LPS Mayfair Parent Hand Book 2024-25

Welcome from the Head

I am delighted to welcome you and your family to our School community. Starting at a new school, at any entry point, always elicits a mixture of emotions in parents and children. It can be a time of excitement and anticipation coupled with nervousness and uncertainty, however I am certain that within weeks, your whole family will feel settled. We are here to support you every step of the way.

At London Park School Mayfair & London Park School Sixth – and including Hybrid at LPS, we take our responsibility for your child’s development incredibly seriously. I am idealistic about the power of education to change the lives of young people and I recruit staff who want to make a meaningful and positive impact on the students they teach.

Our engaging and diverse curriculum is designed to enrich intellectual curiosity and prepare students for academic success through the development of creativity, critical thinking, and initiative. We know that simply preparing children for academic success alone is insufficient. We must place the same importance on everyone’s social and emotional well-being as we do their academic outcomes. London Park Schools offers outstanding pastoral care and we ensure that all of our students have the inner confidence and resilience to thrive.

Moreover, parental engagement is extremely important to us; we strongly believe that we must work together in partnership to ensure that each of our students fulfils their potential. I look forward to working with you. This Handbook provides a wealth of information and we encourage you to read it carefully before your child joins us for his or her first day. It will provide a useful resource to you throughout the academic year with guidance on all our key procedures, policies and events. Our Parents Association, Friends of London Park Schools, continues to grow and develop and we hope that you will consider attending meetings, coffee mornings and events over the course of the year..

I feel truly privileged to lead such an energetic and dynamic group of students and staff and I look forward to seeing you very soon.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can help in any way at all.

ADMINISTRATION

Attendance and Absence

We take a strong line on student attendance and have high expectations in relation to absence. School buildings are open from 8.15am and students are welcome to arrive from this time. All students are expected to be in School by 8.30am at the latest. The School day ends at 4.10pm for all students. Students are expected to maintain a 95% attendance record throughout the academic year unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Sixth form students (Years 12 and 13) are based at LPS Sixth, 79 Eccleston Square, SW1, a short walk from Victoria Station, and access the building using personal ID swipe cards. This gives them more freedom to go off-site during break and for lunch. Students are equired to wear their ID cards whilst in the building and to sign in and out.

Illness and Medical Appointments

In the case of on-the-day illness, parents should inform Reception by 8.30am by either telphoning 0207 491 7393 or emailing office.mayfair@londonparkschools.com. If emailing, please copy in your child’s Form Tutor (firstinitial.lastname@londonparkschools.com).

If a student has a medical or other appointment which they need to attend during the school day, parents must email this to office.senior@eatonsquareschools.com in advance and the student should make every effort to inform their class teacher of their absence before the lesson. Where possible, appointments should be scheduled in the school holidays, however, the School recognises this is not always possible. Please note that after sickness, students should remain off school for 48 hours.

Absences During Term Time

The School does not permit students to leave school early at either half term or the end of term. Under the terms of the Education Act 1996, it is unlawful for a child of compulsory school age to miss school for any reason other than illness without the specific permission of the Head, or a staff member nominated by the Head. This ‘leave of absence’ will only be granted in exceptional circumstances and any such requests must be made, in writing and in advance, normally by the parent or guardian with whom the child resides. The decision as to what constitutes ‘exceptional’ circumstances rests solely with the Head. Parents who permit unauthorised absence are committing an offence under the Act.

Any planned absence during the school term which is one day or less should be agreed by your child’s Head of Section. Any absence that is two days or longer, or at the start or end of a half term/term, must be approved by the Deputy Head (Pastoral).

Late Arrival / Signing Out

Students who arrive at school after 8.30am must sign in using the iPad sign-in system in Reception, providing a reason for lateness. If a student needs to leave school early, they must sign out using this same system and state a reason. Please note, a parent/guardian must make contact with the School, preferably via email, to inform us that a student needs to leave early or they will not be permitted to do so. If students are unwell, they must inform their class teacher and then report to the Deputy Head, Pastoral or other First Aider, who will decide on a course of action. Students should not contact their parents to collect them under any circumstances.

Picking up / Dropping Off

Please note that both Piccadilly (the A4) and Eccleston Square are incredibly busy, especially at drop off and pick up time. There are no parking facilities outside either building. A member of the Senior Leadership Team is on door duty every morning and afternoon should you wish to ask any questions.

School Reception

The School Reception is staffed from 8.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday. Outside office hours a message can be left on the main school phone number (0207 491 7393) which will be picked up the next working school day. To contact the Sixth Form reception, please ring the main school number above and select Sixth Form from the options menu.

Students should refer to staff by title and last name and staff should do the same when addressing colleagues within earshot of students. Please encourage this rather than the use of titles such as ‘Sir’ or ‘Miss.’

All teachers can be contacted by email, using the email address format: firstinitial. lastname@londonparkschools.com. The full staff directory can be found on My School Portal.

Parents should contact their child’s Form Tutor in the first instance to allow them to maintain an overview of their child’s welfare and progress.

Communication with Parents

All routine communication from the School is via email. Important messages can be passed from parents/ guardians to students by contacting Reception on 0207 491 7393 who will make every effort to pass them on as soon as possible. Please ensure that the School has your latest contact details so that you receive all communications.

School Calendar

The most detailed School Calendar can be found on My School Portal. Key dates and events will also be on the school website. Please ensure that you check this carefully for term dates, Parents Evenings and other important events. An email will be sent to parents each Friday outlining timings of events occurring the following week.

Parent Communications

Parent communications are published each Friday and are sent via email. These contain important information including details of general school notices as well as news of trips, functions and other school events.

Newsletters

We send out hafl-termly newsletters to parents throughout the academic year. These detail events that our students have been participating in and are a wonderful summary of school life.

Guardianship

The School requires every student whose parents are resident abroad to have a suitable guardian living in this country. It is the responsibility of parents to identify a guardian and to notify the School of their identity, including their relationship to the child alongside providing their contact details.

Student Property

Property brought into school by students is done so at their own risk. The School cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage. All personal property should be clearly marked with a student’s name and stored in a locker.

Lost Property

Lost property is handed to Reception. Form Tutors will often encourage students to search through the lost property to reclaim lost items. Any named items will be returned to students through Form Tutors. At the end of each term, any remaining uniform items become part of our second-hand uniform collection.

Students Snacks / Catering

Students are welcome to bring in healthy snacks to consume during morning break. Please note nut and sesame products must not be bought into school. School lunches are an important part of the school day and we provide high quality, nutritious food for our students. Please ensure if your son or daughter has any allergies that you have completed the relevant medical and allergy paperwork for the catering team. This is available from Admissions.

There is no lunch provided for Sixth Form students, but they do have their own kitchen area in the student common room and food can be stored in the fridges provided. Sixth Form students may also go off-site for lunch.

Every half-term there is a student and staff lunch to enable staff and students to meet and mingle.

Uniform

Our uniform supplier is www.Schoolblazer.com. The latest version of the uniform and appearance list can be found on My School Portal. Full uniform must be worn at all times, unless otherwise specified by a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Students are permitted to wear School sports kit on days they have Sport & Games. ACADEMIC

Core Curriculum

Details of the core curriculum for Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) and Key Stage 4 (GCSE’s) can be foundin the Curriculum Policy on My School Portal. There are seven periods per day with Period 1 commencing at 9.00am and Period 6 finishing at 4.00pm. Students must de-register before going home at 4.10pm.

Additional Curriculum

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

Year 12 students are invited to undertake an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This is an independent research task and involves either writing an extended essay of about 5,000 words or creating a product with an accompanying shorter essay of about 1,000 words. It is highly valued by universities and we encourage students to consider doing this.

Careers

Students are provided with a variety of careers education and guidance throughout their time at London Park School Mayfair. In Year 7 and 8 this happens during morning form time and PSHE lessons. Information is tailored to help students prepare for their choice of GCSEs. Year 9, 10 and 11 students continue to build on this by researching future careers and learn how to create a CV and letter of application.

We invite speakers from a wide background into school to give talks and answer questions so that our students have the opportunity to hear about paths through education and work. Our library has a careers section to further support this process. In Year 10, students spend time at the Sixth Form taking part in various entrepreneurial and experiential careers activities.

Sixth Form students focus on Higher Education and other post 18 options whilst developing the practical skills necessary for future job applications including interview preparation. We also draw on the strengths of the Dukes Education family to use some of the very best careers and university preparation companies around. These include InvestIn, the A List, MediPortal, LawyerPortal, Oxbridge Applications and others.

Each summer, Year 12 students are expected to undertake a week’s work experience.

Homework

Homework provides the opportunity for students to consolidate and extend or prepare for the next lesson. There is a set homework timetable for each year group and students should spend up to 30 minutes on a piece of homework for each subject set. The amount of homework increases as students move up the school: Years 10 and 11 can expect an hour per subject per week, although it may be split over separate days.

Sixth Form students’ can expect up to four hours of homework per subject per week. Nonteaching periods for Sixth Form are expected to be used for independent study. There are opportunities for Supervised Private Study, or SPS for those who need it.

More information can be found in the Curriculum Policy. Homework should always be purposeful and meaningful and so there may be times when homework can be shorter or longer than these guidelines. Homework may also support the constructivist classroom approach.

Catch up Work

Students are expected to catch-up on the academic work they have missed as a result of their absences and will be assisted by their teachers in this regard. If an absence is prolonged, Form Tutors may be able to collate appropriate work to be completed at home.

Student Resources

Textbooks and Stationery

London Park School Mayfair issues physical or digital textbooks. Some Key Stage 3 subjects use a variety of resources at different times meaning no single textbook is issued. In this case, the student’s work, in their exercise book, ClassNotebook or resources provided via Teams and SharePoint, will provide all the necessary information for them to revise for assessments throughout the year. All books are required to be returned or renewed in the Summer Term. Charges apply for lost or damaged books and these will be added to the end of term bill.

Equipment & IT

Pencil case

Each student is required to have a fully stocked pencil case with them for each lesson including pens, pencils, ruler and a calculator. Certain items of stationery are available for students to purchase from Reception at allocated times of the day. Students are required to sign for items and these are invoiced, in arrears, at the end of the term in which they are purchased. This is managed by the Receptionist. All students should always have a reading book with them in school. Students are welcome to bring a Kindle or other e-readers into school but these should be locked in lockers for safekeeping when not in use.

Laptops

Each student should bring their school device daily, and it must be fully charged. Students must purchase a prescibed laptop via the school unless given permission to use a different device. This is to ensure that we can install our relevant safeguarding software.

Office 365

All students are provided with an Office 365 account, giving them access to the full Office 365 suite including Teams, Word, Excel, OneNote, and Outlook. This also provides them with a school email address which should be used if contacting staff. Student emails are in the format firstname.surname@londonparkschools.com

Parent Portal - My School Portal

We use My School Portal to provide parents with access to school calendars, student reports, student timetables, online forms, and other essential information.

Monitoring of Student Progress

Form Tutors and subject teachers monitor each student’s progress closely throughout the academic year. If for any reason, a member of staff is concerned about the progress a student is making, the form tutor will be in touch with parents to raise this concern and propose strategies to rectify this. Should a student make significant positive progress, Form Tutors will communicate with parents.\

Parents’ Evenings and Reporting

Every term, parents will receive one formal communication from the school on the progress of the student. This will be either face to face in a Parents Evening or through reports via My School Portal.

It is our policy to hold at least one Parents’ Evening per year group per year. An overview of the year is available on My School Portal. Specific dates are published on the Portal Calendar and further

details will be emailed to parents in the run up to relevant evening. Over the course of the academic year, parents will receive a number of different types of report, dependent on what is most suitable at the time. All reports are accompanied by explanatory notes and the student’s Form Tutor or Head of Section can be contacted with any questions relating to reports. A full report consists of comments from the subject teachers, highlighting strengths and next steps for development with assessment data only where relevant. The Form Tutor will also comment on the student’s overall progress.

A short report consists of effort and achievement grades accompanied with a statement of target and guidance to achieve the target for each subject. At certain times of year, such as following mock examinations, grade cards will be created. We will, of course, monitor progress carefully and be proactive in contacting parents at other times should issues arise. Full report details are found in the Curriculum Policy.

Academic Monitoring

Where a student’s attitude to academic work is deemed unsatisfactory, they may be placed on a monitoring report. Each class teacher comments on the student’s performance in relation to targets that have been set in conjunction with the form tutor. This will be monitored on a day-to- day basis by the Form Tutor and/or the Head of Section. Students may be placed on a monitoring report by the Deputy Head Pastoral or Deputy Head Academic.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to always act with integrity. Cases of suspected plagiarism will be investigated, and sanctions applied accordingly, in line with our Behaviour Policy. Students will be reminded about examination rules and regulations (both external and internal) and must adhere to these at all times.

Learning Enrichment Department: The Loft

The Loft team works alongside teaching staff to encourage students to expand their skills, abilities and talents and support the development of skills needed to ensure each student reaches their full potential both academically, socially, and emotionally.

We recognise that all learners have their own abilities, strengths, and talents alongside their own learning challenges whether those relate to particular abilities or strengths, being new to English or having a Special Education Need or Disability. Our name, ‘The Loft’ eliminates any stigma associated with seeking additional support.

We want our students to be:

• Confident Self Advocates so students know their strengths, challenges, and what they need to in order achieve their goals both academic and pastoral.

• Independent learners with the skills and knowledge to achieve their personal goals.

We try to ensure that our provision is personalised and tailored to a student’s learning profile and at the heart, is student-led. Parents are invited to complete a Learning Enrichment questionnaire during the admissions process. Teachers are made aware of learning needs via an internal Learning Enrichment Register.

Student Passport

Students work with the Loft to produce a personalised passport which communicates information about their learning profile to their teachers. This passport is reviewed with the student through the academic term. Students who require an additional level of specialist support will have personalised LE Plans identifying their targets, intervention and support in place.

English as an Additional Language

Students with English as an additional language will undertake an assessment by the Loft and their English teachers in their first half term. They will be then allocated a proficiency code based on their language skills. These codes are taken from the Bell foundation EAL assessment scheme and the individual student codes will be shared with their teachers.

Exam Access Arrangements

We provide access arrangements in line with the Joint Qualification Council (JCQ). We have students who make use of a variety of arrangements in their internal and external assessments including:

• Rest Breaks

• 25% extra time

• Reading support

• Prompter

• Use of a Laptop

If you have any concerns about your child’s progress. or information on any known needs, please contact their Tutor who will pass this on to the Loft team. Parents should provide us with any specialist assessments, for example, Educational Psychologist, Speech and Language Assessments or formal diagnosis so we can ensure the appropriate support is in place.

PASTORAL

Pastoral care is the heart of an LPS Mayfair education. Our focus is on supporting students to develop inherent resilience to embrace change with confidence and positivity. We understand the demands that are placed on our students and that many lead busy lives with commitments outside as well as inside school. Your child’s Form Tutor is there as the first point of contact and to provide day to day pastoral care. Each student is known and treated as an individual.

The School educates about welfare matters such as the importance of sleep, healthy eating and switching off from social media in addition to addressing issues such as time management and organisation. Parent support on these matters is very much appreciated.

Rewards and Sanctions

Please refer to the Promoting Good Behaviour policy located on My School Portal. The level of sanction should be proportionate to the seriousness of the offence.

PSHE

Students have a timetabled PSHE lesson and the overview of what is covered in these sessions can be found on My School Portal. These sessions are aimed to inspire self-knowledge and promote the health of the entire individual. In addition to this, pastoral themes are covered during Form Periods and Assemblies. This allows for a holistic approach to student wellbeing. The PSHE Policy can be found on My School Portal and questions relating to pastoral care at the school can be directed to the Deputy Head (Pastoral), Mrs Sarah Sword on s.sword@londonparkschools. com.

Bullying

Please refer to the School’s Anti-Bullying policy on My School Portal. Bullying is not tolerated, and we encourage all students to report bullying as soon as they experience it or are aware that other students are experiencing it. This can be done in person to any member of staff at the School.

Child Protection

The safety and welfare of all students at LPS Mayfair is our highest priority. We take seriously our commitment under the Education Act 2002 to safeguard and promote the welfare of children; and to work together with other agencies to ensure adequate arrangements within London Park School Mayfair to identify, assess, and support those children who are suffering, or likely to suffer, harm. Please refer to the School’s Child Protection Policy, located on the School’s website for more information. The School’s Designated Safeguarding Lead is Mrs Sarah Sword , s.sword@londonparkschools.com.

Dangerous Substances

We are committed to protecting the health and welfare of all students at our school whilst supporting and upholding the law of the land. Please take time to read our policy on Alcohol, Drugs and Tobacco in full; this can be found on My School Portal. A summary version can also be found below.

Alcohol

No student should bring alcohol onto the school premises or consume alcohol on the school premises. The likely consequence of such behaviour is suspension.

Drugs

We adopt the view that we should educate our students to make sensible decisions relating to drugs. The School will act promptly and decisively where any student is involved in the buying, selling, position or use of illegal drugs. We request that parents share any worries regarding the use of illegal drugs with the Deputy Head (Pastoral). Any student involved with drugs must expect to be dealt with severely and is likely to face expulsion from the School and may, indeed, face criminal investigation. Any student may be asked to undertake a drugs test, administered by an outside agency.

Tobacco

The smoking of cigarettes (including e-cigarettes and vaping) is inappropriate in a school context. This includes travelling to and from school in school uniform. Any student found in the presence of smokers can expect to be treated in the same way as those found smoking

Health & Medical Provision

If you wish to discuss any medical information in detail, please contact the school. Please note, it is vital that the School is up to date with a student’s latest medical information and it is the responsibility of parents to inform the school of any changes to medication and physical or mental health. Students should not have any medicine on their person during the school day; this must be kept by the Receptionist (Medical Officer) who will supervise the administration of such medication. The School’s First Aid policy, which outlines the School’s medical provision and facilities, can be found on My School Portal. The School Counsellor, Ms Lamont provides on-site counselling and can be contacted on s.lamont@londonparkschools.com.

Mobile Devices and Sexual/Indecent Images

Students are welcome to bring mobile phones to school, however, these must be handed in during morning Registration. If a student is seen using a mobile phone, it will be confiscated and stored behind Reception for the day.

Using digital devices to take images of teachers or any person without their explicit permission is strictly forbidden and will result in a serious sanction. Possession, sharing or distribution of an indecent image of any person under 18 is a criminal offence and the School is under an obligation in most cases to report it to the police. All members of the community should note that the age of criminal responsibility in England and Wales is 10 years, and that it is a crime for anyone from that age to take, possess, make (by downloading), or distribute any image or pseudo image of a child or young person under 18 years considered indecent, or sexual. Although the School and the police, where involved, will consider the UKCCIS guidance on ‘youth produced imagery,’ a criminal record could be gained, with implications for future employment etc.

Relationships and Sex

It will always be an aim that students should foster good, sound and appropriate friendships and relationships. Although it is difficult to be prescriptive in such matters, students must be aware of the following expectation of behaviour: Compromising situations and public displays of affection must be avoided. Any student who oversteps these parameters may be sanctioned. As with all disciplinary issues, particular circumstances will be taken into consideration and advice will be sought from the relevant staff before a final decision is made.

GAMES, SPORT & COCURRICULAR

As a member of the broader London Park Schools group, we share our Games afternoons with the students and staff of LPS Clapham. This not only gives us more depth and resource to be competitive in fixtures, but allows us to offer a more varied and interesting range of sports for all of our students.

We are delighted to have signed an agreement with The Spencer Sports Club in Wandsworth to act as our main sports ground. The facility boasts outstanding grass and astro-turf facilities for multiple sports, and we look forward to many successful afternoons on the sports fields.

Students enjoy one extended Games afternoon per week where year groups are combined as per the below schedule.

• Monday Years 7 & 8 (U13’s)

• Wednesday Years 11, 12, & 13 (U18’s)

• Thursday Years 7, 8, & 9 (U15’s)

Autumn Term

The Autumn Term focuses on our core sports of football and netball, with sessions on offer for both competitive and development groups. Squads will continue to train together throughout the term with various fixtures available for those that wish to participate.

Core PE Overview

Students from Year 7 through Year 9 have one double PE lesson per week. In these lessons students experience a dynamic and varied curriculum, that is designed to promote a culture of physical activity, develop performance, and expose students to new and exciting sporting experiences.

Sports are normally paired with themed components of fitness to develop both a practical and theoretical understanding which you can see in the overview below.

Core PE lessons take place at the Queen Mother Sports Centre, and students will travel with staff on public transport. All students must carry a topped up Zip, Oyster, or contactless payment method for payment.

Students without permission will travel back with a member of staff to the school where they will be dismissed at around 4.20pm.

All applications must be completed via the following Form Games Dismissal Form Fixtures & Selection Policy

Sport is a core part of LPS, and we are always keen to recognise achievement by players in our school teams. It is important that students picked to represent the school in fixtures act as good

role models at all times, attend training, and consistently bring the correct kit. Students who fail to meet these expectations may not be selected for school teams. You can stay updated on all of our sports news, fixtures and results via our sports website: London Park Sports Website

While we will always aim for a return by 4:20pm from away fixtures, please anticipate that later returns as late as 5:30pm might be possible. We will always send updates to keep you informed about later return times.

We kindly ask that where possible you avoid scheduling extra sessions, such as tutoring, on sports afternoons, as all students are expected to represent the school in fixtures when selected.

Sports Kit

If you have sport or PE, you should attend school In your sports kit, otherwise we expect you to be dressed in normal school uniform please. Our school sport supplier is www.schoolblazer.com

Co-Curricular

The wide variety of co-curricular activities help to enrich our students’ learning and provide fun, adventure and inspiration all year round. Students can enjoy a range of cultural, physical, and charitable activities, most of which happen from 4pm to 5pm. Students can choose from various dedicated clubs and societies each afternoon that are led by our teaching staff. In addition, we are excited to introduce a selection of externally run clubs that may incur an additional fee.

The club timetable will evolve each term based on student demand and will be shared with students and parents to ensure they can plan out their co-curricular activities. We not only encourage our students to develop their existing talents and interests but also to try new things and get involved with as much as they can.

The expectation is that students should attend at least one club per week. Enthusiastic participation in these activities enriches the whole educational experience at London Park School Mayfair.

The House System

Upon joining the School, each student is allocated to one of the four Houses, becoming a member ‘for life’ under the guidance of the other students and teachers within their House. encouraging cameraderie, loyalty and commitment. All teaching staff are also allocated to a house and each house is led by a Head of House (staff member), and the House Captains (current Year 11 students).

The structure of the House system means that each student is afforded the opportunity to shine, to discover their own talents and to make a genuine contribution to their school community. House assemblies, events and celebrations allow students to build teamship and kinship vertically and horizontally. Houses provide opportunities for leadership, responsibility, coaching and mentoring.

There are Inter-House competitions in numerous academic, sports and cultural activities including music, poetry, maths, science, general knowledge, drama, art, chess, sports and debating.

Students from LPSMayfair Houses are also allied to their counterparts at sibling LPSClapham and join together for house matches at sports days.

Music (non-curriculum)

Please contact Mr Davide De Santis (D.DeSantis@londonparkschools.com) if your child is interested in joining choir or song-writing club (free of charge).

Peripatetic Music Lessons

If you wish for your child to take additional singing or instrumental lessons, please enquire directly to the tutor. The tutors are as follows:

• Mr Tom Harrison - Clarinet and Saxophone Tutor - tom@saxteacheruk.com

• Mr Richard Corr - (Acoustic and Electric) Guitar Tutor – r.corr@londonparkschools.com

• Mr Daniel Short - (Electric and acoustic) Guitar Tutor - danielshortmusic@gmail.com

• Mr Patrick Levett - Drum Tutor - patlevett@hotmail.com

• Mr Charlie Lewis – PianoFunClub Director – charlie@pianofunclub.co.uk

Individual music lessons are timetabled on a rotation basis to ensure that the same academic lesson is not missed each week. We have a number of designated peripatetic music rooms within our building and a number of very experienced teachers who are professional musicians and many of them perform regularly in the West End.

Parents will communicate directly with the peripatetic teacher regarding lessons once they are set up and will receive a termly invoice directly from the teacher to be paid in advance to the lessons commencing. All students are expected to inform their class teacher if they are going to miss part of a lesson due to a music lesson so that the class teacher can account for the students’ whereabouts and if a student needs to rearrange an instrumental lesson, they must do so 24 hours in advance with their teacher. If a student fails to turn up to their music lesson, this is still charged for.
