Celebration of Sport

2021

Dr Susan Stevens Principal

With a real sense of pride and joy in all that has been achieved by our students this year, we take the opportunity to celebrate Sports. So vital in the formation of girls and young women, participation in sports is central to wellbeing, character development and a positive mindset. We acknowledge and praise individual efforts, teams, training regimes and skills improvements; we celebrate unreservedly the improvements and the successes. Though it is not everything, we aspire to excellence and delight in our many wins. Together then, we celebrate all that has been possible, and all that has been achieved with courage and commitment throughout this 2021 year – another year of challenge in every respect. With a great sense of school spirit, our Celebration of Sport invites us to honour excellence of achievement and fine results, as well as providing a forum to commend the extraordinary levels of participation of our students in sport. Students of all year levels have once again tried hard in their sports. As we laud the individual achievements of our athletes, and celebrate the team successes that have been possible, we recognise participation rates in virtual programs, online activities, team challenges, training schedules and the like. Our athletes showed their commitment to fitness, to growing in skills and strength, and to working cooperatively in a variety of fun and innovative ways. They took advantage of the many wonderful programs and activities on offer; the Sports staff and coaches deserve our thanks for the creative efforts of 2021, promoting engagement and enjoyment for all year levels. In 2021 the place of Sport in our Program offerings has been highly visible; students have achieved record levels of attendance. Together with their teachers, coaches and sport staff, I warmly congratulate all participants and thank sport captains for their leadership. A highlight of the Year was the placement of Loreto Mandeville Hall Toorak as 1st overall in the Triathlon. For many years our participation in the triathlon has been at the highest possible levels, and this commitment once again was rewarded with a first place, a well-deserved result. Loreto Swimmers worked well in the pool as far as competition permitted this year, gaining 1st place in the Preliminary Carnival and 2nd place overall at the Championship Carnival. Champion teams in Term 1 included Junior Tennis, both B and C teams, who played with commitment throughout the season and achieved the winning Pennant. In Term 2, and in the absence of finals, we recognise Zone Winners as Senior A Water Polo, and Senior B and F Netball. The much-anticipated Cross Country meet also saw Loreto Toorak win the Preliminary Carnival. Together with Director of Programs Ms Teagan Collins I offer the following gratitude to Head of Sport Mrs Jenna Ward and to all our committed sports staff and coaches. Thank you to all, and warm congratulations. Enjoy this record of Sports 2021, and celebrate with us. Go Loreto!

Jenna Ward Head of Sport

2021 has been another challenging year for students but their continued resilience and commitment to sport at both entry and elite level has been admirable. Loreto Toorak continues to be leaders in the Girls’ Sport Victoria Association where competition takes place against the 24 schools and our teams remain amongst the top three in all Carnival Sports. We also are delighted to offer a place on a sports team for anyone who wishes to play. This encourages student participation and means there is opportunity for everyone to learn new skills and try a friendly competitive environment in a wide range of sports. Sport provides pathways for students to meet new people and form friendships across the years. It was pleasing that the Cross Country Camp at Mt Buller was able to go ahead, and a reimagined Athletics Day Camp was held on the Mornington Peninsula. We look forward to the inaugural Swimming and Triathlon Camp to be held at the beginning of next year. The Celebration of Sport is an important recognition where both excellence with the Sister Jennifer Collins, Premier Teams and in this year’s case, Zone Winners, Year Level Champions and Individual Achievement awards, and participation through the All Rounder Awards. This is at the essence of our sports ethos whereby the Sports Blazer is also awarded for both excellence and participation at senior years. I thank the Individual Sport Captains who led their teams with commitment, enthusiasm and at times flexibility during their seasons when at training, matches or via remote activities. School Sports Captain Madeleine Hume has displayed great leadership of the student body, generous in her encouragement of all, and in communication with other Captains of Sport as the year progressed. We congratulate Madeleine on her impressive participation and success across her years, and thank her for her leadership. With eighteen GSV sports on offer, and Loreto Toorak as usual entering the most teams across the whole Girls’ Sport Association, I am grateful for the staff who have contributed significantly to the Programs, their dedication and expertise is much appreciated. In particular, my thanks extend to the Heads of Triathlon, Cross Country & Athletics, Kath O’Connell and Kate Richardson, Helen Jaensch who has coordinated sports each term and Charlie Dixon for his work as Sport Administrator. Our specialised sport coaches, many of whom are past pupils, have worked closely with the students to provide valuable training sessions and enjoyable matches. I acknowledge the work of the Head of Rathfarnham Sport, Whitney Beseler for her fine work in providing opportunities to Rathfarnham students and their success at the sports held. I thank Principal, Dr Susan Stevens and Director of Programs, Ms Teagan Collins for their unwavering support in the flourishing sports program. Congratulations to all award recipients and thank you for joining us in celebration.

Madeleine Hume Captain of Sport

Sport has always been a huge part of my life from a young age. Starting at Loreto Mandeville Hall Toorak in Year 5, I was presented with many new opportunities that allowed me to enhance my capabilities and broaden my skills through our amazing Sports Program. I’ve enjoyed all the moments I have been able to spend with classmates and teammates to participate, compete and be active through sport. Through our Sports Program, I, and others, have been able to establish long-lasting friendships with my teammates from varied age groups and create positive relationships with the staff and coaches, ones that I will cherish long past my school years. The enriched sporting culture at Loreto Toorak is a highlight for me through my time at school. I am so grateful for each and every coach, who I have learned from and engaged with, who have encouraged me to achieve optimal performance, and helped me to participate in competition levels that without our Sports Program, I would not have achieved. The commitment and determination provided by coaches is vital to the sports environment at this school and would not succeed without the enormous amount of work that goes into providing memorable experiences— whether at House events, weekly training or carnival GSV sports. Specifically, I am grateful for Heads of Athletics and Cross Country, Kate Richardson and Kath O’Connell, who have provided guidance and coaching during my eight years at Loreto Toorak. They have given me opportunity to improve and challenge myself, while simultaneously enjoying every moment spent training and competing. Also, to Head of Sport, Jenna Ward, who is an integral part of all opportunities provided to me and all students through the Sports Program. I have had the honour and privilege to lead the School in their sport endeavours during 2021. Unfortunately, over the past two years my peers and I have missed a significant portion of sporting experiences. However, it has been rewarding to see students and coaches make the most of these unprecedented circumstances. At school and home, all students were encouraged to be involved in a wide variety of sports, creating great memories, and sharing accolades with friends and peers. Loreto girls continue to demonstrate their ability to be courageous, try new things and reach their goals. It has been gratifying to watch the Loreto Toorak community stay fit, healthy, and engaged through online sporting events, such as Up and Active programs, online House events and regular Strava posts, and, as Captain of Sport, it is rewarding to see the continuation of our wellknown sporting excellence. As we all know 2020 and 2021 have been challenging times yet despite this, I am so privileged and proud to have had these experiences throughout my time at Loreto Toorak.

Whitney Beseler Head of Rathfarnham Sport

Loreto Toorak continues to be a competitive member of the Armadale District, and in 2021 the students in Rathfarnham yet again displayed excellence on and off the field in a range of sporting opportunities. Early this year in the pool, our team of 30 students competed in a hotly contested Armadale District Swimming carnival and were runners up of this event. I thank our team of coaches who worked closely with the students to prepare the girls and acknowledge swimming captains Vera Zeng and Saffron Licuria for their leadership. We congratulate the swimmers who competed at the Beachside Division Swimming and acknowledge and celebrate Sarah Jacka and Quinn Guzzardi for medalling at the SSV State Swimming Championships. We congratulate our team of 40 students who represented us in the Armadale District Cross Country. Loreto Toorak were crowned Champions of this event for the seventh year running. I thank Kate Richardson and Kathleen O’Connell for their help in preparing the team for this event and our captains, Lucie Thompson and Isobel Bowden for their leadership of the team. We had seven students’ progress to the next level of competition which is an incredible achievement.

Throughout the year, Loreto Toorak can enter a team in a range of Armadale District sport competition and in 2021, I am very proud to announce that we were winners of the Netball, Australian Rules Football and Soccer competitions. This is the first time we have won all events on the calendar, and I congratulate these teams and their coaches for this wonderful accomplishment. We also celebrate Amber Taveira who advanced through to the Regional Tennis competition, an incredible individual achievement. I thank and celebrate the numerous students who elected to trials for these teams. We are so lucky to have such enthusiastic and determined students in Rathfarnham who love their sport and who are willing to give it their best in every opportunity. House carnivals are a highlight on the school calendar and this year it was Barry who were powerhouses, claiming the cup in both the Cross Country and Athletics competitions. These school events are always such a joy for staff and students. It is wonderful to see the youngest members of the Loreto Toorak community trying their best and enjoying sport, whilst celebrating house and school spirit. With the Picnic Sports and House Swimming still on the calendar for 2021, we hope to host these events later in the term and finish the year with more House Spirit and enjoyment.

GSV Sport

Term 4, 2020 Whilst Covid-19 restricted competition, Term 4 saw a successful Basketball training season. Students were able to hone their skills in shooting, bouncing and game play. It was also an exciting term for Cricket, with an outstanding number of girls participating. There were some impressive displays of batting, bowling, fielding and running with many students learning cricket for the first time. It was fantastic to see so many girls in the pool for Junior Water Polo, learning new skills in the team aquatic environment, the improvements in techniques were evident over much game practice. Summer Athletics was an enjoyable introduction to Athletics for many providing opportunities for students to learn skills both on the track and field.

Term 1, 2021 Term 1 was extremely enjoyable with all sports participating in a full season. Triathlon proved to be one of the most popular Term 1 GSV sports, with over 100 students attending at least three training sessions each week. Overall, Loreto Toorak were again Premiers of the GSV Carnival and had a successful competition at the 2XU Classic. Swimming is always a highlight in the calendar, and it was wonderful to see strong participation. The swimmers won the Preliminary Carnival qualifying for the Division 1 Championship Carnival. There, Loreto Toorak achieved our best result with an outstanding second place, with a number of girls qualifying for the Finals Evening where the fastest swimmers competed against the top 8 from all GSV Schools. Diving continues to be a technical sport. The team worked tirelessly to perfect their forward, backward, inward and somersault diving skills which lead to qualifying to compete in the Division One Championship Carnival. The Softball season was a great success, with over 150 students registering, making up 2 Senior, 1 Intermediate and 5 Junior teams. As a result of all the hard work at training, there were some fantastic catches, exciting home runs and tactical plays displayed by all teams throughout the season. Over 140 students from Years 7-12 took part in Tennis. With training in the early morning at Orrong Romanis tennis courts, everyone improved their technique and fitness in preparation for singles and doubles matches. A special congratulation goes to the Junior B and C Tennis teams, who were both awarded Premier Teams after winning their Grand Final.

GSV Sport continued

Term 2, 2021 Every year, the Loreto Toorak Cross Country team grows to even greater participation levels and better results. This year, our Cross Country Camp was an exciting start to the season with a dedicated group of 30 girls departed to spend part of their holiday training at Mount Buller. Our team consistently trained in the lead up to the competitions with many sessions at the beautiful Tan Track. In the Preliminary Carnival, our team won the Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions as well as being awarded the Overall Champions. Unfortunately, the Championship Cross Country Carnival was cancelled due to restrictions. Throughout the Season, Loreto Toorak competed in a number of Team Relays events where a large number of medals were won at each competition. The AFL season saw many Loreto girls excited to participate in this growing sport. We had 7 teams across all years striving to improve their kicking, handballing, marking and overall fitness, it is pleasing to the see impact that AFLW is having on the sport. One of the largest sports in the school, with over 30 teams entered across the years, Netball was met with a lot of excitement. Many teams were at the top of the ladder after games played, however with the season cut short due to restrictions on the Senior Teams who played what was deemed as a viable season and finished on top were awarded zone winners. The Hockey season was enjoyable and all girls showed commitment to their team, turning up in the dark and cold for training. As the season continued, their commitment showed in games as well with many tough games against other GSV contenders.

Term 3, 2021 The Term 3 Sport Program was unfortunately very short due to restrictions with only 2-3 weeks of each sport taking place on campus. It was fabulous to see the resilience shown by all students for the remainder of the term as they energetically participated in twice weekly live Zoom fitness sessions and sport specific ‘at home’ trainings. Athletics continues to demonstrate a strong team with over 150 students participating in training sessions. A PB meet showed that again the team, should they have been able to compete would have been extremely competitive both on the track and field. The re-imaged Athletics Day Camp replaced the weekend Camp in beautiful weather for a track session on the Mornington Peninsula followed by Team Building activities on the Mentone Beach foreshore. We look forward to defending our six-time Premiership title in 2022. The Badminton season, albeit short, demonstrated improvement in all participants. Played in doubles, Loreto Toorak had entered 5 teams across the age groups. We had 6 teams entered to play in the Soccer season. All the students thoroughly enjoyed embracing the cold mornings on the field participating in some creative training sessions. Volleyball was one of the most popular sports this year with over 250 students registered. There were 19 teams across the age group and every girl demonstrated enthusiasm at the training sessions. The caliber of digging, spiking, setting and serving certainly improved with practice.
