Welcome TO ISSUE 15

OF LASH INC I am delighted to introduce Lash Inc USA/Canada and Lash Inc Australasia to the family. We will be producing these issues on a quarterly basis and the original version of Lash Inc will now be called Lash Inc International. Our regional editions will be under the supervision of editors Kelly Storer in Australasia and Jill Heijligers-Peloquin in USA/Canada. You can read more about these amazing ladies in the meet the editors article in this issue. In the past 3 months, the focus in the industry has increasingly been on lash contests. Competitions are an excellent way to gain feedback and improve your skills. If you win or are placed it is one of the best promotional tools for your business. Surveys of contest winners have shown that 80% of customers are influenced to buy products or services from a business with awards to their name. I hope you enjoy this issue, there will be a number of improved additions to the magazine over the coming issues, we have added a fantasy reader gallery and are looking for beautiful work to showcase for next issue. As always if you have anything to contribute get in touch with me at info@lashinc.eu or look out for editorial calls on the Lash Inc magazine Facebook group. All the best,

Anti-smooth by Olga Volkova

Just like clothes, eyelash extensions have their own trends. It is very important for every lash artist to keep up with all trends and offer the most up-to-date procedures to their customers. Eyelash fashion changes and the changes are usually dramatic.

I remember how popular Marilyn Monroe style false lashes of the same length used to be. Later “Foxy effect” styling with longer lashes in the outer corners became very popular. In 2011 natural eyelash treatments came forward, such as eyelash perming and semi-permanent mascara. However, with the appearance of ultra thin 0.07 lashes (the most in-demand thickness for over 5 years), volume lashes won fame. From light 2D3D to hyper volume eyelash extension. One of the main criteria in volume eyelash extension are smooth transitions between different lash sizes and curls. In other words, smooth upper line of lash extensions is one of the top priority criteria. For many years the world has been revolving around volume eyelash extension techniques and different techniques of forming volume fans. This has led to the fact that highquality volume eyelash extension has stopped being an exclusive offer. Now almost every self-respecting lash artist is learning volume techniques during the very first year of his or her practice. Today lash industry market offers

5 - Lashes

two very similar procedures – lash-by-lash and volume eyelash extension, which differ only in eyelash density and styling effect. The well-known trendsetting celebrity Kim Kardashian is famous for her glamorous eyelash look. Kim Kardashian’s eyelashes, part of her trademark style, are among the most covered and copied. Big, spiky, dramatic eyelashes that look like sun rays helped turn Kim Kardashian into a reality-show mogul. In 2016 the “Sun rays” effect has spread the world. Me and my team of trainers at the Lash Art University training center are always experimenting and searching for fresh solutions. Inspired by natural trends and Kim Kardashian’s “sun rays” eyelashes, we have set our minds on creating wearable and safe effects (in terms of their durability). During six months we have been trying out different daring combinations and carrying out researches on the effect durability and customer preferences. Now we have an innovative advanced training program, which includes 17 tried-and-tested effects! This is a true bestseller!

Vivienne brand owner. Founder of the Lash Art University. Chief Editor and founder of the Lashmaker magazine. Initiator and coorganizer of the LashBoomWorld

Among all the variants of creating antismooth line effect, we have distinguished two main principles. The first principle includes those techniques where thicker and shorter lashes are applied in the eyelash base area to make it look denser, while the upper part of eyelashes acquires a light smoky effect due to ultra light lashes. The second principle includes those techniques where ultra light lashes are applied in the eyelash base area to achieve a denser effect, while thicker lashes create the main length according to certain rules. Here are two ready-made solutions out of 17 effects, taught to our students during their training.

1) Thicker – shorter – denser

In this article I am going to share some of our latest developments.

Anti-smooth line – perfect solution for customers: •

with eye asymmetry;

fans of novelties;

admirers of the natural look;

with thick or medium thickness lashes.

Anti-smooth line effect varies from light “torn” effects to striking “sun beams”. The essence of this effect is naturalness and complete absence of smooth transitions. The principle of this effect is based on the combination of different lash lengths, thicknesses and curls with alternating intervals without making any changes to the rows of natural eyelashes. The full volume creates an effect of grown out eyelashes. Eyelashes look natural and thick without application of hyper volume techniques.

2) Thicker – thinner – denser

London to LA

Conference Travels Written by Kelly Storer

London – The first ever Lash conference on a super yacht! This was amazing! Organised by Louise Tierney of Lash Inc. Magazine, and Miranda Tarpey & Gabriella Gerardi of UK Lash institute; This event was luxurious, informative, and cosy! The vibe in the Auditorium was something I would love to experience again. It was open, friendly and there was an air of professional ease. I had the great pleasure of meeting the beautiful ladies and gents from Borboleta who are now my lash sisters and brothers along with some of the UK’s top artists and educators. It was a dynamic line up of speakers, each with knowledge and wisdom of lashing, business, innovative techniques and each with an aura of approachable friendliness. The whole room was in open conversation and you could feel the passion from each and every attendee.

Courtney Buhler had everyone reaching for their phones as she shared her secrets on building a great Instagram.

This conference was also a platform for the launch of the Lash Inc. Australasian edition!!! Very exciting news for Australia, New Zealand and surrounds. We are very busy down here in our lash world and now we have our own magazine to keep up with everything and showcase our amazing artists

Leah gave the congress a chance to be certified in health and safety with her very informative presentation on industry safety

A live demo from Captain Otto on the Elleebana lash lift system gave a great interactive experience where attendees could see first hand how quick the system is and check the results out for themselves

Stefani Alteri spoke about Adhesive and how to work with it properly which is a very talked about subject in the industry right now.

Leanne Harber spoke about her Bridging techniques and her charity work on cancer patients which left the whole room full of emotion and just sheer awe at the marvellous work she does. Miranda Tarpey gave us an insight into her new app the Volumetric Calculator which is available for purchase from apple and android. THE must have App for safe lashing.

11 - Lashes

Loreta told us a bit of her story and how others can build a successful team. Her cartoons in her presentations always show her fun personality.

Flirties team Michelle Ryan, Britta Krueger and Layla Hinchen gave us an insight into where we go wrong with social media pictures. Liz stole the show with her amazing body art! She literally painted a body throughout the conference I contributed with a presentation on ‘How to achieve full sets at a safe standard’. The weekend was such a great success, they released the date of next year’s conference and sold tickets before the event was over! One of my favourite lash conferences ever and was more than worth my 24 hour travel time from down under.

Miranda Tarpey, MEGA VOLUME Queen, discussed some tips for smoother mega sets and her Volumetric Calculator app. Leanne Harber showed us an insight into her amazing lash reconstruction, if you have not seen this, Google ‘Leanne Harber’ and find it! It is THE next big thing in lashes. Frankie Widdows and her Volume lash perfection presentation and video gave even the experienced artists in the room some food for thought. My presentation was on building a successful team and whether you are a home salon, commercial salon or business school, it takes team work to make the dream work!

Hollywood Then I travelled on to speak at the Hollywood Lash Conference in the Glorious Los Angeles! This conference was organised by Michelle Meredith-Rath and her team at Sinful Lashes. The Glitz and Glamour that you associate with Hollywood, was weaved into every inch of this 2 day conference. The cocktail party on the Friday night, the pool party on the Saturday and the 2 jam packed days of conference including full on buffet lunch had both attendees and speakers feeling like movie stars! Each speaker had featured in the Lash Masters Volume 3 book published by Louise Tierney, and was the perfect opportunity for a book signing session throughout the conference.

As I talked with attendees, it was amazing to see how many people were saying they felt inspired by the chapters in the book, how it had given some direction and some people motivation. It really is a great source of information and its lovely to see inside the minds of some of the lash world’s greatest. Michelle Meredith-Rath spoke about using speciality curls such as L and L+, which is great because a lot of people are too scare to use these. Jill Heijligers-Peloquin; this ladies mind fascinates me!!! We were lucky enough for her to share the fascinator test where we were all able to take part and find out things about ourselves and I can tell you the results are mind blowing!

The gorgeous Ruthie Belle was missed immensely by all her peers and the attendees and I am sure she would have wowed the audience with her Lash Botox presentation. Sadly Ruthie couldn’t join us due to health reasons and if there is one thing you should do in any size business it is look after yourself! Your health comes first over anything. I hope you all look after yourselves and each other. It is a very rapidly growing industry that we are part of and by coming together at events like these, getting to know your lash sisters and forming the bonds helps us all achieve a higher industry standard. We are in the profession of looking after people, servicing people, let’s do the same to ourselves. Lots of Lash Love guys,

Kelly X

Inesa Svetkina shared her celebrity styling with everyone, her presentation delved into the hard to perfect techniques. Loreta Jasilionyte is like Madonna, she only needs introducing by one name and shared with us her Volume styling

The nude lashes look is the latest trend, rapidly becoming popular among male clients, from businessmen to male models who seek to express their strong personality. With men’s grooming now a multi-billion pound worldwide industry, this is just another example of how you can expand your business and clientele. Many lash stylists assume that if they only specialise in lash extensions, it could restrict their business growth and potentially lose clients for them. Therefore they feel pressured to expand to other niches such as brows and nails. Loreta Jasilonyte, founder of Flawless Lashes, disagrees; “You can become the master of your field if you focus purely on one or two niches. Your expertise will then give a strong reputation in your business.”

Loreta advises, “Don’t limit yourself, there is so much to offer in the lash mastery. Classic volume, mega volume, nude; just to name a few different styles to suit different clients.” Loreta is a glowing example of how successful you can become when you find the right product, and a service you can dedicate yourself to. Model Tom, styled by lash artist Julija Baltulionene, trained by Loreta Jasilionyte, has used Flawless Nude Lashes, which are of the highest quality, eanabling all lash artists to create flawless masterpieces on both men and women. We also offer brown “nude” lashes to those who have blonde lashes.

Expert:

Responding to Online Reviews by Leah Lynch Online reviews are everywhere and gaining in popularity as the main source of decision-making when choosing a beauty professional. Did you know that more than 70% of consumers trust online reviews as much as recommendations from their peers? Don’t miss out on any opportunity to maximize your online persona, presence, and reputation! Sites like Yelp! And Facebook allow just about anyone to voice complaints about a business, but these sites are also avenues for your raving fans to get the word out about your assets. You may find yourself inclined only to respond to the negative reviews that have caught your attention, but responding to all reviews—positive or negative—will show your prospective clients that you are engaged in your business, that you care about your clients’ experiences, and that you have the professionalism and diplomacy to handle difficult situations. You may find yourself crushed one day by a terrible public review, sitting in front of your computer, steam blowing from your ears as you read a skewed, inaccurate representation of what has happened. You may think, “Oh my gosh; I’m doomed. This review is going to bring my business down!” Well, your best offence here is a good (sane and well thought-out) defence! Resist the urge to act emotionally or to become aggravated by the negative review, no matter how wacky it is. Keep your responses short and to the point, list the ways that you may have already tried to remedy the situation and/or offer a solution. Your potential clients are smart, and they, like

15 - Lashes

you, can spot an agitated and unreliable reviewer when they see one. It’s likely that they will read the review and then read your response, too; if your response shows that you know how to handle yourself in a tough situation and remain calm and professional, you can gain back your credibility. Of course, there are going to be times where you will receive a negative review that is deserved, and this is an entirely separate issue. Usually a comment such as this will suffice: “Thank you for bringing this issue to my attention. I am so sorry to have heard of this experience. I can assure you this is not the way we normally do business and I have spoken to my employee regarding this issue. I will be contacting you personally with a possible solution. Again, my sincere apologies.” It is important not to grovel or beg for their business back or to make discount offers as a review response. You may, of course, contact the reviewer privately if a discount or refund is in order. Always remember: When in doubt, leave it out… or wait it out! Sometimes, letting an email sit overnight before sending it will allow you really to take the time to be sure of your response and tone. Positive reviews are, of course, more fun both to read and to respond to. Make them light and add a personal touch if appropriate: “Thank you for your kind review, Jane. I’m so happy you loved your service! I used your recipe tip, as well. You’re the best! See you next month.” It’s always nice to let clients see you’re a real person, and to get a taste of your personality and flare. Don’t have a Yelp! page or business Facebook page? Now is the time! As a businessperson, you always want to remain grounded, to be present and engaged. I know, I know; you’re busy. Your life is crazy, but at least try to seem like the present moment is the most important moment of your day. You want to be the person who is willing to accept criticism and to find a solution for issues faced by your clients. By looking at your reviews and making deliberate, well-conceived responses to what people have to say, you will be perceived as a smart, proactive owner who cares about her business and who wants it to thrive and that’s the kind of business that clients return to again and again.

Good Brow

The Art of a

by Mandy Jeffery Australian Lash and Brow Artists

Brows are so HOT right now! And they go perfectly hand-in-hand with the Lash Services you currently offer your clients. 27 - Lashes

We have all seen pictures of amazing lashes but often the brows just take away from the finished result, right? How would you like to create not only perfect lashes, but also perfect brows for your clients and gain NEW clients to your business? Gaining brow clients not only helps your bottom line as brows are high profit services - even more so than lashes as they take much less time and

are much less strain on our bodies. If you are great at brows and offer more than a quick 5-minute wax job, you will create a loyal following of raving fans! Also, I would say 90% of women love brows and having them look great while there are a lot of women who don’t like lashes or can’t wear them due to allergies. By becoming an accomplished brow artist, you open your business up to so many new opportunities! Imagine you have 20 lash clients a week. With a little effort, you can upgrade 50% of them to start a brow journey with you. This will equate to about an extra 10 hours of work with very little financial outlay. You don’t need to win over these clients as they already love their lashes and will be so much happier being able to get their brows and lashes created in the same salon! Win/win for both of you. Most brow artists charge upwards of $50 for a brow design and this can include tinting and henna.

and a lot of people can’t actually see well enough to make their brows look like sisters – they end up with distant cousins drawn on! So make it easy for your clients to have the wow brows that they desire. I get asked a lot about training with Brow Henna and we do offer face to face training all over Australia and have a permanent trainer in Melbourne, Melanie Jane Foley. I have also created an online course www.alabamasterclass. com.au for students who live too far away to come to training or find the expense is just too much to train their whole team in person. If you are proficient in tinting you can try your hand at Brow Henna on your own but it does work quite differently to traditional tints so I do recommend you undertake some training so you can get the best out of your Brow Henna and then we can offer you on-going support to achieve brow success!

When it comes to shaping and design, a lot can go wrong with brows and sometimes those muchneeded hairs do not ever grow back, no matter what growth serums we use. Melanie and I have seen there is a huge gap in the industry for affordable and real-life training in design. We have joined forces to create a comprehensive brow design class with hands-on training by trainers who still actively perform treatments on clients so we can totally relate to any issues you have.

We will be launching this hands on class around Australia by the end of August 2017 and it will complement hands-on Brow Henna Training.

The design process for their first appointment will take a bit longer than normal as you need to consult with your client about their desired outcome and, of course, we need to manage these expectations and let them know what we can and cannot create for them. The majority of my clients have very over-plucked 90s brows (it was a cruel time in the brow world!) so to create a full brow for them with hair and tint is next to impossible. This is where Brow Henna is a saviour for these clients and they will love, love, love you!

Brow Henna I have been using Brow Henna daily with my clients for over 3 years now and I am still blown away by the results we can create! Brow Henna is a brow only tint but it differs from traditional brow tinting as it creates a skin stain as well as a hair stain to give the illusion of a full brow. Why is this beneficial to your clients? Many clients will have rounded brows, hooked brows or brows that are too far apart due to out-dated measuring systems from the 90s and early 2000s. We simply didn’t know any better. Times are changing and a full, even, smooth brow is what clients desire. Clients who cannot regrow their natural hair benefit from henna as we can create new brow lines for them and then teach them to draw these lines in as the henna fades. Giving our clients this guide on their skin makes it so much easier for them to follow at home. Stencils are fiddly and often end up in the bottom of the make-up bag

Fantasy

Focus on by Louise Tierney

I have always been a lover of Fantasy Lash Art but had no training in this specialised section of lash artistry. Although I no longer offer lash extension treatments, I would still love to have some projects when time permits. I think of myself as quite a creative person but would this translate into fantasy Lash Art? As a complete novice at this subject, I attended Miranda Tarpey’s class in Los Angeles. The class was full of familiar faces, some well-known lash artists that know the value of attending other classes even though they are experts. There is always something to learn. I loved everything about this class, I felt like a child again playing with lots of glitter, jewels, and embellishments. Miranda took the class through everything from the importance of the colour wheel when working with a concept, to choosing a theme, overall look plus technical aspects of applying lash art. The best thing about the course is that is was taught from the perspective of a Lash Art Judge, so Miranda discussed everything that would need to be done to get maximum points in most Lash Art contests. It hadn’t occurred to me that designs were assessed not only on the lashes but many points are awarded for the overall costume, body paint, make up, from head to toe. Months of

31 - Lashes

planning and preparation can go into a person’s design, costume and recording everything in a portfolio that is hand made for the contest. With my new-found love for the technicalities, you will be sure to see much more Fantasy Lash Work in Lash Inc in the future. Also, keep a look out for a special edition - Fantasy Lash Inc which Miranda will be working on for a very special event coming to London next year. Exciting times!

The course is perfect for those who want to compete in Lash art contests as well as those people who aspire to be judges. Courses are held worldwide http:// www.uklashinstitute.com/

Zoe Mizon

Lash Academy & Ladies Lounge Zoe Mizon We offer beauty treatments, lash treatments, and enhancements. I teach classic, volume and I am the Elleebana Lash Lift Trainer for South Yorkshire and also offer workshops and support for lash artists. I started in the lash industry 10 years ago, I initially trained in lashes when lash extensions were first launched here in the UK and can remember using 0.25 lashes in J curls on literally 90% of my clients. I can’t say I was a lash lover back then although I did do many sets and had a good client base. I never seemed to be that excited about lashing and preferred brows and other beauty treatments. It was when Volume lashes first came on the scene around 4 years ago that the lashing really took off for me, I found a lash tech local to me who was offering the treatment so I booked in to see what all the fuss was about; Oh my goodness that day changed my life! I needed to know who taught this treatment, how I could progress and I finally booked myself on a course. Although at first, I found volume lashing difficult and couldn’t fan for toffee, it became an absolute obsession! You would find me sitting with a sponge trying to fan every opportunity. I was online on every single lash forum asking questions stalking fabulous artists wanting to be just like them. I kept trying to improve and would critique every single set I did, and then one day I saw an advertisement for Lash Festival competition in 2014 so I thought what the heck, took 2 of my best photos of my work at the time and entered them just to see where I ranked. That year I didn’t place but it showed me what standards of work were out there and I knew I had a long way to improve. So my next mission was to take the 12 months and improve my sets. The following Year I re-entered wondering if I had improved enough to get into the top 20, to my astonishment I actually came joint 3rd in the competition with Vicky Rugg who was my total idol at the time, I could have cried (in fact

33 - Lashes

I think I did a few times), My local radio station got in touch and newspapers as they had seen it online and bang my name was kind of out there in the area! I was getting messages from lash artists asking if I did training or mentoring and I thought to myself, Zoe you need to seriously think about this. I love helping and supporting others and am a very patient caring person I just felt it was the right thing to do, so I took the plunge and went for my teaching qualifications and was given a fabulous opportunity to train for a big lash training company. I trained for them for 6 months but found the course to be a bit conflicting to what I believed was the best way of lashing so in my spare time I began writing my own manuals. Once completed I submitted them to insurers and had them accredited and that was the start of Zoe Mizon Lash Academy & Ladies Lounge. I now have a very large Luxurious high-end Training academy and Salon based in South Yorkshire UK and have a team of 10 highly skilled lash artists/beauticians working along side me and a diary that is filled up every day. I am now in the process of launching a big new exciting brand to the lash world and I couldn’t be happier, I feel like I am really living my dream.

What did you do before I started out from school in hairdressing which clearly wasn’t my forte, and to fund me through college I had a part time job in our local printers where my sister worked at the time, I decided to quit hair and I enrolled on a makeup and beauty course which I really loved. I obtained my qualifications and would work evenings and weekends mobile, when I bought my first house, I had a room where I would do the odd treatments but it came a bit of a bind as people don’t seem to respect working hours when you work from home so after a chat with one of my best friends who owned a salon we decided to renovate her stock room into another beauty room for me. I was there 8 years and loved working with her, we are still best friends now and she has been a great support for me opening my own salon/school.

Where are you located

Tell us about your business: We are a luxurious, high-end salon and training school which offers unlimited support to students. I have over 100 students to date. Eye Shapes &

Styling Tips With Miranda Tarpey

Wide Set Eyes Wide Set Eyes, have a wider distance from one eye to the other eye (a wider gap between the nose)  Use longer Lengths in the centre  C & D Curls in the centre 

Never use longer lashes on the outer corners

Never use outer flicks or a cat eye style

The Aim To shorten the distance between the eyes, so using longer lashes in the centre will give the illusion that the eyes are closer together. If we add length on the outer corners, we pull the eyes further apart and emphasis wide set eyes.

Closed Set Eyes Closed Set Eyes, have a shorter distance from one eye to the other eye (a narrower gap between the nose)  Longer Lengths on the outer corners  CAT EYE is great 

Never use longer in the centre

Never use dolly style

The Aim To widen the distance between the eyes, so using longer lashes towards the outer eyes will give the illusion that the eyes are further away from each other. This is a great eye shape to use the famous Cat Eye, longer at the ends style, much shorter towards the middle and inners. TIP: always change lengths, 1mm at a time for a smooth transition and change at least 7 times as a minimum for a cat eye effect.

Round Eyes The distance between the centre of Top lid And Lower lid is larger therefore, creating a rounded eye shape.  Longer Lengths on the outer corners  Shorter more relaxed curls in the centre 

Do not use Strong curls D L+ LC in the centre

Do not give a dolly effect style or any rounded lash style to this eye shape.

The Aim To avoid making the eyes look even more rounded, so by adding length to the outer corners we elongate and narrow the rounded eye.

35 - Lashes

Downturned Eyes The outer corners of the eyes falls lower than the inner corners, creating a droopy looking eye shape.  Add Lift and a lot of height in the centre  D Curls and L curls outer corners 

Avoid J B C curls on outer corner

Avoid Cat Eye Styles

The Aim We want to lift the outer corners, so we concentrate on adding length to the centre of the eye, and to avoid highlighting a droopy eye, we add short lengths on the outer corners. Use dramatic Curls like D or LC for the outer corners for that extra lift.

Hooded Eyes Have droopy skin hanging over the lid,  Any curls from the L family or D C CC work best this will disguise the overhang lid  Tape back lid when attaching lashes 

Avoid using very short lashes in the centre or where the overhang eyelid is.

Never use J or B Curls as they are too straight and will not cover the overhang

The Aim We need to disguise the hooded skin that hangs down towards the eye and so we cover with length and curl. As the overhang varies from person to person we must measure individually, whilst your client is sitting up with eyes open, mark the start and end of her overhang with an eyebrow pencil directly on the skin near the brow, this will be your guide when she lies down and you start lashing, this area will need your strong curls and length to cover the hood.

Asian Eyes Have no lid space, no crease on the lid , a monolid eye shape. The lashes are normally very straight and downturned  Any curls from the L family work best These have a better connection to the straight natural lashes  Longer lengths in the middle 

Avoid using dramatic curls like D and CC, retention will be poor.

The Aim Mono lid eyes are typically smaller in the centre so our aim is to open up narrow monolids, and make their eyes bigger. To disguise a monolid we would ideally use any of the L curls and don’t be afraid to use length in the middle and towards the inner eye, the only eye shape that you could start with a 9mm or 10mm length on the inners, (ensuring your clients natural lash length can support this). Keep longer length in the centre of the eye, shorter at the outers.

Interview with

Lana Slatina Let me introduce myself; My name is Lana Slatina, I have been living in Madrid since 1997, where some family circumstances brought me, and I stayed in this gorgeous, sunny city which became my home for the past 20 years. I graduated from Moscow State University for International Relations, I got a profession of international economist. I had exciting and enriching experiences working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia and later for some famous multinational companies.

We are proud to host 11 top-professional experts from 9 different countries of the world. Our event has been supported by 13 sponsors not only from Europe but also from Latin American countries, who gave a good response to the idea of the first lash and brow congress in Spanish language.

Since I moved to Madrid, I decided to give a radical change to my professional life and started my beauty career, taking course after course, in different academies and countries of Europe.

The Conference is going to be a very intensive day. We do not only plan speeches but also live demonstrations, questions-and-answers session, and at the end of the day we will announce the winners of our first international online competition, as well as each Conference participant will be given a personal Certificate.

I have been a practicing eye lash technician since 2012. I always try to increase my professional level, that is why I take the new advanced course at least one or two times a year. Two years ago, I started to host international eye lash stars here in Madrid with their courses. At the same time, I started to collaborate with the Russian Queen Lashes, and later was appointed an official representative and trainer of the Russian Queen Lashes Academy in Spain. Our Spanish branch is located in Madrid. People from all corners of Spain come to take our courses and always say that they really feel the big difference after our trainings. The eye lash extensions came to Spain around the year of 2010, and since then things have not change a lot in the sphere of a quality formation trainings. It is necessary to emphasize the eye lash education based on the philosophy of “not damaging” the natural client´s lashes. It is necessary to reinforce teaching the basics of the profession, such as the anatomy and hygiene of eye-lashes, and of course the correct application techniques. There are lots of eye lash extensions salons in Spain, that offer the volume service but they actually do not open the fans! Now the Russian volume is starting to be very popular here. But due to the lack of the correct professional education this service is on a very poor level in the country on general. That was one of the reasons why I decided to bring to Spain the practice of international eye lash extensions congresses. I have been planning it for about one year and a half, and I am very happy that our First-in-history International Lash and Brow Conference is coming true on the 10th of June, 2017 in Madrid.

39 - Lashes

The event will be closed with the announcement of the foundation of the Spanish Association of Eye Lash Extension Professionals. The objective of this association is to increase the professional education level of lash designers in Spain. We will introduce the common European sanitary and hygiene standards to this profession, as well as respect the common rules of the correct eyelash extension application. We have plans for a permanent professional follow-up for the members of the Association, organization of multiple professional events, and cooperation with other similar associations.

Lash Vision New Zealand 16 July 2017

Sometimes the most wonderful success stories come from the smallest fire ignited in a single person. I suppose you could say this was how Lash Vision started. In 2016 Kimberley O’Beirne had a Vision, one that would create a far bigger ripple in the industry than she had ever anticipated. With only passion

a sellout. 132 passionate lash technicians from Australia and New Zealand, who all shared the same desire for knowledge and networking, joined together in a magnificent show of camaraderie. The event did not disappoint, encouraging many in the industry to make mindful change. 2017 has seen Lash Vision expand into the international market to South Korea becoming an instant hit with 153 attendees! The message was clear - it was time to come out of the shadows, to break down the walks and build up our industry.

and a dream of a luxury conference accessible to all, Lash Vision was founded. Its ideals boasted industry unity, inspiration and education. Hosted in some of the most luxurious hotels, greeted with Champagne, surrounded by decadent high tea and unbelievable talent. Showcasing a belief that it is each lash artist’s responsibility to drive the industry forward by creating a movement of motivated technicians that promote educated growth and support within the eyelash extension industry. Much to Kimberley’s surprise the inaugural Lash Vision Australia hosted in Melbourne was

Most recently Lash Vision was hosted in New Zealand boasting 64 attendees, another huge achievement as the population of lash artists is significantly smaller. Kimberley knew that New Zealand - much the same as previous conferences, was more than just educational for these artists. It was a time to make a change, an impact and take away the boundaries that are often formed by ourselves in industry. New Zealand has a small but wonderful collective of talented eyelash technicians and the energetic passion that was in the room was as infectious as Melbourne and South Korea.

Over the course of the day attendees had the opportunity to learn from some of the top educators and technicians from Australia and New Zealand. Each speaker took attendees through a topic they felt passionate about for 30 to 40 minutes.

Kimberley O’Beirne, Australia Kimberley O’Beirne is one of Australia’s leading lash educators, event holders and Lash Master for Elleebana. She brought together Lash Vision New Zealand in complete style and dedication to the lash industry. Kimberley hosted the event with pure grace and had us all laughing throughout the day. Her presentation, focused on ‘Classic Lashes Under the Microscope’ included a break down on creating ‘Volume Classics’ and her research on lash mites was extremely eye opening. By the end there wasn’t a single attendee who didn’t want to go for a shower after and realised the importance of detecting Demodex. Her attention to detail made sure everyone in the room left feeling welcomed, uplifted and truly a part of the Lash Vision family.

Lisa is the owner of Lashworx, a supplier and training organisation for the NZ Lash industry, and a very hard working business woman. Lisa’s topic of choice was ‘Adhesive chemical composition and sensitivity’, breaking down the structure of the adhesive, how to work with it safely, reaction prevention and what steps to take in the case of the reaction. Lisa brought incredible insight on her topic.

The Vision is growing, the family is growing and as Lash Vision reminds us... United We Stand, Educated We Grow and Inspired We Conquer.

Q&A with

Hayley Sharpe Eyelash Extension Forum Australia

What is the Eyelash Extension What do people do in the group or What are your thoughts on the Forum Australia? use it for? Australian lash industry? Eyelash Extension Forum Australia is a group on Facebook where Eyelash stylists, clients, trainees, suppliers, and trainers can collaborate and assist each other in all aspects of our growing lash industry.

Why should people be members? From prospective lash trainees, to beauty salon owners aspiring to grow their businesses, to international lash trainers offering lash courses of all levels..all will benefit by joining the small community feel that our large online forum has to offer.

How many members are there? Eyelash Extensions Forum Australia was established over a decade ago, now with 6000 members sharing the passion of lashing! Rather than expanding member numbers via advertising, our forum creators have built rapport by encouraging word of mouth referrals from likeminded lashy friends around the globe, adding to the community feel generated by this forum.

We encourage friendly conversation, education, advice and tips to lash stylists and students alike. Our forum is currently in the process of a makeover, where we will encourage our current members to express what is most important to them and what content and structure will benefit them most, and what they would like to see less of.

How long have you been lashing? I (Hayley), have been involved in the lash industry coming up for 9 years. I began in 2009 and established and registered my own business Xtend Beauty in 2010. Collaborating with Hypnotic Lashes (based in Sydney) I became their Queensland Trainer shortly before the business was purchased by new owner Linda Williams. In 2010 I proudly completed Certificate IV in Frontline Management and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. These days my motivation, heart and soul is my beautiful family. My wonderful husband Ryan, and our two gorgeous girls, Indi 5 and Nevada 2.

What do you do in your lash How many admin do you have business? and how do you control the page? Run by administrators Hayley Sharpe (myself) based on the Gold Coast and Linda Williams from Newcastle Sydney, the forum is moderated daily, new members screened and posts monitored for authenticity.

Lashing isn’t only my career but my most beloved hobby and passion. For the next few years, playing the role of busy mum comes first! Owning my own beauty business and working from home allows me to fulfil my dream of spending these quality years with my children, where they need me most. I operate from my beautiful home salon, custom built as an extension to the front of our home, lashing 2 clients a day and running 1-2 courses per month (and lash mentoring these trainees on a weekly basis).

From my early years of ‘Classic Lashing’, where Russian Volume was an unprecedented technique, to now, where there isn’t a 0.30mm lash to be found (thank goodness!)..I am so proud and excited of our ever growing lash industry. Of all its become and how far it has yet to go. I believe that those of us that are experienced and willing to openly share our knowledge of lashes will benefit greatly as the reputation of eyelash extensions grows and excels with us.

Who would you say are industry leaders and why? Two fantastic examples of gracious lash leaders, in my opinion, would be Irina Levchuk from Russia and Frankie Widdows from the UK. These women are a credit to themselves for all they have bought to our industry by sharing their experiences, courses and techniques with students and lash techs all over the world.

What would you like to see change in the industry? Although the Lash Industry has greatly improved and evolved during my time with lashes.. I’m sure many would agree we have only touched the surface. With regulations coming to Australia for not only training but lashing itself, I believe this will set a benchmark and separate those who seek only the potential dollars to be earned with those who have an authentic passion for the art of lashing.

Lash Bash Gold Coast

5& 6 August 2017

AUTHOR: Margaret Attrill, Luscious Lashes by Margaret #hashtagqueen

As a lash artist there is nothing more exciting than networking with likeminded people and getting the chance to meet ladies (and a couple of gents!) that you normally only get to ‘meet’ online. I’m not sure if others are similar to me, but I connect a set of lashes to the face of the lash artist before I know who they are #lashlove

Artists and Mimmi Ebbersten, Lashia Australia did an exceptional job of putting together two days of nothing but lashes, lashes & more lashes #lashbashgoldcoast The first day was speakers imparting their knowledge they have learned from years of experience. The second day was optional depending on your ticket type and allocated to workshops. Sharing a house with a few of the key speakers from Perth I got a great insight on just how much time and effort goes into their speeches, it really takes a lot more than we would ever realise!

I also volunteered along with Kathryn Leeman from Natural Lash Beautique to help sign up subscribers for the Australasian edition of Lash Inc. It was such an honour to be a part of this and we are so fortunate to now have a magazine purely for Australasia. We have so many talented artists that should have their work recognised. Kudos to Kelly Storer for being made the I can’t express just how excited I was to be attending the first Gold Coast Editor #girlpower conference, Lash Bash held on 5 & 6 August 2017 at Bond University. The organisers Julia Mann, Lash Tribe, Mandy Jeffery, Australian Lash & Brow

hear that so many don’t know how to do this correctly. Pixie Ambler of Pixie Lash Artistry had some great tips on how to improve retention, something all lash artists struggle with daily. This is one of the most frequently asked questions on forums. #washbeforeyoulash Julia Mann from Lash Tribe spoke about photo perfection and editing secrets and had us all jotting down her favourite apps to get the perfect picture #mydailystruggle Looking after the customer’s needs is second to none and it’s quite astounding how many forget that our customers should always be looked after and their needs met. Lydia Kypros from Bronze Bombshell Beauty gave us insight on how to keep our clients happy. It was then Trina Dial Horne’s turn to speak and the room went silent as we all listened in awe as she let the attendees in on some great marketing ideas on how to build a successful Instagram (aka Maven_td) #welovemaven Otto Mitter from Ex-Import Niche Products, the lash lifting maestro explained just how Elleebana got to where it is today as a worldwide company.

Kathryn Leeman, Kelly Storer and Margaret Attrill

Kelly Storer from Enchanted SPA opened the conference speaking on Sisterhood and the importance of supporting each other in the lash industry. I feel that Perth (where I live) has set the standards high and we have a great community that we can rely on. I hope that seeds were sewn during Lash Bash for other states to follow this. Kei Kim from Beautier then touched on the production of the Beautier lashes and why her products are of such a high quality. Kei Kim is truly a dynamic woman and such an inspiration. Som Deaves filled us in on how her Lady Power Lash journey began and how her business is still growing even with a busy life with four children and a husband. Som’s husband played a critical part in this as he took maternity leave to care for their fourth child. Aleena Maney from Just Lashes told us about her journey and how to recruit and build a successful team, sharing some great tips on why and how we should look after our team members. Mimmi Ebbertsen from Lashia Australia delved deep into work environment and safe procedures on working with adhesive and there is still so much to learn. Jodie Burwood from Sublime imparted her knowledge on lash mites and just how important it is to wash lashes daily. I still can’t stop thinking of how lash mites don’t have an anus and have sex on our lash line #yuck #washyourlashesdailyladies How to remove lash extensions safely without damaging the natural lash was Mandy Jeffery of Australian Lash & Brow Artists topic. It’s still hard to

67 - Lash inc australasia

Completing Day One we then got to attend a cocktail party, a fantastic way to relax and talk more lashes. It’s great to spend two whole days dissecting the perfect fan, that elusive adhesive that works for all temps, tweezers and not have eyes rolling and the “you’re not talking lashes again?” Day Two was allocated to workshops for Sapphire and Diamond level ticket holders, with participants having three classes of choice from the following: • • • • • • •

Social Media Marketing, Sales and Staffing with Julia Mann and Lydia Kypros Speed Lashing, Isolation and Safety with Mimmi Ebbersten and Aleena Maney Henna Eyebrows with Mandy Jeffery and Jodie Burwood Advanced Styling and Lash Mapping with Kelly Storer Lash Lift Introduction with Otto Mitter Ideal Fan Making with Trina Dial Horne and Som Deaves Fantasy and Lash Art, Competitions and Nailing Kim K Styling with Pixie Ambler

My choices were: Kelly Storer from Enchanted SPA on Advanced Styling where I learnt quite a few new styling tricks - and I have taken quite a few classes! #neverstoplearning Otto Mitter for the Lash Lift class. I would definitely recommend taking a class with the Lash Lifting King #lashliftking Trina Dial Horne shared her wisdom with Perfecting Fans. Super excited to be taking her day class in Perth #lashcrush What a perfect way to spend two days and hopefully they will repeat this next year #fingerscrossed I can’t wait for the next lash conference #lashvisionmelbourne

From the Organisers in their own words: I absolutely love the Australian Lash industry. It’s truly something different to the rest of the world. I am stunned and so proud of what we managed to pull together. These events are so important for the industry, to work together and raise standards and awareness for safe Eyelash Extensions. I can’t wait for the next one! Mimmi Ebbersten, Lashia Australia Lash bash was an amazing event. Mimmi, Julia and I worked so easily together and everything came together perfectly. I hope our attendees enjoyed it as much as we did. Mandy Jeffery, Australian Lash & Brow Artists Lash Bash was incredible! The knowledge and willingness of the speakers to help others blew my mind! Leading

Our Industry AUTHOR: Alex Hankin, Battle Lashes, ANZEI Board Member

Australia and New Zealand hold very minimal government standard regulations for eyelash enhancements, health and safety and education. Starting out my business less than two years ago holding a Diploma in Beauty Therapy, I never thought really thought about the lack of standards. However in the last 12 months I have really seen the importance of networking and connecting across the country for the sake our Industry’s reputation. And, it’s amazing! In other countries the application of eyelash enhancements are governed by law; most requiring a specific qualification to legally operate. In Australia and New Zealand we don’t have any regulated requirements. The introduction of an accredited unit of competency SHBBMUP001 Apply Eyelash Extensions by the Australian Skills Quality Authority has been a great start, but it is currently optional not a mandatory qualification. By developing International connections, we’ve been able to start to grasp the importance of education and networking to create higher industry standards. In August 2016 the first Australian Lash Conference, Lash Gala, was held, shipping over international heavyweights and showcasing our own local talent. That opened our eyes in regards to products, techniques, ways to run our businesses and appropriate standards. Other conferences like Lash Vision and Lash Con have followed since, with industry influencers sharing their knowledge and providing important networking opportunities. These have all contributed to raising awareness and higher standards - but we need to do more.

What are standards?? Standards provide people and organisations with a basis for mutual understanding, and are used to help communication, measurement, commerce and manufacturing. Standards are everywhere and they play an important role. They enable us to comply with relevant laws and regulations; and form the basis for the introduction of new technologies and innovations; ensuring products, components and services supplied by different companies will be mutually compatible. Standardisation is a voluntary cooperation among industry, consumers, public authorities, researchers and other interested parties for the development of technical specifications.

We have amazing networks available with conferences and online forum groups. These are easily accessible venues to help connect everyone across the country. And now with the launch of Lash Inc. Australasia we can stay even more connected than ever.

Planning for the future Last year ANZEI (Australia & New Zealand Eyelash Industry) came together from like-minded women with a passion to provide support for others in the industry. It is important for everyone, including clients to understand the risks involved with product application and maintenance. Their aim is to connect, educate and inspire others within the eyelash industry to maintain a high standard of application and safety for technicians and their clients. ANZEI has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to drive a supportive network frame for technicians. In the coming year they will release: • • • •

‘Consumer Fact Sheets’ for technicians ‘What lashes should feel like’ for clients A ‘help’ button online for technicians to seek expert advice within a matter of hours Accredited trainer locations

and an ANZEI certified safety application course.. without giving away too much!

What can you do? Stay connected! WE are the ones leading OUR industry. Whatever our involvement with eyelash enhancements it is US setting the standards and we are the ones growing the Industry we work in. Be active in forums, head to conferences where you can, network with fellow lash artists. If you haven’t already, head to www.anzei.org and register your interest to get direct information from Anzei as it is released!

We need to support, inspire and educate each other, and together we will thrive!

So, my point? I have realised to create a safer environment for ourselves and our clients we need to connect. WE are leading this industry TOGETHER. As an ungoverned body with no mandatory requirements we need to set the standards of application high so we can grow.

The Importance of Reputable Suppliers I am honoured to have business relationships with Australia and New Zealand’s leading wholesalers and stockists to the beauty industries. The men and women who run them employ passionate and knowledgeable staff to offer exceptional service to salons who spend their days servicing the public. This circle of servicing and re-investing local money in local business is what boosts the Australian and New Zealand economy and in turn ensures more ladies will need lashes.

About

Zoe Mit ter

I live and breathe the beauty world - lashes, brows, salons, suppliers and training – you name it and it surrounds me. My social media news feeds are bombarded with brows and lashes, my bedside table reading is beauty industry broadcasts and product samples spill from my handbag - but I wouldn’t have it any other way. My career in the beauty industry started in early 2008. I came to Ex-Import Niche Products with a Diploma of Business, a Bookkeeping degree and importing experience from my previous role in the jewellery industry but only a very slight view on how large and involved this sensational industry was. Otto Mitter (Acting Director of Ex-Import Niche Products, lifelong lash enthusiast but the most important of all his roles – husband and father to our son) opened my eyes to this industry when he lovingly gazed into my eyes and said, “have you ever had a lash lift?” My love affair was born, both with Otto and Elleebana.

75 - Lash inc australasia

I found a role I could sink my teeth into, a business I was proud of and while it sounds cliché a job I love. I come from a line of hard workers, my father a bricklayer and my mother his brickies labourer, neither of whom are afraid of hard (but back breaking) work. I learnt from them what it meant to put your all into something and see the gains that comes from your efforts. Running a business during some of Australia’s hardest building downturns and paying off a house with some of Australia’s highest interest rates meant I grew up in my brothers hand me downs (EEKKK). I have some spectacular industry inspiration -my mother in-law,Suzette Barlin who boasts 4 decades of expertise and was co-contributor and author of Australia’s first competency based Beauty Industry Qualification and my Father in-law, Warren Barlin, who established one of Australia’s first beauty services insurance companies to protect salons and began importation of Belmacil Lash and Brow Tints into Australia and New Zealand. These two powerhouses together with my “dream big and never quit” husband helped stir a passion and drive in me to see a world that loves our products as much as we do and after my 9 years with Ex-Import, Belmacil and Elleebana the response is truly overwhelming.

These wholesalers source stock from Australian producers or importers of product ranges you know and love, who in turn offer assurance that products on the shelves are genuine, and imported or produced under the required standards. Importers must register for chemical importation licences and insurance permits to be allowed to import into Australia, ensuring safe standards are maintained. For example by importing Belmacil Lash and Brow tints from Switzerland Ex-Import is considered the manufacturer under Australian law. You don’t have to scroll far through a Facebook forum to find a story of a salon client who experienced a product reaction. The cold hard truth is that if an Australian salon owner imports (buys) a product from overseas they too could be classed as a manufacturer of the product. Without the correct chemical importation licenses or registration, the salon’s insurance would not cover this reaction. I’ve heard stories of salons purchasing products online believing they are genuine only to find they are not. My heart goes out to those who fall victim to product fraud but there are ways you can protect yourself. My advice? Purchase from reputable stores, Australian or New Zealand wholesalers or stockists or ensure you are covered if you choose to import from online stores. You can view a list of Australian stockists for all Ex-Import Niche Products on our website www. eximport.com.au

Natasha during live competition I decided I wanted to compete live, I thought maybe my online photo submissions just weren’t showing my work as well as I felt I’d done the sets in person and if someone could see them live and judge in person I might just have a chance. Even if I didn’t, competing live would give me more experience and understanding . So I chose to fly to the UK this year to take part in two Live lash championships happening in July 2017. Before I left I did Enchanted SPA’S Advanced LashStyling Workshop on 25th June. I couldn’t believe all the things I picked up that day that I didn’t know already!! It was crazy! So much to learn and I tried to take it all in and learn as much as possible!!

Losing, Winning & Learning

AUTHOR: Natasha Gallier I first got into the beauty industry in 2008 when I moved to Australia from the UK. I completed my Diploma of Beauty Therapy, Cert II Nail Technology & Cert II Make Up Services and ITEC level 2 & 3 at the Australian College of Beauty Therapy in Perth. I then started lashing at the end of 2012 in the salon I worked at with my old manager (and now lash tech) Amanda Lee. From there I was certified with Lash Out Lashes in June 2013 and just kept practicing from then on! After coming across Loreta Jasilionyte’s Instagram page (@flawless_lashes_ by_loreta) a few years ago I started to get really interested in volume lashes, copying the videos Loreta had posted and starting to practice making my own fans! In November 2015 I went to Jodie Burwood from Lash Sublime for an upskill course to perfect my skills in Volume and I have been doing volume lashes as well as classic lashes ever since.

I flew to Birmingham on 10th July to compete in my first live competition, ‘Strictly Come Lashes’ hosted by Eliza Tyminska Holmes, held in Worcester, UK, 12th & 13th July 2017. The event ran for two days all day and I entered every single category determined to place in something! Sitting at the awards night just praying they would say my name just once, I came away with 1st place in 2-3D Volume!! (It was the biggest category there and my placing was the highest scoring sheet out of the whole competition!) I am still shocked and just can’t believe it! I also received 3rd place in Mega Volume & 3rd place for Lash Lift! There were also two online categories and I came away with 1st place for the ‘Lash Art’ category & 3rd for the ‘Kim K Styling’! On cloud 9! I now have a mentoring session booked with Joanna Staniul, 1 on 1 full day private training with Loreta Jasilionyte, my lash idol :) and Darja Striletskaja before I compete in the UK’s biggest live lash competition ‘Lash Battle’, organised and hosted by Hanna Putjato. I feel like the live competition experience is a turning point for me and I am stronger than ever and more determined than ever to succeed! Moral of the story? Don’t give up! Keep on learning, keep on trying, pick yourself up and build from each experience. I really want to thank my biggest inspiration Kelly Storer for everything! She has been so supportive even before we met in person! She just always wants to see everyone moving forward and succeeding with their business and she will always help, guide and support anyone 100% 24/7! Amazing! Thank you Xx Editor’s Update: Natasha’s determination and commitment to learning paid off again at London Lash Battle 2017, bringing home 1st Place in Nude Look and 2nd Place in Classic categories. Congratulations Natasha!!

After completing my Mega Volume training in October 2016 with Bobbi April from Indulge Lashes, I entered the Lash Festival worldwide lash competition in December 2016 and took home 3rd place in the Mega Volume category from hundreds of entries! I was completely shocked!! Bitten by the competition bug, since then I have entered a total of 11 online competitions that had 26 categories, with no placing every time. Even though I really enjoyed the competition process and learned new things each time, it was so disheartening to not place - it’s human nature when you put yourself out there and to be honest it knocked me down each time (lots of tears!) But I never wanted to give up...

Hair and Beauty Expo

The third annual Brisbane Hair and Beauty Expo certainly grabbed the attention of the industry, with over 6,120 visitors streaming through the doors across the two days.

Staged on Sunday 30th & Monday 31st July 2017 at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, the event saw visitors travel from near and far, including regional Queensland, Darwin, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and New Zealand. With over 6,120 industry visitors attending this year’s Expo, up 20% on last year’s figures (and more than double the inaugural Expo in 2015),

Brisbane’s hair and beauty community is certainly alive and well. The Expo attracted a first-class list of leading industry experts and educators, including Lorna Evans, Dmitri Papas, Justin Pace, Dario Cotroneo, Jules Tognini, Jaye Edwards, Natalie Anne, Laura MacLeod and the American Crew All Star Team – all as part of its Extended Education Program, which saw 479 people (up 27% on last year) learn valuable techniques, skills and information across a variety of topics. This year’s Expo saw the launch of The Sunshine Pro Series Competitions which attracted 331 contestants across the ever popular Hair Competition (Managed by MIG Training), the Emendee Nail Competition (Managed by Tracey

Boyle), Makeup Competition (Managed by the National Academy of Beauty) and Australia’s first ever live Lash Competition proudly brought to you by LashJoy (Managed by Brisbane Lashes). The four competitions catered to all, offering a combined total of 30 categories with Student / Apprentice and Senior / Professional divisions. These competitions attracted enormous attention as peers went head-to-head for great prizes and most importantly, the prestigious titles. Once again BHBE featured the “Champagne Lounge” and “Be(you)tiful Bar” proving popular again with visitors as the perfect places to take some time out at the Expo. In particular the Be(you)tiful Bar gave visitors the opportunity to relax and be pampered with their choice of hair,

nail and makeup services for $10, all provided by the talented students from the Brisbane School of Hairdressing and Brisbane School of Beauty. The Be(you)tiful Bar provides the opportunity for BHS & BSB students to practice their skills in real-life application, while all profits are donated to Hair Aid Inc. Hair Aid Inc. is an Australian not for profit organisation, that sends teams of hairdressers to poverty stricken areas to work directly with the people in need, to teach hair cutting skills. www.hairaid.org.au Another huge drawcard for attendees was “The Barbershop” with leading barbers from King Louis IX, Esquire Male Grooming, Heroes and Villians Barbers, The Loft Barbershop, The Harbour Barber, Clippy T’s Barber Shop, Kings Domain Barber Shop and the crew from Jimmy Rod’s Barber Shop.

This year BHBE invited Danielle and Teresa from Jack Reed Barber Shop in support of their simple but innovative idea, to give 1000 free haircuts to the homeless in 2017. With over 89 companies on show over 145 sites, the Expo featured a range of quality industry brands and suppliers, with deals and offers galore. Just some of the many brands on show at the event included Professional Use, Milk_Shake, Silk Oil of Morocco, Salon Support, iCandy Scissors Australia, Scissor Empire, Comfortel Furniture, GirlBoy Hair Candy, Pulp Riot, Kaaral, Spring Spa Wear, Dessata, Excellent Edges, Beautique Designs plus many more.

“The response to the 2017 Brisbane Hair and Beauty Expo by attendees and exhibitors alike was extraordinary, and we are so excited about the potential of this event.

“As Queensland’s premier hair and beauty event, we have some exciting plans for 2018, and look forward to moving towards our goal of achieving 10,000 visitors by 2020,” stated Greenhalgh.

“We are grateful to all those who supported this year’s event – our sponsors, partners, exhibitors, educators and visitors. The event will only continue to get bigger and better, especially as the support of the industry strengthens, as they too realise that BHBE is the place to be.”

Expo Founder and Manager Jason Greenhalgh is extremely excited with this year’s Expo feedback and the event’s future potential.

The 2018 Brisbane Hair and Beauty Expo will be held on Sunday July 29th & Monday July 30th 2018.

Sunshine Pro Series

Live Lash Competition Australia held its inaugural Sunshine Pro Series Live Lash Competition at the Brisbane Hair & Beauty Expo 2017, and expo attendees got to witness history on July 30th. This monumental event was organised by the Brisbane Hair & Beauty Expo team in conjunction with Brisbane Lashes Salon & Training Academy. Months of planning went into the event. Registration opened on April 4th with a preliminary photo submission round. Entrants were required to submit three original, unedited photos of their lash work via email. With the deadline for the preliminary round approaching, we had a flood entrants applying not just from all around Australia but also New Zealand and Asia, providing the competition a well- rounded and high- calibre selection of finalists. Being the first competition of its kind in Australia, we wanted to create an event that allowed Lash Stylists of all skill levels to compete and experience the excitement and opportunity. The following divisions were devised with this is mind: Classic Lash Category - Student Division (Less than 1 year classic experience) Classic Lash Category - Open Division (More than 1 year classic experience) Volume Lash Category - Student Division (Less than 1 year volume experience) Volume Lash Category - Open Division (More than 1 year volume experience) Japanese Anime Fantasy Lash Category - Open Division (Lash Stylists of all experience levels)

Our illustrious Pro Series 2017 Judges included Joy Crossingham and Katya Espinoza (Brisbane Lashes/ Lash Dolls Gold Coast / LashJoy), Mariko Matsumoto and Jessica Chang (Mariko Lash and Marie Rush Lash, Tokyo, Taiwan and USA), Bianca Garcia (Marico Salon, San Diego) with Kimberley O’Beirne (Lash Vision Australia), and Renee Gurney (Lash and Brow Professional Australia). Our fabulous sponsors were LashJoy, Glamcor, Lash Vision Australia, Lash & Brow Professional, and The Lash Collection who’s generosity and involvement together contributed nearly $30,000 worth of products as prize giveaways for our lucky competition winners! We cannot thank our beautiful, dedicated sponsors enough! The energy was palpable on the big day, with over 30 finalists following hundreds of submissions worldwide. The Expo was packed withonlookers crowded around the finalist stage as the Lash Stylists disappeared into their professional zones- lashing their models and displaying remarkable grace and artistry under such pressure. The Classic Categorykicked off the day. This drew initial crowds and interest from onlookers unfamiliar with Lash Extension application and styling. By the time the Volume Categories rolled around, the Expo was in full swing with our finalists lashing up a storm in front of over 100 spectators. Our judges walked the stage floor, keeping a close and watchful eye on the process and skill demonstrated by the finalists, noting quality of work, consistency, and time management amongst other factors. The Lash Competition MC Jade, covered in glitter and wearing her own Brisbane Lashes, kept the crowds pumped. We take this opportunity to congratulate and acknowledge the hardworking and talented women who made it all the way to the finals after an intense selection process!

Business Smarts

Building a Clientele Tired of Being the Best Kept Secret? Here are the Top 3 Marketing Strategies to Take you from Overlooked to Overbooked! Having several different marketing channels in place keeps consistent, new business flowing through your Lash Business doors. This constant influx of prospective and new clients allows you to keep your doors open, stay profitable, charge your worth, and most importantly THRIVE! I don’t know about you, but I didn’t go into opening up my own lash business because I wanted to be miserable and stressed all the time, that’s why I left the 9-to-5 corporate world! I wanted to be able to have more freedom and control over my time and my income. My passion for lashin’ was the ticket to that opportunity! Here are my top 3 marketing strategies to take your lash services from overlooked to overbooked!

Strategy #1: Let’s Give ‘em Something to Talk About Word of mouth referrals should be your biggest source of generating new business. Whether you’re in a small town or a big city, the power of someone’s first hand experience (known as a testimonial) will create demand for your services and a willingness to pay whatever price necessary to get the same results. The Walking Talking Billboard Theory: Every new client you can work your lash magic on will expose your amazing lash skills to dozens of new, potential clients. If you do amazing lash work and that client is super happy with the experience and the end result, you have just created a walking, talking billboard for your services. They’re not just going to tell their family and inner circle of friends, but they’ll tell the chick at the bank with the jacked up strip lashes that are about ready to leap off her face that she NEEDS to get eyelash extensions. She will also share her secret with the

woman at the grocery store who just can’t help but stare and ask “are those real”? Your client gives them a wink and discreetly slips her your business card. The best part about word of mouth referrals is that they’re FREE! Now you can choose to reward current clients with a discount for referring new full sets and feel free to do so in a way that makes sense for your business (all the while knowing that they’d probably hand out your card without a discount anyway). Think of any discounts you offer to the referring client as your marketing cost to bring in one new client. Look at it this way, if a new client who comes to you regularly is worth about $1000-1500 over an entire year to your lash business, and you offer $10 off a single touch up for the current client who referred her, well I’d take that deal all day, everyday! To figure out a client’s annual worth to you, use the following formula: Full Set Price + (Cost of one Touch Up x # of Touch Ups a year)= Annual Value of 1 Client Let’s Work It Out: Full Set price - $100 Touch Up Price - $50 Client comes in every 3 weeks for a touch up (52 weeks in a year divided by 3)= 17.3 touch ups/year $100 + ($60 x 17.3) = $1,138 New Client’s Annual Worth Even Las Vegas can’t give you those odds!!! Lashpreneur Lightbulb: Don’t get too excited about rewarding your current client with their discount until the new client referral has come in

and paid you. There are plenty of people out there that are so confident that their 5 best friends are going to book a new full set next week, and then are “shocked” that none of them actually called to schedule and appointment. Offer them their referral reward after the new referral has come in for their service and paid. Might as well require that the referral discount is only valid on full priced services too. No need to double discount on the same referral (i.e. a discount for the current client and a discount for the new client).

Strategy #2: What Particular Kind of Lash Magic Do You Offer? I always say “Lash artists are like Starbucks, there’s one on every corner.” I live in a large city where the market is very saturated with lash artists. Building a loyal following in the land of Groupons and insanely discounted pricing was, at first, a HUGE mental obstacle to build a clientele. It took months for me to finally figure out what made me different than most, if not all, of the other lash artists in my surrounding area. Once I honed in on what made me unique and my business stand out, I stopped all paid marketing and my website, social media and clients did all the marketing for me. My services became very high in demand and I was booked solid with a full price paying, loyal clientele AND a waitlist. It also meant I wasn’t the lash artist for everyone and would turn down clients that I knew would not be a good fit for me, my availability, or my lash business which I was A-ok with. My marketing message was clear and helped to draw in my ideal type of client and stated clearly who I was and what I stood for. What was it you ask? It

Lash inc australasia - 84

was as simple as being a “natural lash safe eyelash extension specialist.” Meaning the Kim K types need not apply. I lived or died by keeping client’s natural lash health intact and thriving as it’s been a common misconception in the public eye that you have to sacrifice natural lash health in order to have lash extensions. So not true! Maybe there are a ton of other lash artists in my area who do lashes that won’t damage the natural lash, but NONE of them marketed themselves as such. I saw a gap in the marketplace and discovered a group of clients who wanted lashes but were afraid of permanently damaging their precious natural lashes. Most of my clientele now consists of those who have experienced lash damage from elsewhere and are willing to pay a higher price to get the quality and expertise I have to offer to have their gorgeous extensions without the harm to their natural lash.

Get yourself a website. Even if it’s a free one page website, it’s better than not having one at all. To be taken seriously as an actual business and not a hobby, you need a place to send both in person and online “stalkers” to learn more about you and the services you offer. You can choose to have someone who knows how to create a website to build one for you or you can use a free one. It makes no difference to me when you’re just starting out, you just need to have one!

Lashpreneur Lightbulb: Offering great customer service does not make you unique, so don’t market yourself as such. In fact, if you don’t offer great customer service, may I recommend not entertaining a career in a service based industry? What makes you unique compared to your competition is best discovered by asking your current clients why they love coming to you specifically.

Instagram Stats: 59% of 18-29 year old internet users use Instagram 33% of 30-49 year old interest users use Instagram 18% of 50-64 year old internet users use Instagram Source: https://www.statista.com/statistics/246199/ s h a re - o f- u s - i n t e r n e t- u s e r s -w h o - u s e instagram-by-age-group/

• Are you always on time? Not necessarily unique. • Are you the cheapest in town? Maybe that’s unique, but you probably don’t have the income to stay in business very long…you should keep reading. • Do your lashes last the longest? Now we’re getting somewhere. • Do you educate every client on proper aftercare and what to do to maximize their retention? Excellent! That’s something to market and could make you unique. • Were you the first to bring eyelash extensions to your city? Bingo! That’s a difference maker and will give your audience the impression that you’re THE go-to expert in your city/town.

Strategy #3: Give the “Stalkers” What They Want Unless these first two strategies have you booked solid, an online presence is ESSENTIAL in this day in age. Most clients want to research and “stalk” you for awhile before committing to buy. It usually takes getting in front of your ideal client seven times before they take an action or commit to booking an appointment. You significantly expedite that process when you have an online presence.

Social Media Presence. We’re in a visual industry and the impact of Instagram and Facebook on our beauty businesses and our ability to get in front of our ideal clientele for FREE is undeniable. I specifically recommend these two social media platforms since it covers most client age ranges. To give you an idea of the age ranges for these two platforms:

Facebook Stats: 82% of 18-29 year old interest users use Facebook 79% of 30-49 year old interest users use Facebook 64% of 50-64 year old internet users use Facebook Source: http://www.pewinternet.org/2015/08/19/ the-demographics-of-social-media-users/ LASHPRENEUR LIGHTBULB: I recommend Facebook and Instagram as your primary social media platforms for marketing your lash

business. Facebook now owns Instagram so they play very nicely together. You can post one photo on Instagram and share it with Facebook with one click of a button. Clients typically spend more time on one platform over another, so you’re able to reach both audiences in a single click! Efficiency at it’s best! You can also use Facebook’s Ads Manager to run ads for one or both platforms. Winning! These are just a few marketing strategies to help spread the word about your incredible lash skills and to get you in front of the right client who will love your work, become loyal to you and pay you full price to work your lash magic.
