TheBraeBurn Experience

It’s my pleasure to be crafting this message to you as a wrap up to 2021. December is traditionally a time of reflection in the Davidson household, reviewing the past year of family life, work life, and Club life I am very pleased to say that on all levels, I’m filled with gratitude.

I have always viewed the “glass half full”, and in my Club life review, it’s much more than half! Eleven months ago we played our last round of golf before launching into an exciting, transformative golf course construction project. Three past Boards, over 70 volunteers, countless meetings, strategy sessions, and deliberations have led us to the reopening of the course

Not everything is perfect, nor will it be perfect for some time. What is impressive, however, is that, in spite of 69 rain days during peak grassing season, we are still opening with a high-quality golf experience in just 11 months Yes, we could have used a lot fewer rain days Yes, we wish we had all 18 holes in the same condition as those that were grassed early on in the process. Yes, there are still some areas that will be needing attention over the next 12 months to create the go-forward standard we have set

Yes, we could have used a lot fewer rain days. Yes, we wish we had all 18 holes in the same condition as those that were grassed early on in the process Yes, there are still some areas that will be needing attention over the next 12 months to create the go-forward standard we have set.

Having said that, I could not be more proud of the work accomplished by Tripp Davis, our architect, our General Contractor, Don Mahaffey and the team at GreenScape Methods, Mike Maki and the Heritage Links irrigation team, and the commitment from our volunteer crew of committed Members that played a big role in this process, and our Club staff of committed professionals

I view this construction process as a win: on budget, all new infrastructure with drainage and irrigation systems, a very strategic and interesting course design that will stand the test of time for decades to follow I view each step of this process with gratitude for what we have accomplished, not through the lens of what remains to be accomplished

I wish each of you a healthy, happy and prosperous holiday season and a wonderful 2022.

In service,

A MESSAGE FROM SCOTT DEISS

Membership Update

Dear Fellow Member,

Since my last communication sent as the Membership Committee Chairman, we’ve had some amazing accomplishments The primary goal of every private club in the country is to rise to the quality level where there is a demand created sufficient to have a waitlist of new Members to join the Club. This is true for BraeBurn today, as we have a greater demand for stockholding Membership privileges than our By-laws permit This is the first time in over 30 years we have achieved this prestigious goal.

This goal was not achieved by accident. Through enhanced marketing efforts to current Members, strategic messaging going out to the golf community, and the wonderful story of this golf course construction project, demand has outweighed our supply of available Memberships in the Stock category. I know without the committed, voluntary efforts of our Membership Committee, and the strategic planning of our Club staff, we would not have met our goals. Of greatest importance was you, our current Club Members, who deserve the greatest applause. You are the very best ambassadors In both your work and social circles, you spread the message, you piqued the interest and you brought forward prospective Members with whom you wanted to share the BraeBurn experience. Without your support, and your message to friends and colleagues, BraeBurn would not be the wonderful Club we all share in today

We, as a Club, have faced two challenging years, with the COVID-19 pandemic, and with the task of promoting the BraeBurn experience with no golf offerings available This is a success story in my view BraeBurn is a family, we have different expectations, different reasons why BraeBurn plays such a special role in our respective lives. Every Club offers Member programming, facilities and a place to get away This is where we have differentiated ourselves from the pack We have more to offer due to our outstanding, supportive family of Members. For that, I am both proud and grateful.

We will not rest on our laurels We will continue or drive to be the very best BraeBurn we can be in creating an experience we can all be proud to support as Members of the BraeBurn community.

In service,

BOARD CORNER

A MESSAGE FROM LISA CARRUTH

Membership at BraeBurn

As we get closer to opening the golf course, we have some exciting new communication tools coming soon! This includes the ability to opt-in to SMS messaging regarding specific topic areas. That being said, PLEASE make sure to update or add your email address and mobile number to your Member profile.

Ladies, please make sure we have your email address as well! We only have about half of you receiving emails from the Club, and we want to make sure every Member is included in our Club communications.

Please feel free to email me with your preferred email address and your mobile number, and I will gladly update your member profile for you or scan the QR code below!

I am so grateful for the support of Members this year, in getting us to a full complement of Stockholding Members THANK YOU! My goal is to continue to build on this amazing year, and to create even more exciting Member experiences for everyone to enjoy. Thank you! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Improve Club Communications

In order to improve our Club communication for the entire family, please provide us with all adult family Member emails Please review your email address in the Club website (scan the code) to ensure we have the proper information

If we have an incorrect email address listed for you on the website, or you would like to add additional family Members to the communication, please email Tracy Gray, at tgray@braeburncc.com with your corrections or additions

Parking Sticker Reminder

Dear Member, in order to provide better access control and security, every Member vehicle must have a Club issued parking sticker. This aids in delays at the front entrance and allows the gate guard to more easily recognize Members and their vehicles If you do not have a current parking sticker contact Tracy Gray at tgray@braeburncc com and she will facilitate securing your sticker

WINTERJUNIORGOLF ATBRAEBURN

Coaches Jeremy and Paul are excited to announce two more junior golf camps happening this winter!

If you are interested in signing your junior golfer up for this program, please email coaches Jeremy and Paul at psimpson@braeburncc.com & jortega@braeburncc.com.

TINYTIGERSGOLF PROGRAM

We are excited to announce the newest addition to our junior golf program, the tiny tigers! This will be a series of four 1-hour sessions starting Saturday November 20th running through Saturday December 18th (skipping Thanksgiving week, Sat. 27th)

Tiny Tigers will run each Saturday from 1-2pm. This program will focus primarily on very basic golf skills, developing simple athletic movements and coordination.

Each session is structured for complete beginner golfers ages 4-7 As with all our camps, we will focus on the FUNdamentals, introducing golf with lots of fun, games, and competitions. Golf clubs are not required for this program

Cost is $350 per child for the entire program, and $400 for a guest (guests will only be allowed if the camps are not full)

With safety being a primary concern, Coaches Paul and Jeremy will be instructing the sessions, which limits our class size to no more than 10 junior golfers per instructor (20 total).

ADVANCEDJUNIOR CLINICS

With the great success we have seen over the past 6 weeks with our advanced junior clinics, we will be adding three more classes These will be on Saturday December 4th, 11th & 18th from 12-1 pm.

The cost for each clinic will be $40 Please sign up for the dates you wish to attend by emailing psimpson@braeburncc.com & jortega@braeburncc.com. We will limit this class size to 10 junior golfers per clinic

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Our selection this month is THE NATURE OF FRAGILE THINGS by Susan Meissner.

April 18,1906: A massive earthquake rocks San Francisco just before daybreak, igniting a devouring inferno. Lives are lost, lives are shattered, but some rise from the ashes forever changed Sophie Whalen is a young Irish immigrant so desperate to get out of a New York tenement that she answers a mail-order bride ad and agrees to marry a widower she knows nothing about. At first, his odd behavior leaves her with the uneasy feeling that something about her newfound situation isn't right Then, she discovers hidden ties to two other women The fates of these three women intertwine on the eve of the devastating earthquake, thrusting them onto a perilous journey that will test their resiliency and resolve and their belief that love can overcome fear

Our Presenter is Susan Killelea

Join us in person and stay for lunch if you'd like. Please RSVP to Stacy Robinson by December 15th

Happy reading,

The reopening of our beloved golf course is upon us We couldn’t be happier. Despite being unable to play at home, several of our WGA members have taken part in Texas Golf Association tournaments played all over Texas in 2021 Some players merit a special mention For the second year in a row, our BraeBurn champion, Meghan Moake and her partner Caitlyn Stanley won the Women’s Texas Pinehurst Championship played at Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course in Fredericksburg on November 1-2, 2021, with an impressive total gross score of 134 At that same event, our members Lyn Jones and Robin Bobbitt took first place in the 5th flight

Also on November 2nd, BraeBurn competed in the last West Houston Interclub of the year and took first place that day against our opponents: River Oaks CC, Houston CC, Royal Oaks CC, Lakeside CC and Shadow Hawk GC. Thanks to all the girls who played one or several days during the 2021 season. We cannot wait to host again the West Houston Interclub on our new course in 2022

By the time you read this article, the nomination, election and publication of the new WGA officers for 2022 will have taken place. A million thanks to the other officers who served with me on the WGA Board, for their help and support for the last two years: VP Robin Bobbitt, Treasurer Rachel Hanse and Secretary Kerry Incavo

Happy Holidays to everyone,

Stacy Robinson, Book Club Chair robinsonsta@comcast net

Mourning Dove

I was surprised when I first saw this seed-eating dove on hole number 7 because almost all doves at BraeBurn are the very common White-winged Dove However, this was a Mourning Dove, the most widespread US dove and one which ranges from Panama to Canada and even to Hawaii (introduced in 1963) This individual was in a tree but the one I saw another one a couple of weeks earlier that was on the ground, where they spend most of their time feeding.

Why are they called Mourning Doves? It’s because of their soft and mournful cooing sounds that we all have heard. Their wings also create a whistling sound upon takeoff. It’s interesting that they are not more common at BraeBurn given their widespread occurrence, but perhaps this is because they seem to prefer open, agricultural fields. But now that I have seen a couple of Mourning Doves, I look more carefully at all doves

It is written that the Mourning Dove is the most popular hunting game bird in North America It is estimated that 25 million are taken every year, 7 million of which are taken in Texas, but not at BraeBurn, where they are free to eat seeds and watch the humans golf.

Jim Frank joined BraeBurn in early 2016. He is a member of the Greens Committee.
