Superb steaks in Poulton

With Christmas a distant memory, Local List went in search of the perfect steak.

And we think we may have found it...

This month we visited Poulton in search of the holy grail.

Many readers will be familiar with the Highcross, part of the Harvester group. In 2016, the parent company, Mitchells & Butlers, refurbished it and rebranded the Highcross as one of its steakhouses. There is another Miller & Carter steakhouse, formerly the Queensway, in St Anne’s.

In these strange times we are finding it best to book in advance. Turning up no longer guarantees you a table. Plus this is a very popular restaurant.

Camembert Mashed Potato The menu contains a lot of excellent vegetarian options. In fact we ordered the fabulous Camembert Mash side as a starter (above) and it proved delicious on its own.

Vegetarian starters comprised Halloumi Fries, Garlic Bread with Melted Cheese, Mediterranean Olives, Baked Cheddar Mushrooms, Nachos, & Baked Camembert. There are two vegetarian mains, Roasted Cauliflower Wedge, secondly the Roasted Fennel, Quinoa & Piquillo Pepper Burger.

Plus there are a lot of great vegetarian sides.

For fish lovers there’s Salt & Pepper Calamari, Prawn & Crayfish Cocktail, Pan Seared Scallops, Grilled Lobster Tail - all starters plus Pan Seared Hake and Hand Battered Cod as mains.

There’s a separate gluten free menu with so many options it’s practically the full menu. Plus there is a good range of Prime Burgers.

The drinks menu has a good range of red, rose, white & sparkling wines with the house red & white at £19.95. We were impressed with the low and no alcohol cocktails, lagers & beers.

Peroni, Estrella & Aspall cider are on draught.

Disappointingly only one draught beer is available - the excellent Chieftain IPA - we would have liked more choice.

Above is the superb Black Angus Sirloin. There’s also a 20oz New York Strip served on the bone. The T-Bone is also 20oz comprising a tender fillet and a flavoursome sirloin.

Below is the 8oz Fillet which was extremely tender, probably one of the best steaks we’ve ever tasted.
