Welcome to Issue 28...

Lots for Tots Nottingham @LfTNottingham @LotsforTotsNotts

Hello! It’s been a strange time at Lots for Tots Nottingham, and I’m just delighted that I’ve been able to get an Autumn edition to you despite the many challenges we’re all facing. My hope is that by doing so, you and your young children will be able to get out there a little bit more, have some fun, and support some of the local businesses who are there for you across Nottingham! This edition is smaller, reflecting that fewer activities and events have been able to confirm their timetables. Booking is essential, so I’d always advise you to get in touch with providers to get the latest information!

Jo x Jo Colburn, Editor

But first, a little intro to The Elms Pre-School As we all know, the first five years of a child’s life are vital for their development. At Pre-School, children learn and play together, building strong foundations for the school journey ahead and a successful future beyond it. Your child can join a thriving community at The Elms from six weeks old where support from qualified staff enable children to excel in the seven areas of learning and development on the early years curriculum.

2020: The year we got on with (all of) it! Person-centred Therapist Geradline on resilience We can’t let the events of the last few months go unmentioned.

Whether you struggled or smashed it, every parent deserves a massive well done for simply getting through much of this year without their usual childcare, support network, and regular activities. Although cast off in the same unfamiliar waters, we were all in very different boats. Some of you will have become new parents in challenging circumstances. You and your babies will have missed out on those activities many of us with older children relied on to get through those early weeks of parenthood. Others will have taken multitasking to a whole new level; home schooling while caring for little ones and working from home. What we have all discovered is the importance of resilience: “The

capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.” Or put simply, “Getting up the morning, following a bad day and getting on with it for our children.”

We speak to Geraldine from Freedom Counselling for Mums who gives us a few tips on how we can build our mental resilience. Be aware of your ‘inner critic’ (that voice telling you you’re not doing a good job). Work on challenging this voice with kindness 6

and compassion. If you struggle, imagine you’re talking to someone you love, then turn that compassion towards yourself. Work on a positive mindset by focusing on what you HAVE achieved at the end of each day rather than what you haven’t. Write it down if that helps. If you feel you’ve had a bad day, forgive yourself. Each day is a new start Suport networks are vital as a new parent. Accepting help and support from those who care about you strengthens resilience. Help is out there: Most of us will have struggled at times, but for some parents, lockdown will have created or unearthed issues they need help and support to resolve. • If you’re a very new parent, get in touch with your Health Visitor • Contact your GP if you are suffering with any mental health condition • Mind.org.uk has lots of help advice and access to local networks • Access private services like Geraldine from Freedom Counselling for Mums who supports mums with their emotional well-being and maternal mental health through person-centred talking therapy.

These pages would normally be filled to bursting with details of classes and playgroups in each area of Nottingham. But at the time of going to print there was still a lot of uncertainty, and most playgroups had yet to re-start. So, instead, please find details of those classes that are on, and there for you and your little ones this Autumn.

Some may still be online, some may be in new venues, and you will need to follow the COVID safety measures they have in place. Please check details with the provider before setting off. Booking will usually be required.

Puddle Ducks Swimming Nottinghamshire County Council is trying to get some face to face support groups for new parents up and running, including BABES breastfeeding support groups. Protect your child against Flu this winter It’s more important then ever to access the Free vaccine this Flu season Do I have to pay? No! The NHS offers a free nasal spray flu vaccine to all eligible children in England aged 2 and 3 years old, school children in Reception to Year 7, and those eligible between ages 2-17 years. Why should I vaccinate against flu? Flu can be an unpleasant illness and sometimes causes serious complications. Vaccinating your child will not only protect them but it will also stop the spread among vulnerable friends and family.

How do I access the Flu vaccination? Contact your child’s GP if your child was two or three years old on 31 August and if you haven’t heard from them by early November. If your child is at primary school you will need to fill in an electronic consent form. Contact your child’s school for more details.

Plan ahead to help your hospice care Act this October to plan for your family’s future Making a will is one of those tasks that just never seems to make it to the top of the to-do list. But this October, local solicitors and Will writers have kindly agreed to waive their fees for the writing or amending of a basic Will. Instead, they ask you to make a donation to Nottinghamshire Hospice. Writing a Will is so important as it makes sure the things you leave behind go to the people and causes you care about. Without a Will there is no guarantee your loved ones will be provided for if something were to happen.

12

That’s why this Make a Will Month, Nottinghamshire Hospice are making it easier for all of us to tackle this task. For more information contact them on 0115 910 1008 (ext 208). The suggested donation for a basic Will is £100 - £120 of for mirrored wills £180 - 250.

All the money you donate will go directly to Nottinghamshire Hospice to provide crucual end of life care for people across Nottinghamshire, and their families.
