Faced with the tragedy of black deaths in custody, the ravages created by alcohol and disease and « the depressing failure of past policies among • the Aborigines, a considerable number of Australians feel a sense of helplessness and impotent guilt. Many voices have been raised over these

issues this year. Some are angry, some are derisive, others are confused. Few of us can

remain unmoved in the face of this problem in our own country. There has been a

opportunity to contribute now. The journev to the Centre of Australia being _ undertaken by the Senior School in April is a way of bringing students into closer

contact with this aspect of the Australian scene. In Alice Springs and at Uluru, we will meet with Aborigines whose traditional 4 lands take in these two towns. For many of

1 our students it will be their first encounter

Pilgrimage as a springboard for further contact and action. This has been made

possible through contact with the Catholic community at Alice Springs, and more

bicentennial Pilgrimage. It is a time when we, as students, staff and volunteers, will

journey into the heart of Australia, while

our families at home hope and pray for us. This experience will provide a tremendous opportunity for a high level of staff and student interaction, and hopefully, the chance for us to grow closer as a school community. As students, we ask that our families will be

with us as we embark on the challenge of the coming year. Throughout the year, let us pray that our Father in Heaven will bring thoughts of love and peace into the hearts of each one of us, so that by the end of 1988, the sense of family between us will be a

strong one which will extend well into our futures.

Casino? Well, that makes my people really sad. They're still hurting inside from that. I will tell you this: Some of the old people died after the Government put that road down there. That time they broke their agreement with us. The new road they made, cut through a very sacred place. This is true what I'm telling you. The Caterpillar

Dreaming 'Yeperenyet is sacred to us. In the Dreamtime that Yeperenye Caterpillar formed the country around here. He made the shapes of those MacDonnell Ranges. That long stretch of rocks near the Casino is the Yeperenye. And that new road went

Being called ona pilgrimage is something s ;pecial ... Our time together will put ils in touch with people on journeys, and we are all on journeys... many journeys ...We are forever travelling to places outside us and inside u: 9, to time past and present and future ...We are forever exploring out own and other peopli e's deepest feelings and insights.

It sounds to me that - maybe - these ones might be different... They're not coming in aeroplane.

Our being together is an invitation to be nc )t just travellers but PILGRIMS ... Travellers become pilgrims when they make a holy jo urney, a journey transformed by faith. When we look with the eyes of faith, all the ground v ve walk on becomes holy ground; all the people and all the common sights and sounds and happenings become miracles
