Welcome Welcome to the first issue of 2018! 2017 was quite a year, the lash industry grew month on month with no sign of slowing down, great news for lash artists everywhere.

There were many world class conferences and contests, with some dedicated lash artists travelling across the globe to attend these events. This year you will see even more opportunities to be part of the greater lash community. Even if you live in a remote area you can still be involved in everything that is happening online. There has never been so much information available to learn from and a whole host of ways to network and be part of the community. In this issue we are introducing a calendar of conferences and competitions. This will let you know what is happening in Lash Land and do not miss the opportunity to network and learn from these types of events. LAI is the next largest event that you should consider looking at. It is held in Arizona (details in the Calendar section), received outstanding reviews last year and is an educational extravaganza with most of the Lash Inc editors in attendance. There will be opportunities to pitch your ideas for editorials or collaborations with Lash Inc and with all other attendees. I will personally be at the Hollywood Lash Conference with editors Jill Heijligers-Peloquin (Lash Inc USA/Canada), Kelly Storer (Lash Inc Australasia), Miranda Tarpey (Lash Inc United Kingdom) and Leanne Harber (Lash Inc Ireland). This is one of the few events that all the current editors will attend and we would love to network with you, please come and say hi.

How quickly does 12 weeks go? I hope you have spent that time having fun, growing your business and looking after yourselves!

We have some treats for you in this Valentine’s Day release issue! Firstly, I would like to tell you about our new section “Local Lash Heroes”. This was inspired by a Facebook post I saw from the amazing Briony Cole declaring that she is shaving her head for charity! So many wonderful people in this industry put others before themselves and we would love to sing their praises! If you know anyone in Australia or New Zealand and surrounds who has done something selfless to help others please let us know! Let’s celebrate all these great things people are doing in the Industry. We have the ins and outs of International superstars Miranda Tarpey and Loreta Jasilionyte coming to Australia and some great info on looking after your eyes.

There are some Makeup tips in Makeup Masters for anyone wanting to advance their Fantasy skills and lots of great photography tips in our Business Smarts section. We also put the spotlight on the men in our Industry, are they here for the love of lashes or the love Miranda Tarpey and I are running the 2nd Super-Yacht Lash of a woman who has dragged him into it lol! This long-awaited visit from the lash industry figurehead saw her classes launched and sold out within the record time of 24 hours. To say Australian lash artists were excited for Loreta’s tour was an understatement. Loreta specialises in creating flawless lash masterpieces that are not only healthy to the natural lash but impeccably crafted. Her teachings focus heavily on safe lashing practises, for the client and the technician. Loreta’s techniques and client lash styling skills are unlike any other with emphasis on seamless blending and mixing curls for an immaculate finish. Loreta’s background in nursing and midwifery gives her a caring and supportive nature which adds to her unparalleled expertise as a master trainer, boosting her students’ confidence as she carefully encourages them to strive for more perfection in their lash sets.

Loreta’s long standing business relationship with distributor Renee Gurney from Lash and Brow Professional partnered with Otto Mitter from Ex-Import Niche Products allowed Loreta to experience Australia’s beautiful landscape during her visit. The flight to Australia from London (where Loreta hails) was long and arduous but to receive the warm and accommodating welcome from Renee and Otto helped Loreta’s transition


to our weather and people to be unified and wonderful. The coordination of the classes that were hosted by Otto and Renee presented a wonderful and exciting classroom environment for Loreta’s students at the Oaks on Market Street in Melbourne’s spectacular CBD. Loreta first discussed with Otto a visit to Australia in 2016 when Otto attended Loreta’s event “Global Lash Summit” in London. Otto was a guest speaker at the event and the friendship between Loreta and Otto was forged over that weekend. Soon after, Loreta expressed to Otto that she wished to visit Australia as so many Australian Lash Artists were wishing to learn from her and Otto couldn’t be happier to offer her the opportunity to come to Australia for her students and also to offer her the opportunity to speak at an Australian Lash Conference. After a leisurely drive through Melbourne’s Macedon ranges for a private wine tour at the prestigious Curly Flat vineyard Loreta was ready to experience all that Australia had to offer. Her love of Coffin Bay Oysters and the graffitied streets of inner city Melbourne saw Loreta fall in love with the culture and the night life. The vibrant experience was heightened by her enthusiastic and somewhat star struck students when her two classes began. Loreta offered two classes to Australian lash artists, both aimed at the advanced lash artist that specialise in the speciality Russian Volume technique. This manipulation of multiple extensions of a minuscule diameter attaching to a natural lash to create a dramatic but safe finish is an art in itself. Loreta’s pick up techniques that are unique and unlike traditional methods partnered with her styling mastery saw her students all comment that their lash skills have jumped to the next level after her class. With the amount of exemplary feedback from the students who attended these well sought after positions in Loreta’s class there is no doubt Otto and Loreta plan for future Australian tours to help Australian lash artists improve their skills to flawless standards.

Lashes Melbourne

I’m Trina Carter and I own Lashes Melbourne in Glen Waverley, Victoria. I first learned about lash extensions back in 2009 when my spray tan technician told me she’d booked in to have her first set done. Naturally, I immediately booked in for my first set as well and even though they were upside down (not joking) - I was in love.

I learned volume application in 2014, hired another contractor and taught her my principles, and it’s all grown from there. I’m also proud to contribute to ANZEI as a founding board member, working towards bringing change to the industry standards.

That year, I had my fair share of lash disasters which had me googling away trying to learn about what to look for in a technician - which somehow led to me enrolling in a course! From the second I picked up my tweezers I was hooked on the world of Eyelash Extensions and it became my passion.

It still feels like yesterday I was in my bedroom salon taking what work I could get. I thought I’d be in the corporate world forever, feeling unfulfilled and I never imagined that the decision to do a From my little sister’s old bedroom at my parents’ place, I quickly built up course would bring me here. Being so young, the doctors put it down to stress, but I wasn’t ready to make a lifestyle change until I found out I was pregnant in 2013. I finally decided to look after myself and enjoy my pregnancy, so I quit everything except for whatever work I got through my lash business. Little did I know, within a month I would go from 20 hours of lashing a week to 50 hours. Not wanting to have my clients disappear again, I hired a contractor and converted my garage space to a studio so that my business didn’t move, and my clients had someone to see while I was on leave. As soon as I went on leave, I lost about half of my clients - but it kept momentum. I believe the foundation of a good employee starts with who they are as a person and how that fits with your salons values. I now hire staff based on that and not their skill level and never out of desperation.

Briony Cole is shaving her head to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation on 18 March 2018. Here’s why and how you can help! My friends and family will agree when I say I’ve had a fair few different hairstyles over the years. But going bald is not one I’ve tried yet, and I have to say, I’m a teensy bit nervous. The idea of shaving my head might be seen as bold or brave, and working in the beauty industry, not something you see therapists do very often. I’m hoping my clients understand! But every time I hear or see advertising for the World’s Greatest Shave I think to myself - I think I’d like to do that one year. Well, this is my year. I’ve been wanting to play a part in raising money for charity and decided this is something I could do to help make a difference, not only for the lives of those diagnosed but also their families. When I hear of people going through the ordeal of blood cancer, or any cancer really, particularly when they are children with their whole lives ahead of them, I feel a sense of helplessness and compassion. I decided that this year I wanted to do something about it. Shaving my head won’t cure blood cancer, but it will go some small way to raising further awareness of this terrible disease and raise funds for continued research and support for everyone involved. Hairstyles are a very personal thing - a way to demonstrate your individuality or identity. Losing hair during cancer treatment is often a very emotional experience and I’ve seen the loss of hair reflected in loss of self-worth. I hope that shaving my head is a sign of solidarity with those undergoing My mission is to help people and their families through treatments and treatment. I’m hoping to be one of the many people participating in the remind them that being bald is still beautiful. I am hosting a fundraising brunch at Bazaar Buffet restaurant at QT Hotel in Surfers Paradise on Sunday 18 March 2018 and hope to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. On the day I’ll be running raffles with some amazing prizes up for grabs. This is also the day I will have my head shaved. I’d love to use my position in the lash and brow industry to reach out to you all. If you’re located in or around South East Queensland I’d love to see you at QT Hotel to watch my head get shaved and participate in the fundraising activities on the day. Brunch at Bazaar buffet restaurant runs from 11:30am - 2:30pm and then I’m scheduled to shave on the lawn area by the hotel lobby after that. I really wanted to be a part of Kimberley’s passion and as soon as I met everyone at the 1st Lash Vision it was easy to see why. There are so many good people that have the same passion as she does, it’s so much more than just a job to a lot of people in the industry.

Everything that I can see in regards to moving forward as an industry is well under way in terms of education on the products you use as well as the people you're involved with, realising that you're in this together has been a major leap forward from where I perceived the industry to be only a few short years back.

What did you first think when you entered the lash industry? What advice can you give to other men in the industry? It’s such a tight knit industry I’m just glad I can help in whatever way I can whether its manning the front desk at Lash Vision Melbourne or laying on a table for hours on end so Kimberley can get her creative on.

When did you first find out about lash extensions and what did you think? Do you think you get treated differently because you are male? I found out about the lash industry just over 6 years ago when I met my now wife Kimberley, I don’t think I get treated differently. Do you have any advice for our readers? I can only talk from my circumstance and perspective and that is believe in yourself, if you believe in yourself anything is possible. Mistakes are the best thing for growing yourself and your skill in whatever trade you are in. Nobody starts a career perfect. If you don’t make mistakes, it’s hard to learn and progress. Also, whether you're a husband or wife just show your partner support, it’s easy to take for granted how much your opinions matter.

Derik Hayes, Locks Lash

What is your involvement in the Lash When did you first find out about lash industry? extensions and what did you think? I’m the co-owner of Locks Lash. We are Australia’s sweetheart when it comes to lash extension supplies and training. I deliver training in classic extensions, volume lashes and lash lifting.

What other work have you done? What’s your background? I come from a background of counselling, dealing with interpersonal relationships and goals oriented success seminars. That’s corporate speak for I really like people and love helping them out with their issues. Do you have another job? Does having a whole bunch of swag count?

What do you do day to day?

Ok, wait. You guys take tiny little eyelashes and glue them one by one onto real eyelashes? And people pay for this? It takes how long?!?

What made you enter the lash industry? Got dragged into it by my wife. We had a few salons around town, but then as Locks Lash grew she needed some help, so I got trained in lashes, and because of my extensive video game experience, turned out I was pretty good at lashes. I really like people, so it was a perfect fit really.

Is there anything you can see that can be improved? I think we as a group sometimes get too serious about our trade and profession. The whole idea is to make women hotter. It’s art! Treat it like art, and suddenly you can enjoy every client, not just the ones with “perfect lashes”. Stay updated with new techniques and tools, and have fun with it!

What advice can you give to other men in the industry? Just do you bro.

What is your involvement in the Lash When did you first find out about lash industry? extensions and what did you think? I am the purchasing and logistics manager for Lashiamegastore.com.au

What other work have you done? What’s your background? I am a Qualified Chef. So for about 20 years I have worked in a variety of roles all the way up to Executive Chef. In a really interesting way both running an online store and being an Executive Chef are very similar. As a Chef my job was to seek out the best products at the best possible prices and to deliver it to satisfied customers and that principal is the same with Lashiamegastore.

Do you have another job? No, being a husband and father of 2 and running a busy online store is more than enough for me.

What do you do day to day? Well I am actually really fortunate to be able to say that I’m a really involved dad. I do the usual things like make breakfast, lunch and dinner for the family, get the kids ready for school, school drop off and pick up and manage Lashiamegastore in between.

When my wife Mimmi said to me back in 2006 “I’m going to start an Eyelash Extensions Business with my Mother” I think I buckled over in laughter and said something like “that’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard, that’s never gonna work”, Wow was I wrong.

What made you enter the lash industry? The webshop was the brainchild of my mother in law Ebba, she was selling some glue and single lashes here and there from her makeshift office/ studio set up in a downstairs bedroom. As Ebba and Mimmi started getting more clients on a regular basis the word started to spread about how good Eyelash Extensions look and feel. Both Mimmi and Ebba were soon fully booked out and needed someone to help packing and sending orders so I reluctantly agreed to help. Soon after, Lashiamegastore was born and the timing was incredible as we had just had our second child and I was able to quit my job working very long hours as a chef and help my wife with the business and more importantly help out at home.

What did you first think when you entered the lash industry?

What advice can you give to other men in the industry? Always be kind to the women in your life.

Do you have any advice for our readers? If you want to get the most out of this industry I would advise lash artists to attend conferences like Lash Bash on the Gold Coast or Lash Vision in Melbourne. The knowledge you will gain from these events is mind blowing.

I wanted to get into advanced special FX make up for film, so I completed my studies and did a few gigs, but after a while I decided “Make up” wasn’t for me. I obtained my Diploma in Business, did the odd job here and there in hospitality until the creative urge took over again and I became a full-time musician! I then went on to work in event management, with a lot of varying roles.

Do you have another job? I have my hands pretty full running this amazing company of ours! Although I am currently doing further studies in Advanced Cosmetic Science and Personal Care Formulation!

What made you enter the lash industry? I can really thank my family for this one. Our company was very successful in Australia, but after I was appointed Managing Director 10 years ago I was able to grow the company ten-fold. My creative side has always drawn me towards lashes and brows. It’s that instant gratification, because you can sit back and see the work you have done and appreciate it straight away.

People are always trying to develop better products and education, and technology is allowing us to do many things that weren’t possible 10 years ago. Yes, there could be better training, more support or improvements in products or industry standards, but we are always evolving and improving in some way.

What advice can you give to other men in the industry? Don’t drink beer before you do lashes and groom your beard regularly! Haha in all seriousness there are some great opportunities for you, treat everyone you work with respectfully, keep trying to learn and evolve, but ultimately do what you enjoy doing.

Paul Leeman, Natural Lash Beautique

What is your involvement in the Lash industry?

I love to get out on the open road and ride my motorbike with my mates.

I work with my wife in our business, Natural Lash Beautique. Some of my roles include cash f low management, writing to suppliers and clients, tax preparation, collecting salon supplies as well as general cleaning duties.

When did you first find out about lash extensions and what did you think?

What other work have you done? What’s your background? I started in the Building trade as a Bricklayer and Sub-contractor. After 13 years it was time for a change, so I embarked on a sales career selling monitored alarm systems and roller shutters. After 2 1/2 years I decided to give retail sales a go and joined an electrical retail franchise. In time I made my way to a management position where I was able to learn more about the skills needed in running, managing and building a business.

Do you have another job? I operate a small Vending Machine Business we started not long after moving to Geraldton. Originally Kathryn was servicing vending machines by herself while I worked at the retail store. As her Lash business gained momentum it became hard for her to manage both, so I resigned and took over the vending machine operation.

What do you do day to day?

It was 2006 when Kathryn approached me about having training. I had heard of hair extensions before but never lash extensions. I remember asking, “who on earth would pay to get that done?” Lets just say I am a lot wiser now.

What made you enter the lash industry? Basically I followed Kathryn. I don’t have the patience to become a lash technician. I prefer to stick to sales and marketing which is my strength and play a supportive role to Kathryn, so she can concentrate on what she loves and does best.

What did you first think when you entered the lash industry? Kathryn introduced lash extensions to her Gel Nail business in Perth approximately 2 years before we moved to Geraldton. When she wanted to start a Lash Exclusive business I was extremely sceptical. My first thought was, “this is a working town. The majority of people here wear fluoro safety gear all year round. I don’t think you will get enough clientele to only offer lash extensions. You are going to have to include other beauty treatments as well.” Boy was I wrong.

Is there anything you can see that can be improved? I would like to see stricter standards and policing of salons, as well as within the training arena. I am not saying that trainers are not doing a good job, I just feel that students are being graduated when some of them could use more tuition or practice before working unsupervised on paying clients.

What advice can you give to other men in the industry? Know your strengths and those of your partner and staff. This is a ‘feel good’ industry so make sure your presence makes those around you feel good about themselves, whether they be clients or those you work with. Enjoy what you do.

Do you have any advice for our readers? To employees: Treat your job and your clients as if you work for yourself. Build good relationships with your clients, boss and fellow employees. To salon owners: Look at your business objectively. If you are not happy where your business is at, then admit that it is where it is now due to the actions you have taken thus far. You can change course and if you don’t know how, then get some help.

What advice can you give to other men in the industry? Get out while you still can lol. On a serious note I’ve not been in a situation yet where I have needed to. Many of the men I know are involved in this business due to their wives/girlfriends, so I would say to any man support her with everything you can as it may repay you better than you could ever imagine.

Do you have any advice for our readers? Train with the best, learn from the best and constantly educate yourselves in any way possible such as industry magazines, forums, Facebook groups, up skilling by taking additional courses, taking advantage of opportunities where companies are hosting internationals etc. In such a fast-paced industry don’t get left behind.

In November 2017, Australia was blessed with the arrival of another Lash Master, Miranda Tarpey, CEO and Founder of the UK Lash Institute. Miranda is one of the UK’s top master educators and mentors in the lash industry, with a career in the beauty sector spanning 20 years.

As creator of the Mega Volume technique Mirror Link now used worldwide, Miranda’s expertise is undisputed. Constantly searching for pioneering new and evolving lash skills and techniques, Miranda is author of many lash programs and books and is creator of the Volumetric Calculator app used around the world for volume and mega volume lashes. No wonder people got a bit excited at her training in Australia! Hannah Hassan from Rapunzel HQ hosted Miranda for Mega Volume training over two days in Melbourne, with Enchanted SPA hosting a Mega Volume AND Fantasy Workshop over three days in Perth.

Miranda Tarpey has been one of my biggest role models and inspirations. So as you can imagine I was both ecstatic and honoured when she accepted my invitation to come to Melbourne, Australia to teach her Mega Volume class. I not only had the pleasure of hosting, but I was also a student alongside five other amazingly talented Lash stylists from Melbourne. Training was a two-day exclusive tailor made class. One of the things that I loved about Miranda’s training is that she likes to keep her classes small. She went around to each student individually and spent as much time as we needed to ensure that we would become true masters.

Mega Volume and Fantasy Workshop – Enchanted SPA, Perth Reviews I have always had a passion for lashing and have been creating lashes for around 7 years now worldwide. I heard Miranda Tarpey was running a workshop in Australia. I immediately knew I wanted to be a part of this as although I keep up to date with current trends in the lash industry, including Russian, I know there is always something knew on the horizon and it’s always good to stretch yourself!

Hosting and training with Miranda was certainly the highlight of 2017 for me. As the quote says “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest” Thank you to Miranda and Gabriella for making the very long trip down under. Your expertise, dedication, knowledge, and commitment to the lash industry has shone through. It was a really jam packed two days and exceeded all expectations I had. It was a small intimate group, so the training was very friendly and comfortable, which played to my learning style. Having been in the industry for a while I wasn’t sure how much new information I would walk away with but was blown away with it all. The theory part was so in depth and expanded on information I had just known as correct but hadn’t necessarily known the why. Miranda’s training style is flawless, I was engaged and obsessed from start to finish. Day two was the practical and putting all we had learnt into action on our models. One of my favourite things about these couple of days is that Miranda had time for each and every one of us. We are all on our own journey and have our own strengths and weaknesses, so Miranda was able to give us all one to one time to push us and make us individually the best we can be. I walked away from the training with so much excitement to implement these new skills and knowledge into my business and cannot thank Miranda enough! We are extremely lucky here in Perth, Western Australia to have many dedicated lash professionals that are committed to delivering top quality training of international standard. Kelly Storer the Director of Enchanted SPA Joondalup must be one of the most passionate women I have met, for bringing talent beyond measure within our reach within the lash industry. She also promotes a very real sense of sisterhood which is so inspiring. So… I made the commitment and booked myself in for the most comprehensive training I have attended in my lash career of 5 years, which is also quite possibly the biggest outlay in my education of all things lashes so far and I know not one single thing about its presenter! Which is quite outrageous, I know right? Especially considering the wealth of experience and knowledge I am about to meet: 20 plus years in Beauty, Multi Award winning, Judge, Author, Journalist, Educator, International guest conference speaker, pioneer of skill and technique, app creator… and so the list goes on (Ok so maybe I’m not nearly as lash nerdy as I originally believed I might have been). Day 1 The theory of Mega volume. We were taken back to the basics of fanning in the various techniques. Of course, we all have our own favourite methods combined with our very sacred tweezer stash. We then get to the task of what works best in mega volume to create safe and responsible lashing; achieving volume without damaging our client’s natural lashes. Miranda’s Volume lash calculator app was a very useful tool during the day. We were talked through various techniques, the benefits of the mirror link, Adhesives in ideal use situations, lash layers and extension curls to suit mega volume. The importance of mapping all lash clients and why it is imperative to achieving the perfect top line. As we were an intimate group of 6 lash artists; Verlie, Emelee, Tracy, Abby, Tanika and myself we each received ample personal assistance to grasp the varied applications. The theme ‘Cats the musical’ was revealed at the end of the day, leaving us all dreaming of what would await us in the morning…

Day 2 All things that glitter equals fantasy lash art heaven! Walking in to every inner artists’ dream the following day, eyes and minds were boggling at the sight of the conference room, Glitter, feathers, sequins, diamantes, paint, stencils and the massive array of crafty things to play with and create were all at our finger tips. Using what she had provided Miranda walked us through various techniques to decorate our lashes for fantasy lash art, where you really are only limited by your own creativity. As we worked Miranda discussed the importance of theme, preparation, model, preparation and colour choices to achieve her award-winning lash competition formula.

The biggest piece of advice I took away from this day was “Take your time” when entering lash competitions; do not rush your entry! We do what we love, right? I know this is certainly true for many of the lash artists I have met so take your time and enjoy each aspect you are going to create. The judges can tell if you have just thrown your entry together for the sake of entering or if you really want to win, so give it your all!

Day 3 This is where all the hard work and headache comes together. The body paint virgins listened attentively to Miranda’s advice on how to achieve flawless colour when using different mediums to create a look. What a fabulous day! Everyone worked tirelessly to bring together all the elements of the course, creating our very own living masterpieces. The models; Bec, Indei, Chelsey, Montana, Zoe and Nicole were so patient and beautiful, and boy did it pay off, the girls looked fabulous for the photo shoot out in the alley which provided the p er fe c t backd rop for the realism of the fantasy and our characters. The attention to every little detail is what sets this 3-day learning journey above the

rest. Well-presented, thought out and even hilariously funny at times! I had a blast and came away with so much information and inspiration. An opportunity not to be missed by any Lash Artist in future Enchanted training workshops. Thanks must go to Kelly for her tireless work within the lash industry, providing the great amenities of the academy and also for her Uber Eats skills. Gabriella for her behind the scenes work and her awesome singing. All the volunteer models who braved being at the mercy of student lashers albeit experienced ones however it doesn’t feel like it when attempting to learn new skills. To all the attendees who were all fabulous to work besides, always keen to offer help to a lash sister in need and finally Miranda, you were a real inspiration and a genuinely lovely lady.

But Melanie feels privileged to know some amazing mentors. Firstly, Jazz Pampling. Wow her enthusiasm and passion ignited a spark within which continues to burn. Jazz invited Melanie along to a fundraiser in Sydney to unite with fellow Brow Artists Australia-wide. Raising awareness along with Amy-Jean for ‘The Alopecia Foundation’ has been amazing. BROWartistsUNITE was created from being inspired by these wonderful women. Melanie Jane decided it was time to unite and share with fellow brow sisters and brothers and increase much needed awareness and support within both the natural and cosmetic brow industries. Melanie has held two successful events both in Melbourne and Brisbane. Melbourne was a delightful intimate High Tea with special guests AmyJean, Jazz Pampling and Georgie Westley. This event consisted of 25 Australian Brow Artists. After the success of Melbourne, it was time for Melanie to travel interstate to Brisbane to the beautiful ‘Customs House’, consisting of another Glorious High Tea outside in the sun overlooking the water. The industry continued to ask for more events Australia-wide, but Melanie had a better idea. It was time to create ‘The ULTIMATE BROW CONFERENCE’ for Australia. Double Vision If you decide to wear your prescription contact lenses with non-customized Flip Up Loupes, your prescription contacts will instantly become an integral part of your Loupe setup and naturally, your Loupes will not work as expected without them. Wearing your regular prescription frames in combination with a Loupe is not only inadvisable, it also clearly looks borderline crazy and could lead to dropping them right onto your client’s face mid-service – losing you clients, and certainly not improving your work. If you decide to splash out on a set of custom Loupes, it is vital to have a recent eye test before ordering them as small changes in your vision quality are often imperceptible to the naked eye. Custom-made Loupes are highly engineered to operate under specific conditions. Your corrected eye-sight is fundamental to the manufacturing process and a successful outcome.

Quasimodo Correction One of the key benefits of using a good pair of Loupes is the immediate improvement in postural alignment. Modern Lashing techniques require enhanced precision and without visual augmentation, many Lash Technicians tend to work in a hunched, uncomfortable position to see the minute detail of their client’s lash line. Even with custom-made Loupes (especially the fixed-lens TTLs) there will still be situations where a delicate balance will need to be struck between neck and eye strain to achieve the best possible head tilt and vision angle. Whichever way you decide to finally go, experimenting with a few inexpensive Loupes from eBay and Amazon is never a bad idea. You never know your luck… you may even fall in love with a Loupe you don’t need to refinance your car for.

Finding Your Light It is important to understand, even after finding or designing your perfect Loupe, that environmental lighting levels will dictate your Loupe’s performance. As ambient lighting of the work space drops, our pupil’s aperture instinctively dilates to compensate for the reduced amount of physical light reaching our retina – effectively shrinking your Loupe’s calibrated focus range. If your light source is too bright or intense, while you will have access to the full Depth Field, the Rod cells in your Retina will begin to temporarily close as your pupil contracts to reduce the amount of light

by Colleen Irvine, Photographer, Upstage Photography Photography has always been a great interest to me. The first photo I ever took was on my parents’ Kodak Ektralite Camera. It was 1989 and I had just turned 14. My Mums’ brothers and sisters had all been reunited after being separated 20 years beforehand and it was the first time they had all been together since then. Mum passed me her little camera and asked me to capture the moment. I remember feeling honoured to be asked to capture something so poignant, and when the photos were developed and picked up a week later from the local chemist I was surprised that these pictures I took, these small of images of my Mum and her siblings, all smiling and hugging each other, made my Mum cry. It amazed me that a small thing like a photo could stir up so much emotion in someone and from that moment on I picked up the camera at every opportunity.

My role in the lash industry is mainly as a photographer. In 2016 I was the official photographer at the Enchanted Experience in Mindarie, Western Australia, where I spent two days hanging out with some of the most extraordinarily talented lash artists in the world. These ladies created the most gorgeous works of living art, extravagant masterpieces and characters that look like they came directly out of a fairy tale. It’s always a lot of fun for me to be able to capture characters like this, and they made my job so easy.

I’ve also taken photos for a number of lash artists, creating images for competitions or marketing. I help with photography advice, Photoshop tutorials and compositing images too. I primarily take dance photos, portraits, weddings, final vision in Photoshop. I’m always happy to help as I think it’s vital that newborns and family photos. 1.

Lighting is crucial. Not enough light and your images will be dark, grainy and muddy. Too much light and you will lose detail. Getting the light right can be difficult, so play around with available light. Open the blinds and curtains and let more sunlight in. Turn the overhead lights on. If you’re using lights when you’re lashing turn those on too. The right amount of light will ensure your images are crisp and clear.

2.

Keep your camera still. Blurry images can be a result of camera movement. If you’re holding your camera by hand and the light is a little dark your camera will automatically compensate by letting more light in by leaving the shutter open slightly longer. This means if you’re moving, even very slightly, the camera will catch the movement in your image and that is what makes it looked blurred. Tripods are great for keeping your camera still, but if you don’t have one you can always prop your camera up on a flat, solid surface. A good heavy book is great to lean your smartphone against to keep it still while you’re taking a photo. And if you struggle to keep your phone still while you press the shutter, plug your headset in. The volume button on your headset acts as a kind of remote shutter. You won’t have to touch your phone at all.

else touch! Fingerprints, smudges, dust, they all affect the final image. And if you’re using your smartphone to take photos, think of where your phone has been. I have three kids and they all love using my phone to catch Pokémon. Ever gotten your phone back off your kids and notice that the screen feels like it was written in braille? Imagine what they’ve smeared onto the lens! Wipe the lens with a clean cloth, even your t-shirt, but never use your finger, it will just make it worse. Cleaning your lens can dramatically change the look of your image. 8.

Negative space. This is the emptiness around your subject. Having a little bit of negative space in your image will draw the audience to what IS in the image. The space will make the subject in your photo stand out. And that’s ultimately what you want. You want your lashes to stand out. Move away from your subject, just a little and include a little negative space. What angle are you shooting from? Negative space could be from a cheekbone, a forehead, or the wall behind your subject. Remember the rule of thirds? Place your lashes along one of the third lines in your grid and use negative space in one corner square. Move the negative space around along your grid until you find the spot that takes your image to the next level.

3.

Composition. Getting your photos from ”ok” to “wow” takes a little practice, but makes it easier when you use The Rule of Thirds. Look through your viewfinder and imagine your image is cut up into thirds, both vertically and horizontally. Like a naughts and crosses grid. See where the lines meet up? Keeping your subjects on these lines creates images with a higher impact. Play around with your subject, lining it up along each of these lines until you find the spot that creates the most interest. Smartphones have settings for these so you don’t have to visualise the lines yourself. In the settings on your phone you will find these under Grid, or show grid in viewfinder. Turn them on and start playing with your subjects’ placement.

4.

Move your model. I’ve seen so many photos of lashes taken where the 9. model is lying down, making it harder to get a good angle. Has anyone dropped their camera or phone on a client or model? I hope not. But consider moving your model, get her to sit at a table, or in front of a nice background. Ask her to lean on a table for support if she moves around too much while you’re taking the photo. Move her into nicer light by a window if it’s available. Sometimes, just moving the model off the bed and into a different location can help. Don’t be shy to ask her to move.

5.

Shadows. This comes under lighting, but it deserves its own tip because getting the light right is very tricky. When you’re playing with the lighting it’s always nice to remember to watch where your shadows are lying. If you’re shining a light onto your model from above the eyes you can create shadows under the eyes that will make it look like your model has had a rough night. Taking notice of where the light hits your subject is super important. Is your light creating shadows across the lashes making it harder to see the lashes? Move the light around and watch where the shadows fall.

Photoshop Express. It’s an app I use all the time on my phone. Learn how to adjust the levels in the app by playing with the exposure of your selected image, brighten the whites, play with the contrast, and soften the highlights. Editing your images, even slightly can play a huge part on how your photos are perceived. Be careful though. If you see too much white with no detail, you’ve overexposed. If you see too much black you may have used too much contrast. Just play around with it until you have the desired effect. If you’re a beginner just stick to the main three, brightness, contrast and saturation to start with. Keep checking the original file to see how different it looks and save your work in your camera gallery when it’s ready. The whole idea of this app is to just correct the levels in your image, but you don’t want to make it look unrealistic, so go easy on the filters. Save those for images of your coffee on the weekend. Oh, and always check the rules in the competitions. Does the competition say No Photoshop allowed? It’s not hard to work out which photos have been photo shopped.

by Courtney Hollins, Centre of Attention Makeup Artistry Scrolling through Instagram recently I have noticed this awesome, cool trend called “Blank Canvas”. The makeup look was first created by a makeup artist called Jodie Hulme from Manchester UK. The makeup look is quite simple but striking. The top half of her face is beauty inspired with amazing brows and eye makeup while the bottom half is opaque white with her skin tone foundation dripping down onto the “white canvas” that is the bottom of her face. Since Jodie created this makeup I have seen so many re-creations! I was so inspired by this look that I created my own 2 versions. I did a half skull half beauty with foundation drips separating the 2 looks and a rainbow inspired Thermal Screening look. I found some other amazing variations of Blank Canvas created by other makeup artists on Instagram and I just had to ask them to share their looks here! I really like how each artist took inspiration from the original piece and put their spin on it to make it unique. There is so much creativity and brilliance through the Instagram makeup community and it is really encouraging and refreshing. Apply primer, foundation and conceal under the eyes. Set with a translucent powder.

Draw a wavy line across your face, just above the nose with a brow/ eye pencil.

Fill brows, conceal eye area and paint a thin line above the crease with a gel liner.

Smoke out that gel liner towards the brow with a small f luffy brush. Apply a white eyeshadow base/cream under that line and all over the lid. Set the white cream with eyeshadows in the colors of the rainbow. Begin with yellow to the inner corner, orange, red, purple, blue, green and finish with yellow.

How to use

Cancellation Policies

to protect your business by Genevieve Hickin (Harding) Whether you are self-employed, a salon owner or an employed therapist that works on a commission basis we all need to protect our income. Time after time we see clients cancelling last minute or failing to attend appointments leaving us down on our daily takings. So how can we prevent this? How can we enforce a policy? And how can we make sure the client pays for their missed appointments? Having worked in various areas within the beauty industry over the past 9 years I have seen many a cancellation policy and I have seen some work, and some fail miserably. Here are some top tips to help you when implementing and enforcing a cancellation policy. The first things to remember when creating a policy are, to make it clear, visible and fair.

Making it fair If you are going to implement a cancellation policy, it is imperative that you treat everyone equally. This means that even if your longest standing, most loyal and regular clients break the cancellation policy then they still get the charge. You cannot have one rule for one and one for another. If you are unable to, or are not confident enough to enforce the policy onto every client then the best thing is not to have one in place.

I started lashing as a hobby, two and a half years ago, and here I am today; one of the most passionate lash lovers and the first multi award-winning lash artist of Luxembourg. In this article, I will share the secret of my success with you. Therefore, I would like to talk about the importance of education. Education in the lash industry, and eventually in every aspect of your life. Do you learn because you have to or because you want to? This question will determine the quality of your work in the future. In my opinion, the best ones in every field will be the ones who are passionate and are constantly willing to learn. Why do I say constantly? Well, as our industry is growing and improving all the time, it is essential to be always up-todate. But unfortunately, sometimes we tend to focus only on the ’new trends’ and forget about the basics. After reading Louise’s great book about the human eye, I started thinking about this topic, the importance of education (and being informed not only about the new techniques but also about the basics). Learning is a decision, but you need motivation. Your success and ’performance’ will depend on the level of your motivation.

STEP 1: ACTION In the last issue of Lash Inc, we spoke about the benefits of winning awards and the meaning of the ACT SURE system. The first part of the award entry system is ‘A’ for Action. As we’ve already reminded you, just like any other competition you need to be in it to win it. The more awards you enter, the better the chances you have of winning. Therefore, carry out extensive research and enter all the relevant awards you can manage to have a better chance of winning. This is applicable for both business awards and for lash artist competitions.

Years ago when I started entering awards I chose to focus on the general awards for business rather than my sector. The reason behind this was it was difficult to stand out in my industry at the time but when my company was up against a variety of different sectors it was easier to stand out as not every sector performs as well. Most awards companies generally run like any other business and like other businesses, they are for profit. Even though some are not for making profit they will likely run at break even so they need to generate some income to cover costs.

Be aware that in the general award category some are not quite what they seem. For example, everyone entering might win an award hence the ‘award’ itself is worthless and this in turn is worthless to you and your clients. These organisations make their money from the high entry fee or by selling you inflated-price trophies. If an awards agency doesn’t display their entry criteria or criteria for judging on their website, ask them for it. If they don’t provide it don’t waste your time entering. If they don’t send you a timely response or you have doubts move on to the next company. Your Pricing

Eyelash extensions is an intricate and highly skilled service to offer clients. Lash artists go through rigorous training and months of practice while constantly striving to apply extensions perfectly in a timely fashion. Charging the right price for your talent and services can be tricky. You don’t want to undervalue your services but you also do not want to price yourself out of the market. So how do you set the right price for your highly skilled hands? Also, how do you raise your pricing while keeping your clients coming back for infills? Education and communication are the answer. Knowing what your skills and talent is worth means little to an uneducated client. They don’t understand how much training, practice and skill building you went through to give them the lashes they’ve always dreamed of. So tell them! Give them an inside view to the world of lash education and practice. Show them your high quality tools and materials. If you are fully booked for a month, struggle to take new clients, haven’t changed your pricing in two years - maybe then they would appreciate your slight rise in pricing. Also, when you have a new lash client, take the time to communicate with them the importance of lash hygiene, using the aftercare products properly and also a bit about lash health and safety. Giving clients the full picture in the beginning will smooth out any confusion in a few month and eliminate the question - do I need to purchase and use your aftercare?! Yes!

What is your name and job title? My name is Lauren Smith, I am an Eyelash Artist in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia.

How long have you been lashing? I had my first classic lash workshop in September 2016. Just over a year ago.

Tell me about your lash journey My lash journey has taken me on a different path in life that I never thought was for me. Growing up I didn't have much interest in the beauty industry and come February 1st 2016 I was blessed with my first child. I was working, studying, and also being a mum! I was treating myself to getting eyelash extensions and that’s when I met my now-mentor, teacher, and close friend Sommer Deaves, the Owner of LPL Studio. She mentioned that she was looking for bright, enthusiastic girls to train and work for her new studio. I always loved a challenge; I thought to myself I would be able to fit it in somewhere with my busy life, weekends and late nights. Before I knew it, 4 months after my classic workshop, Sommer felt I was ready for Russian Volume training. It was a lot harder than I expected it to be, but I didn't give up. I practised every single day, I wanted to be great at something, after I won a competition in Beginners Russian Volume, it only pushed me harder to become better. Being a sole contractor as an Eyelash Artist has changed my life dramatically, financially, emotionally and mentally. Knowing you're great at something, to the point that people know who you are when your name comes up in conversations within the community, is an amazing feeling.

What tasks do you do on an average week? Monday and Fridays, I’m a housewife and mother. I do our bills, grocery shopping, cleaning and prepping for the week ahead. My son Oliver and I get to spend time together, playing out the back with our dogs or at the park. We visit friends and family. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday are my working days. I spend long hours at the studio and had been travelling to another town, 2 hours from Wagga, called Griffith every Thursday to do lashes. This has been for almost a year now. Unfortunately, family commitments on a Thursday are now more important and I will have to stop working in Griffith in February.


Sundays are my family and rest days! My mother has a roast dinner almost every Sunday night and in the hotter months it's a perfect opportunity to go swimming down at the river with friends.

What inspires you when lashing? Seeing the people I look up to in this profession succeed, knowing that I can master what they have with determination and commitment. Seeing how people can become amazing at something when they start from the bottom, this profession has made me grow and change into a better person and that inspires me to keep moving forward every day.

Who inspires you? Sommer, my mentor. Her advice, constructive feedback and encouragement has driven me to be where I am now. Seeing how much she wants me to succeed and knowing someone cares about your success is overwhelming. Seeing all the other Lash artists out there that are well known with in the lash community inspire me to keep pushing forward. If they can do it, so can I.

Have you had to overcome anything with lashing? Being in an uncomfortable and confrontational situation with unsatisfied clients when first beginning lashing was very disheartening, thinking you're failing makes you want to quit, but by practising you can overcome your own fear of failure.

Are your family supportive of the work that you do? When I first came to them with the idea of completing my lash course, my parents disapproved of the idea which was difficult to deal with when your heart is set on it. They were worried it was going to be a “fad" and it would be a waste of money for the course. My fiancé has always told me to do what makes me happy, no matter what it is. He didn't understand the industry, but he now knows it has definitely paid off.

What advice can you give our readers? No matter what people tell you, if your heart is set on completing a lash course, or if you're already in the industry, its about what makes you happy. I am so glad I made the decision to step out of my comfort zone to do something for myself, and as it turns out, I’m quite good at it. If you feel like you're failing, don’t worry, everyone at some point in their career feels this way. It's about pushing through your self-doubt and believing in yourself. It's such an amazing feeling when you surprise yourself. Keep practising; there’s only one way to go, which is up. Step outside your comfort zone, exploring something new is an amazing part of life that shouldn't go unnoticed. Give yourself credit, you're doing the best you can.

Have you won any awards or entered any competitions? I entered the Locks Lash competition earlier on in 2017, in the beginners Russian Volume category for Australia and New Zealand. I took first place which was overwhelming. I started to cry and shake from being so excited. I also entered a creative themed international competition in which I didn’t receive a place, but the fun and experience I gained in this new field was brilliant!

Anything else you think may be interesting or you think the world should know about you? I am just a simple country girl of Wagga Wagga, NSW. But my dreams are to conquer the world one set of eyes at a time. I am someone who dreams big and I don't stop until I'm at the top. I am a very loyal person, and if you help me succeed, you can be sure I'll help you succeed. I'm very exciting to attend the Australia Lash Bash conference and meet some of the people I look up to.

With more and more men booking spa and beauty treatments, it’s wise to offer lash extensions to the male market. I recommend listing lash extensions under ‘Male Services’ on the treatment menu to let them know this service is an option for them too, eliminating any embarrassment or hesitation in asking for them. Some men desire a darker and/or thicker lash line; however, most still want to maintain a masculine appearance. To achieve this, eliminate longer extensions and focus on applying shorter lengths. It’s even okay to match their natural lash length. Select lengths from 6mm to 10mm while using natural curvatures such as a B curl. Stay away from dramatic curls such as D as they will lift the lash line and create a feminine appearance.

Here at Lash Inc we love seeing what you magnificent people are getting up to out there in the lash world. Even better than seeing you’re amazing work is the opportunity we have to share it with all our other readers! So, hopefully you’re already thinking, “How can I get my photos to grace these pages?” and we are eager to let you know. More photos means more inspiration, which means everyone starts creating more exciting and interesting lash work. And motivating the lash world is what we are all about around here.

The First Step The very beginning of this little journey doesn’t actually invovle doing any lash work (not yet, we will get to it in just a moment!) The first step is to look. Look at the photos we feature, look at the photos that appear on websites for lash suppliers, lash educators, and the lash superstars you admire. Really look hard at what they are showing off. Great images, that demonstrate great lash work. Every photo making them look like rockstars. Learn what gets you excited, and never settle for less than that level of quality in your own work and your own photos.

What’s next? Plan, prepare, and then get lashing! Create amazing lashes for every client, take loads of really good photos (there’s some advice on that subject in this issue, and more to come in the future too!)

Be Selective Not every set of lashes is going to be a creative masterpiece, some clients just want simple looking, but even the most standard set of extensions can be a work of art. When it comes to sharing your images (on social media, websites, and submitting to Lash Inc) select only the very best images, of the very best lashes.

The Right Stuff We do have certain minimum requirements for your work to be considered. It must be an image that shows good lash work, for a start. Photos should be clear, of good quality, and reflect a high standard overall. For our reader gallery images must measure 2000px by 2000px or larger. Any smaller and we unfortunately cannot use them. For featured artist pages we need an image that is 3500px tall by 2800px wide at the least. Bigger is usually better. The things that most often lead to rejection are the image file being too small or not being a good enough quality. Photos taken from social media sites (even if they are your onw) are not suitable as they will be too small, and will have been compressed which lowers the image quality.

Lash Festival

Winners

In 2012 – with the idea to bring together lash technicians, showing their skills and creativity – Lash Festival was born. The first two competitions were small scale so, in 2014, it was time to ramp it up and encourage lash techs from all countries and walks of life to be involved. 2014’s contest exceeded all expectations with the interest it generated for eyelash extensions. People who had never considered getting their lashes done were able to see the fantastic work that’s being done in lash rooms around the world. Over a thousand entries were received for Lash Festival 2014 and with 60 countries taking part, it was by far the biggest competition of its kind in the world. For the first time, we included a

Volume category along with Individual Lashes and Students. The interest in this category was unbelievable and it shows just how far xD Russian Volume had come in a short space of time. Fast forward to 2017 and the competition proved to be even bigger and blew us away with the styles that were able to be created. Not only did the technicians who entered showcase their skills, they inspired others to take up lashing and to one day become a Lash Festival winner! For this year we included Lash Lift, Individual, Volume and Fantasy categories, to bring it back to basics and allow technicians to show off their skills no matter what their experience. Year on year Lash Festival has grown and the standard of work keeps on impressing our judges. We think that connecting the world’s lash artists and sharing their work will help to raise standards and spur us all on to be the best that we can be.

The items that sell best are those that complement the treatment you are offering, i.e. if you are doing nails, offer a hand cream or cuticle oil. If you are offering lash enhancements offer your clients an aftercare pack. My name is Inese Stepanova. Originally from Latvia. I am 31. I have lived in England for nearly 10 years. It’s been a colourful journey from working pretty basic jobs to becoming a mum and a business woman at the same time. These 2 things have so far been the best things to happen to me from this journey, in 4 years I have found myself as a person and a character. Today I will share with you all the dreams that I have never stopped dreaming. They are just changing and becoming bigger and more vivid! 3 years ago I was excited to share my story with you. And today I am even more excited to be writing for Lash Inc again. In 2014 I launched my first eyelash extensions studio, specialising in this beautiful treatment. Since then, learning from top lash stylists and meeting so many inspirational eyelash stylists I got the bug. I’ve become an eyelash “addict” and I knew how much I wanted to share this passion with the world. Being a single parent and running a business hasn’t been the easiest of the tasks as I knew progression and results were so important for me to bring the best to the salon. For all clients to leave my salon feeling more confident, feeling comfortable and happy with their lashes. Lashes change people’s lives! Yes, they do! In my experience ladies share their experiences, especially my clients now for many years. They wear less make up. Not just eye makeup. But make up in general. Their skin looks better. They feel more confident waking up in the morning even in a rush, knowing their eyes will look great with only a brush. And so many other things… like husbands falling in love with wife’s lashes. I know, it’s funny! But it’s a fact! Looked after ladies are happier ladies. I am very grateful for investing all the time I

had and even time I didn’t have, to learning more, even though I thought I was great at lashing already. Here are my pictures from the start of classic lashes. Then Volume lashes in 2014 and now! This might be my embarrassing spotlight, however I hope someone reading this will feel more confident in sharing their work too, if not in magazines, then social media. Social media power can change our careers. Use it for our advantage. Public progression is a wonderful thing. All eyelash stylists in the beginning were beginners! One thing I have never forgotten to do, between ups and downs, was – dream! Achieving, business growing, never ending passion and determination. This is why I am excited to write for you all about DREAMS.

How often do we dream? I could go on and on, however dreams are different for each one of us. Today I would like to remind everyone – dreaming is allowed and it is beautiful. Dream big and as the time goes on even bigger. Learn from life experiences with a positive attitude and energy. Challenge yourself to achieve. We are used to just saying, I have a dream and 1 day I will achieve it. One day is a very long time away; when will this one day be? Dream dreams and do things to achieve them. Bring your mind to a place where it’s clear and focused. Write things down as they come into your head.

You Are Unique! If your mind is too busy with every day “clutter”, find a way to release the pressure. Try mediation, exercise, running, dancing, singing, travelling, reading etc. All these things will help You to find yourself as you take a achieve your dreams in the lash world! Five steps to

Instagram Mastery

Social media is an endlessly growing industry, and one which can help you grow your business! Effortlessly connect with potential customers and clients, and get to know what they want from their lash artist and suppliers! Instagram can be a minefield if you’re just getting started, with almost weekly adaptations and a huge number of ways to get your content seen, so I’ve put together my top 5 tips for a great Instagram account!

Tip 1: Great Content The content you post on social media is going to be the difference between whether someone follows you or not – posting photos of trees, sunsets and flowers is pretty, and will make your grid look nice but it offers very little else in terms of making people want to follow you. What constitutes great content is going to be a little bit different for everyone. Are you a lash artist hoping to appeal to new clients? Are you a trainer looking for students? A supply shop looking for professional lash artists to try your products?

So what is the great content which makes other people want to follow you?

In a simple way, great content is a number of posts, which your target audience finds interesting.

If you are posting photo after photo, close up of one eye with lashes, this isn’t really going to be interesting to all potential clients – this is good to do sometimes because it shows off your technical skills and everyone loves to know The first thing to focus on is to understand WHO that their lash artist is highly skilled and will your audience is. As soon as you understand keep their lashes safe, but the truth of the matter who your audience is, you need to think what is that clients want to look beautiful. They want they might be interested in. For a lash artist, to roll out of bed ten minutes before they need to your biggest target audience is more than likely leave the house and look like they spent an hour getting ready - show them pictures that will fill them with confidence that you can deliver this! With this in mind, ask yourself what you would most like to see when deciding if and where to get your beauty treatment done? Certainly, the most informative will be photos of Before and After. Before and after shots show your potential clients how beautiful they’ll be when they leave your salon, how amazing they are going to feel! Perhaps they’ll even meet the man of their dreams on the way home and their life will change forever.

Stories are a fun way to show your clients, customers and followers who you are in a more casual way – it is easy to be so professional on your social media accounts that you lose sight of the fact that people love to support and buy from people they like because they trust them – a story takes you from a business to a nice, cool person with a business. Instagram is always evolving and so are you! It’s important to try out new things until you find the thing that works, and even then, experiment with content and layout until you find what works for you - and use that poll feature in Instagram stories to see what kind of content your followers want from you! Tip 2: Interaction Posting something cool is just the tip of the iceberg, and interaction goes both ways. When you then have people commenting and asking questions on that post, it is important to answer their questions, respond to their comments, or even just ‘like’ the comment, this shows them that their feedback or queries are of value to you on a deeper level than just being another statistic. It’s important that you don’t get lost in this ask and respond cycle however, so set aside a little time each day/every couple of days/once a week - whatever works for you - to respond to messages and comments the way you would respond to emails. The great thing about social media is that you can log in from a mobile device and respond on the go, just remember to give yourself some relaxation time too!

Tip 3: Tags and Hashtags So, you’ve posted something really great, well now it needs to be seen. On each Instagram post you can tag up to 20 other accounts. This almost guarantees you 20 likes on your post so goes a

Tip 4: Hashtags! You know you can add 30 hashtags to a post or comment but making them relevant is key to getting them seen by who you want to see them. If you are a lash artist looking for clients and you use hashtags such as ‘eyes’, ‘girl’ or ‘world’, you might get some likes but not from the people you need. Make them specific to you – ‘eyelashextensions’, ‘lashlove’ ‘eyelashextensionslondon’ etc. – tailor them to your location and your work and the likes will follow! This is even more important now that Instagram has introduced a feature where you can follow hashtags – think how much further your post could go if people are following the ‘russianvolumelashes’ hashtag you put on your pictures. Of course, manually adding 30 hashtags to each post is time consuming – make this easier and save time by creating a list in your phone of all the hashtags you use on your posts.

Tip 5: Insta Story Not only is the story function fun, every time you add something new to your story you go to the front of the story line on top of everyone’s feed. Stories are similar to Snapchat but better, you can link to products in your online store, your YouTube videos, you online booking form if you have a business account. You can run polls and get you client’s opinions quickly and easily in a fun way – questions such as ‘do you want me to offer Russian Volume lashes?’ could help you decide how beneficial it could be for you to get booked onto a new course simply by seeing how many of your existing client base would love the service. Mink Lashes

As I started to do this research, it sickened me to see such graphic images of how these creatures are being treated in fur farms, I’m going to spare you these gruesome images but explain a little, how the real mink lashes are sourced. Real fur lashes such as mink fur, have been around for many years and astonishingly they are still being used in the eyelash industry today but these farmers and distributors are using clever marketing slogans to disguise the truth! Do you know what type of lashes you’re using or wearing?

What are real mink Lashes? They are real fur taken from the mink animals, these beautiful looking creatures are being farmed for their fur. They are often killed inhumanly in gas chambers where the gases fill up their lungs and they bleed internally before dying, or sometimes their fur is ripped from their bodies whilst still alive. Mostly kept in tiny wire cages where they cannot move from the sheer volume of animals thrown in together and piled on top of each other, often losing limbs that get trapped under each other, they spend their entire life in brutal and barbaric conditions. Around 60 mink animals are killed to produce just one fur coat, there are no statistics on how many lashes are created from 1 mink animal. Don’t be fooled by the label. Sometimes these lashes are sold as “cruelty Free” or “taken after gently brushing the animals” this is all nonsense to

cover the barbaric torture of these animals and to make the idea of using fur acceptable and saleable to unsuspecting consumers, but there is no such thing as Cruelty Free when using real fur. The farmers do not gently brush the Mink to pick up the fur for lashes, this really does not happen in reality.

So why are we still using real mink Lashes? There is no excuse that can justify using real mink. Man-made faux Mink has come such a long way and manufacturers of lashes are producing some beautiful and super soft lashes that mimic real mink without harming any animals.

How can you spot a real mink lash tray? Real mink trays will not be uniform in their curl; the tray will have inconsistent lengths and diameters through the lash strip. Another indicator is the price of the lash tray, these will be significantly more expensive. Faux mink also known as vegan lashes have a consistent and perfect curl running through the whole tray, as this has been manufactured using curling rods as templates. Curls can vary between manufacturers.

“I guess you can say I was born to do this.” Emily has always been fascinated with makeup and beauty, even as a child. “I remember coloring in the nails, eye shadow, and lipstick in my Archie Comic books; I still have some of them.” She chuckles as she reminisces.

Back then, there weren’t as many options for training and products as there are available today, so Emily chose two of the best-known lash companies at the time, and trained with them both. Then she took to the Internet to learn more. She came across a chat forum called Wake Up In Your Makeup (WUIYMU) where lash professionals from all over the world came to share their tips and techniques. “It was an amazing community of techs who were so generous with their knowledge. No one had any ulterior motives. We just wanted to freely share! I met many of my current lash friends there. Some days I really miss that place!” It was in the WUIYMU community that Emily first heard of the Russian Volume technique. “Some of the women from Russia and Ukraine were posting photos and at first, we all were skeptical because no one here had ever seen anything like it. We didn’t even have diameters that thin available to us yet!” Emily took her first Russian Volume (RuVol) class in May of 2013 and was hooked! One year later, North America had another historical eyelash event – the first live competition, LASH WARS, in which Emily was the Competition Director. Her prior experience in nail competitions helped her to define the rules and procedures for Lash Wars. “It can be challenging sometimes [organizing a competition] because people expect you to be warm and fuzzy, and they get mad when you give them demerits for being late, or they think something is unfair, but you’re just doing your job. You have to have really thick skin.” Since the very first Lash Wars, Emily has also had the honor of judging competitions overseas in England, Russia, and Ukraine, as well as continuing to direct Lash Wars every year. “I love to see how Lash Wars has evolved with my own standards. For example, I have very high infection control standards, and so it reflects in the rules that competitors must follow these standards or receive demerits. These are things I hope one day will become the industry norm, such as wearing gloves and masks.”

I guess people trust my opinion on it because I’m one of the very few who has absolutely no desire to teach or carry my own product line. It makes me unbiased, and therefore, more credible because I don’t gain anything from recommending a certain product or trainer. I just want to help people, whatever that looks like, whether it’s helping a client feel more confident in her own skin or helping a beauty pro choose the right class to take.” When asked what she sees for herself in the future, Emily responded with “I don’t really know. All my life at my very core, I’ve only ever wanted to achieve one thing – change people’s lives. I don’t measure success by how many dollars I can make, but by how many lives I can touch. I want our industry to always move forward and set better, higher standards, and I believe that change can only come from within each of us. When we strive to better ourselves that is when we can better our industry as a whole. I will follow that path to wherever it leads me.”

Petr Lhotský is one of the most recognised male faces in the Lash Industry. Petr has thrown himself into improving the industry through his conferences, educational classes, product line and international judging. Lash Inc. ­— Petr, I love seeing your Facebook posts on your travels as a judge and a speaker at conferences. What is your favourite aspect about your work in the lash industry? Petr Lhotský — I love travelling and I'm glad my work allows this. Thanks to my knowledge and experience in the lash industry, I am constantly in demand around the world. I like everything I know, I can pass on to other people, and I love to motivate them for better performance. It enriches me enormously to explore different angles and views of lash extensions in different corners of the world and cultures. I always try to understand the market in detail.

It has been a very busy year for you please share with us what you have been doing and what your plans are work wise for 2018? Last year, I was able to travel to Asia, specifically to Taiwan and Vietnam, where I had several lectures, trained the stylists and judged competitions. I must admit that my first impression of eyelash extensions in these countries has not been positive at all, it was for me, a kind of culture shock and it took me a while to understand the specifics of the local market. Providing services work on a totally different principle than in Europe or America. For me personally, quality is always the first, but in Asia it's speed regardless of the quality of the result. Therefore, to be a judge, I had to look at the results with their eyes and mind.

Last year was really difficult for me. Intensive demand for training, workshops, attendance at conferences, and lash competitions far outweighs my availability. That's why I carefully choose which events to attend. In addition, I hold the largest international lash extensions congress, which is a very time-consuming activity (and I organize everything myself with the help of one event manager). This year I was able to visit many countries and cities. I went back to some of them several times. E.g. London, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Ukraine, Ibiza, Rome, Vietnam, Taiwan, Portugal, Lithuania, Germany; moreover, my congress was sold out and achieved great success - it was awarded the title of the best conference of 2017. And this year? I hate to say so, but unfortunately, I have had to reject most of the job offers. I carefully choose only the most interesting ones mainly to places I have not visited yet. So, for example, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Japan and many other countries are waiting for me in 2018.

What is next for you in your career? What are your goals and aspirations? I'm not the type that would create some extreme goals, nor do I have any special aspirations. I have always done everything with joy, honesty and openness to people, and my career has been created and grows by itself. I let it flow, I am not a careerist and I never urged myself anywhere, my work, which is followed by my success and popularity, speaks for itself.

them and to achieve higher self-confidence and motivate them to further develop). I wish there was more cooperation in our field at the expense of mere competition and copying. But to mention at least one aspiration, it is absolutely above all, being the best father of my son.

What motivates you to continue your work? The biggest motivation for me is positive feedback, which stimulates me and "recharges my batteries". For that feeling, I am always willing to give my maximum.

We adore your Front cover King image, please tell us the inspiration behind it? The first inspiration was probably an article in an Italian lash magazine, where they called me "il Re delle Ciglia" - King of Lashes. I posted the post to FB and the nickname started to be spontaneously used. So, it was not my idea. After you asked me to add my profile photo to the front page, I decided to make it more exciting and complex - to promote eyelash extensions in combination with my nickname. So, I approached the excellent stylist Inna Kharlamova and I flew to her and her team to Kiev. We achieved a great result in just a day.

Please tell us a little about the conference you are running this year? This year we will have a 2-day congress again. The first day will be full of lectures and entertainment, the next day we are preparing workshops. It may seem that we have nothing to offer for the fourth time, but as we are a global leader in conferences, we are always able to bring unique content and exclusive news from the lash industry. We select only the best tutors carefully. Thanks to this success, we have a huge base of loyal fans who fully trust us and buy tickets in advance without the knowledge of the program and all the details. This is about 50% of the participant. Hi there! I’m Andi, and I am (among other things) the designer for Lash Inc. I’ve been involved in the creative industries for just over 17 years since I started my own business, and I currently run a visual communications agency that produces Video, Photography, and Design (like laying out Lash Inc every quarter) for a variety of different industries in Scotland. For just over a year now, I have been involved with the production team at Lash Inc HQ, and I’ll be honest; I didn’t even know that the lash artist world existed before I met Louise! I knew that beauty treatments existed, of course, but I didn’t have any concept of just how talented and passionate you magnificent lash artists could be. As I have prepared each issue for publication I have been fascinated by all the things there are to know, all the different techniques, products, styles, and applications for lashing skills. Each issue I will bring a little bit of my knowledge and experience, of both running a business and working in the creative industry, to these pages. Each quarter I’ll be penning an article for the business section of Lash Inc International. I truly hope it will be useful to you, and I would love to hear your thoughts. I’d also love to know what questions you might have, let me know what you want to know!

So, obviously, a photographer is always going to say that photos are important. But I am not one to simply make a claim and expect everyone to believe me. I believe I can make my case here. First, think about how you interact with other businesses. Whether you are buying for yourself, your family, or for your business. Do you just go with the first search result, or the first shop you see? Most of us, especially for considered purchases, take a little time to research and evaluate any company we are thinking of using. Lash Artists are not exempt from this scrutiny, in fact they are more likely to be critically examined by potential clients. We are talking about a fairly delicate procedure involving adhesive close to their eyes, they will probably spend more time agonising over their decision than they do when considering a new hairdresser.

Quality that matches your work So, you’ve worked hard, you’ve done great lashes, you reach for that iPhone to snap a shot and pop it on Instagram for the world to see, but WAIT! Great lashes aren’t enough. I’m really sorry, but even the best lashes can be ruined by a few minor, easily-fixed mistakes. Here are a few pitfalls to avoid: GG Messy surroundings – You look and see the flawless lashes that you just made, everyone else is a bit distracted by all the little lash trimmings, the scraggly eyebrows, the scribbles on the patches, even the shininess of the skin or the redness where the tape has been taken off. Tidy up after yourself, make the photo reflect the relaxed,
