Spring has sprung and lots of new groups, classes and events are springing back up too!
The Emperor’s New Clothes - a show that the whole family can enjoy together, will be on at Derby Theatre in the first 2 weeks of April so be quick to get your tickets if you haven’t got them already! The Brewhouse in Burton have also put on a variety of children’s entertainment over the Easter Holidays (see page 7) including a Kids Comedy Club and a Bubble Show! There are LOTS of new businesses advertising in this issue which include; ‘Dancing Digits’ a fun class for ages 3-5 which combines Music, Movement and Maths! The Phonics Fox - a fun early literacy class for ages 2-5. New post-natal fitness classes; F.I.T.T Mama from Jenny’s fabulous F.I.T.T. (Females In This Together) Movement. Another exciting new class is ‘Tummy Tigers’ in Mickleover a class for babies under 6 months from the people behind ‘Sense of Calm’. The Library Rhyme Times are also back Hooray! The Jubilee Bank Holiday Weekend is Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June and there will be many fetes, carnivals and celebrations in all corners of Derby and surrounding villages and towns. I’ve gathered together the ones who’ve published their details so far but there is bound to be more announced so keep checking the June ‘Lots on Local’ page on the website for updates! How To Support Children With Facing Their Fears By Jessica Bowers; Derbyshire parent and author of Fantastic Fin Faces His Fears Some common fears in children include fear of the dark, fear of being alone and fear of jabs (Child Mind Institute). Supporting children with building their courage to face such challenges will develop their emotional resilience and empower them as they grow. Stories are a perfect way of introducing new concepts and addressing difficult subjects with children. My debut children’s picture book called ‘Fantastic Fin Faces his Fears’ inspires younger children to build their courage and face their fears.
• Teach children about the nature of thoughts, not all of our thoughts are true. If they are thinking that they can not do something, then it is worth reality checking it with them. • Lead by example; share your fears and demonstrate your courage. Your kids will be inspired! There are some free activities and resources available from my website, designed to support children with building their courage and developing their emotional literacy around fears.
Here are some strategies to support children with facing their fears: • Normalise... shame is a seed that grows when children think that what they are feeling is wrong. It is vital that we normalise any feelings they have. • Aim to build courage rather than trying to ‘get rid of’ their fears. • Setting smaller targets might be more manageable. • Kids love role play; it is a creative way to build courage and empower children. • Reassure children if they fail; failures are part of success. Welcome to
Interactive role play centres based in South Derbyshire Titchy Town and Hero Town are both indoor play villages designed especially for little ones up to 8 years of age. Children can freely explore the many different play zones in both villages. The villages are designed to allow children’s imagination to run wild whilst they role play in a safe environment. Grown-ups can participate in their child’s play, or just sit back and watch them learn whilst enjoying a mug of freshly brewed tea or coffee and an amazing homemade cake from our little coffee shop.
Where are we? Titchy Town is based on the site of Scallywags Private Day Nursey in Chellaston (Rowallan Way, DE73 5WX). Hero Town is based on the site of Scallywags Private Day Nursery in Melbourne (Castle Lane, DE73 8JB). Please use Scallywags car park at both sites. You will find signage in both car parks on how to access the centres.
How it works? Both role play centres work on a pre-book via our website and pay on arrival basis with sessions lasting 90 minutes. On your first entry you will be issued a loyalty card and for every nine sessions you attend you will receive your 10th entry free of charge! Loyalty cards can be used across both sites. Payment is cash only.
