Increasing staff number raises questions by Rita S. Cellucci news editor
The number of administrators and staff working in the college has increased by 33 percent within the past five years. However, the number of full-time faculty has increased only 12 percent. "We need more full-time faculty," Dr. Mary Ann Biller, vice president foracademic affairs, said. From 1985 to 1990, enrollment has steadily increased by 31 percent. Biller said that fulltime faculty "bears the burden of advising" along with handling a larger class load and their work on various committees. According to Dr. Sharon Schwarze, chairperson of the philosophy department, Cabrini is "top heavy" with staff and administration. "We need to bite the bullet and in tough times we can not support it," Schwarze said. According to Linda Fox, manager of human resources, her office was developed in May 1989. The college felt the need to develop an office to organize the handling of employees, Fox said. Fox also mentioned Institutional Advancement and Admissions as two growing offices. Martha Dale, director of alumni affairs, said, "There is an obvious need for more help" in Institutional Advancement. For fundraising, the need to cultivate alumni and
sponsors demands more staff time, according to Dale. "It's a serious job in these times and is very complicated," Dale said. Dale, who was part of the sub-committee of Master Planning, said that a development director was hired in the early 1980s to handle grants from outside corporations. Another development was the Comprehensive Campaign to solicit major gifts and contributions. "It's a separate effort from the annual fund · which is day to day," Dale said. However, the Comprehensive Campaign has not brought in the money the college had hoped for, according to Dale. "It was a bad year financially because of the recession," Dale said. "We are all in this together," Dale said, "and it is for the survival and the growth of the College." "It is visible on campus that there is a proliferation of administrators," Schwarze said. According to Schwarze, faculty used to handle most of the things that staff now does. "I'm delighted that staff is here but it has gotten out of hand," Schwarze said. The Chronicle of Higher Education had an article that reported on several colleges and universiti~s in the nation that have a high number of staff. According to the article, many colleges have had to cut positions.
