financial planning goals shift as circumstances change, often following life events or on milestone birthdays. Anytime the conversation turns to goals, the issue of account ability needs to be addressed. People often acquire an “account ability partner” to help them keep a certain commitment, usually regarding physical fitness. What is interesting about acquiring an accountability partner is that even the professional who is holding some one accountable needs someone else to hold them accountable. It forms an accountability circle. “In the fitness industry, accountability is a pivotal part of success. Some clients need an accountability partner because they know they won’t or can’t do it on their own. Knowing someone is there every week, keeping you on track, and consistently checking in is why they seek the advice, care, support, knowl edge, and experience of a trainer. Accountability partners help clients become aware of behaviors to make habits that meet a higher standard. Accountability is so essential that even trainers need trainers.”1 This accountability circle can extend beyond physical fitness to financial fitness. It is imperative that your accountability partner is well-qualified to help you pursue any goal, especially those regarding your financial wellbeing. At every Olivier Group team meeting, our members discuss a chosen fundamental of The Olivier Group Way. The Olivier Group Way includes 19 fundamentals and practices that are the foundation of our unique culture. It explains how we relate to our clients, as well as to each other. Fundamental #3 is titled, “Set expectations for the client in the beginning and continue to remind them.” In other words, our team is expected to make sure the clients understand their goals and the steps to pursue their goals. Then, the team reminds them to keep their expecta tions on track. This fundamental is about Olivier Group being our clients’ financial accountability partner. When considering your goals, your financial planning team should go beyond managing your invest ments to help keep you financially fit.2 Your financial professional should remind you to take care of yourself and pay yourself first; get back on track when you wander off course; make adjustments that require knowledge, perspective, and focus; have difficult conver sations about topics most would rather put off; and avoid emotional decision-making.3“Accountability is essential to personal growth, as well as team growth.”4 Having a certified financial planner serve as your accountability partner can help you remain finan cially fit. There is a saying, “What gets measured, gets done…” Having an accountability partner in your circle helps you work towards your established and measurable goals. This will enable you to live your life by design and not by default.

It is anticipated that all students and residents will receive instruction on equipment utilization and applica tion through curricular activities. In addition to impacting over 33 courses in all three-degree programs (dentistry, dental hygiene, and dental laboratory technology), as well as our specialty programs, the printer will benefit labo ratory production. LSUSD has highly trained dental technicians and faculty members who can operate the 3D printer to increase their productive output, often with significant cost savings. Printed 3D models can be used for a wide range of applications. For exam ple, models are necessary for diagnostic evaluations, crown and bridge clinical cases, pre-implant or pre-surgical guides for the periodontal and oral maxillofacial surgery, and in orthodontics, with braces removed for treatment evaluations. With increasing budget challenges to higher education, the printer is a wise investment. Utilization of the 3D printer will position LSUSD at the fore front of dental education nationally and will allow us to maximize clinic income. In addition, 3D printing services can be offered to other universities, medical centers, and surgical facilities, as well as to providers of continuing education to healthcare practitioners. Very few J750 printers are available in the South; the closest is housed in Florida and Texas.
The Stratasys J750™ Digital Anatomy™ Printer (DAP) is the final piece of a multi-phase renovation of an entire floor in the clinic building, aiming to improve the curriculum, equipment, and teaching capabilities of the school. It is compatible with a range of materi als from Stratasys, which are specifically designed to make anatomical models for healthcare professionals. It enables clini cians to turn 3D scans into realistic 3D printed lifelike replicas for training and surgical planning. Utilizing PolyJet™ technology that works like an inkjet printer but in a 3D perspective, the digi tal anatomy materials are optimized to look and feel like bone and tissue.

The LDA hosts two out-of-state trips each year during the summer and winter. Mark your calendars to attend the next Summer Education Conference on June 14-17, 2023. The Winter C.E. is held during the Mardi Gras holiday and alter nates between Walt Disney World and a ski destination. The next Winter C.E. will be a ski trip on February 19-21, 2023, in Keystone, CO. We strive to provide great hotel accommoda tions and exceptional continuing education courses.
If you haven’t taken a trip with the LDA yet, now is the perfect time! These C.E. trips are tax-deductible and family friendly. That means pack up your family, friends and even staff and join us for these trips to locations like Keystone, CO, Pensacola, FL and Orlando, FL. Visit www.ladental.org/events for more information on these great trips.

Spear Phishing: A New Level of Scary
Protected Health Information should not travel in or out of your general email inbox (Gmail, Yahoo!, etc.). Those services exchange email across the public internet, which makes them more vulnerable to phishing attempts.
By Robert President/CEO,McDermottiCoreConnect (LDA/LDS Endorsed Company)
The goal is to get you to share things you shouldn’t, like passwords, credit cards or bank information. Be cautious when you receive an email from the bank, your IT department or a stating that you need to reset your password or go to a website to update information. There will likely be an urgent tone, indi cating you must act quickly or there will be a negative consequence. Reach out to the sender separately to verify it really came from them. Do Not Click the Link A quick way to see if the link is suspi cious is to just hover your cursor over it. The URL should point to the site where the email claims it will be going. If it doesn’t, or you have any doubts, alert your IT team that you think it might be a malicious email. Limit Cybercrime Access Points

34 LDA Journal • Summer 2022 It is important to be aware of one of the most successful ways cyber criminals target and attack: Your email. There are a couple of primary ways you can be targeted. You may be familiar with the term ‘phishing’. This is the general term for a broadstroke email approach. Typically, these emails arrive in your inbox looking somewhat generic and usually without personal information about you. These emails often contain poor grammar, misspelled words and other nuances that, upon a closer look, reveal a possi ble Spearthreat.phishing, on the other hand, takes email targeting to an entirely new level of scary. Hackers are hyper-target ing you by personalizing the content specifically to you, a group or an orga nization you might have a connection with. Cyber Attackers are now collect ing information from across the internet and social sites about indus tries, professional relationships and even personal details. This level of personalization and familiar tone blur the lines of what’s real and what’s a sophisticated fake. Sometimes you may be asked to click a link or attach ment or to respond to the email. If it’s spear phishing, you’ve opened the door for malware to get into your practice management system, accounting and other important applications.
The safest HIPAA-compliant email is transmitted across a private encrypted network in addition to each message being encrypted. If a cybercriminal can find you, they can try to scam you. One of the best steps you can take is to use a HIPAA-compliant email with a pre-verified network of providers and associates. If you need to communi cate with someone outside the verified network, you initiate the first email communication, and they have to verify their identity before accessing the message. There are five required HIPAA safe guards for email. Among them are ID authentications for message account ability and transmission security, aka encryption. There are big differences between an encryption-only email for general security and a truly HIPAAcompliant email fulfilling every HIPAA security requirement. No one is inherently immune from cyberattacks. Provide ongoing staff education to prevent these types of crim inals from getting in the door. Assess the security of your HIPAA-compliant email. And implement a plan to send the bulk of your emails through a truly secure HIPAA-compliant email. Recovering from an attack is much more diffi cult and costly than preventing it in the first place.
The U.S Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (OCR) recently released its Q1 2022 Cybersecurity Newsletter. The OCR explains, “If an attack is successful, the attacker often will encrypt a regulated entity’s ePHI to hold it for ransom, or exfiltrate the data for future purposes including identity theft or blackmail.”1 Let’s dive into what you need to know to protect your practice and patients. Thikkurissy, DDS, MS Giulia Castrigano, DMD, MS Friday Overview In recent years, the armamentarium available to Pediatric Dentists has changed to include robust prevention measures such as SDF, and the Hall Crown Technique. Despite these innovations, some children will still need pharmacologic behavior guidance in the form of procedural sedation. This course will go through the basics of risk assessment, preventive measures, restorative techniques and finally risk management for procedural sedation. Saturday Overview We are in the midst of an evolution in caries management. While sedation regulations, liability questions and options are changing, so too are the armamentarium in our non-pharmacologic tool bag. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF), the Hall Crown Technique, and ever improving bioactive restorative materials contribute to the changing landscape of caries management. This talk will frame how families, children, and caries management recommendations are changing and how to adapt our clinical practice to these changes. By David Austin Did you know that the LDA has invested in its own cruise ship? The cruise line is a new member benefit for LDA members to enjoy vacation time while obtaining clinical C.E. hours at affordable rates. The ship is the former Symphony of the Seas that was constructed in the mid-’80s. The LDA bought it at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it has been refur bished since then. I recently took a week-long cruise to Belize, Cozumel, Puerto Limo, Costa Rica, and then to New Orleans, where the ship docks. In true disclosure, this most recent sailing was my second attempt. Last November, I was a passenger on the LDA maiden voyage, and after one day at sea, we had to return due to a major plumbing issue. Unfortunately, the central sewage treatment plant flooded, and it caused discomfort among the passen gers on board. It was becoming difficult to smell the wonderful ocean breeze, so the ship returned to New Orleans to make the neces saryNow,repairs.Ican report on the second maiden voyage this past May and provide my unbiased opinion. The board ing process and finding our cabin couldn’t have been easier. There were at least two stewards per floor, and our steward helped us with everything. We had the plea sure of being upgraded to the balcony suite. It was super nice but a little claustrophobic. The ship sailed smoothly on the open water of the Gulf of Mexico. All was calm the first night until about 3 a.m. I heard several dogs barking and growling as if they were in our room. It turned out that they were in the room next door to us. The next morning, we found out that some clown, a guy that was literally dressed as a clown, had two large Dobermans that were part of his dog acrobatic act. They performed several shows on board in the large theater at the ship’s bow. I eventually met Mr. Clown and noticed that he looked greener than most clowns. He could hardly even stand up. He was suffering from severe nausea. It was from some tequila medication he was taking for his seasickness. He asked me if I would be so kind enough to walk his dogs. Without knowing what I was in for, I said yes. He gave me a ball to play the game of fetch, and we proceeded to the fantail on the stern, where he told me they like to play. The stern area of the Symphony is a large area that is completely fenced in and a great play area for kids and animals. The dogs took turns fetch ing the ball, and we were all having a great time. That is until I threw the ball one last time. It bounced twice and went right over the fence. To my horror, the dog next to retrieve the ball took a giant leap and went over the fence. The dog performed a swan dive into the ocean water. The other dog and I agreed it was more like a forward one and a half somersault with a twist in the pike position. We both scored him a 7 out of 10. Nobody seemed to notice except for the remaining dog and me. We both looked out at the water, and to our amazement, that crazy dog not only had the ball, but he was also swimming and gaining on us. It wasn’t long before that dog completely passed up our ship. Two days, the ship arrived at the port of Belize, and that silly dog was waiting for me on the shore, still hold ing the ball. Fortunately, Mr. Clown was so sick that he never noticed he was missing a dog. So, this leaves me with the disappointing report that if you want to sail to a destination in a really slow boat… the LDA Symphony is the one for you.
