Welcome to Issue 27...

Hello!

I’m really happy to introduce myself to you as the new Editor of Lots for Tots Nottingham.

I’ve been a parent in this wonderful city for the last five years, and have experienced firsthand the incredible variety of activities we have on our doorstep.

From science, nature and messy play to mini theatre, tennis and dance, how lucky we are to be able to give our children so many different ways to have fun as they grow and develop.

Ok - it’s trial and error. Sometimes they love an activity straight away. More often they cling to us, taking the length of the first session to warm up. But, we all see how much they benefit - whether it’s their first forward roll or a happy laugh as they leave your arms in the pool for the first time.

It gives me so much pride to share these opportunities with you in these pages.

Let’s not forget the joy of Nottingham’s open spaces! (Check out page 4). Enjoy!

Park Improvements Freshen Up Days Out So let’s get out there and enjoy them this Spring Haywood Road Green in Mapperley has been transformed into a play area with rope pyramid, seesaws, slide, roundabout, balance beams, swings, picnic tables, benches and a table tennis area.

In Arnold, Muirfield Road Recreation Ground has new equipment including a viper rope swing, 30m zip line, disability access roundabout and 5m climbing wall.

As parents we see how much our children glow after spending even a short time outside.

Whether that’s in a garden, in the park down the road, or at your favourite of Nottingham’s beautiful spaces - Wollaton Park, Rushcliffe County Park, the Embankment or Gedling Country Park (awarded a ‘much loved’ park status in a national competition).

Little ones get home tired (yay!), muddy (after losing a welly boot or misjudging the depth of a puddle) but also refreshed and full of questions about the nature they experienced along the way.

Spring is a lovely time to visit our parks, so it’s good timing then that our local councils have spent the winter improving many of the local parks we go to all the time!

Improvements continue at Gedling Country Park with new viewing platforms, a car park extension and covered outdoor seating area.

In Carlton, the play area on the corner of Carnarvon Grove and Foxhill Road has been improved.

As part of its Pride in Parks initiative. Broxtowe Borough Council have improved many parks including a brand new play area at King George V Park Bramcote.

Other parks to be improved recently include: Broadgate Park and Leyton Crescent Play Area in Beeston, Brinsley Recreation Ground and Mansfield Road Recreation Ground in Eastwood, Beauvale Park Play Area in Greasley, Millfield Road Play Area in Kimberley, Redbridge Drive and Basil Russell Playing Fields in Nuthall, and Hickings Lane Recreation Ground in Stapleford

Your sleep questions answered Baby and Child Sleep Coach from Little Lullabies Sleep Solutions, Emma, answers your questions Abi in Beeston asks: “My little boy is 3 months old, should I try to get him into a nap routine soon?”

Emma: “By following age-appropriate wake windows you will automatically establish a rhythm for your baby’s day that flows, rather than being set in stone. For a 3 month old the wake window (length of time between waking and next nap) is about 1 hour 30 minutes.”

Paul in Nuthall asks: “My 2 year old still wakes a few times during the night, and I think he should be sleeping through by now.”

Emma: “We all wake during the night for brief spells due to our sleep cycles, however adults and children with good sleep habits have learnt how to resettle themselves. There can be many reasons a 2 year old wakes in the night; over tiredness, time to drop the daytime nap (sigh…) separation anxiety, reaching a developmental milestone such as potty training, environmental factors or reliance on something/someone to fall asleep in the first place.”

Thinking about taking baby swimming?

Spring is a lovely time to start! But there are a few things to consider when choosing your session...

Water temperature: Babies and young toddlers shouldn’t swim in pools cooler than 30 degrees C. In fact, babies under 12 weeks shouldn’t be in a pool under 32 degrees C, even with a wetsuit on. All local Water Babies pools are carefully chosen to be above these levels.

Instructor Training: It’s really important that your instructor has specialist baby swim teaching qualifications. Water Babies teachers take 6 months to train to the UK’s highest standards and their love of their job shines through.

Structure: Some classes will get your child used to the pool with songs and rhymes while others are more structured and progressive lessons.

In Water Babies classes we learn and progress every week, helping your baby develop in many different ways.
