Cabrinilegacyl"ives on throughSullivan'sbiography by Doug Eppler staff writer

Call it fate. How many times have we chalked up new twists in our lives to the hands of that mystical entity known as fortune, luck, even destiny? No one is exempt from its effect, not even the saints. The latest biography of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini is, itself, a product of fate. Written by Sr. Mary Louise Sullivan, former president of the college, "Mother Cabrini:Italianbnmigrantof theCentury" chroniclesthe lifeof the founder of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and reveals new informationthought to be long lost . The biography, however, was theresuit of a loss itself. "It was a combination of circumstances," said Sullivan when asked how her literary adventure began. During her tenure as president of Cabrini College, Sullivan pursued a doctorate at Bryn Mawr College. Slowed, however, by her duties as president, she found only

minute slices of time to devote to her studies. After several years of intermittent work, Sullivan discovered that another graduate student had pursued the exact topic of Sullivan's dissertation and had completed work just ahead of Sullivan. gan work on her second dissertation aimed to emphasize the plight of Mother Cabrini and her work with the Italian immigrants of her time. Her work began in earnest in 1983 and produced a dissertation in 1984. In 1987 she began work on a complete book of the life of the saint. She worked intermi(\ently on the biography and finished her creation in the early part of this year. Though Sullivan estimates that she devoted a total of two years of fullti me work to the project, her work began over IOyearsago. Butitall started with a stroke of Fate. From that stroke came a 300page biography divided into two books. Book 1 focuses on young Maria Francesca Cabrini and her family. Fate intervened here as to Agostino and Stella. From her birth she was destined to be a woman devoted to the care of others, beginning, in fact with her see more LEGACY
